2001 | sin/temptation | Phil 4:8 | Hank | 123682
Mike, Christians are commanded to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5:17), and Jesus taught His disciples to pray for forgiveness of their debts -- and He added, "as we forgive others." (Matt. 6:12). Jesus also included in the model prayer for His followers another petition: "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." (Matt. 6:13). So, you see, in His perfect model prayer, our Lord made provision for both of your concerns, of forgiveness and of the way to deal with temptation and have deliverance from evil. --Hank
2002 | What does Paul mean by being content? | Phil 4:11 | Hank | 96062
didymus - Have you ever known a person who was never satisfied, who always wanted more, and when they got more, they wanted more still? And they were always wanting to change this or change that. They were never satisfied. They couldn't stop to smell the roses. I don't like to be around people like that. They're miserable and make me miserable to be around them. And they don't exemplify the Christian life to my mind. Their thoughts and desires are riveted to the world and the things of the world. I find it hard to see Christ in them. So what Paul is saying in Philippians 4:11 is that he has learned how to live in Christ in such a way that outward circumstances don't really matter all that much. He has got his pecking order worked out and his priorities straight. The main thing, in fact, the only truly important thing, in his life is his Lord. Everything else is small stuff, and what's that they say? -- "Don't sweat the small stuff." I believe this is the nitty-gritty of Paul's meaning here. When I get a case of the fidgets and find myself dissatisfied and wanting this or wanting that, I come back and take another long look at this verse and reflect on the life of Paul and the hardships he suffered for our Lord. And I always walk away with a clearer head about what is truly worthwhile in life. .... Thanks for the question, didymus, and for teaching me by affording me the opportunity to try to answer it, for it is the answerer who learns more than the questioner. --Hank
2003 | Where is Philippians 4:19 located? | Phil 4:19 | Hank | 121493
You need to fine Philippians 4:19? Why? Has it done something wrong? -:) .... To find it, go to "Get Bible Text" and type in Philippians 4:19. --Hank
2004 | Is healing given in the atonement? | Col 1:22 | Hank | 77766
If by "atonement" you mean the work of reconciliation that Christ accomplished on the cross, and if by "healing" you mean the forgiveness of sins, then yes, there is healing in the atonement: "And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight." [Col. 1:20-22] The atonement was for deliverance from sin. Scripture does not support the idea that physical healing is encompassed by the atonement. --Hank
2005 | Adam and Eve truth or fiction? | Col 2:8 | Hank | 143694
Dear James - Doc gave you sound advice. Unless you are well grounded in Scripture -- and I stress WELL GROUNDED! -- and sufficiently equipped with the skills and knowledge required to defend your faith in the hostile environment of intellectually sharp and highly skilled (albeit deceived) minds that you are likely to encounter in secular academe, it is prudent that you merely state that you believe the Bible and fully accept it as God's inerrant word and your sole guide for faith and practice. No matter how fervently a Christian believes the Bible, unless he is highly skilled in apologetics, the professsors will chew him up and spit him out. Until such time as you may be enabled, with God's grace, to hone your skills and mature more fully in your walk with Christ, the two most effective things you can do here and now are to lean heavily on witnessing by the power of example and to rely heavily on the power of prayer. It's easy to dismiss the latter, but as Tennyson has observed, "More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of." Scripture says, "The effectual, fervent prayer of a rightous man availeth much" (James 5:16). May God strenghten your Christian witness and empower you to grow mightily in His grace and knowledge. --Hank
2006 | Cain's Wife | Col 2:8 | Hank | 143699
James - Your learned professor's question concerning the genesis of Cain's wife is more revelatory of scriptural ignorance than scriptural knowledge and of intellectual naivete more than sophistication or academic erudition. You might ask him whether he has ever considered the possibility that she, like Cain, was a descendent of Adam and Eve. After all, the Bible is clear that Adam had other sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4) and that he lived to the ripe old age of 930 years (Genesis 5:5), during which he along with his descendents could well have been fruitful and multiplied to a considerable extent so that it is not mathematically impossible by any means that the earth could have contained thousands of human beings by the time Adam died. Your professor's argument is old hat and is neither clever nor convincing. --Hank
2007 | What day do YOU attend church? | Col 2:16 | Hank | 25515
Apparently, charis, you do assume too much -- things like assuming that if you ask a simple, direct question you will get a simple, direct answer. I suffer from the same affliction myself, but regular doses of this forum are beginning to ameliorate my symptoms :-) --Hank
2008 | Why do we have Jesus stuck in a manger? | Col 2:16 | Hank | 107687
There is clear evidence that the infant Jesus was laid in a manger. No evidence exists that He ever was stuck in it. ..... It is singularly difficult to die physically without having been born physically. --Hank
