641 | could this number mean anything? | John 14:6 | Hank | 156341
faith_21: Dear inquirer, I assure you that I am not "furious about your question," per your request! You will notice that I chose to use Jesus' words of John 14:6 as the Scripture reference to your question, and you may well ask what John 14:6 has to do with your question, and before this post has ended, I hope to be able to show you. ..... Your question has to do with numerology, and numerology can take you a long way, a long way, that is, in the wrong direction. Numerology is old. Pythagoras, who lived some 500 years before Christ, is best known for his famous geometric theorem, but he also dabbled around with mystic doctrines, one of which was numerology. Now considered pseudo-mathematics, numerology is still very much alive in the world of the occult -- fortune tellers, astrologers and other assorted soothsayers -- charlatans and deceivers all -- who will gladly part you from your money and give you absolutely nothing but lies in return. Read what the Bible says about the Egyptian Pharaoh's magicians and diviners in Exodus 7-9. Modern-day numerologists, astrologers, fortune tellers and other fakirs are no more effective or reliable than Pharaoh's magicians were. ..... So, therefore, ardently do I admonish you to stop playing around with numerology. If you are, as you indicate in your bio, a follower of Christ, then by all means follow Him and leave the pagan soothsayers, along with their numerology, to their own devices! You will not find truth in numerology, but you will find truth in Jesus Christ, just as He said in John 14:6. ..... Faith_21, forget this numerology nonsense. It leads to nothing worthwhile and certainly doesn't contribute to, but detracts from, your Christian witness. --Hank

643 | Is there a free Bible? | 1 Thessalonians | Hank | 156325
New: Libraries lend books but usually don't give them away. Some churches distribute free Bibles to whoever wants them -- I know the church I belong to certainly does; it's a very large downtown Baptist Church. If you are strapped for funds, you might try used bookstores or thrift shops such as Goodwill or Salvation Army. I've seen hard-cover and soft-cover Bibles at these places for as little as a dollar or so. A Christian friend would probably be happy to give you a copy of the Bible. Since you are new to the Bible, stick with one of the better modern-language versions, such as New King James Version, New American Standard Bible or New International Version. God bless your search for a Bible and your reading and study of His holy word. --Hank

647 | Malachi 3:8-9 | Mal 3:8 | Hank | 156126
The addressee here in Malachi 3:8,9 was not the church. It was Israel, a theocratic nation, and the tithes and offerings were essentially taxes used to fund the theocracy. Believers in New Testament times still have a responsibility to pay taxes -- to "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's" ... (See Matt. 22:21 and Rom. 13:1-7 and to make freewill offerings -- ..."and to God the things that are God's" (see 1 Cor 16:1,2 and 2 Cor., Chapters 8 and 9. --Hank
648 | Who is "him?" | Heb 12:25 | Hank | 156124
Hello, Mommapbs. The various ways that several translations have treated the second "him" of Hebrews 12:25 is a classic example of interpretation through capitalization of pronouns, a practice of which I've never been especially fond. ...... In the NASB's rendering of this "him" in question, putting it in lower case, one of two possibilities emerge. The first is that this is a glaring printer's error, but that is highly unlikely. The second, and by far the more likely, is that the NASB translators viewed the antecedent of "him" as being someone else than deity, probably Moses at Sinai (see Exodus 20:22; Heb. 8:5). This interpretation is not in conflict with the context of Hebrews 12, for the writer draws a contrast between Sinai and Zion in this chapter, beginning at verse 18. In the absence of any translators' gloss that might shed light, this is the only explanation I can think that appears to fit the facts. ..... The New Living Translation removes all doubt about its translators' interpretation of this verse, substituting "Moses" for "him" in this segment of the verse. But as we know, the NKJV holds to an interpretation of deity, using "Him" instead of "him." The Holman Christian Standard Bible agrees with the NKJV. ..... All things considered, the context appears to lean toward the antecedent of the second "him" being Moses at Sinai, and if this be so, then the NASB is correct in not capitalizing the second "him." ...... It has been said that to capitalize personal pronouns that refer to deity is a gesture of respect and honor. I have never been convinced of the validity of this argument. No