781 | WHICH COMES FIRST, THE RAPTURE OR TRIBUL | NT general Archive 1 | kalos | 31153
Pretribulationalism "This view was first known as "the secret" or "any moment rapture." It is a relatively new position which was first taught by the founder of the Catholic Apostolic Church, Edward Irving in the late 1820's. It was then picked up by Plymouth Brethren pastor John Nelson Darby, and he first preached on it in 1843. It came to America in the late 1800's . . . Pretribulationists teach that the return of Christ has been imminent since the days of the early church and that the church will be raptured sometime before the seventieth week begins. Although they have no Scripture that in so many words teaches it, they teach that there are no signs and the rapture could take place at any moment. The seventieth week of Daniel is therefore considered to be a seven-year period of God's judgmental "tribulation" (hence the term pretribulation). This position generally views the seventieth week as the day of the Lord's wrath from which the church is excluded." (www.signministries.org/positions.htm) |

PREWRATH RAPTURE, THE "The position that the true church will be raptured when the great tribulation by Antichrist, inspired by Satan, is cut short by God's day-of-the-Lord wrath, (Matt. 24:22) which will occur between the sixth and seventh seals of Revelation, sometime during the second half of the seventieth week. (cf. Rev. 7:9-17) The persecution associated with the great tribulation of Antichrist is viewed as the wrath of Satan, whereas the events that follow beginning with the seventh seal, are considered the wrath of God."(http://www.signministries.org/glossary.htm) |

Prewrath "The Prewrath position teaches that the true church will be raptured when the great tribulation by Antichrist, inspired by Satan, is cut short by God's day-of-the-Lord wrath, which will occur between the sixth and seventh seals of Revelation, sometime during the second half of the seventieth week. The persecution associated with the great tribulation of Antichrist is viewed as the wrath of Satan, whereas the events that follow, beginning with the seventh seal, are considered the wrath of God. There is another term that is sometimes expressed, "historical premillennialism," which refers back to the teaching of the early church fathers before 325 A.D. who believed that the church would face the persecution of Antichrist and Christ would then reign for 1000 years upon the earth. With the exception of two, Origen and Clement of Alexandria, who were allegorist, they all taught this view. Prewrath is plainly and simply an expansion of this view which was biblical then and biblical now." (www.signministries.org/positions.htm) |

"Sickness is the fruit of sin." Not always. John 9:1-3 Holman Christian Standard Bible 9:1 As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. 9:2 His disciples questioned Him: "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 9:3 "Neither this man sinned nor his parents," Jesus answered. HALF TRUTH: "...according to James 2:24 we are not justified by faith alone either." TRUTH: According to James 2:24 ALONE we are not justified by faith ALONE. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. (James 2:24, NASB) For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. (Romans 4:2 KJV) Which is true and correct -- Romans 4 or James 2? Do Paul and James contradict each other? If they do, then the Bible contradicts itself. If the Bible contradicts itself, then how can it be inspired of God? Fact: Paul and James do not contradict each other. Fact: The Bible does not contradict itself. Fact: "All Scripture is inspired by God" (2 Tim 3:16). Fact: God, who cannot lie, never contradicts Himself. Conclusion: Romans 4 and James 2 are both true. James 2:21 *justified by works.* "This does not contradict Paul's clear teaching that Abraham was justified before God by grace alone through faith alone (Rom. 3:20; 4:1-25; Gal. 3:6, 11). (...) "James' teaching perfectly complements Paul's writings; salvation is DETERMINED by faith alone (Eph. 2:8,) and DEMONSTRATED by faithfulness to obey God's will alone (Eph. 2:10)" (emphasis added, page 1930, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). "One of the basic principles of biblical interpretation is the analogia scriptura, the analogy of Scripture. In other words, we must compare Scripture with Scripture in order to understand its full and proper sense. And since the Bible doesn't contradict itself, any interpretation of a specific passage that contradicts the general teaching of the Bible is to be rejected. Since the general teaching of the Bible is . . . that baptism and other forms of ritual are not necessary for salvation, no individual passage could teach otherwise" (http://www.gty.org/IssuesandAnswers/archive/baptism.htm). |