2009 | Sabbath or Sunday | Col 2:16 | Hank | 164949
Ocelot: Thanks for registering on Study Bible Forum and welcome to it. Thanks also for your question on the Sabbath, a question that appears to be one of genuine inquiry instead of a thinly disguised ploy to promulgate Adventism. Pushing such a denominational bias as this or any other is, of course, not allowed. Kalos has offered a thoughtful response to your inquiry and so have other users; therefore, I opt not to add anything substantive to their responses, but instead to suggest that you use the Search mechanism available on this site inasmuch as your topic has been dealt with at great length. It is much like sawing sawdust to create another long thread on Adventism when a number of threads already exist. So I invite you, if you are so inclined, to use Search. Simply type in the key word Sabbath and it will take you to scores of posts that cover a span of nearly five years of Forum history. I should think that at least some of them will be helpful to you. --Hank
2010 | easter egg hunt in sanctuary | Col 3:1 | Hank | 201512
No, windsongchloe, I do not believe it is wrong for you to be upset by your church's allowing its sanctuary to be turned into a hiding place for Easter eggs! That would upset me too, big time. ...... How does hiding Easter eggs in God's house glorify Him? What does hiding eggs have to do with worshiping the resurrected Christ? When these kids grow up, are they going to remember the sanctuary as the place where people worshipped God -- or where they had fun searching for Easter eggs? Those seem fair enough questions to ask, and they should be asked of your pastor and the church's leadership. ...... Do they not know that the very word "Easter" comes from the name of a pagan goddess of spring, that bunnies and eggs are also associated with pagan rites, and that modern Easter is nothing on earth but a crassly commerical claptrap designed to sell chocolate bunnies, egg-filled baskets and frilly clothing? ...... Many churches, including the church that my wife and I are members of, do not use the word Easter at all, but instead call the day Resurrrection Sunday. And we do not sponsor Easter-egg hunts! --Hank
2011 | Is it wrong to? | Col 3:5 | Hank | 121424
ripken: The question has been asked several times before, so it is highly unlikely that the old-time regulars on the Forum will be shocked by it. Perhaps you would be interested in reading a number of posts on the subject. Simply use Quick Search and type in the word masturbate. Also masturbation and masterbation (a common misspelling). You may or may not find what you are looking for and you may not agree with the views expressed. This Forum is not the definitive last word on every biblical topic by any means. A large number of the posts are good and biblically supported; some are neither. --Hank
2012 | Pauls Letter to the Thessalonians? | 1 Thessalonians | Hank | 22742
Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ and his Thessalonian letters are two of several he wrote to various churches and individuals. A careful reading of the two letters will provide you with ample knowledge of their content. --Hank
2013 | Is there a free Bible? | 1 Thessalonians | Hank | 156325
New: Libraries lend books but usually don't give them away. Some churches distribute free Bibles to whoever wants them -- I know the church I belong to certainly does; it's a very large downtown Baptist Church. If you are strapped for funds, you might try used bookstores or thrift shops such as Goodwill or Salvation Army. I've seen hard-cover and soft-cover Bibles at these places for as little as a dollar or so. A Christian friend would probably be happy to give you a copy of the Bible. Since you are new to the Bible, stick with one of the better modern-language versions, such as New King James Version, New American Standard Bible or New International Version. God bless your search for a Bible and your reading and study of His holy word. --Hank
2014 | Paul remembered what 3 things inThes.1-2 | 1 Thessalonians | Hank | 194770
Dear lizliz1296 - We try to be helpful whenever we can and respond to questions as well as we know how. But liz, wouldn't it be better if you got a pencil and paper and a copy of the Bible and sat down and read 1 Thessalonians 1 and 2 for yourself, jotting down Paul's rembrances as you studied the passage? Your question sounds much like a typical "textbook" question, an assignment in a Bible course perhaps. Is it? If it is, you will profit much more by digging out the answer for yourself (it is not hard to find) instead of copying an answer that some of us on Bible Study Forum might give you. If I am way off base and this is not a homework assignment, and if you are unable to find the answer in the text, let us know and we'll be happy to help you. But first, please see what you can do on your own. May God bless your efforts as you study His word. --Hank
2015 | What was the city called? | 1 Thess 1:1 | Hank | 49824
angelface, the city of the Thessalonians was Thessalonica [modern Salonica], the capital city of Macedonia in Paul's time. The political and commercial hub of Macedonia, a Roman province, Thessalonica had a population of some 200,000 in the first century A.D. The apostle Paul wrote two epistles to the church of the Thessalonians that are part of our New Testament Canon. --Hank
2016 | If it's ONLY foreplay is it still wrong? | 1 Thess 4:3 | Hank | 112094
