682 | why must Catholics "doubly" confess? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 57846
Emmaus: I know what you mean by "leap of logic" -- or illogic, as the case may be. Not a few of today's posts are impossible to answer because they are so incoherent. Even after reading them, a normal person has no clue as to their meaning. They are indecipherable -- unless one first goes through the looking glass with Alice and joins her in Wonderland. 683 | why must Catholics "doubly" confess? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 58447
Prov 17:28 Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent. (Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.) Prov 15:14 The mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on folly. Prov 20:3 Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, But any fool will quarrel. Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov 1:22 "How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing And fools hate knowledge? Prov 1:32 "For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them. Prov 3:35 The wise will inherit honor, But fools display dishonor. Prov 8:5 "O naive ones, understand prudence; And, O fools, understand wisdom. Prov 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish son is a grief to his mother. Prov 10:8 The wise of heart will receive commands, But a babbling fool will be ruined. Prov 10:10 He who winks the eye causes trouble, And a babbling fool will be ruined. Prov 10:14 Wise men store up knowledge, But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand. Prov 10:21 The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding. Prov 11:29 He who troubles his own house will inherit wind, And the foolish will be servant to the wisehearted. Prov 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel. Prov 12:16 A fool's anger is known at once, But a prudent man conceals dishonor. Prov 12:23 A prudent man conceals knowledge, But the heart of fools proclaims folly. Prov 13:16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, But a fool displays folly. Prov 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm. Prov 14:3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his back, But the lips of the wise will protect them. Prov 14:7 Leave the presence of a fool, Or you will not discern words of knowledge. Prov 14:8 The wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way, But the foolishness of fools is deceit. Prov 14:16 A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, But a fool is arrogant and careless. Prov 14:18 The naive inherit foolishness, But the sensible are crowned with knowledge. Prov 14:24 The crown of the wise is their riches, But the folly of fools is foolishness. Prov 15:2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly. Prov 15:7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge, But the hearts of fools are not so. Prov 16:22 Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, But the discipline of fools is folly. Prov 17:10 A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding Than a hundred blows into a fool. Prov 17:16 Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, When he has no sense? Prov 17:24 Wisdom is in the presence of the one who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth. Prov 18:2 A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own mind. Prov 18:7 A fool's mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul. Prov 19:1 Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity Than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool. Prov 23:9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words. Prov 26:4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him. Prov 26:5 Answer a fool as his folly deserves, That he not be wise in his own eyes. Prov 26:11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit Is a fool who repeats his folly. Prov 26:12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Prov 28:26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But he who walks wisely will be delivered. Prov 29:9 When a wise man has a controversy with a foolish man, The foolish man either rages or laughs, and there is no rest. Prov 29:20 Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. |

If husband number 2 divorces her OR dies. Searcher: "[if] the latter man...writes her a certificate of divorce...OR if the latter man dies," Deut. 24:2-3 (ESV) [2] and if she goes and becomes another man's wife, [3] and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, Also, as I said in my previous post, "I won't argue it one way or the other. I merely point out what the Law says." Grace to you, kalos |

New Creature: Thank you for an interesting quote by Tim LaHaye. I can't help but wonder: In what *context* did LaHaye say what he is quoted as saying? I.e., if I had a transcript of the quote, it would be interesting to read the page on which it appears, as well as the preceding and following pages. Standing alone, the one-sentence quote could be interpreted more than one way. Was LaHaye emphasizing the word *fact* or the word *fiction*? No criticism here. :-) Just wondering what LaHaye meant in context. Grace to you, kalos |

690 | LEFT BEHIND? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 60144
Whatever the Left Behind series may or may not neglect, it certainly does not neglect the gospel message. The gospel message in the Left Behind series is anything but subtle. The authors just come right out with it -- repeatedly. Many direct Bible quotations, some of them lengthy, appear throughout every book in the series. The authors just come right out with it and lay it on the line. The plan of salvation is clearly presented many times throughout the series. There is enough gospel in some of the books (I don't recall how many or which ones) to show anyone their need of a Savior, God's provision, and what is required to receive the salvation God offers. The accounts of not a few conversions are given in detail. The gospel message presented in the series is about as subtle as the world-wide earthquake prophesied in Revelation and described in detail in one of the books. Grace to you, kalos |

