21 | which bible to use | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 119741
Hi, mikec! I own several versions... The one I prefer is The Jerusalem Bible--excellent text, built in concurrence, extensive footnotes, original words/phrases... Though the language is modern it is very true to the original text (both in tone and syntax). God Bless! Angel |

23 | How dangerous is the Tongue? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 120006
Hi, happiness0070! Jesus said that what actually hurt us is what comes from the storage of the heart (hate, envy, pride, anger...); James (3:1-12) breaks it down to: we claim to love God, yet with the same tongue that we praise Him we curse our brethren (humanity) made in the image of God! I personally see this problem with the tongue: once you say it... you can never take it back! Most relationships suffer because of a misplaced trust (confiding in gossip mongers) or because of betrayal by a loved one (either a lie or the ill-use of confedential information). The old adage (sticks and stones...a word could never hurt me!) is a faulty one; from my personal experience, I have witnessed people being hurt by things that were said in their childhood; couples, including Christians, in the heat of their battles regurgitate specific words which they know will either force the other person to retaliate or will totally obliterate them. The problem with words is that once spoken they travel deep into our heart and minds... James admonishes us to be slow to speak, to be slower even to anger! The tongue kills just as effectively as a gun or knife: Adam and Eve died by the words of the ancient serpent! God Bless! Angel |

24 | ref. to today's Christmas tree-rebuking | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 120071
Hi, daylight! Could you be more specific? What is it that you want to know?--I have read the Bible in its entirety but I have not come accross any reference to "Christmas tree!" There are several mentions of various trees (the olive tree signifying Israel; the giant tree being cut down and a grafting being made of a foreing tree onto its trunk--Jews vs. Gentiles; the tree of life--Christ; the tree of knowledge--the Holy Spirit; the tree at the river-bed--servants of God; the tree that don't bear fruit--Jesus wills it to die... If you can be more direct I will attempt to help you further. God Bless! Angel |

25 | How to read the Bible | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 120180
Hi, cherrylmartel! One particular method which I employ is reading three chapters of the Old Testament (beginning with Genesis, of course), one Psalm (again beginning with #1), and one chapter of the New Testament (beginning with Matthew 1). As you progress in this manner, there are moments when two or three readings will merge, sheding light on a prophecy, a commandment or a historical factor. Purchase or borrow a concordance dictionary to assist you in in-depth study; this will not only allow you to cross-reference a particular passage, but it will also familiarize you with the various books of the Bible. I recommend a version that has modern language in order to facilitate assimilation and retention of the passages. God Bless! Angel |

I suggest that, if you do not receive any reply, you re-register with your new screen name and make a notation that you are cherryl with a new screen name. God Bless! Angel |

27 | Holy Bible makes reference to America | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 120613
Hi, Edd! There are two general statements that I have heard: 1) Based on an Old Testament passage that talks about the kingdom from the North standing with the people of God (Could be mostly based on the political event of the 1960s when America took the Jewish people under her wing... Israel is in the midst of its blood enemies being held by an invisible umbilical cord attached to the North). 2) Revelation's famous prostitute who has the kings of the world under her control (...I think this is loosely based on America's influence on the world's economic, cultural, and political infrastructures). God Bless! Angel |

28 | How should I study? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 120715
Hi, ucmenew! A few hours ago I attempted to post a reply to your post--erroneously I posted it to a different member... Here's a copy: From your post I understand that one of your concerns is that when you study the Bible you come to an understanding of a passage and once you communicate this understanding to others they tell you that you are wrong... That is an excellent way to study the Bible! Realize that the Bible is God's Word: Divine Teachings. Begin each study session with a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to guide you to the Truth; to clear your heart and mind of human bias; read as little or as much as you are able to assimilite--never read as a task or for the sake of claiming to have completely read the Bible. Use a concordance dictionary and study the cross-references (this you could do either as you read or as a secondary study as you re-read the original passage); this will not only supply you with additional view points but you will familiarize yourself better with the various books of the Bible. Once you have done your personal Bible study, discuss your findings with others (always carry your Bible into such encounters); do not do this hurriedly! If the person/s do not have the time and patience to go over their explanations with the Bible, either request a future meet or look for other individuals that have the time and patience to use the Bible as basis for their support or rejection of your findings. As other members suggested research all possible resources that you may have available. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you each step of the way. Remember, discovering God is joyful labor not a task to be performed and put out of sight; as James says: "be doer of the Word!" God Bless! Angel |

