285 | "a wheel within a wheel" | Ezek 1:16 | DocTrinsograce | 240842
Hi, Judy... The phrase is used twice in the Scriptures: Ezekiel 1:16; 10:10. John Calvin wrote the following: "God therefore, whilst He turns round the world, preserves an even course with respect to Himself, so that what we call changes or revolutions have no inequality with respect to Himself, but each is in harmony with all the others. At length He adds, their aspect and workmanship, or form, was as if each wheel were in the midst of a wheel, so that the bending of one wheel is across that of another. For he does not mean to say, that one wheel was greater and another less, but that two wheels were so united that they were at right angles to each other. Now, we may see why the wheels were double; viz., because God does not seem to hold on a direct course, but to have various changes, and, as it were, in contrary directions, as if the motion by which each creature is inspired with vigor was drawn in different ways. Therefore it is said, one wheel was in the middle, of another Finally, here God represents to us to the life what experience teaches. For first, the world is carried, along just as the wheels run round, and that, too, not simply but with such great variety that God seems to send forth his impelling force, now to the right hand and now to the left. This, then, is as if two wheels were entangled together." In Him, Doc |

286 | false prophets and false teachings. | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 240838
Hi, Vonray... Welcome to the forum! I am glad that you are turning to the Scriptures themselves, rather then some kind of inner feelings. We are to stand firmly on the solid rock of the Word. Otherwise you might well be suffering a maladay not much different than your brother-in-law. Indeed, work to increase your own understanding of Scriptures. Do not try to deal with this other man's perceived problem. You already have something in common in the Word itself. As you grow in love of God, love of His Word, love of His church, and love of His righteousness (1 John), the Lord will provide opportunities for you to interact with your brother-in-law. There are far more points of commonality than this single issue. No doubt God is working in him as well. Why not take an epistle like 1 John and become an expert on it? This will allow the Lord to begin to build the kind of character in you that will be able to lovingly help your brother. Meanwhile, those of us in the forum, will be praying for you and your brother-in-law. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Kathy... We serve a God whose resources include all the universe and all that it is in it. We are told that His provision will not be withheld from His own (Psalm 84:11), right up to and including His Son (2 Corinthians 5:21). Nonetheless, our Lord has been pleased to give you a station in life that is a very humble one. Scripture tells us that the poor believer is far more wealthy in eternal blessing than the richest person in the world. The poor person is to rejoice in their humble circumstances (James 1:9). Your question seems to focus on how to make others change their condescension. However, just as we shall always have the poor with us (Matthew 26:11), we will always have thr proud. The key is not to work to change them -- that is God's business -- but rather to use your circumstances to change yourself, with God's power, to get the most out of the low station in which He has placed you. It has been my experience that true humility never arises in us without humiliation. After all, it is the same sort of pride in us that makes us turn our eyes to the sin of others, rather than to be focused on the sin of ourselves. The proud are actively resisted by God (James 4:6) -- what a scary thought! Nevertheless, He gives greater grace to the humble (cf Matthew 23:12). Let us diligently seek to be found among the humble! 292 | another question about Jesus in the grav | 1 Pet 4:6 | DocTrinsograce | 240810
Hi, Anita... Thank you for the encouragement. Allow me to encourage you in turn for continuing to seek answers in the Word of God. Do not be too concerned about telling your friend that you do not have a clear answer. This question has been extensively studied by Christians since the earliest days of the church. Consequently, it wouldn't be too surprising if people like you and me struggle to explain. By the way, this topic is a category of Scripture that theologians call "hard sayings of the Apostles." Believers have always recognized that some things in the Bible are simply a struggle to understand. God says in Deuteronomy 29:29a, "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever." It is far more important for us to deal with the things in the Bible that we do understand than it is to deal with the things that we do not. Nevertheless, here are some sources that you might find helpful. This one gives a short but fairly clear summary of the various perspectives, some of them you may have noticed being expressed by other members of the forum. In addition, it cites more Scripture passages for your consideration. http://www.creeds.net/ancient/descendit.htm Here is another summary that is more detailed, but fairly easy to read: http://www.ligonier.org/learn/devotionals/christs-descent-into-hell/ This one will take more effort to read, but it will provide you with a more detailed discussion: http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/christdecended.html Those of us in the forum will be praying for you as you study. God bless you as you seek to know His Word. In Him, Doc |

293 | where is obey the laws of the land | Rom 13:1 | DocTrinsograce | 240804
Hi, Sandra... Welcome to the forum! Probably the best place to see this would be Romans 13:1-7. Just a reminder, though, that any passage that gives us imperatives (things to do) will be rooted in doctrine (things to believe). Practices always have their roots in belief. Thus, in this particular case, the commands in the latter half of Romans are rooted in the doctrine of the first half of the book. Paul is especially consistent with this. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Anita... Welcome to the forum! I am glad that you are looking for specific Scriptural support for your questions! Thank you for asking! Our Lord's descent into hell is based on Ephesians 4:9; Acts 2:24; 1 Peter 3:19; Hosea 13:14; Zechariah 9:11; Colossians 2:15; and Psalm 23:7. In Him, Doc |

299 | Will christians be rapture before the ma | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 240770
Hi, Kathy... Welcome to the forum! I think there are some eschatological presuppositions that would weigh into any possible answer. Those would include perspectives on the "rapture" and the nature of the "mark of the beast." Consequently, you would get a different answer depending on whether the person responding was, for example, a Dispensationalist on one extreme or a Preterist on the other. What answer does your pastor give you? In Him, Doc |
