301 | Why wasn't Jesus named Immanuel? | Matt 1:19 | JCrichton | 108089
Hi, Schimc! I guess I'm a bit "source" rahter than "language" believer. Rather than attempt to decipher the orginal language vs. translations, I go to the source and the content: Matthew 1:18 Mary is engaged not yet married. Matthew 1:18 Mary is having a baby--the Holy Spirit's. Matthew 1:19 Joseph, a righteous man, plans to leave so that Mary's mysterious pregnancy (since he had not had sex with her) would bring shame on him, instead of death on Mary. Matthew 1:20 Yahweh's angel sets Joseph straight--Holy Spirit is responsible for Mary's pregnancy. Matthew 1:21 Joseph is given the Child's name and His purpose. Matthew 1:22-23 Prophecy is fulfilled! Matthew 1:24-25 Recap: Mary with Child without prior sexual relations (intercourse). My question to you: Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah: Joshua: Immanuel? If you do, do you think that the Holy Spirit would choose any vessel to bring God into the world? Logic: Mary's and Joseph's background (what little is known to us): Mathew 1:19; Luke 1:28, 30, 34, and 38. Do these passages do not suggest Mary's and Joseph's righteous stand with God? Do they not suggest that Mary was a virgin? But, is it that your problem is not really Mary's physiological state, but is it rather that you can not conceive, in your mind, a virgin birth? Guess what?, Mary was having such interrogative and the angel Gabriel revealed this to her: for nothing is impossible to God.' Luke 1:37. God Bless! |

302 | Did "betrothed" couples live together? | Matt 1:19 | JCrichton | 141591
Hi, KraZ4myKing! I think that part of the problem you, and most every other Christian, are having is that you are viewing ancient Hebrews through today's morally bankrupt standards! Not only is there a cultural difference among the Israelites of Jesus' time's, today's Israelites, and the rest of the world, but the devotion and conviction of people such as Joseph and Mary to Yahweh demolishes all of our preconceptions about worship, sex, marriage, family and extended family... not only were the betrothed couple obligated to their parents' authority but they also had to answer to the community at large! Marriages were arrenged withing the tribes and clans but once made official the whole community were part of the celebration... the couple may not have even had much time to "get to know" each other--specially in rural areas... Though Scripture does not reveal much about the actual ceremonies, we know that there was a preocupation with witnessing, if only after the fact, the consummation of the marriage--much could be lost if the husband would accuse the wife of being unfaithful during their betrothal period and the wife could not prove her innocence! Scripture tells us that when Joseph found out about Mary's pregnancy he decided to leave town in (most probably during the darkest night) secrecy. Why? Joseph, as attested by Scripture, was a just man (translation a pious believer) who, after weighing the consequences of denouncing Mary's pregnancy, opted to protect her and the unborn child by sneaking out of town... in this manner the town's people would conclude that Joseph took advantage of Mary during their betrothal period and then abandoned her: he would be known as a wretched and wicked man who deserted his "wife" and child; while, Mary and the child would escape the terrible punishment of death by stoning, at the hands of the town's people, and would be treated with empathy and kindness. Did the people of Israel commit the same acts (culturally and morally) as the rest of the nations around them? It is evident that they did! But within Israel there is God's Remnant, those Israelites who adhere (as the old Hebrew National hot dogs on the commercials) to a Higher Authority! At the incarnation of the Word, we meet several of these pios servants of the Almighty, Mary and Joseph included. Sadly, humanity is so intent in demystifying Scripture and the prophecies included within, that we contort reason, warp understanding, and blind intellect in an effort to twist God's Word, as the Serpent in Paradise, to match our finite wisdom and our corrupt principles! Jesus was very clear on this issue... that is why He warned that we cannot serve two masters! Do not allow your professor's intellectual accomplishments dissuade you from the Truth: The Word is God (John 1:1-14), and for our sake He became man (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18), so that those who Believe in Him would have eternal Life (John 11:25-26)... this Jesus (the Emmanuel: God-among-us), did not have a human origin as the rest of His brethren, He was born of the Virgen Mary by the Power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:26-38); hence, at the age of twelve He was found at the Temple perplexing the Masters of the Law and when questioned about His disappearence He revealed a small bit of information by relating to Mary and Joseph that He was to involve Himself in God's Business! (Luke 2:42-50) Please, guard yourself against the doctrines of the world... the best way to do this is prayer and Bible study! God Bless! Angel |