Consider the word "foreplay" very carefully. Why is it called "foreplay" if not that it is the prelude to more intimate involvement? Young people, you are playing with fire when you "just want to have a little fun" as you call it. The libido is strong in youth, and when the fires of passion are fed by allowing yourselves to "have a little fun," watch out! The fact is, you don't know that it won't go any further. Many unwed teens who wanted to "have a little fun" have ended up as parents who are quite unprepared for the enormous duties and responsibilities of parenthood. If you truly love, honor, and respect one another, save the "fun" for the marriage bed! --Hank
2017 | sex with ex-wife | 1 Thess 4:3 | Hank | 196063
Obviously an ex-wife is no longer a wife, the bond of marriage having been severed by divorce. To engage in intimate relations with such a woman is therefore as much a sin as having sex with any other woman outside of marriage. It is immoral. and immorality is solidly condemned in Scripture. See, for example, 1 Cor. 6:18; 7:12; 2 Cor. 12:21; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 5:5; 1 Thess. 4:3. --Hank
2018 | Happy in heaven | 1 Thess 4:13 | Hank | 158437
DGB454: Over the years -- I've been a Christian for more than 55 years -- I've thought about heaven. And hell. I've pondered over the apostle John's description of the new Jerusalem, the dwelling place throughout eternity for all the saints of all the ages. ...... Your question has several components and is prefaced by "if." And, theologically speaking at least, it's always the "if" questions that are the hardest, if not outright impossible, to answer. And I sincerely believe that your question -- I do not chide you for asking it -- falls well within the category of impossible to answer. Please permit me an explanation. ..... We think of the apostle Paul as having manifold spiritual gifts, and we regenerate believers affirm that every word he wrote in our New Testament Canon was God-breathed. But though we hold to these truths firmly, we also know that God the Holy Spirit did not choose to reveal everything even to His servant, Paul. "We know in part," said Paul in 1 Cor. 13:9, "and we prophesy in part." He continued in vs. 12, "For now we see in a mirror darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known." Paul did not know it all, and neither do we. ....... I believe there's more to heaven than our finite minds can contain! Christ gave us a glimpse of heaven in His Revelation penned by His apostle John. One would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful passage in all Scripture than Revelation 21 and 22. It does not speak to the second leg of your question, "How can we rejoce in heaven knowing a loved one is suffering in hell?" It doesn't establish that we will, in fact, know about the loved one suffering in hell. ...... But it does speak to the first part of your question, viz., "how can we rejoice in heaven?" And it is so beautifully written -- in my view it's one of the supremely beautiful passages in all the Bible, indeed in all literature. Here's what it says: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away." (Rev. 21:4). Perhaps the last half dozen words, "the former things are passed away" will help you work through your question about remembrance of loved ones. I don't know, and I hesitate to go beyond what Scripture reveals, because when we go out on our own speculative theological safaris, we invariably get lost in the jungle. ...... Your question is indeed a complex one and a good one, save for its beleaguerment by suppositional phrases which always present very difficult theological challenges! In any event, I do hope that this response proves to be of some benefit to you. Kalos and Makarios gave good responses from a slightly different perspective. Please study them carefully. And....Welcome to our midst! In Christ, --Hank
2019 | want your opionion | 1 Thess 4:15 | Hank | 209370
Dear Jack :: In welcoming you to Study Bible Forum, I'd also like to point out that srbaegon, jlhetrick and Azurelaw have given you biblical references to your question but have not given you their opinions. ...... So, since it is an opinion you want, suppose I come forth with unmitigated brashness and say to you that it is my opinion that Christ will come at 6:46 Greenwich Mean Time on the morning of August 19, 2022. I have no Scripture with which to back up my opinion. I can't even back it up using the Daily Horoscope from my morning newspaper. And, to be perfectly honest, I can't even back the opinion up with anything more substantial than thin air. So what possible benefit can you or anyone else derive from my opinion? I don't even believe it myself, because to tell the truth, I have no such wild opinion as that. As with all other matters of religious faith and practice, I base my belief on the Second Coming of our Lord soley on what the Bible says, and it says that no one knows the day or the hour (see Matthew 25:1-13). ...... Please consider the all-important difference between asking "What is your opinion about thus and so?" and "What does the Bible teach about thus and so?" --Hank
2020 | Jesus speaks as the archangel? | 1 Thess 4:16 | Hank | 8873
Well, in the first place, the Bible does not reveal a great deal about the ranks or organization of the heavenly beings we call angels. Jude 9 does, of course, name Michael as an archangel, but Daniel 10:13 speaks of him as being "one of" not "the only one."......The passage, 1 Thess.4:16 says "the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God..." The phrase, "with the voice of an archangel" no more means that Christ will become Michael the archangel than the next phrase, "and with the trumpet of God" means that Christ will become a trumpet..... If, in fact, the cult to which you refer interprets this verse in such a way, it is by no means the only unorthodox twist they have made to the meaning of Scripture. --Hank
