1201 | Confronting another about sin | Bible general Archive 3 | BradK | 165474
Dear dr... I echo both brother kalos and Hank in their advice. Scripturally, I think Proverbs 5 and 7 speak to your situation directly. In all seriousness, Read them, re-read them, meditate on them and pray about it. I would keep your distance from this lady as it isn't proper to do anything else at this point. Urgently seek the advice and counsel of your Pastor/Elders or other trusted mature Christian. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1202 | is the word elephant in the bible/apocra | 1 Kin 10:22 | BradK | 165412
Hi Chris, I have to admit, I'm not familiar with your story reference. However, Eastons' Bible Dictionary does give a bit of info that will hope fully shed some light: "Elephant — not found in Scripture except indirectly in the original Greek word (elephantinos) translated “of ivory” in Rev. 18:12, and in the Hebrew word (shenhabim, meaning “elephant’s tooth”) rendered “ivory” in 1 Kings 10:22 and 2 Chr. 9:21." 1203 | Is it a sin to be love with your cousin? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 165282
Hello Lost Lamb, First, I don't know your intentions- long term- but you might want to check your specific State Law first to find out if it's even legal...? Second, it's not necessarily wrong to be "in love" with your cousin. It's the actions that are taken on it that may be wrong. Are the feelings mutual? As this isn't a counselling Forum, you would be better served by seeking the advice of a Pastor or other mature Christian whom you trust and would value their advice. I Hope this helps, BradK |

1204 | Wife of my youth? Rejoice how? | 1 Cor 7:1 | BradK | 165173
Hello allforlife, Good question! Here's my suggestion. First, ask yourself, is this verse in Proverbs "descriptive" or "prescriptive"? Study the whole context of Chap. 15; Second, I think you'd be better served to look at the scriptures that clearly deal with and speak to marriage- such as 1 Cor. 7 ( you might also want to do a topical study of "marriage"). Read, study, and meditate upon the chapter and commit to praying about your situation. Seek Him! Here's my admonition to you both: Prov. 3:5-6! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1205 | Sin | Rom 5:12 | BradK | 164973
Hello metamorph, That is a good question. Here are 2 parts to consider. 1. No the Bible doesn't say that sin is not sin until it is known to us. You may be refering to Rom. 7:7? Adam and Eve sinned without the law. They disobeyed what God had explicitly told them in Gen. 2:16-17. (cf. Gen. 3:6) Romans 2:11-12 tells us: "For there is no partiality with God. For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law;" 2. The Ten Commandments (the decalog) forms the core of biblical ethics. William Dyrness writes, "This law which was given at Sinai was not so much a new law as an authoritative formulation of already existing instruction (see Gen. 2:2-3 on the sabbath; 9:5 on murder; 26:9-10 on adultery). All of the relations between God and His people are covered." "OT ethics are an expression of the character of God. Remember, Polytheism sets many standards, monotheism sets one. This unity lies behind the centrality of the Ten Commandments in the law and Christ's summation of the law: love God and love you neighbor (Matt. 22:37-40)" [Themes in OT Theology] I hope this helps, BradK |

1206 | Watch out that no one deceives you.... | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 164919
Hi Brenda L, I'd be very cautious about following any teachings of this Mary K. Baxter. Here's why: 1. The Bible already tells us quite alot about hell. Her statement implies we can't find the answers in the bible? It's a little like coming to and intersection when you have clearly posted Stop signs and signal lights. I doesn't make much sense:-) 2. The claim that Jesus took her there reeks of mysticism. It is extra-biblical and not very credible. 3. It negates the authority of scripture- it is and end-run around the Bible. If we can't or don't accept what the Bible clearly teaches and we instead rely upon highly subjective experiences, scripture becomes meaningless! (2. Tim. 3:16) We had a lady in our adult Sunday school class who has similar experiences. They carry very little credibilty! I would focus my efforts on what the Bible teaches. God has revealed what He wants us to know in the pages of scripture. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1207 | The history on 1 Timothy 1:12 | 1 Tim 1:12 | BradK | 164895
Hi Godpurpose, I'm not sure what you're looking for when you ask for the history on this verse? Perhaps you mean commentary? As it is Paul writing, you may read the verses before and after to get the flow and context- if you haven't already done so. If that doesn't help or answer your question, let me know. 1209 | marriage and divorce | 1 Cor 7:1 | BradK | 164783
Dear manofvalor, I'm sorry to hear of your circumstances. You will be lifted up in prayer, my friend. As this Forum is not suited for counselling, the best I can do is recommend that along with reading 1 Cor. 7, you seek competent and local counsel. Your Pastor or close Christian brother would be an obvious start. May the Lord guide and direct you during this difficult time and give you His peace, which surpasses all understanding! BradK |

