Hello Hank Just an addition concerning who/what was nailed to the cross. Col. 2:14 (ESV) by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. Steve |

205 | HOW COULD JESUS BE A DESCENDANT OF DAVID | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 53241
Hello nsgrace You make odd statements about the Lord Jesus Christ being a child of Abraham and David only by faith. Not so. Luke 3 places Mary in the direct physical line of David and Abraham. Besides, why would Christ need faith? He is the very reality of all that God is. Steve |

Hello Bub "Who commanded Sunday? (chapter and verse please)." Acts 20:7 (ESV) On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread... "[A]s the LORD's feasts are different from yours....whose are you observing? (chapter and verse please)." 1 Cor. 11:23-25 (ESV) For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, [24] and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." [25] In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." "[W]hat does 'Jesus' mean?" Je·sus -- A teacher and prophet whose life and teachings form the basis of Christianity. Christians believe Jesus to be Son of God and the Christ. [Middle English, from Late Latin Iesus, from Greek Iesous, from Hebrew yeshua, from yehoshua, Joshua.] "Who are your gentile role models?" #1 Lord Jesus Christ who fulfilled the Law on our behalf. Romans 8:3-4 (ESV) For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, [4] in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. #2 Paul, who jumped on Peter for causing Gentiles to live like Jews. Galatians 2:14 (ESV) But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?" #3 The church which is Christ's body. 1 Cor. 12:12-13 (ESV) For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. [13] For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. -------------------------------- Acts 21:20 is speaking of Jews in Jerusalem who still retained ties to the Law. Gentiles were exempt. Acts 21:25 (ESV) But as for the Gentiles who have believed, we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality." Acts 17 is not Gentiles wanting to hang out with Jews, but Jews wanting to hang out with Gentiles. Paul was speaking to Greeks on the Areopagus. Steve |

Hello Bub "This is a command? You will eradicate the 4th commandment on the basis of Acts 20:7?" No, it's not a command. It was their practice. They had no qualms about meeting on the first day of the week for this. "This is Passover, a feast of the LORD. I was pretty much looking for your justification for xmas and easter…….the holiest days on the Christian calendar so I’ve been told." It's not the Passover but the Lord's Supper. There's a difference. As for Xmas and Easter, I will not justify their existence. "[W]hat does [Jesus] intrinsically mean? By following the lexical history I provided, you can see it means "Yah saves." "Do you know of any other historical figure who has had his name changed from culture to culture? (other than santa claus)." Most of the non-English immigrants of this country before 1900 including my own family name. But you asked for prominent historical figures. John Calvin comes to mind. His given name is Jean Cauvin. "Notice from your own references, the proper English translation is 'Joshua'……..where did the word 'Jesus' come from?" I provided that--[Middle English, from Late Latin Iesus, from Greek Iesous, from Hebrew yeshua, from yehoshua, Joshua.] Steve |

Hello Bub #1 "Let me rephrase the question……which of your role models are gentiles? All the ones you mention are Jewish." All?! I only mentioned one--the Lord Jesus Christ. I could mention the apostle Paul who was of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews but considered it all rubbish in view of Christ Jesus (Phil 3:5-9); who also stated emphatically that positionally there is neither Jew nor Gentile (Gal 3:28) and has made of the two groups, one new man (Eph 2:14-16). "You…..Romans 8:3-4 Me……see Eze 36:26-27" I know this Scripture well. Jesus referred to it in John 3. What's your point? #2 "You don’t like Peter? Are his epistles then not credible? Wasn’t Peter led of the Spirit just like Paul? This causes a problem…..Isn’t this the same Paul who said, 'You, then, why do you judge your brother?' (Ro 14:10)." I'm not judging Peter. Paul already did that. I like Peter's epistle a great deal, both in study and teaching. #3 "See Eze 36:26-27" Meaning? Steve |

Hello Bub "Acts 21:20...The subject at hand was not Jewish believers, but newly converted gentiles. If they were exempt, what was the point of mentioning Moses, synagogues and Sabbath?" The Gentile converts were mentioned, but the emphasis of the exchange is on Jewish believers. "Acts 21:25...Are you saying that these are the all inclusive guidelines for all gentiles for all time?" No. I'm saying these suggestions were given at that time so that the new believers from Gentile backgrounds would not be a stumbling-block to the new believers from a Jewish background. They have no other purpose. I used it to show how those former Gentiles were shown to be forbearing to their brethren born under the Law. The Law had no place with these former Gentiles. "AC 17:1 “When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a JEWISH SYNAGOGUE. [2] AS HIS CUSTOM WAS, PAUL WENT INTO THE SYNAGOGUE, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,..." Excellent point. My mistake. Steve |

210 | ?? about Trinity Bible College | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 55871
Hello Jim The class material was odd. For OT Synthesis there was a textbook written by Thomas R. Rodgers (past president of Trinity) which had some useful information, and the accompanying cassette lectures were just Dr Rodgers reading the book. There were two accompanying books: 1) Where Is History Going? by John W Montgomery. This was confusing and certainly unnecessary for the class. 2) Another book of "Biblical archeology" that questioned the veracity of anything written in Scripture. It gave good archeological information, but I couldn't abide calling Scripture, "myth". I just gave up on looking at anything else. Steve |

Hello Joe Allow me to correct myself. RCC believed in transubstantiation. Certain reformers, knowing this to be invalid, yet being uncomfortable with the idea of the Lord's Supper being only a memorial feast, taught consubstantiation. I have read teaching on baptism that was rather complex (including both "paedobaptism" and "grace of baptism"). I'll admit they left me confused. I agree that the RCC is not wrong on everything. Hello Janice The only ones having spiritual authority would be the spiritual leaders of the early churches. Because of early heresy, they decided to conduct church councils to iron out, once and for all, what exactly was Scripture. It isn't that they did not already know, but there is safety in a multitude of counselors. This way they could prove to detractors what God had given. Also, I saw EdB's response concerning Jehovah. I had forgotten about Tyndale's work. His answer may be more correct. Steve |

217 | HOW COULD JESUS BE A DESCENDANT OF DAVID | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 67947
Hello Rob I must disagree with your statement: "To conclude this portion of the question, not only did God form Jesus, but He dwelt in the physical body of Jesus through His Spirit." What you have stated is that Jesus had a human body but a divine spirit. This is not accurate. He was fully God and fully man--100 percent of each--in one person. While it's true that God does not have a body, the spiritual make-up of Christ was two natures--human and divine. Steve |

Hi justme I used NASB for 20 years and NKJV for 9. When ESV came out I received one for Christmas and have used it since. I think the translators did a great job with the text, and I applaud them for not being bound by the verse numbers. There is more than one place where the phrases of a sentence were moved to a preceding or following verse so that the whole sentence read more naturally. Steve |

Hello justme It's published by Crossway. Go to http://www.gnpcb.org/home/esv/ and follow the links. There's a very solid, Bible-believing group behind this translation. It's basically word-for-word with some adjustments for language differences. Steve |