Just for the sake of clarification, would you please tell us what you mean by "remain faithful"? Please be as specific as possible and tell us, exactly what does it mean to "remain faithful"? What does that include? Or, at what point does one (what does one have to do to) cease to remain faithful? I am not challenging or disagreeing with you. I just want to be clear on what you are talking about when you say "remain faithful". |

787 | "Sons" of perdition? | NT general Archive 1 | kalos | 38631
John 17:12 (NKJV) While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. You write: "I believe the son of perdition is satan in John 17:12." OK. Let's test your theory. It should be easy to do. We'll just substitute the word "Satan" for "son of perdition" in John 17:12. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except [Satan], that the Scripture might be fulfilled. |

You make a good point that anyone who is OUT of kindergarten should be able to understand. Let me add another example to what you have said. In the American Heritage Dictionary the verb "see" has 20 major definitions. To rigidly translate every occurence of the English word "see" into another language to mean 'to perceive with the eye' would be the height of absurdity and idiocy. My question is: when people don't even understand plain English, what business do they have monkeying around with Greek? |

Question: "Judas is also one of the twelve that Jesus sent healing the sick. Is there really a question of whether Judas was a true believer or if he had the Spirit within, considering he was sent to perform miracles and heal and many other things which could only be done by one indwelt fully by the Holy Spirit?" Answer: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:21-23 King James Version (Authorized) |

Steve: (This is not directed at you personally. The reason is that you did not say that you disagreed, but that "there is disagreement." So do not take this as criticism of you, my friend.) Any disagreement over which is more correct -- Mark or Luke -- is a denial of and attack upon the inspiration and authority of the Bible. ALL SCRIPTURE is equally inspired. The idea that some parts of the Bible are more "correct" than others is sheer nonsense. Also, we need to realize that, strictly speaking, the Gospels are NOT biographies. Grace to you, kalos |

"You shall not bow down to them or serve them" Tim: Thank you for bringing common sense to this discussion (as others in this thread have also done). The commandment says ""You shall not bow down to them or serve them". To suggest that anyone bows down to or serves a Christmas tree borders on the absurd. Exodus 20:4-5 (ESV) "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. [5] You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, Peace, kalos |

796 | Trend in NT...Jews, Gentiles, Jews | NT general Archive 1 | kalos | 107538
Is Revelation written to or for the Jews [alone]? This question has been raised in this thread. Rev. 1:1a (ESV) The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place... Rev. 1:4a (ESV) John to the seven churches that are in Asia: According to the text of the book, Revelation is given by God "to show to his SERVANTS". And it is addressed "to the seven CHURCHES that are in Asia." Rev. 1:3 (ESV) Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. The blessing is to "the one who reads". It doesn't say to the Jew who reads or the Gentile who reads, but the one who reads. The blessing is to "those who hear". It doesn't say to the Jews who hear or to the Gentiles who hear, but to those who hear. |

Hank: How blessed we are to be part of this forum. For among its members are those who know better than the translators themselves how the Bible should have been translated. Not only that, but there are those here who know better than the Divine Author and human authors of the Bible what should have been written in the Scriptures and how it should have been worded. Perhaps it goes back to the notion that since one is saved and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, whenever he reads the Bible, whatever comes to mind first must be the right interpretation. --kalos |

