"Pentecost" literally means the "fiftieth day." It was also sometimes called the "Feast of Weeks." It was one of the feasts that was implemented in the Mosaic law. This particular feast was a celebration of the wheat harvest. Some commentators have also noted that the Mosaic law was given about 50 days after Passover, drawing parallels between the events at Sinai (where the law was given) and the events of Pentecost (where the Spirit was given).
