781 | How does this verse apply to today? | James 1:13 | Hank | 145554
Jenn28: It is not "they" who say God does not tempt anyone: the Bible says it, in James 1:13: "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.' The passage goes on to say, in vs. 14, "But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires, and enticed." And it continues (vs. 15), "Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death." ..... God does purpose trials to occur and in them He allows temptation to happen but not beyond the believer's capacity to endure nor without providing a means of escape: "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13). ...... One chooses, therefore, whether to take the escape route God provides or to succumb to the temptation. Temptation always brings one to a crossroads: he chooses whether to doubt God and be "drawn away by his own desires and enticed" (James 1:14), or he chooses to trust and obey God. --Hank
782 | Why do some sermons misrepresent truth? | Rev 22:18 | Hank | 145549
Gilderd ::: Thanks for your question and for voicing your concern about the content of some of the sermons that are being delivered in our time. While I don't mean to down play any of the specific criticisms you cited, I offer that they are trivial by comparison to other more serious things that are being preached from pulpits these days. From a multitude of examples here are a few. Congregations of worshipers are being told to name it and claim it: the infamous and heretical Word of Faith Movement. Others are being told that a woman has a right to choose: to get an abortion if she chooses, and for any reason at all. Other sermons promote and encourage unrepentent practicing homosexuals to be admitted to the fellowship of the saints and, in fact, to be ordained as bishops or allowed to serve in other positions of leadership within the church, the body of Christ. Many is the sermon today that paints God as a fuzzy old celestial elf in the sky who would not harm a fly, much less condemn any human being to hell. I've heard sermon after sermon in which terms such as hell, sin, repent, the shedding of blood, the wrath of God, and obedience to God's commands were never, never mentioned. In short, the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ to sinners who are dead in their sins and surely on their way to hell has given way to an alarming degree to a fuzzy wuzzy, feel-good religion that is carefully engineered to tickle the ears and entertain. It isn't a new wrinkle by any means. Charles Haddon Spurgeon fought it in his day, calling the dumbing-down of the Christian message the "down grade." Well, what began to go "down grade" in Spurgeon's time has continued steadily since. When one begins to think it has sunk as low as it can go, someone comes along with yet another trick to pull it farther into the pits. God have mercy on us and jar us back into our senses! --Hank

788 | Why did Jesus encourage to betray? | John 13:27 | Hank | 145025
iktoose ::: Jesus did not encourage Jesus to betray Him. The devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot to betray Christ (see John 13:2). Now, in 13:27, Satan entered Judas, taking control of him. Knowing this, knowing that the betrayer was now fully determined, the Lord told him to do it quickly. Obviously He was not encouraging Judas to do evil but simply expressing sorrowful resignation. Judas was personally possessed by Satan himself in his betrayal of Jesus. But this does not exonerate Judas, because his evil heart wanted exactly what the devil wanted, the death of Jesus. Satan and Judas were in accord. --Hank
789 | Who was Abraham ? | Gen 17:5 | Hank | 145000
Adex ::: Abraham was the forefather of both the Jews and the Arabs. Originally called Abram, he left Ur in ancient Sumeria to travel to Haram in Syria, eventually migrating to Canaan, a place where God promised him that all his descendants would ultimately dwell. The Bible gives an account of the events in the life of Abraham beginning in Genesis 12 and continuing until his death and burial at the age of 175 years, recorded in Genesis 25. See Hebrews 11:8-12 for a summary statement of the faith of Abraham and of his wife, Sarah. --Hank
790 | Baptism | Matt 3:11 | Hank | 144998