29 | Thanks, and here's another question. | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 121470
Hi, ripken8os! There are indeed people who believe that if they feign believing in God it is just as valid as a true believer. Hebrews 11 is an excellent start for anyone who wants to find out about Faith: Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that are unseen. (Hebrews 11:1) I suggest that you read the complete chapter! In the Gospel of John, Jesus simplified it: Do not let your hearts be troubled. You trust in God, trust also in me. (John 14:1) We are all called by our Heavenly Father, but not all listen. When we listen we are compelled to search out Christ, as we learn from His Word the Holy Spirit instructs and guide us; as we allow the Holy Spirit to govern our will Faith is established!: But it is in that way faith comes, from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17) Now, in Biblical tems hearing does not simply mean listening or hearing people talk/preach about Christ... it means living the Word of God: But you must do what the Word tells you and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves. (James 1:22) Jesus was more exacting, He said it this way: 'Why do you call me, "Lord, Lord" and not do what I say? (John 6:42) Begin your journey by acquiring a Bible, if you do not yet own one. Read the Gosples (John, Matthew, Luke and Mark--this is my own personal reading order) and Hebrews... then work your way through the rest of the Bible--reading twice as much in the New Testament as you do the Old Testament. You can use the Psalms as special prayer to begin or close your Bible study session. Get involved with your congregation--seeking those who are willing to assist you in your learning process. Be truthfull--God is not fooled by our empty hearts and devotions: Don't delude yourself: God is not to be fooled; whatever someone sows, that is what he will reap. If his sowing is in the field of self-indulgence, then his harvest from it will be corruption; if his sowing is in the Spirit, then his harvest from the Spirit will be eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8) Jesus said it a little different, but way more austerely: I know about your activities; how you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other, but since you are neither hot nor cold, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:15-16) Believing "just in case" is as empty as saying: "I believe!"--yet not subjecting ourselves to the Lord's Will! Faith is given to us by the Father, in Jesus, through the Holy Spirit... but we must be active participants: that is, we cannot just join a group/congregation and expect salvation to be gained automatically: Simon Peter, sevant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as our own, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord. By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, through the knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them you should share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion. With this in view, do your outmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding, understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion, devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindess to the brothers with love. The possession and growth of these qualities will prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ from being ineffectual or unproductive. But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washed away. (2 Peter 1:1-9) Believe in God! Start that precious journey with your Bible, today! God Bless! Angel |

31 | God is one | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 121714
Hi, ucmenew! Here's a hint: In the beginnning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. (John 1:1-2) Another: Yahweh declared to my Lord, 'Take your seat at my right hand, till I have made your enemies your footstool.' (Psalm 110:1) And another: but to the Son he says: Your throne, God, is for ever and ever; and: the sceptre of his kingdom is a sceptre of justice; (Hebrews 1:8) And a final one (this one is a triple header): the Spirit of truth whom the world can never accept since it neither sees nor knows him; but you know him, because he is with you, he is in you. (John 14:17) Jesus replied: anyone who loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make a home in him. (John 14:23) We do not determine how God operates or reveals Himself! If God chose to be known as three Divine Persons, why do we concern ourselves with the implications or mysteries of God? We should be concerning ourselves with the revelations He has made, and believe!: So it is not a matter of what any person wants or what any person does, but only of God having mercy. (Romans 9:16) If God reveals Himself as One God (the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit), how can we refuse to believe on the grounds that we do not understand? Do we understand the inner-workings of everything on this world?--but we avail ourselves of that which we want or need! God Bless! Angel |

32 | God orchestrates or allows? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 121924
Hi, eagle eyes! I think that part of the problem is that we take everything to extremes... when we do so we make the Word of God seem lopsided... i.e.: There are those who read the Bible and claim that Jesus cannot be God because Yahweh said, in the Old Testament, that there is only one God. Others look to the verse where Jesus Christ stated that not even the Son of man knew "the hour or the day..."--clearly this, to them, is evidence enough that Jesus cannot be God. Others, still, claim that since God cannot be tempted and Jesus was tempted then it must be that Jesus is not God... What do they miss? They miss Jesus stating that He and the Father are One; that He is the Son of God; that He is the Alpha and the Omega, that He is the Beginning and the End; that He is the Resurrection and the Life; that He is the Good Shepherd... then there are the Father's own words: "Your throne, God, is for ever and ever;" And Thomas' confession: "My Lord and my God!" I could go on with the list... Everything is in God's hands (for He lets the sun shine on both the just and the unjust; He allows the rain to fall on both the good and the bad--paraphrased!)... Does that translate into everyone in the world being puppets whose strings are pulled by God at His whim? God causes all things to happen for the good of those He loves: Jesus died on the cross: the Just for the unjust; the Righteous for the unrighteous... Satan sets death onto the world, God sets Life onto the world--for all to benefit, all who believe and obey that is! When Yahweh said "choose life..." He was offering a choice with a built-in safety... When Jesus said "if you abide in me..." He was offering us that same choice with that same built-in safety: "be holy for I am Holy." We are called to perfection; but, God does not use tricks or strings to control our decisions. As Paul said: 'For me everthing is permissible'; maybe, but not everthing does good. True, for me everything is permissible, but I am determined not to be dominated by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12) Is Paul saying that because he is living by Grace he can do anything he desires... No! He is saying that in God we are free to choose anything that we want to do or have... But he quickly counters that not everything does good--anything that keeps us from being one with Chirst is not good for our spiritual wellbeing! Though God does not want anybody to die, He will not force-feed us Salvation: But the rest of the human race, who escaped death by these plagues, refused either to abandon their own handiwork or to stop worshipping devils, the idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood that can neither see nor hear nor move. Nor did they give up their murdering, or witchcraft, or fornicating or stealing. (Revelation 9:20-21) but though people were scorched by the fierce heat of it, they cursed the name of God who had the power to cause such plagues, and they would not repent and glorify him. (Revelations 16:9) Surely, God has our best interest at heart (Romans 10:28), but He allows us freedom to choose Him over everything else (John 1:12-13 and Romans 10:16). God Bless! Angel |

