1761 | Avoiding paritality in soul care | James 2:1 | Hank | 53204
Mommapbs, yours is a thought provoking question; at least it provoked mine! In the United States there is no official caste system, yet each of us lives within a certain socio-economic biome as it were. That's our comfort zone. To move from one's own stratum, upward or downward, to another stratum is difficult for many people. Difficult, but not a valid reason or a legitimate excuse for failure to reach out with the message of the Gospel and the compassionate Christ-like love and caring for people in all walks of life. Jesus was able to minister with consummate skill to prince and pauper alike. Paul was effective in his ministry to the Athenian philosophers and to the Philippian jailer. I believe that when Christians truly are zealous about their faith, the Spirit will empower them and enable them to cross all societal boundaries and minister effectively to everyone with whom they come in contact. If every Christian alive today had half the zeal and dedication that Paul had, it would be impossible to calculate what an enormous impact it would have on our world! For far too many of us, living the Christian life means attending a church service on Sunday morning, making some effort to stay awake during the pastor's sermon, putting a few bucks in the collection plate at the close of the service, and dashing out to our cars as soon as the final "Amen" is sounded so that we can beat the Methodists and Presbyterians in the line at the cafeteria. --Hank
1762 | English Standard Version | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 53082
Parousia, the preface to the English Standard Version (ESV) calls it an "essentially literal" translation. The Revised Standard Version (RSV) -- not the New RSV -- was used as a base or starting point for the ESV and the ESV is the RSV except for revisions in about 8 per cent of the text. J.I.Packer who headed the translation committee said in a recent interview that they took the RSV and, in his words, "tightened it up." I own a copy and have discovered that it reads well; is written in excellent, standard modern English; is theologically strong..... The competition in the Bible market is fierce today. So many new versions are crying for attention, it's hard to predict which ones will eventually capture a large chunk of the market. But I would expect the ESV to find increasing favor among a broad spectrum of churches, notably among the more conservative wings of mainliners and particularly among conservative reformed churches. I think it is a fine addition to modern English translations, one of the best to come along since 1611. --Hank
1763 | is the rapture time soon? | Matt 24:36 | Hank | 53000
You asked, "Honestly from your point of view do you feel the rapture will take place soon? or in our generations time?".... My answer: I have no "point of view" beyond what the Bible says, and even if I did, it would be worthless, just as all other extra-biblical points of view on theology are worthless, whether the subject is eschatology or something else. Of Jesus' second coming, Scripture tells us two things: That it will happen (Matt.24:30; 1 Thess.4:16), but not when (Matt.24:36) --Hank
1764 | Dake's Annotated Bible | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 52964
Scribe, there's no reason to assume you want anything less than an honest answer to your question about the Annotated Dake, so here goes. There are better ways to spend money...... If there is a study (annotated) Bible that gives me everything I want to know, I've yet to find it. But some give more than others. Study Bibles fall into two rather broad categories: [1] Ones that tend to promote various doctrinal or denominational views, e.g., Baptist, Reformed, Pentecostal. [2] Ones that attempt to be of broader spectrum and to present all or most of the popularly held views on disputed passages, e.g., NASB and Nelson Study Bibles. The study Bibles in my home library, listed in no particular order, are Baptist Study Bible, NASB, Ryrie, MacArthur, KJ Study Bible, and Defender's. In addition, I have a couple of commentaries and a number of other reference works.... If this has been worth anything to you, Scribe, please send me two cents when you get around to it :-) --Hank
1765 | when baptized "in the name of jesus"? | Matt 28:19 | Hank | 52963
stebert1, the baptismal formula that is widely used is the strong affirmation of trinitarianism that Jesus himself laid down in the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19,20. --Hank
1766 | Did others exist when Cain killed Abel? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 52692
Dace, there is much, much, much material in the forum archives about Cain, his wife, and related stuff. Go to search and type in the word Cain or Cain's wife. --Hank
1767 | Can a Christian dance? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 52487
Since "can" in the question "Can a Christian dance?" refers to knowing how to or being physically able to, and encompasses no other consideration, the only correct answer to the question as it is posed must be that some can and some can't. :-) --Hank
1768 | farout to justme? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 52306
Justme, as you know by now, I've already posted to you on this user-name change with which I have not the slightest problem and feel sure that none of the other users will either. It's my sense that you made a good decision to change. I like 'justme' far better than 'farout' which was, well, a bit farout :-) --Hank
1769 | What is spiritual knocked down? | 1 Kin 8:11 | Hank | 52214
Ivory 313, what you are describing as a spiritual knock down is merely one of the more bizarre trappings staged to gain attention by the charaltans who appear with disturbing frequency at "healing" meetings and eventually worm their way into our homes via the electronic tube. One would be hard pressed indeed to justify these shenanigans by even a trace of Scripure, properly interpreted. We are commanded to do everything decently and in order. The demonstrations such as you have mentioned are neither. --Hank
1770 | is it wrong to masterbate? | 1 Cor 7:9 | Hank | 52166
Dear Charlene, you spoke of not wanting to commit a sin of omission; really, the context of your sentence calls for the word "commission." A sin of omission is failure to do something that one clearly ought to do. One of commission is doing something that the Bible proscribes (forbids, prohibits). Now we come to your question on the subject of masturbation: Is it a sin? The Bible does not speak directly on this subject. Scripture does teach that the physical act of sex is something God ordained for the marriage bed, the union of one man and one woman in holy matrimony. It speaks against pre- and extra-marital heterosexual union, homosexuality, incest, and bestiality. The purely biological function of sex is for procreation. But God also ordained that husband and wife are to become 'one flesh' and I believe that has two facets: both spiritual and physical unions that married couples achieve in the intimacy of the marriage bed. So where does self-gratification fit in God's scheme of things? That is a question for which I cannot cite a specific chapter and verse because there really is none. But looking at the overview of what the Bible sanctions as undefiled sexual activity, it is clearly limited to sex within marriage. This is as close as I can come and the best I can do to answer your question. ...... If you would like to read what some other forum members have had to say on this difficult and somewhat controversial question, please use Search and type in masturbation. You might also try typing in masterbation, since the word has been misspelled quite a number of times on the forum. God bless. --Hank