lionheart ::: Baptismal regeneration is a doctrine which affirms that immersion in water is salvific or contributes to salvation. Let's break the term down into its two components, regeneration and baptism, and attempt to give a scripturally sound definition of each. .... REGENERATION - The act of God the Holy Spirit (John 3:5), through the instrumentality of the Word of God (1 Peter 1:23), by which one who is spiritually dead is made alive and brought to share in the resurrection of life (Ephesians 1:19-2:6) and is made a child of God (John 1:12,13). Another term for regeneration is "the new birth." ....... BAPTISM - The immersion in water of one who trusts Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, commonly called "believer's baptism." This immersion in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38), or of the Triunity (Matthew 28:19), neither saves nor contributes to salvation in any way. Whereas only faith is essential for salvation (John 3:36; Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8), Christ commanded that those who become His disciples should be baptized (Matthew 28:19), making baptism essential to obedience. This witness to salvation (witness to but not salvation itself) is testimony of the believer's obedience to the command of Christ. Only immersion (not sprinkling or pouring) fulfills the symbolism: (1) pointing back in history to the death, burial and resurrection of Christ; (2) emphasizing the present in showing the believer's death to sin and resurrection to union with, and new life in, Christ; and (3) looking to the resurrection of the body when Christ comes again (Romans 6:3-5). The term "baptism" is, of course, also used in reference to the coming of the Holy Spirit into the life of a believer at the point of regeneration (1 Corinthians 12:13). ...... SUMMARY: The doctrines of grace hold that man is saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, plus nothing else. Baptism therefore is a witness to salvation but not a contributor in any way. On the other hand, the doctrine of baptismal regeneration considers water baptism a sine qua non, a requisite, of salvation. --Hank
791 | How much water would a jar hold? | Gen 24:15 | Hank | 144996
Cfloyd ::: OK, if you insist on more data, here are some: A gallon of water weighs 8.345404 pounds. Let's say that the 10 camels were moderately thirsty and that each of them drank 20 gallons of water. Unless Rebekah worked out religiously on weight-lifting equipment at Gold's Gym, chances are that about 50 pounds would be about all she could manage at a time. Five gallons of water weigh 41.72702 pounds, and combined with the weight of the water jar gives a gross laden weight approachig 50 pounds. So if Rebekah could draw and carry 5 gallons of water per trip to the spring, and if she gave the 10 camels 20 gallons of water apiece, for a total of 200 gallons, she would have been able to slake the thirst of all 10 camels in 40 trips to the spring. This does not take into account the amount of water that Rebekah gave to Abraham's servant to drink, but it is assumed that he did not drink quite as much as the camels! --Hank

nomad1 ::: Please ponder: which stand should the church have taken: to condemn the overt sexual immorality of the couple and take the risk of hurting their feelings by evicting them, or to look the other way and pretend it didn't exist? How do you know the church did not pray for this couple? Do you have knowledge of the content of the private prayers of each church member? The preacher after all did offer them a viable option: to get married, which apparently they refused. In any event, the young couple made their own decision; the church merely acted on that decision. Following Christ involves a decision of either/or: either Christ or the world. It can never be both/and. --Hank
795 | The Bible written in code ? | Bible general Archive 2 | Hank | 144848
Bruce ::: Who better to tell us than the Author of Scripture about the nature of the Book He wrote? And He is as silent as the tomb on writing in codes! Penning God-breathed words, the Apostle John says that his gospel was "written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" [John 20:31]. John wrote under inspiration of the Holy Spirit in plain language -- the common, everyday Greek of his time -- and so did Paul the Apostle, who wrote that "all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" [2 Timothy 3:16,17]. ...... "That the man of God may be complete" by reading and study of Scripture, without codes, bodes ill for the garbage being dumped from the pens of writers such as Michael Drosnin, who wrote "The Bible Code" some seven years ago; and for Dan Brown who recently came out with "The Da Vinci Code." Drosnin's book is listed as non-fiction while Brown's is listed as fiction, but in essence they are both of them fiction, as are all of the genre of "code" books that have sprung up like weeds since Drosnin published his "The Bible Code" in 1998. Publishers and reviewers alike have used words like "stunning" and "explosive evidence" and "bombshell" to describe these "code" books, and the gullible public obviously have believed their hype, because the books have made the best-seller lists. But so have the Harry Potter tales, and where trustworthiness is concerned, the "code" books are no better guides to understanding the Bible than the Harry Potter tales are. If the purpose of these "code" books is to make money for the authors and publishers, they are by this measure highly successful and have achieved their goal. If, on the other hand, their purpose is to introduce the reader to a reliable new key with which to unlock heretofore hidden meanings of Scripture, they have failed dismally. I know not what all other Christians may think about the rash of "code" books, but this Christian joins a number of other believers who have called them utter nonsense, pure trash, warmed-over garbage. I read Drosnin's "The Bible Code" some few years ago. It didn't make sense to me then and makes no sense to me still that the eternal God of heaven and earth would wait around for some nerd hacking at his computer to reveal to the world the divine message that has been locked up in code for all eternity past. Grimm's Fairy Tales were never so grim as this! --Hank
796 | Perhaps I don't understand these verses | Gen 1:3 | Hank | 144706
bruren 777 ::: The "light" of Gen. 1:3 and the "lights" of Gen. 1:14 are indeed two separate events that occurred at different times; the former on day one of creation and the latter on day four of creation. The "light" of Gen. 1:3 has been variously explained. One of the best explanations I've seen comes from a scientist who is also a committed Christian and able apologist for creationism, Dr. Henry Morris. Writing on Genesis 1:3 and 14, Dr. Morris says: "On the first day [of creation], God had said, 'Let there be light' (Hebrew or). Now He says, 'Let there be lights (Hebrew ma-or). Light energy was activated first [v.3], but now great masses of material (part of the 'earth' elements created on the first day) were gathered together in one of the firmaments, or spaces, of the cosmos -- the space beyond the waters above the space adjacent to the earth. These great bodies were set burning in complex chemical and nuclear reactions, to serve hencforth as light-givers for the earth. The existence of visible light (Gen. 1:3) prior to the establishment of the sun, moon and stars (Gen. 1:16) emphasizes the fact that light (energy) is more fundamental than light-givers. God could just as easily (perhaps more easily) have created waves of light energy as He could have constructed material bodies in which processes function which generate light energy. The first is direct (since God is light), the second indirect." ..... Excerpted from notes on Genesis 1:3 and 1:14: Defender's Study Bible, Annotations by Henry M. 797 | FIRST AND OR SABATH DAY | Acts 15:20 | Hank | 144700
Emmanuel-Samuel ::: In 1 Cor. 16:2 Paul evidently assumes that the church met on Sunday: "On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come." ..... Another indication of the observance of Sunday as the day of meeting of the church in apostolic times is found in Acts 20:7: "Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread i.e., to observe the Lord's Supper], Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight." ....... The risen Lord met with His disciples on two successive Sundays (John 20:19,26). ...... It is evident that, because of the resurrection, Christians had exchanged the Sabbath (Saturday) as the primary day of worship for the first day of the week (Sunday), the day of Christ's victory over the grave (Matt. 28:1; Mark 16:2,9: Luke 24:1; John 20:1). This change in the major day of assembly and worship also serves as a clear distinction between old Judaism on the one hand and new Christianity on the other. The Lord's Day, then, is the first day of the week and is sanctioned by the apostles as the proper day of worship. ....... 798 | What does antinomianism mean? | 2 Pet 2:18 | Hank | 144630
Here's a brief definition of antinomianism: "The view that teaches that the forgiveness found in Christ eliminates the need for any governming law, and thus makes it legitimate for a Christian to do things which the Bible forbids. The word is made up of two Greek terms meaning literally 'against law.'" [--from the Glossary of "The Believer's Study Bible" (Nelson)]. I found a much more extended treatment of this doctrine and its historical background by typing in the single word _antinomianism_ in the Google search box. --Hank

You say you must know where God stands on this issue. I believe you already know.
