261 | If Gods in control y not easier ways | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 240973
Hi, Ryan... Welcome to the Study Bible Forum. The forum is not an appropriate place to seek personal counselling. You should ask your church elders or pastors for that kind of help. They know you much better than anyone here on the forum. Furthermore, the direct interaction with them will be far more helpful than the anonymity common to the Internet. In Him, Doc |

265 | I sit here blinded by tears but with | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 240942
Hi, Anita... If anything I have written is helpful, that would be entirely by the grace of God. The old Puritans used to refer speak of the "gift of tears." Left to ourselves, our hearts are but hard and stony. There are readers of our forum from one side of the world to the other. It is likely that the sun continually shines on those praying for you and your family. Imagine! One day, perhaps, you will come to us and tell us how the Lord has transformed your sons through the Gospel! Perhaps, in His providence, this is why He has given your sons a praying mother! 266 | Grace begins with Paul in Acts (? | Acts 9:1 | DocTrinsograce | 240932
Hi, heislord12... Welcome to the forum! Our forum consists of members with broad spectrum of perspectives, including many that presuppose a dispensational hermeneutic. That is particularly typical of American evangelicals, for it was here that John Darby's teaching caught hold, having been particularly promulgated through the bible notes of Cyrus Scofield -- all this in the last 120 years or so. An older approach used in Christendom, from the earliest days of the church and by bible egetes themselves, is what is called the historical-grammatical method. It is a hermaneutic that strives to derive meaning by the author's original intent, taking into account the specific genre of a book or passage. Therefore, I would ask, is there any room in your exegesis of scripture for the kerygmatic viewpoint? That is, the exegetical approach used by Christ and the Apostles (John 5:39; Ephesians 4:8-16)? 267 | Can I get into heaven by being a drug ad | Rev 22:15 | DocTrinsograce | 240930
Hi, Marty... In the Scriptures the word sorcery is translated from the root word pharmakeia, where we get our English word pharmacy. Thus, sorcery has fundamentally to do with the use of drugs. Alternatively, the recreational use of drugs is nothing more than drunkenness. Scripture is quite clear that those whose lives are dominated by these things are not saved – please read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Ephesians 5:5; Revelation 21:8; 22:15. Therefore, your current state is a very precarious one indeed. I do not think that I can express to you the danger in which you now find yourself. In fact, it would be unloving and sinful for me to offer you any comfort in your condition. On the contrary, you need to see and feel your peril. Jonathan Edwards, a Congregational New England minister, in 1741 (during the Great Awakening), expressed it well as follows, "The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire. He is of purer eyes than to bear you in his sight; you are ten thousand times as abominable in his eyes as the most hateful, venomous serpent is in ours. You have offended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince, and yet it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment. It is to be ascribed to nothing else that you did not got to hell the last night; that you were suffered to awake again in this world, after you closed your eyes to sleep. And there is no other reason to be given why you have not dropped into hell since you arose in the morning, but that God's hand has held you up. There is no other reason to be given why you have not gone to hell since you have sat here in the house of God provoking his pure eye by your sinful, wicked manner of attending his solemn worship. Yea, there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not this very moment drop down into hell." Nevertheless, Marty, you are alive at this moment, and you are even sufficiently concerned to ask the question you asked. The hope of the gospel is therefore still extended to you (Matthew 11:28-29). However, our God is jealous God (Exodus 20:5), and He will not be satisfied with your dedicated worship of other gods. I would encourage you to go the following website, look at the free courses that are available there, choose one, and take it: http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/ Meanwhile, those of us who are believers reading this, will be in earnest prayer for you; that the Lord our God will show mercy on you, while there is still time for you. Hi, Marty... Welcome to the forum! In a general sense, the devil has free access to those who are his own, however, for those who are redeemed, his access is limited through God; which thing He uses for His glory and our good. In Him, Doc |

269 | I have been praying for my sons who are | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 240924
Hi, Anita... Perhaps it is time for us to pray that God would mightily tamper with their wills; just as he did with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Boaz, Jonah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, the Disciples, Paul, etc. etc. There is nothing so precious a gift He gave to me by tampering with my will. Left to our devices there is nothing but misery, suffering, pain, affliction, and a lonely, unremarkable death. You know that these things are true for your sons if God should fail to tamper with their wills. All that they have now is their own way, and it is leading them unerringly to damnation. Ask God to have mercy on your sons; to intervene on their behalf; to do whatever is necessary for them to become men of God and God alone. Remember, ma'am, while their is life, there is hope. Persevere in prayer -- too your final breath. What is more, we will join you in this prayer. God specializes in the impossible. In Him, Doc |