303 | Where did the three Kings come from | Matt 2:1 | JCrichton | 106564
Hi, james! EdB is correct, there's no number stipulated. I want to add that they were not there at the time of birth. Matthew 2:11 notes that: when they saw the child with the mother, they worshiped him. A second passage tells us about Herod giving orders to kill all the boys in Bethehem and its neighborhood (other towns perhaps) who were two years old or younger. Now, the shepherds (Luke 2:8-20, 21) were able to see Christ during the day of His birth. God Bless! |

304 | Where did the three Kings come from | Matt 2:1 | JCrichton | 106572
Hello, james! A few minutes ago I remember this verse: Matthew 2:11, which states that there were three offerings (gold, frankincense, and myrrh); perhaps that's where the "Three Kings" come from! God Bless! |

Hi, Jenn! It is kind of difficult to find Scripture for a very specific theme... Check these: Matthew 2:10; Luke 1:14, 47; Philippians 4:4 1 Thessalonians 5:16 Luke 2:11--this as a reminder that our Lord came to us as a simple babe... John 16:21--great celebration of mother and child but may be too deep... God Bless! Angel |

307 | Why did Satan disrespect Jesus? | Matt 4:3 | JCrichton | 116601
Hi, Tyre! Part of the problem we have in interpreting the Bible is that we jump the gun... we see things from our perspective and not from God's; hence, we attempt to contain God in our limitations... (Please do not read anything into my words that would not suggest a simple and general statement!) I do undestand your confusion... but rather than define Jesus or limit Him, let's reread the passage: Then Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the desert to be put to the test by the devil... and the tester came and said to him... (Matthew 4:1-3) There was no surprise assault by Satan; Jesus was in a specific place and time, according to God's Will, in order to be tested, as in Job, by the devil! God Bless! Angel |

308 | antichrist does know there is a god | Matt 4:10 | JCrichton | 120299
Hi, lyndie! Yeah, Satan knows his limits! We can see in Matthew 4:1-11 that in God's Plan there is a little window for the devil to show his colors... The Holy Spirit brings Jesus to a cross-roads and allows Satan to engage Him. Satan, true to his design, boasts about his powers and his possessions... but once Jesus commands him to leave ("away with you Satan!") the devil takes off. Pride reduced him to the position of anti-Christ. But he and his minions believe that God exists (James 2:19 and Matthew 8:28-29)... their problem is not denying God's existence... their problem is refusing to live under God's authority! God Bless! Angel |

309 | Verses in bible depicting Jesus as God? | Matt 4:10 | JCrichton | 150805
Hi! I am posting part of a recent reply I gave on this topic: Jesus IS God! John tells us that the Word was with God and that the Word is God... that all that exist was created by Him and that He is the Light of the world, the Life incarnate which came to His own, upon their rejection He gave all who believe in Him the power to become children of God. (John 1;1-14) Yahweh testifies, through His prophets, that Joshua, Christos, the Anointed, is coming to the world and that He is the Emmanuel (God-with-us--which is an ancient prophecy made by God that He will come and walk/live among His people)... among His other titles are: "Mighty God," "Eternal Father," and "Prince of Piece!" Jesus was called Master (Rabbi or Rabbuni) and even those who rejected Him would still recognize that He spoke the truth and that His teaching had full authority... so it is not difficult to understand that His disciples and those who would hear Him were able to understand that there was someone greater than themselves among them... yet even those who did not know Him that intimately undestood that He was God: Elizabeth (and her son), Mary's relative (Luke 1:39-44), the magi (Matthew 2:1-11), Satan (Matthew 4:1-11), Satan's minions (Mark 5:1-13), His disciples (Matthew 16:16; 28:9; 14:33; John 16:25-30; 20:20), the Father (Matthew 3:17; 17:5; Luke 3:22; Hebrews 1:8-12), the Father's Heavenly servants (Revelatin 5:7-14), and finally the Father and the Son (Revelation 21:3-6; 22:12 and 1:7-18)... It was no simple revelation that Christ made when He told His disciples that when they have seen Him they've seen the Father... the Father and the Son are inseparable, how can we expect to serve the One sitting on the Throne and not the One next to Him? The four living creatures, the elders and the angels make no exception because they know that God is God and that there's no subdivision in the Eternal One! (Revelation 21:22 thru 22:5) If you need additional passages, just let me know and I'll gladly assist you! God Bless! Angel |