cerealkiller??? Out of curiosity, what type of name is this and to what does it refer? Daniel's age is not given, though based on the cronology of events , he is probably somewhere in his 20's or 30's. I hope this helps, BradK |

1211 | Do evil spirits posses people today? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 164627
Hello ChristianOnly, It would depend whether you're referring to a believer or non-believer. However, consider what 1 John 4:4 tells us: "You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." Here are the passages that deal with Demon Possession: 1. Man of Capernaum, healed by Christ in the synagogue on the Sabbath Mark 1:24; Luke 4:35 2. Maniac of Gadara, possessed by and healed of a legion of demons Matt. 8:28–32; Mark 5:2–13; Luke 8:33 3. A mute man healed by Christ, causing the multitudes to rejoice Matt. 9:32–33 4. A girl from Tyre and Sidon, healed at request of her heartbroken mother Matt. 15:28; Mark 7:29 5. A boy at the base of Mount Hermon, healed at the request of his heartbroken father Matt. 17:18; Mark 9:25; Luke 9:42 6. A blind and deaf man whom Christ was accused of healing by the power of Beelzebub Matt. 12:22; Luke 11:14 7. Woman with an 18-year infirmity, healed by Christ in a synagogue on the Sabbath Luke 13:10–13 8. Mary Magdalene, healed by Christ of seven demons Mark 16:9; Luke 8:2 9. Judas Iscariot, possessed by Satan himself Luke 22:3; John 6:70; 13:27 10. A slave girl with powers of divination, healed by Paul at Philippi Acts 16:16–18 11. Sceva’s sons, renegade Jews at Ephesus Acts 19:15 12. The Antichrist, world dictator during the Great Tribulation Rev. 16:13 13. False prophet, evil helper of the Antichrist Rev. 16:13 [Willmington, H. L. Willmington's Book of Bible Lists.] May you have a blessed and Merry CHRISTmas, BradK |

1212 | Anyone have a word on Word Faith? | 2 Tim 4:4 | BradK | 164554
Hi John, Since you asked, I'll gladly tell you my thoughts. I hope this won't open up the proverbial "can of worms". You can also access the "Search" function on this site to view the multitude of discussions on the SBF. It is a heresy that I believe ignores the many attributes of God and relegates Him to that of a vending machine. God does not exist for the sole purpose of granting our wishes and making our lives healthy and wealthy! We might have those results but it is within God's perogative to allow- or not. My main concern with this type of theology- or lack thereof- is that it ignores seeking God for Who He IS rather than what He can do for me. Job. 1:9 is a great example: "Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Why shouldn't we be content with seeking God for Who He IS? Is not it Him alone that we should desire and be content with (Ps. 105:3-4)? WOF theology denies this and makes God subservient to our desires. I believe Jonathan Edwards said it very well when he stated "THE GOOD WHICH SHALL BE BROUGHT BY PRAYER: GOD HIMSELF. Scripture says, "They shall go to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of Hosts." The good that they seek for is "The Lord of Hosts," Himself. If "seeking God" means no more than seeking the favor or mercy of God then "praying before the Lord," and "seeking the Lord of Hosts" must be looked upon as synonymous. However, "seeking the Lord" is commonly used to mean something far more than seeking something from God. Surely it implies that God Himself is what is desired and sought after." I believe the answer has more to do with our economic success than it does the historical and Biblically Orthodox faith! The god of WOF is a man-made invention wrapped within 20th and 21st Century American prosperity! It is man seeking the god of convenience and comfort rather than the God of the Bible. I trust this will give you some perspective and food for thought on this rampantly growing and proliferating movement. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1214 | Did Jesus experence real temptation? | Heb 4:15 | BradK | 164386
Hi Brazos, Consider Heb. 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin." The question really is how do we understand this passage. It touches upon what's called, "the Impeccability of Christ": The Impeccability of Christ The meaning of impeccability has also been debated. Some, of course, do not think Christ was sinless, but among those who do there are two views of impeccability. One says that He was able not to sin while the other states that He was not able to sin. In either case He did not sin, though one viewpoint involves the possibility that He could have. That idea is usually held because it is hard to understand how His temptations could have been real if He could not have sinned. That He did not sin and that He was tempted are facts agreed on. How could the temptations have been real if He could not have sinned? Part of the answer lies in discovering what Hebrews 4:15 says and what it does not say. Literally, the verse reads this way: “ ... having been tested according to all, according to likeness, apart from sin.” It does not say that Christ was tempted with a view to succumbing to sin. He was tested with a view to proving He was sinless. It does not say that He was tested in every particular specific test that man can be put to. It does say that His tests were in all the areas in which a man can be tested: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The particular tests within those areas were entirely different for Him from the ones for us. The phrase “according to likeness” apparently means that He could be tested because He took the likeness of sinful flesh. “Apart from sin” means that, having no sin nature, He could not have been tested from that avenue, as we can and usually are. His temptations were really not to see if He could sin, but to prove that He could not. Nevertheless, they were real, for the reality of a test does not lie either in the moral nature of the one tested or in the ability to yield to it. And, of course, His ability to sympathize with us does not demand a one-to-one correspondence in the particulars of the tests." [Ryrie, C. C.: A Survey of Bible Doctrine] There is a lot to chew on here, but I trust this will help you in the answering of your question. BradK |