1771 | omangamobisa@yahoo.com | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 52053
Dear Omangamobisa, you are clearly correct: Christ did indeed nail our sins to the cross, metaphorically; I was thinking and writing in a literal category pertaining to the Law when I said that He didn't nail anything to the cross, but I can clearly see now that my statement could easily have been terribly misleading, for which I sincerely apologize. For a broader treatment of my efforts to correct this blunder, please see post ID #52050. Again, I'm terribly sorry for this error and I pray that this will serve to clear it up. Blessings. --Hank

My dear correspondent, omangamobisa: Please read my post again, carefully this time. I did not say any of the things that you asked me, beginning with your introductory, "Hank, are you saying...." Thanks for responding. Have a good day. --Hank
1773 | Church choirs? | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 51963
RAVEN, if you are opposed to church choirs, as I believe the Churches of Christ are, please enlighten the rest of us by showing positive proof that Scripture forbids choirs to sing praises to God. A choir is a group of people who sing. The congregation at large is also a group of people who sing. If you perceive a scripturally significant difference, will you explain what it is? And, please, don't make any more personal attacks on the author of this correspondence or on any other member of this forum. I AM a Christian, my friend, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and my hope, based solely on the saving grace of God, is to be in His presence for all eternity when my life on earth is ended. I am 67, have suffered two heart attacks, and the time may not be far off. In the meantime, I live my life keeping Christ at the center and in full control. Blessing and peace to you, Raven. --Hank
1774 | Is John the Baptist Elijah? | John 1:21 | Hank | 51798
Ivory313 -- Look at Matt. 11:14 "he is Elijah" i.e., John the Baptist is the fulfillment of Mal.4:5,6. The Jews were of course aware that Elijah had not died (2 Kings 2:11), but this does not suggest that John was in fact Elijah, for in John 1:21 he states clearly that he was not. Still and all, John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah (Luke 1:17). So the passage is saying that John came in the spirit and power of Elijah, though certainly not a reincarnation of Elijah. --Hank
1775 | What does Eph 5:17 say to you ? personal | Eph 5:17 | Hank | 51795
Lady Burnette: The NASB translates the verse adequately, it appears. I really don't believe it says anything to me 'personally' that it does not say to any other reader. The Apostle is saying to stop being foolish, (unwise, senseless) but understand (perhaps to become divinely enlightened by prayer and meditation) what the will of the Lord is. The entrace of God's word gives light and understanding. (Psalm 119:130). The key to knowing God's will is knowing God's word. What the Apostle says here in this verse is not unlike what he said to Timothy: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim.2:15) or what the Psalmist said in 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." --Hank
1776 | where are we in Bible prophecy? | Revelation | Hank | 51775
Andrew, if you mean where are we chronologically, we are in the 'last days' or 'end times' and that is the period between the first and second Advents of our Lord. We know that we are some 2,000 years away from the first; we do not know how long we are from the second. It could be one minute or one millenium, more or less. --Hank
1777 | Was Eve the first female | Genesis | Hank | 51773
Winfieldd -- Yes, Eve was the first woman and Adam the first man, the first and only two human beings that God ever created according to the Genesis record: we have no evidence that He created any other human beings. The rest of the human race are descendents from Adam and Eve, born of their seed and not created in the sense that Adam and Eve were. Your confusion obviously stems from your assuming that Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are describing two accounts of creation, but they are not. The second account is merely an expansion of the first. One God, one creation. Many posts are in the forum archives on this topic and may be accessed by using Search and the key words _creation account_ --Hank
1778 | Are we ever "worthy" of God's love? | John 3:16 | Hank | 51723
KAS, God loves us (John 3:16), but that does not mean that we are worthy but that He is gracious. --Hank
1779 | Will Christ be coming back very soon? | Rev 22:20 | Hank | 51721
Andrew, of that day and hour no one knows but God [Matt.24:36] It COULD be within the next couple of years of course, as your full question asks, or in the next couple of minutes, or in a couple of thousand years. One guess is as good as another -- and we are deceived if we believe anyone who claims to know...... Out of curiosity, why did you set a possible time frame of "within the next couple of years"? The New Testament speaks of our time as the 'last days,' but that covers the entire Christian era, from the first Advent of Christ to the second. No specific measure of time is given, i.e., the Bible is silent on exactly how long the 'last days' will last until Christ returns, but it is clear in its teaching that He will return. --Hank
1780 | Hebrew Scholar needed! | Bible general Archive 1 | Hank | 51583
Mommapbs, out of the largess of my Arkansas heart, I'll be glad to give you my usual dazzling but less-than-brilliant and not-ready-for-prime time exegesis of the so-called two accounts of creation. The two accounts theory is wrong in my humble [but correct!] opinion..... God got everything right the first time around.... If you will be so kind, please place ID #48211 in the little box and give the enter key a gentle goose and presto! you will be ushered into the hushed presence of my post on the subject...... And by the way, the guy whom Norrie reported as believing that God later made a few animals just for Adam's amusement must indeed have a wry sense of humor; surely he can't be serious! But, come to think of it, we read from time to time some stuff on this forum that is no less nutty than this, don't we?.... I do hope you find my little essay on the creation account to be of some small help to you, Mommapbs. --Hank
