1862 | Suicide: a question on sin | 1 Cor 6:20 | Hank | 160731
Dear Tom - Suicide is by definition self-murder, and the Sixth Commandment says, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13. But I would like to ask you the source and exact meaning of your statement, "I understand that you cannot get to Heaven thru suicide." One's views on whether eternal life is truly eternal, a gift of God's grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8) or whether it is contingent on works for its continuance certainly would affect one's thinking about the security of the salvation of the believer. ..... As for the question of accepting or refusing medical treatment, I cannot speak for God! The best I can do is relate to you how I dealt with this issue personally. Ten years ago after a second heart attack, I was given strong medical advice to undergo quadruple by-pass surgery. I did. Two years ago I was again strongly advised by a team of cardiologists to have a defibrillator installed. I did that too. Now, past 70, I feel fine, am not disabled, and enjoy life to the fullest. ...... My body is not my own and who am I to decide when and how it will die? The Scripture says, "For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:30, NKJV). --Hank
1863 | God and His creation | 1 Cor 7:1 | Hank | 173108
Corin, dear user, haven't we been on this same theme long enough? Unless I am much mistaken, you have asked essentially the same questions and expressed virtually the same concerns on the same topic over and over. ..... While you are certainly welcome to use the Forum to ask Bible questions (that's one of its prime purposes), and not one wishes to thwart your keen interest in God's word by any means, please do take care to make sure your questions are questions and not merely statements, as is the case with this correspondence to which this post is a response. And, having asked your question on a specific topic, please read the responses it fetches and then move on to something else. The Bible contains score upon score of subjects. Why not diversify and learn something about a number of them? God bless you as a "baby Christian" who is seeking to grow in the faith. Be as one of the newborn infants who "long for the pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow up to salvation -- if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good." (see 1 Peter 2:2,3). --Hank
1864 | EXPLAIN THIS TO ME | 1 Cor 7:4 | Hank | 168450
brazz: We'd be happy to try to explain "this" to you if we only knew what "this" is! :-) Based on the information you've given us, about all we can tell you about "this" is this: It can be a singular demonstrative pronoun, adjective or adverb, depending on its usage in a sentence and usually refers to a person, thing or idea that is present or near in place, time, or thought. --Hank
1865 | is it wrong to masterbate? | 1 Cor 7:9 | Hank | 2680
Charlene, I believe this passage cleary refers in broad terms to the libido, the sex drive ("burn with passion"), that God implanted in us at creation, not only to insure obedience to His command to "be fruitful and multiply" but to provide a means to express and share, in an intimate and pleasurable way, the love of spouse, one for the other. In that love they become "one flesh" meaning, among other things, that they become as one in conjugal union. Genesis 38:9 that has been cited in reference to masturbation, but a careful reading of that passage would suggest that Onan was practicing coitus interruptus, not masturbation. The one form of sexual activity that clearly and incontrovertibly has the sanction of our Creator is sex within marriage. Of any other form the Bible is either condemnatory or silent. Paul does mention in this passage "self-control" -- something the believer should make every effort to exercise in every area of his life every day of his life. I believe that this issue, if it becomes troubling to a Christian should, along with all others, first be taken to the Lord in prayer and, if so led, discussed with a trusted pastor or other qualified Christian counselor.
