841 | why would God allow his son to die fo us | John 3:16 | Hank | 137808
shael - If your friend is an atheist, one wonders why she bothers to ask questions about the God whose existence she denies. Some verses that may help to guide your thinking are as follows: John 10:30; 14:9,10; Micah 5:2; John 5:23; Col. 2:9. ..... God did not murder His Son! Jesus' death was voluntary, vicarious, substitutionary, propitiatory, and redemptive. Read carefully John 10:15; Romans 3:24,25; 5:8 and 1 Peter 2:24. ..... You might consider suggesting to your skeptic friend the works of C. S. Lewis, paricularly "Surprised by Joy" and "Mere Christianity," and Josh McDowell's "The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict." These gentlemen are distinguished apologists for the Christian faith, and their message is made all the more remarkable and compelling because of something they have in common. Lewis and McDowell were once atheists. --Hank
842 | Who is this person Jesus Christ? | Mark 1:1 | Hank | 137789
RLC - It's a matter of whether you want your research paper to reflect man's view of Christ or Scripture's view. As a believer, I am much more inclined to go to the seminal source, the Scriptures. They provide the answer, authoritative and complete, to the question, Who is Christ Jesus? --Hank
843 | what does it mean to fast | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 137439
nae-nae 04 - Kalos' post is an excellent one on this thread. If you would like some supplementary reading on biblical fasting, and can avail yourself of Holman's or Harper's Bible Dictionary, each contains fine articles under the heading "Fasting." ...... Biblical fasting always has to do with the abstinence from food and sometimes water. Fasting is not absention from sex, TV, or Scrabble! -:) --Hank

BelieverNChrist - "The author of Hebrews is unknown. Paul, Barnabas, Silas, Apollos, Luke, Philip, Priscilla, Aquila, and Clement of Rome have been suggested by different scholars, but the epistle's vocabulary, style, and various literary characteristics do not clearly support any particular claim." ... 845 | liking someone who is way older than you | Luke 2:40 | Hank | 137411
Dear cute-46 - No, you're right; the Bible doesn't say anything about "liking" an older man. But it says a great deal about wisdom. Go to the "Quick Search" on this page, type in the word "wisdom" and see what you find. There is a great deal more involved in boy-girl relationships than simply "liking" the person. At age 17 you are much too young to get involved in a romantic relationship with a man who is almost three times your age. By the time you blossom into womanhood, he'll be on Social Security! You're playing with fire, young lady. Date Christian boys near your own age. --Hank

Note where Paul places his emphasis in 1 Corinthians 11:17-29. It is not on the elements of the Lord's Supper but on the manner in which they are partaken. --Hank
847 | CLARIFICATION of Gen. 1:26 | Gen 1:26 | Hank | 137143
Tamed - Genesis 1:26 is the first clear indication in the Bible of the triunity of God -- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (See also Gen. 3:22 and 11:7). The very name of God (Gen. 1:1) is Elohim in the Hebrew, a plural form of El. The distinctive and essential Christian doctrine of the trinity is not polytheistic, as detractors maintain, but wholly monotheistic -- one God in three Persons. The Amplified Bible (q.v.) gives an excellent rendition of Gen. 1:26 --Hank

DE ANDERSON - Please give your question more lucency by defining your terms "handle" and "saved sinner." And why "5 steps"? This sounds as though it could be a textbook question from a Bible course. Is it? --Hank

