1961 | Was Mark a writer or story teller | Mark 1:1 | Hank | 29742
It has been the traditional view since the days of the early church fathers that Mark (full name, John Mark) wrote the Gospel bearing his name. It is technically anonymous in that the writer does not identify himself. The same thing can be said of the other three Gospels. --Hank
1962 | Engaged and want to find a church? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 29741
If the two of you are now of the same communion and are members of different congregations within that communion, the decision should not be difficult. On the other hand, if you are members of two widely different communions, I believe it would be wise to come to agreement before you are married. It's far better to iron out conflicts of this sort now than shelve them until after the marriage ceremony. If this answer and the other answers you've received don't suffice, perhaps you might want to add a bit more detail on your situation. It's quite possible that someone on the forum has had a parallel experience and would be willing to share it with you. God bless both of you and grant you a wonderful life together. --Hank
1963 | Officer of a church worship elsewhere? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 29712
It's difficult to see how a person could perform the duties of a church officer in one congregation while attending another. --Hank

1965 | Help to pronounce word like Zabbai? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 29505
Anglo, a few editions of the Bible these days have pronunciation guides built in to the text, e.g., some in the KJV and NKJV. You can get pocket-sized pronunciation guides at Bible bookstores. They are handy to have around; I keep one on my nightstand. It keeps me from calling Ze-RUB-ba-bel Ze-ru-BUBBLE. --Hank

1967 | How does God speak to us? | Gen 1:1 | Hank | 29260
How do we know when God is speaking? By listening to what he says in His word! We learn what the truth of God is in exactly the same way the Bereans did, by searching the Scriptures (Acts 17:11). God speaks to us by His Son (Heb. 1:2) and His Son speaks to us in the Scriptures which testify of Him (John 5:39) We do not need a crystal ball or extra-biblical revelation to be able to discern between God's will and ours. The Scriptures clearly reveal God's will and plan for our lives. There is a prevalent and dangerous wind of doctrine blowing across many churches today that Scripture alone is insufficient. The heresy is being spread that we need something more -- anointing, special revelation, tongue speaking and who knows what else -- to give us a spiritual lift and jolt to make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. There is the insinuation being made that a believer who doesn't babble in a tongue or get himself "anointed" (whatever that means) is at best only a second-class Christian or at worst no Christian at all. This is raw and unwashed nonsense. We are in deep trouble indeed when we reach the point at which we think the word of God is insufficient. --Hank
1968 | Call those things that are not | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 29150
The nearest resemblance to your quote that I could find is Isaiah 43:18. If that isn't it, could you add any more detail to your question? --Hank
1969 | Church attendance not required | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 29147
Sandre, thanks for your post and I'll attempt a response to your question. You asked whether you, being a home-bound person, can still consider yourself to be a Christian without attending church regularly. If anyone is indeed a Christian, he is a Christian because Christ saved him by grace through faith, not because of the number of times he may have attended a church service. Church attendance is not salvific; the Bible never says that. If it were, it would go back to the unscriptural teaching that salvation is of works, as you refer to in your post..... God never asks us to do the impossible. Jesus never asked the lame to walk until after He had healed them. If you are home bound, you can still have fellowship with God, and I would feel, having read your post, that you surely do. May the Lord bless you richly. --Hank

