4461 | Did I commit adultery? | Titus | DocTrinsograce | 203080
Hi, smallflower... Not everything that is unwise is sinful. I think, in general, men more easily become physically unfaithful and women more easily become emotionally unfaithful. The fact that you are troubled by this relationship is probably an indication of your need to decisively resolve the issue. Even your evaluation of it in your very first post revealed that you were already thinking it through properly. One thing that might clarify things very well for you is to consider: What if all of the interactions, all of your feelings, and all of your attitudes were fully disclosed to your spouses and to your churches? What kind of feelings does that stir in you? Sin always begins in the darkness, but exposed to the full light of day, it whithers and dies. As believers we are creatures of the day, not of the night. Here is something that I wish I had understood years ago: Character is much more easily retained than it is recovered. In Him, Doc |

4462 | Eternal life promised by God? | Titus 1:2 | DocTrinsograce | 217647
Dia duit, David... Eternal life is discussed in the Old Testament in a number of places -- although it is not a doctrine that is commonly shared by all Jewish peoples. (Of course, if you find any two of us, you will find at least three or more opinions!) Nonetheless, probably the earliest reference is Job 19:25-27. However, one might construe from Genesis 2:9 and 3:22 that there is indirect evidence of it being an understood aspect of human existence. (You might be interested in post #213874 discussing the "interim state.") Of course, we see a reference to it by the Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17) and a lawyer (Luke 10:25). You can find God's promises regarding the concept of eternal life in places like Daniel 12:2; Isaiah 26:19; 66:24; Ezekiel 37:1-4, 12; and probably others. In Him, Doc PS You might be interested be interested in Josephus' Discourse to the Greeks Concerning Hades: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2847 It might give you a Jewish perspective on life after death from around the time of Christ. As always, though, I recommend to folks that they take such writings with a grain of kosher salt. :-) Remember, such things do not have the authority of Scripture. |

4463 | doctrin, what is true doctrin | Titus 1:9 | DocTrinsograce | 131425
Notice that in this verse Paul instructs Titus to use sound doctrine to exhort and convince. Titus was encouraged to build this sound doctrine from the Word, as he had been taught himself. The word doctrine is translated from the Greek word "didaskalaia" which means teachings. The word sound is translated from the Greek word "hugiaino" which means solid, whole, healthy, complete. Thus, true doctrine is only founded in the Word of God... and it must be the complete, unaltered Word of God. |

4464 | Emergent Church question | Titus 1:9 | DocTrinsograce | 177169
Dear MJH, I am not certain that one can discuss the "Emergent Church" movement without discussing post-modernism. I'd say that there are some good things going on in the hearts and minds of those who are seeking a relevant expression of theology -- although post-moderns wouldn't like the term. Of course, a search for relevance is simply a point of contact with people. The question of relevance really only surfaces among those who are pretty ignorant of Scripture, the redemptive plan of God in history, or even fairly simple philosophy -- please understand that I don't say that in a derogatory tone. However, nothing is more relevant than the Creator speaking to His creation! I'd posit that the subject is far too broad to be dealt with in a forum of this type. I can understand your concern over some of the language people are using. You can find it on both sides of the fence. The following link will provide a series of articles and links that you might find useful. Interestingly enough, it really isn't anything new. The Word is always contends with the philosophy, presuppositions, and world-view of the current culture where ever and when ever it is presented. That's why Augustine, for example, wrote "The City of God" some 1500 years ago. :-) http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/topic/emergingchurch.html God bless you in your study! In Him, Doc |

4466 | Can a pastor be relieved of his duties | Titus 1:11 | DocTrinsograce | 148431
Dear TKK, There are Biblical grounds for his never having become a pastor in the first place. However, as to whether he can be relieved would depend on your particular denomination. You will have to inquire there. It is probably documented in a church constitution (often such constitutions are required by local laws in order for the church to retain tax exempt status). However, some churches have allowed demagoging to occur. It just depends. I'd be real sure of your facts, however, proceeding. Rebellion is a very sobering thing to consider. In Him, Doc |

4469 | hugging in church wrong? | Titus 1:15 | DocTrinsograce | 168359
Hi, Blueangel... There is no such passage in Scripture. Indeed, we are to greet one another warmly (2 Corinthians 13:12). However, we are called to be pure (Hebrews 10:22) and to abstain from even the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). We are also called to avoid those things that might cause us to fall (Romans 13:14). So don't begrudge someone who is uncomfortable with hugging. It isn't necessarily an indication of lack of love for the brethren. Indeed, it might be an indication of a person seeking to please his Lord. In Him, Doc |

4472 | Can a pastor be asked to explain sermon | Titus 2:1 | DocTrinsograce | 166043
Dear Bereaniam, A couple of suggestions: Perhaps your pastor is overworked. When you have a questino, seek the explanation from another elder, if you are a man, or from your husband, if you are a woman, or from an older woman, if you are a single woman. Pray for your pastor. If he is suffering from spiritual pride, it is very sad. Pray that God will deal with him in a merciful fashion. Search your own heart for any kind of pride. I know that in my own case if someone seems to snub me, I resent it. Which simply indicates that I'm thinking more highly of myself than I ought. (The greatest idol we ever have is our self!) If you sense that in yourself, then you can have even more compassion on your pastor as you pray that God mercifully deals with your idol. In Him, Doc |