853 | what do you do when you feel no love.... | Matt 22:37 | Hank | 136384
Dear Amanda - Don't take counsel of your feelings! God loves you and His love for you does not depend on your feelings. Many years ago the great reformer Martin Luther sat alone in a church pew, his eyes gazing on a cross that hung on the wall behind the chancel area. As he gazed, tears began to stream down his face. He stood and with arms outstretched toward the cross, he whispered to himself over and over, "Fur mich! Fur mich!" [For me! For me!]. Later Luther related this experience that he had while sitting alone in an empty church sanctuary. He explained that for the first time in his life he realized that Jesus loved him so much that had he, Martin Luther, been the only sinner on earth, the Lord Jesus still would have gone to the cross and died for him so that he, believing in Christ, would have forgiveness for his sins and eternal life in heaven. As He did Martin Luther, God so loved you, Amanada, that He gave His only begotten Son so that you, believing on Him, should not perish but have eternal life. (See John 3:16). ...... Why not try this -- go to "Get Bible Text" at the right of this screen and type in the words _God love_. You will be led to over 100 passages of Scripture. Some of them command us to love God and some of them affirm God's love for us. Pick from among this large list a few verses that seem especially meaningful to you personally and commit them to memory. Saturate your mind with God's precious word. I could recommend no better antidote to the terrible and lonely feeling of being unloved. ...... Talk with God. Pray. Pour your cares out to Him and humbly ask Him to restore your heart to joy and gladness and to the confident faith that He loves your with an intensity that passes human understanding. "Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken." [Psalm 55:22]. ..... As for feeling unloved by family and friends, the surest way to snap out of that feeling is to obey Christ by loving your neighbor as yourself. In Mark 12:31 Jesus called this the second greatest commandmant, second only to loving God. Ben Franklin said, "People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages." -- And they make themselves miserable too! ..... What follows is one of the lovelist of prayers in all the world. It is by St. Francis of Assisi. I hope that it speaks to you in a special way, Amanda ....... "Lord, make me a channel of thy peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love ..... that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness .... that where there is discord, I may bring harmony ..... that where there is error, I may bring truth ..... that where there is doubt, I may bring faith ..... that where there is despair, I may bring hope ..... that where there are shadows, I may bring light ..... that where there is sadness, I may bring joy ..... Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted ..... to understand than to be understood ..... to love than to be loved ..... For it is by self-forgetting that one finds ..... It is by forgiving that one is forgiven .... It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life." ...... The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord shine His countenance upon you, the Lord be gracious unto you and give you peace. --Hank

859 | for by grace you have been saved through | Heb 10:26 | Hank | 136218
Hi, k.james - Proceeding if we may on the premise that Paul's NT letters constitute Scripture, that all Scripture is inspired of God (2 Timothy 3:16), and that therefore Scripture cannot contradict Scripture, let's compare what Paul said in Ephesians 2:8,9 with Philippians 2:12. He told the Ephesians that salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. He called it the gift of God that cannot be attained by works. He told the Philippians to work out (but not work for) their salvation with fear and trembling. What does this mean? Is the salvation spoken of here in Philippians the same thing as the salvation spoken of in Ephesians? In the NT salvation has several different meanings. In Philippians 1:19 the word that the KJV renders salvation means deliverance (from prison). In 1:28 it refers to the eventual salvation of our bodies from the very presence of sin. In Ephesians 2:8 "saved" means salvation of the soul. ..... In Philippians 2:12 the meaning is illuminated by the context of the whole chapter. The meaning of any passage of Scripture or of any word in Scripture is usually made clearer by a careful inspection of the context, and the meaning in any particular case must be determined at least in part by the context. Taking into consideration the immediate context of Philippians 2, factoring in Ephesians 2:8-10, and further considering all New Testament teaching on salvation by grace alone through faith alone, we must conclude in exegeting this verse that Paul is not teaching salvation by works. The salvation spoken of here is not that of the soul but deliverance from the snares which would hinder the Christian from doing the will of God. In this passage "salvation" is best viewed as meaning the deliverance from, by effecting the solution to, the problem that was vexing the Philippians, that is, their contentions. This is the interpretation which best fits the context and which at the same time does not conflict with the biblical doctrine of salvation by grace through faith, not of works. At all events, Paul never says "work FOR your salvation. --Hank
860 | What was gained? | Gen 3:6 | Hank | 136114
Hello again, Newbie - Sin takes many forms. Ultimately all sin, regardless of form, is disobedience of God's commandments. It is rebellion against God. We cannot presume to know what went on in the mind of Eve when she partook of the forbidden fruit and passed it on to Adam. Neither do we know why Adam took and ate the fruit that Eve offered him. So often in Scripture God paints in broad strokes, as He did in the Genesis account of the Fall. We simply don't have all the details. We are not told whether Eve and her husband were acting in open rebellion against God. We do know that God commanded them not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and told them they would surely die if they did. Scripture tells us that the serpent deceived Eve. He lied to her and she believed him. Had she not understood God's commandment, had she forgotten it, or did she both understand and remember yet believed the serpent instead of God? What about Adam? Same quesions, had he not understood God, had he forgotten what God said, did he want to please his wife more than God? We simply don't know the answers to all these questions. We do know that Adam and Eve disobeyed the commandment of God. Do all the details really matter? We know that they fell and were cast from Eden and through them sin and death came into the world: "for since by a man came death, by a man came the resurrection of the dead, for as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive" [1 Cor. 15:21,22]. ..... Christ did not die merely to cleanse us from Adam's sin, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" [Romans 3:23] and "just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned" [Romans 5:12]. By Adam's fall paradise was lost. By Christ's death on the cross, paradise is regained by those who believe in Him. Other Scripture references that I have used in preparing this post are the first three chapters of Genesis; 1 John 2:16; and 1 Timothy 2:14. ..... Soli Deo Gloria! --Hank
