We cannot discount scriptures as being "cultural" because then they lose their relevancy to our lives. Here are some verses which may help and have not been mentioned in this thread so far. * 1 Cor. 1:1-2 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God... 2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord The epistle is not just addressed to the Corinthians, but to "all (who)... call upon the name of Jesus..." That includes you and me. * 1 Cor. 14:35 "...it is a shame for women to speak in the (assembly)." Again - to say this is cultural would mean that it was only a shame for Corinthian women to speak, but everywhere else, it was OK. * 1 Cor. 14:37 "...the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord." Does God issue commandments only to certain cultures? No, His word is applicable to everyone everywhere, and should be heeded and obeyed. May God use His word to continually exercise each of us. A brother by His grace... |