310 | I need a quick bible study- Matt.5:14-15 | Matt 5:14 | JCrichton | 117385
Hi, crazydaisy! As disciples of Christ, we are not better than the world (God is not a respecter of man) but we are called to lead others to God. There are many who find it easy to evangelize those who are already seeking Jesus, and there are those who think it beneath them to tread among the masses, and yet others who think that they have "it" and don't need to bother with others... Jesus is commanding us to use the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, to build the Church: to preach, to evangelize, to convert, to love, to lead, to teach, and to stand in Christ and for Christ! Since He is the Light and we are His followers, how can we do anything but to place that Light high up in our lives so it can shine onto the world? God Bless! Angel |

311 | A question about the Sabbath Day | Matt 5:17 | JCrichton | 118970
Hi, Alencon! True, Jesus brought changes to the Israelites and the world at large... These changes were not to circumvent the Law but to bring it to perfection: Matthew 5:43-48 'You have heard how it was said, You will love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on the bad as well as the good, and sends down rain to fall on the upright and the wicked alike. For if you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even the tax collectors do as much? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Do not even the gentiles do as much? You must therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.' Does it sounds like Jesus is abolishing or perfecting the Law? We have to understand that the practices that were established in Israel had been straying from the true letter of the Law. The same people that objected to Jesus Christ's healing or forgiving the sins of the needy on the Sabbath day were the same people that allowed the vendors and money exchangers to install themselves about the Temple and to conduct their business during the Sabbath or any other Sacred Holy Day! Jesus' words were a simple correction and a reminder that the Sabbath was meant to be beneficial to man and not man to be a slave to the letter of the Law... These people questioned Jesus' authority; they refused to listen even to Scripture which proclaim Joshua's coming and living among His people! Ultimately, they were not interested in respecting the Law concerning the Sabbath--they broke it themselves whenever it profited them--they simply had no other way to confront Christ Jesus... feigning piety was their only recourse! Their insincerity was so evident that at one time Jesus publicly rebuked them: 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisses, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people's faces, neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go in who want to. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hell as you are. Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyone who swears by the gold of the Temple is bound. Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? ...Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it. And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwells in it... Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cummin and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law--justice, mercy, good faith! These you should have practised, those not neglected. You blind guides, straining out gnats and swallowing camels!... (Matthew 23:13-32--Due to space constrains some of the passages were skipped or left out; please read the complete listing!) Jesus did not abolish the Sabbath (day of rest); He pronounced liberty to do the will of our Father, specially on the Sabbath! God Bless! Angel |

312 | Old Testament/New Testament | Matt 5:17 | JCrichton | 121613
Hi, ripken8os! Both the Old Testament and the New Testament are the Word of God. They do not go out of fashion for they are not trivial matters. Each of them have teachings and commandments. Each lead us to Christ! The Old Testament is Yahweh's dealing with His chosen people, Israel--teaching them through the prophets about God's Kingdom. The New Testament is the fulfillment of much of the prophecies of the Old Testament, in Jesus' incarnation, His teachings, His establishment of the Church, His suffering, His death, His Resurretion, and His Ascension into Heaven. And it is the inclusion of all who believe in Christ into the Kingdom of God! Each one of the Testaments are valuable to our Christian identity. Each one teaches us about God's Love, His Mercy and His Judgment. Please take the time to read the Bible--all of the Bible! God Bless! Angel |

313 | Anger-Psalm 4:4 | Matt 5:22 | JCrichton | 120941
Hi, formereverything! Yeah... you've missed everything! The Psalmist is not condoning anger; he is placing a cap on our emotions. Anger is an emotion that, if let to run rampant, could destroy those around us, including our loved ones, and even ourselves! So yes, be angry (specially when you meet those who defile God) but be careful not to sin. And when you lay in bed search your thoughts and remove all negative feelings: all angry thought that would cloud your mind and build up an evil foundation in your heart: My dear friend, never folow a bad example, but keep following the good one; whoever does what is right is from God, but no one who does what is wrong has ever seen God. (3 John 1:11) God Bless! Angel |