1971 | matthaew 16 verse 24 | Matt 16:24 | Hank | 29099
Archsalv, hello. Man has never devised a more cruel, a more degrading, a more agonizing way to die than to die on a Roman cross. What a horrid picture Jesus' mentioning of a cross must have been invoked in the minds of his disciples. What was their Teacher saying? Was he demanding a commitment from them so strong, so total and absolute that they must be willing to die for His sake? Must their devotion to Him be such that they themselves would be willing to suffer the agony of the cross for His sake? The answer for them was Yes. And the answer for every Christian has always been Yes -- and is Yes still. (See Matt. 10:38; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23 and 14:27.) --Hank
1972 | How can you know? | Eccl 1:18 | Hank | 29061
Resurrectioner, Qohelet in Ecclesiastes 1:16 affirms that his heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge, but concludes in v. 18 that in wisdom is grief and in knowledge sorrow. These things and many others Solomon found to be vanity of vanities, all of them vanity, like chasing after the wind. The key verse of Ecclesiastes is 12:7. Having tasted of all life had to offer a man of wealth and power, for he had both, Solomon concluded "Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole (duty) of man." Adam and Eve found neither truth nor wisdom in disobeying God. They found out -- it could be said they gained the knowledge -- that "the soul who sins shall die." (Ezekiel 18:4). --Hank
1973 | How important is your Church? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 29053
Church membership and salvation are not viewed by Scripture as being two entities; they are one and the same. We can no more join a church than we can save ourselves. When a person is saved, he doesn't have an option of whether to "join" a church. God adds him to the church (Acts 2:47), the body of Christ (Eph.1:23). The church was purchased by the blood of Christ (Acts 20:28; Eph. 5:25). Every regenerate believer belongs to the body of Christ, the church. Therefore, it is totally inconsistent with Scripture for a regenerate believer to say, "I'm a Christian but I'm not a member of the church." It is impossible to rate the importance of the church in our lives without at the same time rating the importance of Christ in our lives. It is equally impossible to be saved without being a member of Christ's church. There exist today, as they have existed for some 2,000 years, groups that call themselves churches that bear little, if any, resemblance to the church that Christ died for. It is quite possible to become a member of these counterfeit organizations and not be saved. These we join on our own. God does not add us to them. They deserve to be rated "zero" on our scale of importance and avoided as the deceivers they are. --Hank
1974 | Worship and Bible Study: Can we do both? | NT general Archive 1 | Hank | 28876
HHannaJr: I've never thought of Bible study and worship and praise as being an either/or matter. Both are important and each supplements and enhances the other. Who says that one must check his brains at the door when he enters a house of worship, or that he must cease to worship and praise God when he searches the Scriptures for knowledge and wisdom? Is a concert pianist likely to be able to play the music of Chopin without first learning the music Chopin wrote? Is the pianist's performance at the keyboard made less effective by the diligent study of music? --Hank
1975 | How many children did Adam and Eve have? | Gen 1:1 | Hank | 28646

1976 | what are the requirments of the usher | 1 Timothy | Hank | 28626
In the church I attend the usher merely "ushes" -- smiles and greets people as they arrive, gives them a bulletin, and shows them to a pew. To my knowledge the Bible doesn't lay down any requirements for ushers or even mentions them by name. --Hank

1979 | My husband and I are Christians . | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 28113
The Bible "balances" many issues by condemning the extreme. For example, it clearly condemns drunkenness, gluttony, sexual misuse and perversions, gossip and falsehood; it does not condemn alcoholic beverages per se, or eating, or sex, or speech. For me, to sip a glass of wine or not to sip a glass of wine is more a matter of personal choice than religious conviction. As a Christian, I used to drink a little wine now and then, mainly on festive occasions, but no longer do. In my work with recovering alcoholics I came to see the grim and nasty side of what alcohol abuse can do. On balance, I think it wise to abstain. Having seen first-hand what abuse can do in a person's life and having shuddered at the thought, "There, but by the grace of God, go I" I must ask myself whether it is better to abstain or to take a chance on becoming addicted to alcohol. It is a sobering thought, if you will pardon the pun, to know that no alcoholic set out to become an alcoholic. They all began more or less as "social" drinkers. --Hank
1980 | Can we eat unclean foods ie pork,shrimp? | Mark 7:19 | Hank | 28105
gixer44, I sense your question as pertaining not so much to the ceremonial distinctions of the Levitical Law about which foods were clean or unclean but to the properties of the foods themselves, whether they are good or bad for us to eat. Jesus clearly abolished the proscription on ceremonially unclean foods, but He certainly did not negate the Old Testament dietary wisdom. An excellent treatment of this subject can be found in a book that I heartedly commend to you. It's called "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living" by Rex Russell, M.D. (Regal Books, a Division of Gospel Light) --Hank
