561 | Knowing God | John 15:16 | Hank | 160152
NightJay: Goodness knows that much of modern "theology" has become more of a "me-ology" in which we are told that we, like in Herrick's poem "Invictus", are masters of our fate. But this isn't what our Lord taught. In John 15:16 He said, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you." And in John 6:44, Jesus said, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him." So lest we get carried away with the man-centered idea of the power of man's "free will," let us these words of our Lord in mind. ...... With no disrespect for Rick Warren intended, I'd much prefer a "Christ-driven life" to a "Purpose-driven life" any day. --Hank
562 | Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and punishm | Matt 12:32 | Hank | 160107
Matthew 12:31,32 describes the specific sin of blasphemy against the Spirit, and Matthew 12:24-30 provides context that aids in the understanding of this particular sin and why Jesus pronounced it as unforgiveable. The unpardonable sin is ascribing to Satan the works of the Holy Spirit. See also Matthew 23:13-36 and Luke 11:52. --Hank
563 | Cains Wife | Gen 5:4 | Hank | 160104
Adam's life spanned 930 years (Gen. 5:5), "and he had sons and daughters" (Gen. 5:4). So by no means were Adam, Eve, and Cain the only persons on earth at the time that Cain acquired a wife. --Hank
564 | Apostles' Creed support the deity? | Matt 1:23 | Hank | 159835
forwwjd: Do you see anything in the Apostle's Creed that would lead anyone to believe that it does not support the deity of Jesus Christ? See other creeds of Christendom, especially the Nicene Creed, by going to http://www.creeds.net/ ..... Do YOU believe in the deity of Christ? --Hank
565 | Did Michael Shiavo Commit Adultery? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 159821

567 | Divorce, what does the bible say? | Mal 2:16 | Hank | 159380
Jaiquinn: God hates divorce. See Malachi 2:16. Please do three things ....... (1) Go to GET BIBLE TEXT on the right of this screen and type in the word, divorce. Study the passages you are directed to. ....... (2) Using SEARCH, type in the key word, divorce. This will lead you to many posts in the Forum archive which deal with divorce. ....... (3) Think long and hard before you take this giant leap that will affect your life and the life of your husband and family for the rest of your days. Reflect, pray if you are a Christian, seek wise counsel -- in short, take every step in your power to preserve your marriage. Don't be hasty and rash and don't do something foolish that you may regret the rest of your life. Rarely is divorce the best solution to marital problems. Frequently it adds to problems instead of solving them. --Hank

569 | Did Jesus speak except in parables? | Mark 4:34 | Hank | 159377
Cristine: The answer to both your questions is yes. For proof regarding the first question, read the four Gospels. For the second question read Acts, the epistles of the apostles and the Revelation. --Hank
570 | What is a Saint? | 1 Cor 1:2 | Hank | 159348
Aquadisk: In Romans 1:7 Paul wrote, "To all that be in Rome, called to be saints." This tells how they got to be saints; namely, by way of God's call (see Romans 8:30). All the redeemed in Christ are saints. It is not a title conferred by the church on or by any man. --Hank

