Hi, Deborah... That is a wonderful Biblical name, isn't it? I believe it means bee -- if memory serves. This might help: "God, in His ordinary providence makes use of means (Acts 27:31,44; Isaiah 55:10-11), yet [He] is free to work without (Hosea 1:7), above (Romans 4:19-21), and against them (Daniel 3:27) at His pleasure." (1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, Chapter 5, Paragraph 3) No doubt as God works out His eternal purpose (Ephesians 1:11), the way in which He works will bring Him greater glory. In addition, what a blessing that He would use men at all? In Him, Doc |

Hi, goodguy... Welcome to the forum! If you use the search function to the right of your screen, you will find that this topic has been much discussed over the years. I expect that anything that can be reasonably said about the topic, and a lot that is distinctively lacking reason, has been posted in the forum in the last ten years. In Him, Doc |

523 | Three Days and Three Nights | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234213
Hi, rstrats... Welcome to the forum! I believe you mean practice rather than idiom. Yes, the Hebrews would include the first thing in a series as one, the second as two, etc. If they said, "two days hence" that would be what you and I would call tomorrow. The Greek and Roman practice would be to skip the current day as we do today: "two days hence" would mean the day after tomorrow. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Rstrats... Only insofar as I have seen it harmonized in various lectures. I never found it particularly problematic or sufficiently intriguing to persue it very far. In my experience, the issue is primarily used as a hook to draw people into a questionable hermeneutic; e.g., Russellites use this approach, etc. In Him, Doc |

527 | where does it say we have to chosen min. | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234432
Dear Larry, If you mean ministry in general, then that is an obligation of every member of the church (Gal 6:2). Every member ought to minister to every other member of the church. If you mean ministry in the sense of a position of authority in the local congregation: Christ is the Head of the church (Col 1:18). The Lord does the calling (Mat 28:18-20). He fully equips the congregation to carry out the proper order of worship and discipline (1 Cor 5:4-5). Their job is to recognize His calling out of a particular person (Acts 14:23; 1 Timothy 4:14; Acts 6:3, 5, 6), which thing appears to be normative in scripture by the common suffrage (i.e., voting) of the church. 528 | what is the truth about the rapture? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234537
Hi, betote... Welcome to the forum! The truth about the rapture is that it is a doctrine held by many American evangelicals. It is rooted in a hermeneutic known as dispensationalism -- particularly made popular by the Scofield reference notes extensively available in bibles published in the early twentieth century. Hi, Dunneileene... Welcome to the forum! One would assume that the Roman church still holds to the sinful nature of homosexuality as expressed in the Bible. You might want to check with their last confession published, I believe, in 1995. In Him, Doc |

530 | Best time for devotional? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234575
Hi, mr... The old Puritans used to talk about discursive meditation. The idea was to have your mind in a continuous state of prayer to the Lord, and preaching the Word to yourself. Devotion is a continuous process. That said, I supppose you might mean what people used to call "personal devotion" -- from my perspective, that's a bit on the pietistic side of things -- do you mean a time of private prayer and Bible study? Or do you mean a time of family prayer and Bible study? There is nothing magical about what time of day we do things. Knowing your own proclivities, strengths, weaknesses, etc. should suffice in your choosing a time of day for a formalized practice of these things. What brings God the most glory? What cultivates progressive sanctification the best for you, your family, etc.? We are individuals, and, as such, will find the need for differing approaches. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Keith... If you are going to do that, then you probably don't want to use the modern alphabet. You should use Hebrew. Come to that, you shouldn't type it or convey it any other way than in hand script. Why not found a society for serious Bible study, teaching what the Holy Spirit has been instructing peoples through time in the Word? It can be done! In Him, Doc |

535 | dealing with divorce | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234836
Hi, humblecross... Welcome to the forum! I would suggest that you turn your focus away from dealing with your problems, to your walk with the Savior. I do not mean to minimize what you are going through at all. However, if you see the Lord as a solution to your problems, rather than your King and Master, your faith will be shallow indeed. We got to where we are day by day, step by step, decision by decision. We got there by serving ourselves. Your life in Christ will be an utterly superior way to live in every way, but you must understand that He does not grant salvation in order to make your life easier. He grants it in order that He may be served and glorified as our holy Father. Focus on knowing Him. The best way to do that is to study what He has revealed about Himself through the Word. That is the only certain, necessary, and sufficient way to know Him. Meanwhile, be assured that everyone who reads this forum can sympathize with your circumstances and your hurts. Many will be praying for you! Perhaps one of the free tutorials at http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/ might be of benefit to you. In Him, Doc |

536 | Where did God and Jesus come from? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234855
Hi, Cody... God is the creator of all things (Acts 17:24). He has no origin, nor is His existence dependent on anything. As Athanasius put it in the third century, “There never was when He was not.” Sometimes He is referred to as the “Causeless Cause.” We know about God because He has revealed Himself to us (Hebrews 1:1-2). He alone is to be worshiped and loved (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Isaiah 44:6-45:25 ). God is a Triunity of three Persons (called the Trinity): The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are coequal and coeternal. You will find a wonderful statement of what the Bible reveals about God in the Nicene Creed. This is a statement with which all Christendom agrees. (You will see it referred to in the Terms of Use of the forum.) See http://www.reformed.org/documents/nicene.html Jesus was the incarnation of the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary. Another consensus in Christianity is the Definition of Calcedon. See http://www.reformed.org/documents/chalcedon.html Here is a very helpful outline that explains the Biblical basis for the doctrine of the Trinity: http://www.equip.org/articles/the-biblical-basis-of-the-doctrine-of-the-trinity/ In Him, Doc |
