(NASB) "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." Hello scrumpmoss, This sounds like a homework question? A good Bible Dictionary or Concordance may be of help to you. Online you can check the resources at www.crosswalk.org "Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth." 426 | Tell no man? Why not? | Matt 16:20 | BradK | 218894
Hello humility, I wouldn't let this text bother you too much, my friend:-) Take a careful look at the verse. Nothing in the verse says (or implies) it was wrong to tell others. The ESV reads- "Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ." The NASB says, "Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ." The reason is pretty straight forward. As The Bible Knowledge Commentary suggests, "After making this great declaration about His future church program, Jesus told the disciples not to tell anyone that He is the Christ, the Messiah. The Lord knew it was too late for the nation to respond to His offer, and His rejection was drawing near. There was no reason for His disciples to be trying to convince a nation that had already turned from Him." I hope this helps, BradK |

427 | who were the gardarenes | Matt 8:28 | BradK | 218893
Hi lew, Welcome to the Forum, The New Bible Dictionary provides this information: "GADARENES, GADARA. The only biblical references to the Gadarene area concern the story of the miracle of Legion and the swine. The word ‘Gadarenes’ is found in some texts or versions of Mt. 8:28; Mk. 5:1; and Lk. 8:26. The probability is, however, that it is the original reading only in Mt. (Compare these vv. in av and modern evv.) The actual site of the miracle is in little doubt, at the edge of the Sea of Galilee. It would have been in a sub-district of Gadara, which lay 10 km SE of the Sea, near the gorge of the Yarmuk (or Hieromax). The Mishnah claims that Gadara dates from the OT period. It was held variously by Ptolemies, Seleucids, Jews and Romans between the 3rd century bc and the Jewish War. It was one of the Decapolis cities. The ruins at Umm Qays now mark the site. (*Gerasa.)" 429 | agreeing with chuch | 1 Tim 4:16 | BradK | 218820
Hello Alaci, Welcome to the Forum! Since your question is general- and I don't know specifics- I can only comment generally:-) I would say, it's important- even crucial- that we agree on the Essentials of the Faith: The Diety of Christ, the Authority of Scripture, Salvation by grace through faith, etc. I would assume your church is Orthodox and holds these beliefs? So, in essentials unity (Eph. 4:3-6); In non-essentials, such as manner and frequency of Communion, Baptism, the perpetuity of Sign gifts, etc. there's room for grace.(Rom. 14:1) When I started attending my present church, there were some areas with which I disagreed. I met with my pastor and he said something very simple, yet profound, "Brad, I'm the senior Pastor and there are things I disagree with!". I thought, "hmmm... good point". I'm still fellowowshipping there and teaching some 13-plus years later! So, I truly believe it's not that we disagree- as long as it's not over essentials- but how we learn to agree to disagree over the non-essentials! These can be huge stumbling blocks... 430 | Obedience better than sacrifice? | Gen 4:5 | BradK | 218588
Hello Humility, I can give you a couple of reasons stated from scripture: 1. Heb 11:4 tells us, "By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks." (NASB) The corollary- and implication- is that Cain's sacrifice was not "by faith"; 2. In Gen. 3:17 we take note that God cursed the ground because of sin, "...Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life." (NASB) In Gen. 4:3 we're told, "So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground." (NASB) I hope this helps, BradK |

432 | Moses as killer? | Exodus | BradK | 218328
Hello Zilla, The short, simple answer is that none of us without sin or too far from the reach of God's grace. Neither was Moses. As with Rahab, he is commended for his faith in Heb. 11:23-29. Five times it's mentioned, "by faith". This does not excuse his action, make it right, holy or a good example. What are you to learn? Read the aforementioned passage in Hebrews and meditiate on it:-) The question really becomes, how does the Holy Spirit through the inspired Word of God testify of Moses? 433 | Rehab's motivation | Josh 6:25 | BradK | 218304
Hello Chosen Mom, Scripture doesn't speak to her lack of obedience to the 10 Commandments, nor does it to her lie. Again, she is commended for her faith! I think it better to stick with what scripture does tell us than to delve into speculations? Heb. 11:31- "By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace." James 2:25- "In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?" Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

434 | Animals in heaven? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 218272
Hello fiskecherry, Welcome to the Forum. There is actually no direct mention in scripture of animals in heaven. However, here is what Eccl. 3:19-21 says: Eccl 3:19 - For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity. Eccl 3:20 - All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust. Eccl 3:21 - Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth? 438 | Why was it ok for Rehab to lie? | Josh 6:25 | BradK | 218186
Hello Chosen Mom, It's an interesting and frequently-asked question. As brother Tim noted, scripture doesn't address the issue of her lying. I think this significant. What it does is commend her faithfulness- as written in Faith's Hall of Fame: Heb 11:31 - "By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace." (NASB) Through the inspired Word, we are given her example of faithfulness- despite her being named as a harlot. God's grace does indeed extend further than all our sin and shame:-) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