dhobdy: If you are sufficiently familiar with Joshua 24 to know that it contains four major aspects, then perhaps you already know what they are and can tell the Forum. --Hank
572 | idle mine is thedevil work shop | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 159342
Bennett: Generally rendered, "Idle hands (not minds) are the devil's workshop," this quotation has been traced back to Chaucer who lived in the 14th century. It became associated with the philosophy of the Shakers, a religious movement in America during the 1800's. It is not a quote found in Scripture. --Hank
573 | Grateful for the forum | 1 Tim 3:4 | Hank | 159173
Dear Diomede: It's not "dumb questions" that bother me nearly so much as my fear of giving dumb answers! And I'll bet I've given more dumb answers on this Forum than anyone else. Dear heart, it is indeed delightful to learn that you are taking God's word seriously. That's wisdom! And that you are earnestly seeking to learn what it means and to apply God's truth to your life. That's also wisdom. ...... There are quite a few responsible, mature, God-fearing, born-again and knowledgeable users on this Forum. This includes CDBJ, with whom you've exchanged notes, who, if he reads this, will turn beet red at the very thought of being considered as the possessor of all those good qualities I've mentioned. :-). So he, I, and a host of other users stand at your beck and call to help you in any way we can to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Blessings to you. --Hank
574 | Luke 3:33 Genealogy quandry | Luke 3:33 | Hank | 159170
Dear Ladyborg: Certain other versions besides NASB and Amplified do include Admin in the portion of the geneology given in Luke 3:33, e.g., the English Standard Version, the New Living Translation and the Berkeley Version. There is a variance among the manuscripts of this verse, and the rendering given depends on the manuscript that the translators followed. It would be helpful to see a translators' footnote to this verse in the NASB that explained the variance. You have a keen eye for detail. That's good. Makes you a better Berean. Your discovery would have escaped my notice completely. --Hank
575 | DOES THE BIBLE TALK ABOUT DINOSAURS? | Job 1:1 | Hank | 159166
mmethOd: The Bible indeed does speak of living beings (read, for example, Genesis 1 through 3). Dinosaurs? That's problematic. The King James Bible and other translations use the word "leviathan" in Job 41:1, in Ps. 74:14 and 104:26, and in Isaiah 27:1, and some people believe that these passages refer to dinosaurs. The translators' note on Job 41:1 in the NASB gives -crocodile_ as a variant reading for _leviathan_. But there is no proof of leviathan being either a crocodile or a dinosaur, and most exegetes believe the Hebrew word rendered _leviathan_ refers to a large sea creature whose exact indentity is unknown. The one conclusion we can draw from Scripture is that if, in fact, these creatures we call dinosaurs did once exist and are now extinct, they were created during the same week that man was and did not, as certain theories would have us believe, exist millions of years and become extinct before the advent of man. --Hank
576 | what if you die and have not repented | Eph 1:7 | Hank | 159164
Dear 1SOBLESSED: The essential teaching of the New Testament is that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death on the cross and it alone has the power to save -- not works, not baptism, not repentance. His death was voluntary, vicarious, substitutionary, propitiatory and redemptive. See John 10:15; Romans 3:24,25; 1 Peter 2:24. As the old hymn faithfully says, "What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus." ---- On the basis of the efficacy of the death of Christ, the believing sinner is freed from the punishment, the penalty, the power and one day the very presence of sin. He is declared righteous, given eternal life in Christ, and adopted into the family of God. See Romans 3:25; 5:8,9; 2 Cor. 5:14,15; 1 Peter 2:24 and 3:18. --Hank

578 | Can this be related to today's world? | Acts 8:4 | Hank | 159141
reasonr: The Great Commission of our Lord (Matthew 28:19,20) is no less binding on His followers today than when it first came from the lips of Jesus. We err if we think that the call to preach the message of the Gospel of Christ applies only to the exotic far-away lands of the planet. There are literally thousands if not millions of people in the United States who know nothing about Scripture, nothing of what they must do to be saved and have no awareness even that they are lost. They have never heard a Gospel sermon in their lives, and no one has preached Christ to them. If they don't attend church services in a Bible-teaching orthodox church, and don't come from Christian families, where are they to hear the Gospel message? We have taken God and His word and prayer out of schools and public places. We live in a largely pagan society. Their exposure to televangelists by and large gives them a distorted and false picture of biblical Christianity. ..... For two millennia Christians have been persecuted on account of their faith in and allegiance to Jesus Christ. The effects of religious persecution are by no means always negative as the history of the church attests. The splitting of church bodies which you mention can be good or bad, depending on the reasons that spurred the split. --Hank
579 | Genesis 19:5-6 | Gen 19:5 | Hank | 159140
Aliennow: The facts are laid down so plainly that I really don't see that this passage, Genesis 19:1-11, needs a great deal of interpretation. Homosexuality is clearly the subject, and God's attitude toward the sin is seen in the destruction of Sodom and in Lev. 18:22,29; 20:13; Rom. 1:26; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10. It is from this passage of Scripture that we get our English word _sodomy_. ...... I don't understand your question, "I understand that the 2 people were Angels, but did Lot?" -- did Lot what? ..... By the way, angels are not people. --Hank
580 | Prophecy of Christ or Not? | Gal 3:8 | Hank | 159082
aliennow: Paul identified the words of Genesis 12:3, "in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed" as "the gospel preached to Abraham beforehand." See Galatians 3:8 and 3:16. --Hank