"If baptism were necessary for salvation, we would expect to find it stressed whenever the gospel is presented in Scripture. That is not the case, however. Peter mentioned baptism in his sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38). However, in his sermon from Solomon's portico in the Temple (Acts 3:12-26), Peter makes no reference to baptism, but links forgiveness of sin to repentance (3:19). If baptism is necessary for the forgiveness of sin, why didn't Peter say so in Acts 3? "Paul never made baptism any part of his gospel presentations. In 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Paul gives a concise summary of the gospel message he preached. There is no mention of baptism. In 1 Corinthians 1:17, Paul states that "Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel," thus clearly differentiating the gospel from baptism. That is difficult to understand if baptism is necessary for salvation. If baptism were part of the gospel itself, necessary for salvation, what good would it have done Paul to preach the gospel, but not baptize? No one would have been saved. Paul clearly understood baptism to be separate from the gospel, and hence in no way efficacious for salvation." ... Since the general teaching of the Bible is, as we have seen, that baptism and other forms of ritual are not necessary for salvation, no individual passage could teach otherwise." ____________________ (http://www.gty.org/IssuesandAnswers/archive/baptism.htm) |

In 1 Cor. 15:1-4, there is no mention of faith or belief? 1 Cor. 15:2 (KJV) By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have BELIEVED in vain. (Emphasis added.) When did I ever say repentance was necessary for salvation? "VI. THE CONDITION FOR SALVATION "A. The Condition. Salvation is conditioned solely on faith in Jesus Christ. Nearly 200 times faith, or belief, is stated as the single condition in the N.T. (John 1:12; Acts 16:31). That faith must be placed in Christ as one's substitute for and Saviour from sin. (...) "B. The False Additions to Faith. (...) "2. Baptism. Baptism is the visible testimony to one's salvation, but not a condition for it. Acts 2:38 should be translated, 'Repent and be baptized on the basis of the remission of sins.' Acts 22:16 teaches that baptism followed the arising, just as forgiveness followed the calling on the name of the Lord. The two parts of the verse should be kept distinct. Mark 16:16 is probably not a genuine part of Mark's Gospel" "3. Repentance. This is a valid condition for salvation when understood as a synonym for faith. It is a false addition to faith when understood as a prerequisite, requiring the cleansing of the life in order to be saved." ____________________ (p. 1950, Ryrie Study Bible, Moody Press, 1978). |

"Hell is a real place. It is not mere unconsciousness. It is not temporal. It is eternal torment." ____________________ If anyone reading this is a Jehovah's Witness, please understand that I am not against you as an individual. 'The Dead are Conscious After Death 'The wicked descend alive into Sheol ' Num. 16:30, "But if the Lord brings about an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they descend alive into Sheol, then you will understand that these men have spurned the Lord . . . 33So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly." 'Cast to outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth ' Matt. 8:12, "but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 'Those cast into the fire suffer consciously ' Matt. 13:41-42, "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” See also Matt. 13:50. 'Cast into a tormenting fire ' Rev. 14:9-11, "And another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or upon his hand, 10he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11"And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."” See also, Rev. 21:8. 'Hell is a place of eternal fire and punishment 'Unquenchable Fire Matt. 3:12 "And His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." 'Fiery Hell Matt. 5:22, "whoever shall say, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell." See also, Matt. 5:29,30. 'Fiery Hell Matt. 18:8-9, "And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the eternal fire. 9"And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into the fiery hell." 'Eternal Fire Matt. 25:41, "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels. 'Eternal Punishment ' Matt. 25:46, "And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." ' The word 'eternal' in both places is "aionios" which means 1)without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be; 2)without beginning; 3)without end, never to cease, everlasting. The word 'punishment' is the word kolasis and it means "to punish, with the implication of resulting severe suffering - 'to punish, punishment.'"(5) 'Eternal Fire ' Jude 7, "Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example, in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire." 'Lake of Fire ' Rev. 20:15, "And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." 'Conclusion ' Hell is a real place. It is not mere unconsciousness. It is not temporal. It is eternal torment. Perhaps that is why Jesus spoke more of hell than heaven and spent so much time warning people not to go there. After all, if people just stopped existing, why warn them? If it was temporal, they'd get out in a while. But if it were eternal and conscious, then the warning is strong. 'Jesus said, "And if your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30"And if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to go into hell," (Matt. 5:29-30).' ____________________ (www.carm.org/doctrine/hell.htm) |