version has ever shown more reverence for God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit than the King James Bible, yet it does not capitalize pronouns unless they begin a sentence. The modern practice of capitalizing pronouns that, in the opinion of the translators, refer to deity is a clear infraction of standard English usage and imposes an unwarranted imposition of translator interpretation on the reader. This is illustrated clearly by our text in question, Hebrews 12:25, wherein two translations, the NASB and the NKJV, both claiming to be literal translations, differ in their respective renditions of the pronoun "him," the former casting it in lower case to indicate that the antecedent does not refer to deity, and the latter capitalizing it to indicate that it does. Certain other modern translations, notably the English Standard Version, the New International Version, do not capitalize pronouns whose antecedents are deity, and in this I cannot but feel that they made a wise choice by deferring to the good sense of their readers to be able to determine the proper antecedents for themselves. --Hank
649 | Theological Term: Theotokos | Luke 1:31 | Hank | 155972
Bro. Doc, one aspect of mariolatry which most Protestants reject and on which many Roman Catholics are confused, believing it to be pertinent to Christ but not to Mary, is the doctrine of the immaculate conception. But that the doctrine pertains to Mary is evidenced as follows: ..... In the Constitution Ineffabilis Deus of 8 December 1854, Pius IX pronounced and defined that the virgin Mary "in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin." ..... To your initial question, Doc, I as a Protestant, subscribe to the sola scriptura doctrine of the reformers, and consequently reject any and all doctrines of the virgin Mary save those which Scripture clearly reveals. .... The above quotation on the immaculate conception of Mary comes from the Catholic Encyclopedia and may be accessed at http://www.newadvent.org.cathen/07674d.htm --Hank

FBW, Biblical numerology, if we may call it such, usually calls for much speculation and leads us places we should not go, i.e., into the dark, satanic world of occultism. .... By the way, the word "fifty" appears 87 times in the NAS Bible. Use the "Get Bible Text" search engine on the right of your screen. You may be able to see some sort of special signicance in this number in Scripture, but I certainly can't. --Hank
651 | Are silent protests scriptural? | 1 John 3:17 | Hank | 155865
Bows44: Placing a tape over the mouth with the word "Life" written on it is little if anything more than a Band-Aid approach. It does nothing to solve the underlying problem, which is sin against God and His commandments. In this case it is specifically the Sixth Commandment, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13). We cannot by protesting evil turn it into holiness any more than our legislature can enact laws that turn sinners into saints or our courts ajudicate righteous living and moral conduct from the bench. Christians must learn that the gospel is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16), and regeneration comes from God and from no other (see John 3:3-8). It is therefore our burden to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe the Lord's commandments (Matthew 28:19,20). This is what Christians are commanded to do, and this gospel is what God uses to change lives. God changes lives from the inside out through regeneration. And we are called to be heralds of God's Good News which has power to regenerate. We cannot proclaim the message of the gospel by sticking a tape over our mouths. --Hank
652 | Are we losing our churches to satan? | 2 Thess 2:11 | Hank | 155864
Hi, JWeaver. Yes, the apostate church is a matter of grave concern but not any real surprise to those of us who believe God's word. Our Lord told us how it will be as did Paul writing under the Spirit's inspiration. "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons" (1 Timothy 4:1). The "deceiving spirits" constitute the satanic deception which caused the fall of man (Gen. 3:13; 2 Cor. 11:3) and characterize what is happening in these latter times (Matthew 24:4-14). But thanks be to God, "because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). --Hank
653 | why would the lord use me to speak into | Num 22:28 | Hank | 155861
