4681 | Is it ok to wear Jewelry? | 1 Pet 3:4 | DocTrinsograce | 236934
Hello, K... Welcome to the forum! I would say that if the adorning of the external exceeds that of the internal, then there is a serious problem. "Your adornment must not be merely external --braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God." 4682 | Apology in Acts 2? | 1 Pet 3:15 | DocTrinsograce | 157517
Hi, Scarlette... An apology in theological and philosophical terms is not an "I am sorry." :-) It is a carefully reasoned explanation. I believe the dictionary uses the definition "A formal explanation or defense." Sorry for being unclear. In a very real sense, the four gospels are evangelistic and apologetic in nature. 4683 | Witnessing | 1 Pet 3:15 | DocTrinsograce | 173533
Dear Bliss, There's no magic formula in witnessing. God hasn't called us to formulas, methods, and techniques. The Holy Spirit operates uniquely in every person. There was a day when you could present the Gospel from the Word of God and people would respond to its authority. Most folks today are influenced strongly by post-modernism. Consequently they are reached much more effectively through relationship. Prayer, Bible Study, and full submission to the Lord will equip you with what is necessary to give an answer to every man. In Him, Doc "Forcing tactics can only do damage, perhaps incalculable damage, to men's souls... Evangelism must rather be conceived as a long-term enterprise of patient teaching and instruction, in which God's servants seek simply to be faithful in delivering the gospel message and applying it to human lives, and leave it to God's Spirit to draw men to faith through this message in his own way and at his own speed." --James I. Packer "We must recognize the different types of persons, and we must learn to discriminate between them. There is nothing so pathetic or so unscriptural as a mechanical way of testifying to others. There are some Christians who are guilty of that. They witness and testify, but they do it in a thoroughly mechanical way. They never really consider the person with whom they are dealing; they never try to assess the person, or to discover exactly what his position is. They fail completely to implement this exhortation. They present the truth in exactly the same way to all and sundry. Quite apart from the fact that their testifying is generally quite useless, and that the only thing they achieve is a great feeling of self-righteousness, it is utterly unscriptural." --Martyn Lloyd-Jones |

4684 | What is the meaning of this verse and ho | 1 Pet 3:15 | DocTrinsograce | 201864
Hi, Mike... Welcome to the forum! It means to honor and glorify the holy character of the Lord, as fitting of the dwelling place of His Spirit. We are to be prepared at any given time to give a reasonable explanation of basis of our faith to those who make honest inquiry. The word "profane" literally means "before the temple." In ancient times the marketplace, the area in which a city transacted commerce, was almost always in front of the temple to the local patron deities. John Calvin used to say that Christians were to be profane. It sounds peculiar to us given the meaning of the word today. However, Calvin was using the old, literal meaning. We are to live our faith in the marketplace rather than cloistered away in the temple. In Him, Doc |

4685 | People who speak bad of others | 1 Pet 3:16 | DocTrinsograce | 177803
Hi, Tlcequine... If it is untrue, they shall be ashamed. If it is true, one should amend his ways. Either way... always remember, if they knew you as well as God knows you, they could always say much worse things! :-) Consequently, we can pray that God would show them the same mercy He has shown us. 4687 | Where was Jesus during death? | 1 Pet 3:19 | DocTrinsograce | 175149
Dear 6bunkins, The Bible is not clear as to Christ's location or activity during this time. Some hold to 1 Peter 3:18-19 as indicating that Christ was in the realm of the dead. I don't find this view very well substantiated. The word "prison" is quite probably figurative. In Him, Doc |

4691 | baptism and the appeal to God | 1 Pet 3:21 | DocTrinsograce | 142092
I'd tend to agree with you. Clearly Peter cannot be thinking something far different from what Paul said in Romans 6:4 (scripture explains scripture). But it is interesting to contrast and compare the salvation of Noah in the ark with the salvation that we enjoy. It appears that that is the comparison (or type) that Peter is talking about here. In Him, Doc PS How are we to "shoot an e-mail" off to you (in your profile) if you don't have your e-mail address there? :-) |