Deb: Not to dispute you, but after reading the book series twice and seeing the film three times, I must say: The order of things happening (the order of events in the books as compared to the Bible) is the LEAST factual element in the Left Behind series. :-) Grace to you, kalos |

692 | Should the Bible be taken literlly? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 61096
Timothy Paul: Grace and peace to you. None of the following is intended as harsh criticism of you. Instead, I write what I do to help you avoid certain problems in future postings. When quoting a published source in our postings, great care and attention to detail must be taken to avoid charges of copyright violation or plagiarism -- neither of which I accuse you of. I merely point these things out to you. First, "You must usually document the title, author, publisher name, and copyright year" (Lockman Foundation) of the material you are quoting. For example, it would have been better in your post had you placed the following information at the bottom of the page, enclosed in parentheses: (UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE: Interpretation, The Ryrie Study Bible, Charles Caldwell Ryrie, Moody, 1976, 1978) Second, If using direct quotes, by all means enclose them in quotation marks. Third, avoid editing the quoted material. The safest course is to quote it verbatim. For example, you attribute the content of your posting to the Ryrie Study Bible. Then you write: "These are suggestions only, towards basic concepts of interpretation..." The actual quote in Ryrie's own words is: "These suggestions are simply facets of the basic concept of plain interpretation." To paraphrase Ryrie's sentence as you did is to alter the meaning the author intended. Ryrie neither said nor meant that what he wrote were "suggestions only." What he said was: "These suggestions are simply facets of the basic concept of plain interpretation." "These suggestions are simply facets" has a meaning very different from "These are suggestions only." Again, Timothy Paul, please do not take this post as a rebuke. That is the furthest thing from my mind. I appreciate you and the post you submitted. You make excellent points there. My only motive is to spare you any problems that might arise from not giving proper attribution. ************* From the Lockman Foundation. "I want to include a quote from another work in my posting. Can I do that? "If you are not the original creator of the content you submit, you must not violate the rights of the copyright holder by submitting your content without the permission of the copyright holder. You must follow the instructions for quoting material as provided by the copyright holder. You must usually document the title, author, publisher name, and copyright year." (Lockman Foundation) Grace and peace be multiplied to you, kalos |

inmyheart: Everything that can be asked has already been answered. That being true, then why ask again? Further, if anyone takes offense at the forum sponsor's suggestion to search for your question before you ask it, then I suggest the offended person write directly to Lockman to register their complaint. It is not rudeness to suggest that people search for their question before asking. Let's not be so thin-skinned around here. Grace to you, kalos (a.k.a. inmyhead) |

Hank: I agree with every word of your Note. I have only one thing to add at this time. To post to the Forum is not a right; it is a privilege. To abuse it is to lose it. Some people start out not believing this and then find out the hard way that it is true and WILL be enforced as needed. kalos |

Inmyheart: No, I was not calling you thin-skinned. I truly intended no offense to you. What does 'inmyhead' refer to? It refers to the idea that feelings are good; thinking is also good. God gave us a heart; he also gave us a mind. "But the greatest of these is love" (1 Cor 13b). Grace and peace to you, kalos :-) |

700 | Is astrology forbidden? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 112469
Here is an excerpt from "In Touch" ministries.. [Repost of ID# 15707, submitted by Makarios.] "4. "Fate" determines many things in life. Stress, for example, is blamed for causing many things when in many cases, misplaced priorities and sin—both of which are subject to human will and human choices—are at the root of the problem. To believe in fate is to deny the omnipotence and omniscience of God. It is to say that there are moments in one's life in which God is not involved, does not know what is happening, or is not in control. Many people turn to astrology and horoscopes believing that they can find a clue there as to what will lie ahead for them on any given day; the Bible calls such practices idolatry because they put one's reliance on "fate" rather than on trust in God."