1866 | is it wrong to masterbate? | 1 Cor 7:9 | Hank | 52166
Dear Charlene, you spoke of not wanting to commit a sin of omission; really, the context of your sentence calls for the word "commission." A sin of omission is failure to do something that one clearly ought to do. One of commission is doing something that the Bible proscribes (forbids, prohibits). Now we come to your question on the subject of masturbation: Is it a sin? The Bible does not speak directly on this subject. Scripture does teach that the physical act of sex is something God ordained for the marriage bed, the union of one man and one woman in holy matrimony. It speaks against pre- and extra-marital heterosexual union, homosexuality, incest, and bestiality. The purely biological function of sex is for procreation. But God also ordained that husband and wife are to become 'one flesh' and I believe that has two facets: both spiritual and physical unions that married couples achieve in the intimacy of the marriage bed. So where does self-gratification fit in God's scheme of things? That is a question for which I cannot cite a specific chapter and verse because there really is none. But looking at the overview of what the Bible sanctions as undefiled sexual activity, it is clearly limited to sex within marriage. This is as close as I can come and the best I can do to answer your question. ...... If you would like to read what some other forum members have had to say on this difficult and somewhat controversial question, please use Search and type in masturbation. You might also try typing in masterbation, since the word has been misspelled quite a number of times on the forum. God bless. --Hank

1868 | is a disobedient christian an unbeliever | 1 Cor 7:15 | Hank | 61820
The briefest, simplest, and in point of fact, the only answer possible to your question is a simple 'no' and for good and cogent reason, which is this: the term "Christian unbeliever" is self-contradictory. There can be no Christian who is not a believer in Christ. Post-salvific disobedience is academic and irrelevant to this issue. --Hank
1869 | divorce is not always a sin. | 1 Cor 7:15 | Hank | 82916
God never sanctions divorce. The conditions under which it is permitted are well documented in Scripture and discussions of this subject may be accessed by using Search and entering the word "divorce." Your analogy of human divorce and God's divorce of Israel is flawed, as are all human efforts to equate their behavior to, or justify their actions by, the mighty acts of Almighty God. We are neither holy nor sovereign. He is both. --Hank
1870 | Does God REQUIRE new believer to divorce | 1 Cor 7:24 | Hank | 66201
Hello, cwade. The Bible never teaches that the penitent sinner, in order to receive God's grace of regeneration through faith in His Son, must reach back in his life and unscramble all eggs, right all wrongs, "uncommit" all past sins. Even a murderer God can forgive, even though a murderer cannot restore the life he has taken. So I believe Reformer Joe's answer is a biblically sound one and thus a good one. The born-again believer is indeed born again; he has a new life in Christ Jesus. It is wise -- it is in fact a command -- to be forgiving as we have been forgiven. And I believe that this teaching embraces not only the forgiving of others but of ourselves. Knowing that God has forgiven us of sin, has blotted them out, we need no longer fetter our lives and dilute our effectiveness as ambassadors for Christ by carrying around our neck a heavy yoke of guilt and remorse. "One thing I do," said Paul, "forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." [Phil. 3:13b,14]...... "I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on;...I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead Thou me on...I loved the garish day, and spite of fears, pride ruled my will: remember not past years." .... Those words are from the second stanza of the beautiful hymn, "Lead, Kindly Light" written by Cardinal John Henry Newman in 1833. --Hank

Ames, even though I feel sure that my colleagues on the forum join me in expressing sorrow in regard to your domestic problems, and in prayer on behalf of you and your family, it would hardly be useful to you to seek or act on advice from the members of this forum because we are neither acquainted with the details of your situation nor qualified as professional counsellors. Please therefore consider seeking help from a trusted pastor or other trained Christian counsellor. For your protection and privacy, it is wise to stay on the side of caution and seek confidential assistance with personal matters such as this rather than air them on a public web site. 1872 | pcdarcan, Are You a Jehovah's Witness? | 1 Cor 8:5 | Hank | 135086
Forum - I'm pulling this question. It has been on the board for three days. Apparently pcdarcan has no intention of answering it. He has posted since the question was asked. He has been asked several times whether he is a Jehovah's Witness. He will not answer. So draw your own conclusion, friends. I have drawn mine. --Hank
1873 | The Emerging Church, is it Biblical? | 1 Cor 9:19 | Hank | 210394