4473 | could someone explain titus chapter 2 | Titus 2:1 | DocTrinsograce | 168357
Dear Sug557, Sound doctrine requires certain behaviors of those who are of the faith, depending on their maturity and position. The reality within will always manifest itself with observable behavior. Christians are called to be busy with the doing of good works. Regarding your specific question concerning chapter 2 of Titus, here's a summary: 1. Older men to be sober, sound in faith, in patience (v2) 2. Older women, sound in holy behavior, teaching good things (v3) 3. Young women to be taught to be sober and sound in action, to love their families (v4-5) 4. Young men to be exhorted to be sober minded (v6) 5. Slaves to be taught to be obedient, industrious, and honest (v9) 6. All should be sincere in every action, showing sound character (v7-8) (Note that Paul does not tell Titus to teach the younger women.) You might want to work through each of the attributes for each person. I only summarized them above. I'd urge you to take into account the entire epistle. There is a tendency in our study of the Bible to treat it like an encyclopedia -- where we try to find a passage that deals with a specific topic and ignore the passages to either side. Scripture is structured the way it is by specific design of God. In Him, Doc |

4474 | What are the roles of women in the churc | Titus 2:3 | DocTrinsograce | 237289
Dear Tine, Welcome to the forum! Women have a difficult and important job to do in the church. Marriage is a picture to the world of Christ and his bride (Ephesians 5). Woman must make a concerted effort to be in concert with how this picture is modeled to the world. Consequently, we have passages like Titus 3:3-5. Read that passage and see the various attributes that believing women are to have. Notice that the older women are to instruct the younger women in these virtues, and that the younger women are to be responsible pupils to the older women. Most of all, note that a failure by women in these areas brings about the dishonoring of God Himself. There are other passages that speak to what women should do and be. What a blessing that they are spelled out so clearly! See for example Proberbs 31 and 1 Corinthians 7. God is not just clear what His commands are, but He also grants grace -- amazing grace! -- for a woman to walk out His design for their lives. In Him, Doc |

4475 | What roles can a married woman be in chu | Titus 2:4 | DocTrinsograce | 160777
Hi, Sallie... Scripture authorizes older women to teach the younger women sobriety, love of husbands, love of children, discretion, chastity, domestic responsibilities, and obedience to their husbands. Paul states that the absence of these things causes the Gospel to be spoken of in an ill manner among the lost. By implication, the younger women should be employed in the mastering of these virtues. 4476 | Household | Titus 2:4 | DocTrinsograce | 160867
Dear Jayell, The Bible does not offer explicit direction in that area. However, Paul in his epistle to Titus wrote, "aged women likewise in reverent behavior, not slanderers, not being enslaved by much wine, teachers of good, that they might train the young women to be lovers of husbands, lovers of children, discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, subject to their own husbands, so that the Word of God may not be blasphemed," (Titus 2:3-5) The question ought to be: Are these principles more easily accomplished with the wife staying at home while the man goes to work? Each couple will need to answer that for themselves. In Him, Doc |

4477 | respond asap part B | Titus 2:4 | DocTrinsograce | 161381
Dear Devon, Why depend so heavily on weak argument, when we have explicit texts that tell quite clearly what we are each required to do? The tasks of women are incredibly important to the church. If those tasks are neglected, the consequences will be dire for everyone. The precious women laboring in the background to be holy, chaste, keepers of the home, enabling and encouraging their men folk, are going to be far greater heros in heaven than those who neglect these tasks, taking on roles for which they were never intended. Their reward will exceed that of the greatest male orator in the church. In Him, Doc |

4478 | How do I submit and not lose my self. | Titus 2:4 | DocTrinsograce | 168223
Dear Browngirl, The forum is not really intended to be a place where counsel is to be sought or received. We encourage you to seek direction from your pastor and elders. Indeed, you should find a Godly older woman to instruct you in your new life as a wife. God brings a variety of forces to bear in our lives so that we will not trust ourselves, but will trust in Him (2 Corinthians 1:9). Your husband belongs to God and is accountable to Him. God is fully able to direct his heart as He sees fit (Proverbs 21:1). Your purpose in life is bring glory to God in a life of service to Him and your family. If you focus on eliminating the idols of your own heart, the issues that others have around you will grow insignificant. Furthermore, you will be in a greater position to minister the grace that God has given you when the time is right. There are two books that I would recommend to you: "The Excellent Wife" by Martha Peace, and "Let me be a Woman" by Elizabeth Elliot. Both of these women offer soundly Biblical advice regarding the task that is ahead of you. I'd also suggest that you begin to praise God and thank Him that your husband is a believer seeking to serve the Lord. In Him, Doc |

4479 | What does God say about being a mother? | Titus 2:4 | DocTrinsograce | 200648
Hi, aspisak77... Welcome to the forum! That is a very good topic of study. In the second chapter of Titus -- one of the pastoral epistles -- Paul states, "Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled." (Titus 2:3-5 ESV) Huge amount of research material here. Note the "likewise" which indicates that there is more stuff in the preceding verses. I also noted that some book recommendations here: http://pilgrimsprogress.net/resources/godly-womanhood/ But to save money, here's a wonderful book that is online! http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/cbmw/rbmw/index.html Here's another website that you will find helpful, "The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood." http://www.cbmw.org/ As believers read this post, we'll be praying for you and your Bible study. God bless you! In Him, Doc |