Babydoll: Of course all Scripture attests to the absolute sovereignty of God. Therefore, God can do what He pleases. Thus to your question of how can God use someone like you, the answer always must be, "Because He IS God!" ..... But that does not prove that God IS using you to reveal anything to your pastor or leaders of the church. We have ample proof that God uses his word, the Bible, to reveal Himself and His will to man. The Bible is God's written revelation to man, the plenary Word of God (1 Cor. 2:7-14; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20,21). The Scriptures testify of Christ and His gospel, and it is through this revelatory testimony of the Lord Jesus that God speaks to us by His Son in these last days (Hebrews 1:1,2). ...... You don't say what the word is which you imply that the Lord has revealed to you to be communicated to your pastor. But that really isn't the chief issue. The only real issue is, DID God reveal anything to you? Obviously you have some doubts and misgivings about this matter or you wouldn't be asking for answers on this Forum. I'm quite sure that if I approached my pastor with the news that God had revealed to me a word to be delivered to him, he would, among other things, invite me to read 1 John 4:1. And rightly he should. On the other hand, if I had what I felt were legitimate councerns, and could back them up with sound scriptural doctrine, that my pastor was not preaching the word of God or was otherwise being derelict in his sheparding of his flock, and stating them as being MY concerns and not as something I had received by private revelation from God, I'm quite sure that my pastor would readily lend me his ears. ...... Revelation that God makes through His word is altogether true and absolutely trustworthy. What is "revealed" through man's feelings, hunches, dreams, and sensational "experiences" is not. ...... If you have a "word" -- whether of rebuke, reproof or exhortation -- that you have gleaned from Scripture that you feel your pastor should consider, then by all means schedule some time with him and present your case with gentleness and love. But I wouldn't go any further than that, or make any claims beyond that, unless I could prove them beyond any shadow of doubt. --Hank
654 | Such thing as a Christian Witch? | Acts 19:19 | Hank | 155812
A Christian witch? You've got to be kidding! Of course there isn't. If you have, as you say, "read all the verses" then you know full well that Scripture condemns witchcraft, sorcery and kindred abominations. ...... And you don't need to try magic "for closure." What you need to do is believe what the word of God teaches and forget your foolish notions! God has already given you "closure" on this subject if you will read and believe His word. Are you a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ? I take it that you are a young person itching to experiment, is that true? You could hardly have picked a more dangerous experiment than messing around with the dark work of Satan. Advice in a word: Don't! --Hank

658 | And if it's not | Eccl 12:7 | Hank | 155696
Russ, when I was a young man, I knew a much older man who was fond of telling of his experiences with Jesus. He never seemed to tire of it or run out of new experiences to tell. He was not only the town's most prolific "witness" of religious experiences, but near and far it was known that he was also the town drunk. For some reason, perhaps an understandable one, I have been since then more than a little skeptical of just about everybody's reports of personal experiences and private revelation. There is no personal experience that comes any where close to the power of the gospel of Christ. The most powerful witness is to share that gospel, to find a sinner willing to listen and "preach unto him Jesus" as Philip did to the eunuch in Acts 8:29-39. We let our light shine by who we are and the Christ-like lives we lead, not by pandering to our listeners' credulity by relating esoteric near-death experiences, whether real or imagined. --Hank
659 | Bondage Breaker? | Matt 7:15 | Hank | 155593
Samantha, Jesus' warning in Matthew 7:15 is, "Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves." ..... Of such is Neil T. Anderson and his cultic, unorthodox teaching. He is hung up on demon possession and exorcism through formulaic prayers. Bad stuff, rubbish, pure unbiblical nonsense. This bird even advises parents to cleanse their children's rooms of demons, because, he avers, the "monsters" that a little child fancies are under its bed are real! Balderdash! Get your information from God's word, not a quack! For more information on this charlatan go to http://www.christianarsenal.com/conttopic/ContTopics003.htm ..... Please don't waste your money or poison your mind on his books. If you haven't read "The Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan, spend your money on Bunyan instead of Anderson. In fact, you'd be far better off reading "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens. Of course, it's fiction, but then so is "Bondage Breakers," but David Copperfield is far less likely to lead you astray and is infinitely more entertaining. --Hank