4693 | Traditional answer? | 1 Pet 4:6 | DocTrinsograce | 131574
There is a doctrine that goes pretty far back in church history that states that Christ actually descended into "the outer darkness" or "prison" to declare His victory over sin. This is explicitly stated in the Apostles Creed. (I do not necessarily hold to this view myself, but you asked for the orthodox interpretation.) There is a very scholarly and Biblical discussion of this by John Calvin in his Institutes. He talks there about all the various views on this specific topic. You can read it at: http://www.reformed.org/documents/Christ_in_hell/ Check out his arguments and the scripture he cites and form your own opinion. Its interesting reading! :-) |

4694 | another question about Jesus in the grav | 1 Pet 4:6 | DocTrinsograce | 240810
Hi, Anita... Thank you for the encouragement. Allow me to encourage you in turn for continuing to seek answers in the Word of God. Do not be too concerned about telling your friend that you do not have a clear answer. This question has been extensively studied by Christians since the earliest days of the church. Consequently, it wouldn't be too surprising if people like you and me struggle to explain. By the way, this topic is a category of Scripture that theologians call "hard sayings of the Apostles." Believers have always recognized that some things in the Bible are simply a struggle to understand. God says in Deuteronomy 29:29a, "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever." It is far more important for us to deal with the things in the Bible that we do understand than it is to deal with the things that we do not. Nevertheless, here are some sources that you might find helpful. This one gives a short but fairly clear summary of the various perspectives, some of them you may have noticed being expressed by other members of the forum. In addition, it cites more Scripture passages for your consideration. http://www.creeds.net/ancient/descendit.htm Here is another summary that is more detailed, but fairly easy to read: http://www.ligonier.org/learn/devotionals/christs-descent-into-hell/ This one will take more effort to read, but it will provide you with a more detailed discussion: http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/christdecended.html Those of us in the forum will be praying for you as you study. God bless you as you seek to know His Word. In Him, Doc |

Dear cuhigher, You've been a forum member for over a year, and this is the first you've posted! I couldn't have welcomed you back in October, but I welcome you now! I think your question is a very good one! What a mess we've made by thinking that truth and love are mutually exclusive. Most of what we see exhibited by people in American popular Christendom is simply the thinly disguised values of the world. They praise amicability as the greatest of virtues. They think that to be Spirit led means being happy-go-lucky, pie-in-the-sky, sickly sweet, and eternally cheerful. They know nothing of the struggle to mortify the flesh (Romans 8:13), or to seize the kingdom of heaven by violence (Matthew 11:12). I could go on and on... One thing that helps me is to recognize that God is never honored, nor is a brother ever helped, if a sin is allowed to continue unchecked. Indeed, we show no love for the Lord or for our brethren when we close our eyes to habitual sin. Hence we have some careful instruction from Paul (e.g., Galatians 6:1-4; Romans 14; 1 Corinthians 8:7-13; etc.) On the other hand, Peter is trying to tell us to leave the past behind. Paul says something similar in Philippians 3:13-14. We don't hold a higher standard than God does! We accomplish little by reminding a person continuously of their past failings. After all, a believer's perseverance isn't proven by the good behavior of the past. Nor are the sins of the past the determining factor of a believer's ultimate destiny. What matters... what is really important... is living out our faith today. That should be the focus of our lives, and our expectation of our brethren. That is what shows God's transforming power, how we are living right now. Nevertheless, always remember that truth divides. It divides the sheep from the goats, the wheat from the tares, the elect from the reprobate. Christ made no bones about this truth (Matthew 10:34-37). But truth is always an integral part of love. Thank you for your question. I hope, rather than just ranting, I've written something helpful. In Him, Doc |

Dear jclark, Good question! On what basis might we deem that Satan can no longer enter the courts of heaven? (I've never quite understood why he'd want to go there, given who he is and what motivates him.) Satan is not yet bound in the Lake of Fire. In Him, Doc |