1215 | why is the world in chaos in verse 2 | Gen 1:1 | BradK | 164373
Dear thirsty, Basically, it depends on one's view as to whether or not something happened between Gen. 1:1 and 1:2. In general, this is referred to as the "Gap Theory": "The gap theory postulates that an indefinite span of time exists between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. This time span is usually considered to be quite large (millions of years) and is also reputed to encompass the so-called “geologic ages.” Proponents of the gap theory also postulate that a cataclysmic judgment was pronounced upon the earth during this period as the result of the fall of Lucifer (Satan) and that the ensuing verses of Genesis chapter 1 describe a re-creation or reforming of the earth from a chaotic state and not an initial creative effort on the part of God." For further info, you can go to netbible.org and look under "Topics: Creation". I hope this helps, BradK |

1216 | Some questions from a graduate | James 4:17 | BradK | 164324
Hi Mark, You ask some very good questions. Let me summarize your many questions by briefly touching on 2 aspects: 1. I think the overriding principle (for you) is found in James 4:17: "Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin." 2. There is also the principle of Christian liberty detailed in Romans 14. "So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this--not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way." We are all at different levels of spiritual maturity in our walk. Hopefully, as we continue to seek the Lord and become more conformed to His image, our lives will be transformed (Rom. 12:1-2). Then, "the things of the world will grow strangely dim". May I encourage you to keep on reading and studying, my friend:-) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1217 | why satan wasn't dealt with right away? | Rom 16:20 | BradK | 164274
Hi Brenda L, We know this: Satan will always be under God’s control, who will eventually destroy him (Rom 16:20; Rv 20:10). The best answer I can give is that he exists and is allowed by God for His glory. Eph. 1:11 says, " also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will" God allows satan to exist but doesn't explicitly reveal His "why" for it in scripture. I hope this helps, BradK |

1218 | divorce and remarriage for chirstians | 1 Cor 7:1 | BradK | 164173
Hi Evangelistit, Well, there are many assumptions that could be made. Is this in fact, a real-life situation? Without knowing specifics, it's nearly impossible to give accurate advice. Further, the Study Bible Forum is not equipped to provide counsel. However, the entire 7th chapter of 1 Corinthians should give some Biblical direction. Particularly note vs. 39-40. I hope this helps, BradK |

1220 | WHAT HAPPENS TO A MAN WHEN HE DIES | Heb 9:27 | BradK | 164058
Hi Jim, Welcome to the Forum. I can tell you briefly 2 things. Heb. 9:27 tells us: "And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment," 2 Cor. 5:8 says: "we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord." I hope this helps, BradK |