Hi, Brad. Admittedly I'm no authority on this modern phenomenon known as the emerging/emergent church movement. I've attended a single meeting of one congregation which I suspect was a subscriber to the idea. According to some things I've been reading about this movement, it appears to be making some gains in modern ecclesiology, though what permanent impact it may have is uncertain. One would hope that it, not unlike a variety of faddish notions that have "emerged" and quickly died before it, will soon give way and return to the pattern laid down in the New Testament for the New Testament Church of our Lord Jesus Christ. ....... From what I've gleaned from my readings on this new movement, its promoters take the position that what they call the "traditional church" is, to use their terminology, "out of touch" in this age that has been labeled "post modernism." But what do they mean? Just what is being out of touch? Is Christ's church for which He gave His life out of touch? Is the gospel that Paul charged Timothy to preach out of touch? Out of touch how and to whom -- unbelievers, sinners, scoffers, haters of the truth of God's word? Surely if by "traditional church" one means the church that Christ Himself built, it cannot rightly be said that it is "out of touch" of those who surrender themselves to Him and are thereby divinely added to His body, the church. ...... And wherein does Scripture teach that the church must change in order to conform to the mold of the present thinking, conduct and value systems of the "postmodern society" or any other society? Scripture teaches, "Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing pf your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2). ....... The "emergers" talk about new and imaginative ways to meet the needs of the "unchurched." So just what are the needs of the unchurched? New and imaginative "purpose-driven" programs? Or salvation of their souls? What's wrong with what Paul charged Timothy to do? Paul said, "Preach the word; be ready in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves, teachers having itching years; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables" (2 Timothy 4:2-4). Are the "emergers" by their emphasis on new and imaginative ways of doing things forgetting that it is the gospel of Christ, not "purpose-driven programs, that is the power of God unto salvation? (Romans 1:16). ....... There is no such thing as an emerging church and no such thing as an emerging gospel. The church is the body of Christ, so how on earth can it be said that it is in any sense "emerging"? And there is no biblcal sense in which the gospel is "emerging" -- certainly not. It is about this gospel that Jude wrote when he penned these words: "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3). ....... In summary, doesn't it make more sense simply to dedicate oneself to preaching the word of God (2 Tim 4:2), to let God add to the church those whom He saves -- that's His business anyway -- (Acts 2:47), and forget all this "emerging church" nonsense? ..... A good although short treatment of this emerging church movement is at the following link: http://www.gotquestions.org/emerging-church-emergent.html and at the end of the article the editors cite a book by John MacArthur called, "The Truth War: Fighting for Certainty in an Age of Deception." --Hank
1874 | new christian | 1 Cor 10:13 | Hank | 80733
Andyamanda66: Proverbs 3:5 is good to know, for a young Christian or an old one: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding." But please don't stop there. The Bible says, "Thy word have I hidden in mine heart that I might not sin against thee." [Psalm 119:11]. Form the habit of reading a portion of God's Word every day. Read the Bible in a systematic way, a book at a time. Pray, and ask God to illumine His word for you. Commit favorite passages to memory. Saturate your heart and mind with the eternal truths of Scripture, which is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. [Cf.2 Timothy 3:16]. By the way, the word translated as "inspiration" means literally that the Bible is "God-breathed" -- the words that the human writers penned were supernaturally directed by Almighty God, and thus the Bible records with perfect accuracy God's revelation of Himself to man. I pray that God will lead your path as you continue to walk in faith in Christ Jesus. --Hank

1878 | Woman head covering valid for today? | 1 Cor 11:10 | Hank | 3724
Dear Dave, your Christian humility that so clearly comes through in your question should be the envy of us all who call ourselves Christian. My heart is touched by it. Now, to your question. The clear point the apostle Paul is making in these verses to the church at Corinth embraces a theme far more extensive that wearing or not wearing head covers. In the culture of Corinth the covered head of the woman during worship was a symbol of her subordinate relationship to her husband. The apostle is not laying down an absolute law for women to wear head coverings in all churches for all time. In the Corinthian church of Paul's time, it would have been a sign of a wife's rebellion against her husband's divinely directed role in the marriage relationship for her to show up at a worship service with her head unadorned by a veil or other covering. The issue then is not head coverings per se. The broader issue is obedience to God's commands. In other cultures of Paul's day wearing head coverings or not would have been a moot issue because it held no symbolism for them. The same holds true today. A wife wearing a hat in a church in Chicago may have a good relationship with her husband, but a wife sitting bare-headed in the next pew may have an even better one. In our culture, the hat has no symbolic meaning; it says nothing. But it did to the Corinthians at the time Paul wrote this letter to them. It is the symbolic meaning, not the hat, that Paul is addressing. Hank.
1879 | Communion, how often? | 1 Cor 11:25 | Hank | 4276
Charis, since Jesus said only "as often as you do this" it should be in remembrance of Him, one would be hard pressed, it seems to me, to attach any mandatory time schedule to the sacred ordinance. There are those communions who observe the Lord's Supper weekly or even more frequently. There are others who observe it less frequently, perhaps monthly or quarterly. In the church I attend, it is the view that too frequent an observance runs the risk of causing it to become merely a routine observance, mechanical and diluted in meaning. When we observe the Lord's Supper, the entire service -- the music, the pastor's message, everything -- is dedicated to this one ordinance of our Lord. It is beautiful and truly meaningful. --Hank