271 | Pray for only people in Book Of Life | 1 Tim 2:1 | DocTrinsograce | 240917
Hi, wrbrown... Welcome to the forum! Scripture tells us to pray for all men. That probably means that we pray for some of His own and others who are not. Charles Spurgeon once said something that might have some bearing on the question: "If the Lord had put a yellow stripe down the backs of the elect, I'd go up and down the street lifting up shirt tails, finding out who had the yellow stripe, and then I'd give them the gospel. But God didn't do it that way. He told me to preach the gospel to every creature that 'whosoever will may come.'" The gospel call is free to all men. Consequently, we pray for all men. God will redeem His own (John 6:43-45) assuredly and certainly. In Him, Doc |

272 | where will those of us who are saved go | Matt 25:6 | DocTrinsograce | 240912
Hi, Anita... It always seems odd to me that people make a great show of all manner of ecstatic worship; yet the most marvelous worship -- that for which John says is thing for which we purify ourselves (1 John 3:2-3) -- right in the very presence of the Lamb, is so rarely mentioned. Once that actually takes place, I cannot imagine anyone who truly loves His appearing, will want to be anywhere else. In Him, Doc |

275 | meaning of they that call upon the name | Acts 11:4 | DocTrinsograce | 240889
Hi, Anita... That is a good question. One of the things that you have to watch for is when Scripture is speaking to a specific instance in a narrative and when Scripture is teaching a principle (didactic). If you think about it, we would be unwise to build our doctrine on the former passages. Regardless, this fellow in the following link did a pretty good job of addressing the question of household salvation. I think that what he says is pretty representative of orthodox Biblical thinking on the topic: http://www.gotquestions.org/household-salvation.html In Him, Doc |

276 | 3 levels of Christianity in Ephesians | Ephesians | DocTrinsograce | 240878
Hi, gochieng... Welcome to the forum! The Bible does not teach "levels of Christianity" and Paul certainly does not. I suspect that you are in that BSF class -- we sure get a lot of you all asking the same question. Anyway, Gnostics, the Decisional Regeneration bunch, and Semi-Pelagians teach various levels, but orthodox Biblical Christianity certainly does not. I would encourage you to find a Bible study class that will help you to properly interpret the Scriptures. In Him, Doc |

277 | What does John 15:7 mean? | John 15:7 | DocTrinsograce | 240875
Hi, Dee... Tim is right that the context of John 15 is Christ speaking to His disciples. However, it is commonly held that these words apply also to believers as a whole. The Scripture is replete with examples of God referring to His own as branches of the vine (cf Psalm 80:8-19; Isaiah 4:2; 5:1-7; 27:2-3; 60:21; 61:3; Jeremiah 2:21; 12:10; Ezekiel 15:2-6; Hosea 10:1; Zechariah 3:8; Matthew 20:1; 21:33; Luke 13:6). Our Savior is using this very metaphor, which would be very familiar to every Jew. Nonetheless, we need not puzzle over the question of who is being addressed, for the Apostle John, the one recording this Gospel, also wrote an epistle to believers in the church (1 John) in which the same sort of things are recorded! It is very good that you are using John 15 as a mirror – that is a good example to set for us all (James 1:22-25). A good exercise is to go through John 15 and record all of the attributes that Christ states belong to those who are His disciples. (I think the last time I did that, I came up with over 20 of them.) Then one can meditate on them, to see to what extent they apply to us, and to consider what we ought to do in order to cause them to increase. God is gracious that He doesn't tell us to just “feel” something or to experience something. Instead, He gives us characteristics that we can use for self examination (2 Corinthians 13:5). Another step would be to read 1 John while keeping in mind what you learned from the study of John 15. You will find there that John tells us that love characterizes the believer: Love of God, love of the brethren, love of the church, and love of righteousness (love of God's Word). It is exciting for me to see people drawn to the Word of God the way you have been drawn. For this is clear evidence of the Holy Spirit's work. That should be an encouragement! In the old days the word comfort was used in the sense of helping, healing, and easing the pain of soldiers wounded on the battlefield. We still hear it in sayings like “providing aid and comfort to the enemy.” Be assured that this is precisely the sense in which comfort is used for those who seek the Lord through His Word. It sounds very much as though you need exactly that kind of comfort. God bless you as you spend time learning to abide in Christ and let His Word abide in you! In Him, Doc |