314 | How do I meditate? Cross Ref Ps 4:4 | Matt 5:22 | JCrichton | 120954
Hi, formereverything! I have an excellent Psalm for you: Happy the man who never follows the advise of the wicked, or loiters on the way that sinners take, or sits about with scoffers, but finds his pleasure in the law of Yahweh, and murmurs his law day and night. He is like a tree that is planted by water streams, hielding its fruit in season, its leaves never fading; success attends all he does. It is nothing like this with the wicked, nothing like this! No, these are like chuff blown away by the wind. The wicked will not stand firm when Judgment comes, nor sinners when the virtuous assemble. For Yahweh takes care of the way the virtuous go, but the way of the wicked is doomed. Psalm 1 This Psalm has all the basic "meat and potatoes!" It begins by describing those in fellowship with God and those who are rebelious to God. Happy is the man who serves God. That cannot be said of the wicked who are forever scheming, robbing, destroying, murdering... The believer is like a tree planted in fertile grounds near a water base who has the Lord, God Almighty, as his caretaker. Not so for the wicked whose behavior and paths are loathsome to God. The believers have a double life: a physical, here and now, existence and a spiritual, with the Lord, existence--this hidden Life is found in Jesus... the wicked, by their behavior, have rejected God and, consequently, the hiden Life in Christ! When you read the Scriptures you will find that the above theme is reapeted all through the Bible. Meditating is made easy because we have so much material to work with... Just take the suffering servant of Isaiah 52:13 through 53:12 or Jesus promise of the Holy Spirit in John 14 through 16 or God coming to us in a body made of flesh and blood as our own: John 1:1-18 or Faith in God as in Hebrews 11. God Bless! Angel |

315 | can you be forgiven for aldultry if you | Matt 5:24 | JCrichton | 120233
Hi, pgantt! There are many teachings about everything we experience... Jesus is quite specific: if there is an unsolved grievance that would keep us from coming near to God, we must resolve it (Matthew 5:23-24) We cannot harm our brothers and sisters in the faith and seek God's forgiveness while circumventing the brother or sister that we have harm (or will continue to harm). Jesus' taught us one prayer (as an example of how we are to pray) and that prayer contains a built-in clause that causes us to have a direct relationship with humanity: "forgive us as we forgive others"--paraphrased. James brings it from the worship point of view: if we praise the Lord our God, how can we also curse (harm) those created in God's image?: James 3:10 through 4:10. Keeping in mind that we hurt others and ourselves in more than one way. It is possible to kill physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Every word and every deed (act or omission) bring repercussions: there is but one body of Christ! Do not just tell God you are sorry about something; be sorry! Repent, turn around, back to God, and live your life in Jesus! (Matthew 5:27-30) God Bless! Angel |

316 | is masterbation wrong | Matt 5:28 | JCrichton | 118182
Hi, partyboy971! Some times we find it difficult to search the Bible because we desire to find a very specific language and a very exact statement on every single thought that we may have... Perhaps it is our humanity (the flesh) that compels us to look for escape clauses that we might be tempted to use as a built-in excuse... but God will not be swayed nor deceived by our arguments: Don't delude yourself: God is not to be fooled; whatever someone sows, that is what he will reap. If his sowing is in the field of self-indulgeance, then his harvest from it will be corruption; if his sowing is in the Spirit, then his harvest from the Spirit will be eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8) So, though we may convince ourselves otherwise, only the Word of God will be the basis for our judgment: You have heard how it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye should be your downfall, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body thrown into hell. And if your right hand should be your downfall, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body go to hell. (Matthew 5:27-30) Still, many would object that the above Scripture does not mention the word masturbation... I have a composite word for them: tunnel-vision! Jesus was very specific: if we act in our thoughts we sin--the seed of sin does not have to come to physical fruition in order to damage us! He was also exact in that what causes us to sin should be cast away from us--no don't read into this that Jesus commanded that there should be a fellowship of self-mutilated servants... He is demanding that we put away or remove from our bodies that which causes us to sin! He is adamant about how we are to use our members (body parts): not in the service of sin but in the service of Christ! God Bless! Angel |

