282 | Cultural, Evangelistic, Dominion Mandate | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 203862
Hi, Tamara... Reformed and evangelistic are not mutually exclusive! Oh my, no! These terms are simply used in theology to discuss the explicit commands of God to man. They tend to be mentioned in more educated circles, which is why you generally don't hear them from contemporary evangelical pulpits. One of the best treatments of these mandates that I have heard was by Dr. Gerard Van Groningen. I'll send you a link to his lectures if you'd like. In Him, Doc |

283 | Did I miss something in the text? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 203864
Hi, Tamara... Christ, is, indeed, on every page of Scripture. He is the Word incarnate! I've not heard that particular spin on the Tower of Babel. Josephus continues with "they built a tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about the work: and, by reason of the multitude of hands employed in it, it grew very high, sooner than any one could expect; but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built, that thereby its great height seemed, upon the view, to be less than it really was. It was built of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar, made of bitumen, that it might not be liable to admit water." In other words, they built this tall, water-proof tower as a place to flee, if God should bring judgment upon them as He had done in the deluge. Isn't that so like man? We tend to think so highly of ourselves that we even imagine we can thwart the hand of God! How childish we are! I've got to hit the sack, I'm afraid... but if you look up John Piper's sermon on the Tower of Babel (www.desiringgod.org), I think you will find it a blessing... and you'll see how Christ fits into the picture, too! In Him, Doc "On every page of the Bible I behold nothing but the cross, and its amazing retinue of suffering and glory. For me, patriarch and prophet and apostle all utter one voice, all point to Calvary, and cry, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! As a minister, as a sinner, I have no theme, no hope, but Christ Jesus and Him crucified. On Him and Him alone, on the redundant merit of His atonement, my soul leans with a recumbency, a confidence, a delight unspeakable and full of glory." --Richard Fuller |

Dear joann55, Perhaps it is an error in the teaching of those who have told you that you need to speak in tongues. I think God may be keeping you from entering into a practice that might well be self deceiving. In Him, Doc |

Hi, VPaine93... Welcome to the forum! God is perfect in every way. He does not need anything from His creation. He did not create because there was anything lacking in Him. Consequently, He can derive absolutely no benefit from us, nor can we cause Him any loss. Instead of leading people to with prepared questions, why not do a Biblical study of the attributes of God? On the other hand, that would require a great deal of advanced preparation. Have you thought of using a catechism? For example, the Heidelberg Catechism or the Westminster Shorter Catechism? They were originally written for children -- and are used in many churches today for children -- but I'm sure they would be a challenge and a benefit to these young people. In Him, Doc |

Hi, ardmore... Part of it is, of course, a matter of loving the word, reading the word, and memorizing the word. The following diagrams might help: http://bible.ort.org/books/gened2.asp Also, at www.supermemo.com is a cool piece of software to help with memory. In Him, Doc |

289 | is caron 14 completly accurate? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 205360
Hi, Neil... Welcome to the forum! Carbon 14 dating has been thoroughly tested by checking organic things whose age is known. However, the key is that it is only useful on organic things. Consequently, it cannot measure the age of fossils. That's a bit out of the scope of Bible study. Might I suggest that you look at this web site: http://www.reasons.org/ You'll find a lot of good stuff there, written by Scientists who are believers. In Him, Doc |

291 | Can Christian teach unsaved about ghost? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 205704
Dear Praidup, I think you're barking up the wrong tree. We all do it from time to time. People have all sorts of problems. They state them in various ways. They even think that if they could get one particular problem or another solved, everything would be fine from then on in. Of course, we know that your co-worker and her family have just one huge problem: they've offended a just and holy God and continue in every way to offend Him. Unless they find a solution to that issue, no other solutions will matter. So what I'm suggesting is this: Don't get distracted by their stated issues. Keep pointing to the cross. They need to understand that they are doomed sinners. Then, and only then, can the balm of the Gospel -- the good news -- be applied. In Him, Doc PS I think our Brother Steve made a very good point, too. |

Dear Immanuelsown, Yes, threads do get messy at times. We try to keep them focused, but answers give rise to more questions. If you hang around you will come to understand our conventions... for good or ill. :-) Yes, you can answer an old question, but some of those old threads don't really warrant reanimation! :-) In Him, Doc |

293 | Is limited atonement needed in Calvinism | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 206131
Hi, ahchoo4u... Welcome to the forum! I prefer the title of "particular redemption." God's justice must be satisfied. Either Christ pays the debt, or we pay the debt. The debt never gets doubly paid. Christ's sacrifice assures the redemption of the elect. The doctrines of grace are logically interconnected, reflecting the Scripture's full teaching of redemption. They do not stand as individual doctrines. Like a pentagon, eliminating one of the sides causes it to cease to be a pentagon. In Him, Doc |

294 | Honoring your Father | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 206435
Hi, Krystyk... No, the Scripture doesn't speak to this question. The Western practice of the daughter being "given away" by her father was fashioned over the years by Christians providing a picture of Christ and the church. The officiating pastor or priest represents the God the Father, the groom represents God the Son, the father of the bride represents the drawing Holy Spirit, and the bride represents the church (God's "called out" ones). Hi, justme... I don't know about the rightness of Olson's definition of the gospel, but his theology misses the mark. Read about what the old divines called "secondary causes." See posts #151282, #166824, and #198348. "How frequently God’s saints see only Satan as the cause of their troubles. They regard the great enemy as responsible for much of their sufferings. But there is no comfort for the heart in this. We do not deny that the Devil does bring about much that harasses us. But above Satan is the Lord Almighty! The Devil cannot touch a hair of our heads without God’s permission, and when he is allowed to disturb and distract us, even then it is only God using him to 'try' us. Let us learn then, to look beyond all secondary causes and instruments to that One who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will (Ephesians 1:11). This is what Job did." --A. W. 300 | when you die. when do you go to heaven | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 207107
Hi, ljcarr... Welcome to the forum! Theologians call the period of time after death and before resurrection as the "interim state." "The bodies of men after death return to dust, and see corruption; but their souls, which neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them. The souls of the righteous being then made perfect in holiness, are received into paradise, where they are with Christ, and behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies; and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell; where they remain in torment and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day; besides these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none. (Genesis 3:19; Acts 13:36; Ecclesiastes 12:7; Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 5:1, 6,8; Philippians 1:23; Hebrews 12:23; Jude 6, 7; 1 Peter 3:19; Luke 16:23, 24)" --1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (chapter 31, paragraph 1) Note that the interim state is an abnormal state. Men were not meant to be beings separate from bodies. Nor were men meant to dwell eternally in heaven. After glorification, when God restores His creation, men will again dwell upon the earth in the state for which they were created. In Him, Doc |