34 | what about a Bible study??? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 122541
Hi, Mike! Paul had many things to say... he presented many arguments... they all centered on Jesus! Here's a little tip he left us: Do not stifle the Spirit or despise the gift of prophecy with contempt; test everything and hold on to what is good and shun every form of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22) I recommend the same... whatever your endeavor and however you engage a Bible study: humble yourself to the Holy Spirit, ask Him for guidance, seek the advise of others, test the responses in light of the Holy Scriptures, and confide on our Lord to enlighten your mind and spirit. God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Mike! I am not seeking to complicate the study... it's just that in the past I had a few study partners that would seek to divorse the study material from the rest of the Bible... though I am not a scholar, I do believe that we can only see the total meaning of the Scriptures when viewed in the light of the complete Bible: God does not change and His Word is both eternal and transcendent... we cannot pick and choose but accept Him as He revealed Himself! God Bless! Angel |

37 | Determining when an answer is received | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 122819
Hi, Aba! I've read your question and the responses to it... EdB was right on the money! What is wrong with today's "feel-good-get-what-you-want" movements is that they want to mold Jesus and the Bible to their capricious desires... True, Christ did say that we are to ask and believe that what we asked for will be given to us by God, but He also COMMANDED: 'In your prayers do not babble as the gentiles do, for they think that by using many words they will make themselves heard. Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him. So you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. (Matthew 6:7-10) "Your will be done" is a forgotten part of many of the cultist propaganda--along with "your Father knows what you need." Our Father sees the complete picture all of the times, we see partially and imperfectly. If we pray as in Luke 11:13, in Jesus, we will surely have more than what we asked. But we have to remember that God is not a cash machine, a miracle-worker (magician for hire), nor a match-maker! God Bless! Angel |

38 | Norm, Is the way the same for all ? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 123183
Hi, Searcher56! Though we diverge from the Truth, the Way has to be the same for all: Jesus said: I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) My one command to them was this: Listen to my voice, then I will be your God and you shall be my people. In everything, follow the way that I mark out for you, and you shall prosper. (Jeremiah 7:23) Sadly, now a days everybody wants to establish his/her "way," rejecting the Creator and conforming to the creatures! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Mike! One problem that we have today is that we seek instant gratification (fast lives, fast food, fast relationships)... Jesus revealed His relationship with God (beyond our human relationship) at the age of twelve... but He did not rush a single moment. In fact His first miracle was performed at the bequest of His mother (John 2:1-11). Pray to our Lord Jesus Christ, He will lead you to where you are to be... I caution you, do not jump from one place to another (as if taking a cruise in NYC's subway system); Jesus warned that there would come a time when everyone would be claiming to have Him, He warned don't go there! (Matthew 24:23-26) I recomend that you begin by praying (do some fasting if you are accostomed to it), search the Holy Bible, search the Church's history, and put the Holy Scriptures to use: He commanded us to be one with Him as He is One with the Father. That is why He established His Church, to unite us in Him: since as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body... (Ephesians 5:23) ...Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy. He made her clean by washing her in water with a form of words, so that when he took her to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless. (Ephesians 5:25-29) Whatever you do stay in the Faith: Now it is impossible to please God without faith, since anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and rewards those who try to find him. (Hebrews 11:6) Saint James says it this way: If there is any one of you who needs wisdom, he must ask God, who gives to all freely and ungrudgingly; it will be given to him. But he must ask with faith, and no trace of doubt... (James 1:5-6) God Bless! Angel |