317 | When does wrongly divorced rule apply? | Matt 5:32 | JCrichton | 129302
Hi, tortoise! You have presented two divergent points: In Matthew 5:32, Jesus is speaking to the people of Israel and declares that the children of Abraham are not to behave as the gentiles who have not bond with Yahweh. They are to be firm in their covenant with God... not seeking to divorce their wives (back them mostly the males had wealth and power) when the next best thing came along or when the easy young thing could be had for a house, some jewelry, and an allowance! Jesus' Word is exact: He commands against divorce then and now; yet Christendom has succeeded in retaining Moses' divorce decree rather than obeying their Savior's Command! Now, 1 Corinthians 7:15 though seemingly contradicting Jesus' Word, since it is a different issue, it does not! Jesus warned that there will be a time when people will be chosen by God while others will be left behind... He went to the extent of the bedroom's intimacy (be it spouses or siblings or parent/children): I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. (Luke 17:34) This is precisely Paul's argument... during the Apostles' time Christianity was in its infancy, people were exposed to Christ's Gospel for the very first time in their lives; some were readily open to God and the Holy Spirit enlightened them and they sought Jesus, were baptized and became new creatures in Christ; other's rejected this strange doctrine of a man-God who died for them, who offered his flesh and blood for them to eat, who promised to resurrect them if only they obeyed and worshipped Him! Some of these people were living in a common-law marriage, some may have even been married in their civil/religious customs... Paul did not preach that those who converted to Christ separate themselves from their spouses who refused to believe in Christ; rather, he offered that the new convert stayed in their union with the nonbeliever... but only as long as the nonbeliever did not hinder their Christian life! Paul knew that a Christian wife/husband could assist in the conversion of the other spouse or at least bring the offspring of their union to Christ! Yet, if the believer's love and tolerance was not enough for the nonbeliever, Pual saw this as God's sign that the union was not accredited by Him, thusly the union/marriage was null and void, allowing the believer to dissolve this unequal yoke! Sadly, too many "Christians" twist Scripture to mean that if physically or mentally abused one is bound to her/his spouse... conversely, the other rule suggests that it is OK to divorce one spouse if we discover that that person was not our "soul-mate" or some other mumbo jumbo rhetoric! Paul tells us that we are to remain faithful in the service of the Lord and that we are to abide by the Lord's Command--he seeks not to set limits on us, but to allow us full and continuous growth in the Holy Spirit... this is why he calls us to imitate him as he imitates Christ. As he is enlightened by the Holy Spirit, Paul is able to negotiate the problems faced by the believers in light of Jesus' Doctrine! Recap: Christians -- no, no divorce, unless Christ's Command is broken! The world -- hey, they do as they please--even at the cost of eternal damnation! God Bless! Angel |

It is also a fact because only God's Will is ultimately achieved... even out of the worst escenarios God's Plan emerges in perfect triumphant design! 320 | Lords prayer | Matt 6:9 | JCrichton | 138163
Hi, Stacy Renee! Not all offering information on Christ are Christians--some are outright anti-Christians! Emmaus post offered you the Biblical passage where you can find the Lord's Prayer... I wanted to add the information found at www.bartleby.com: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001. Lord’s Prayer or Our Father, the principal Christian prayer that Jesus in the New Testament (Mat. 6.9–13; Luke 11.2–4) taught his followers, beginning, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” It summarizes Jesus’ teaching and stresses the concern of honoring God before that of meeting one’s own needs. It also reveals Jesus’ sense of a filial relationship with God. After the Second Vatican Council, Roman Catholics added a version of the doxology (“For thine is the kingdom,” etc.) to prayer when used in the Mass; the doxolgy was already current in Protestant liturgies and is present in some manuscripts of Matthew. In Latin the prayer is called Paternoster. It also occurs in the Didache. The first three phrases of the prayer parallel the opening words of the ancient Jewish Kaddish God Bless! Angel |
