Hi Bauhinia, Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your answer, and very well done by the way. You did a very good job of expounding on my answer. :-) Thanks again. However, If you would like amahony to get notification, [via email,] that you have answered the question, you need to click on the original question to answer it. No problem though, we all do that from time to time. ;-) But sense I'm here, I would like to point out if I may, and I hope you don't think I'm just being critical, I do think that it is important to see that this particular group of jews were not "God's people" as you have stated. Jesus called them the devil's children. It was Isaiah that called them "My people." Their genealogy may have been Jewish, but I think I would say, they were certainly not God's people. John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. I'm also not to clear on what you said about them being "unpunishable" and I don't really like to use that term myself, because it is not God's desire to punish. He does "judge" the one's who reject Him though, as He had done in the past with the nation Israel at the hand's of the Babylonians, and the Assyrians. So I hope you can see why I am a little confused by you saying that they were unpunishable, and again I don't really like using that term, punish, God's desire, or, "will" if you please, is that none should perish. And remember, Jesus was broken hearted over Jerusalem, when He "judged" them in Matthew 23:37b. "How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling." ... I hope this helps you in your study. God bless. John |

1466 | Why Saul did not recognize David? | 1 Samuel | stjohn | 189553
Hi Azure, Here is more information that I found on the question that you asked. ------- Matthew Henry Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible "The notice that was taken of David. Though he had been at court formerly, yet, having been for some time absent (v. 15), Saul had forgotten him, being melancholy and mindless, and little thinking that his musician would have spirit enough to be his champion; and therefore, as if he had never seen him before, he asked whose son he was. Abner was a stranger to him, but brought him to Saul (v. 57), and he gave a modest account of himself, v. 58. And now he was introduced to the court with much greater advantages than before, in which he owned God’s hand performing all things for him." -------- Also, here is the complete paragraph from, Jamieson, Fausset, Brown, that may help explain why saul asked; whose son is this youth? and did not say; who are you? ---------- Jamieson, Fausset, Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible 55-58." Saul . . . said unto Abner . . . whose son is this youth?--[A young man is more spoken of in many Eastern countries by his father's name than his own.] The growth of the beard, and other changes on a now full-grown youth, prevented the king from recognizing his former favorite minstrel " --------------- Thank you for your question, looking into this has given me a better understanding as well. :-) God bless. John |

1468 | Why Saul did not recognize David? | 1 Samuel | stjohn | 189525
Hello again sister, You are quite astute! very good observation! ;-) I must say you are a very good Bible student! Although he was still a youth, he was nonetheless full grown at this time, and assumed, with a beard. Here is a quote from Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset, and David Brown "The growth of the beard, and other changes on a now full-grown youth, prevented the king from recognizing his former favorite minstrel" I guess we don't know for certain, but this seems like a good explanation. God bless. John |

Hello, It's always a pleasure to meet a virtuouswoman. :-) Coincidentally the Bible study that I listen to at ttg.org or Oneplace.com, Thru the Bible daily Bible study, has just gone over something that I believe is quite similar to your friends situation. It seems the tribe's of Ephraim and Manasseh, were complaining to Joshua about the fact they had not been given enough land. So, Joshua simply told them, [go and get more land]. He was basically telling them, that if they wanted it, they would have to WORK for it. Joshua was saying that if what they had was not enough, you are strong and and well equipped to do it, so go work for it, go take it. He was not going to just hand it to them. Maybe your friend could use the resources to help them to get a job. I hope this helps. Josh 17:14-18 Then the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given me only one lot and one portion for an inheritance, since I am a numerous people whom the LORD has thus far blessed?" Joshua said to them, "If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you." The sons of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the valley land have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth-shean and its towns and those who are in the valley of Jezreel." Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, "You are a numerous people and have great power; you shall not have one lot only, but the hill country shall be yours. For though it is a forest, you shall clear it, and to its farthest borders it shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, even though they have chariots of iron and though they are strong." God bless. John |

1471 | Who moved the Sabbath to Sun.? | Col 2:16 | stjohn | 189484
Mark 2:23-28 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" And He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?" Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." First of all, I do not want to get into a debate, so I will say this and that will be it. I will not reply again. I have read through the thread in which this question was posted, and I didn't see this point being made, so please everyone, forgive me if it was, and also for carrying this issue further. But I think this should be said, because it's something that should be thought about by the "religious" people today, that say that we should keep the sabbath. I am not saying by the way, that if a man should feel in his heart and believe that he should keep it, that he should not, that is his right, and it is between him and God. That does not however, give him the right to put others under the law. This may shock you, but by "not rebuking" his disciples, in the sight of the "religious" Pharisees, Jesus was breaking the sabbath. Nor, did He say anything to indicate that David had sinned. So many people want to take what Jesus did on the cross and add something to it. salvation by grace, Plus, keeping a bunch of "religious" rules. Now please, Lets look what happens in the next chapter. This is were Jesus really got the "religious" Pharisees In an uproar. And I'd like to point out that what happened there in the synagogue, in my opinion, was a setup. These "religious" men, were really looking for a way to get rid of Him, because He threatened there ability to rule over men with the law. May I remind, that in the sermon on the mount Jesus raised the Commandments to the nth degree. So, we should assume by that He would also raise this one as well. Right? Not really, look what He does here, and remember also what He did in the last chapter. He was not keeping the letter of the law in their view at all. Mark 3:1-6 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" And He said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. Shouldn't we also do good on every day of the week. The religious people In Jesus' day, wanted to destroy Him, just like so many "religious" people today, want to "destroy" the rest or sabbath that we, as Christians have found in Jesus Christ, by making Christianity nothing more then just another religion. Salvation by grace, plus.... something. God bless. John |

Amen brother Doc, and a good reminder to all that we should check ourselves continually, and stand in His grace to forgive us of our sin of pride, which I am convinced, that all men are guilty of. It's very easy to be proud of our humility! I like what old Dr McGee said facetiously, "The proudest day of my life, was the day I became humble." ;-) God bless. John |

Dear brother Hank, Yes I am quite aware of the fact that other sources are acceptable here at SBF. And very frankly, I'm suprized that you would think that my reference to my Brother, and friend, Rick/InGodITrust, was anything but a friendly plug for his book [Agape Love] .. [There's another plug for ya Rick] And, if by chance I did offend I do humbly apologize. Also I would like to offer to anyone who is interested in my little story, The Little Tree, you can contact me via email in my user profile. It's a short story and I can send it in a ward document. I'd be glad to share it. |

Thanks Hank "sola scriptura" I am guilty as well for I too have quoted from other then the Holy Writ to answer questions or post notes, although Easton's, Hitchcock's or Smith's, Bible Dictionaries, may not be Bible Scripture, they might be a bit more reliable then some others. ;-) I do appreciate seeing quotes from authors like Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Matthew Henry, John Gill, John Darby, John Wesley, and also one of my favorite authors is J.V. McGee And my second favorite author is Rick Gowdy, but my favorite all time is, John A Scott, author of The Little Tree and My Mom. ;-) Both are as close to holy writ as you can get, by the way. ;-) God bless. John |
