401 | what is the best inter. of the bible | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 2460
I have found one English version of the Bible to be virtually incomprehensible. This is in no way intended as a put-down of the Roman Catholic Church, but the wording of the Confraternity Edition of the New Testament leaves me bewildered. On the other hand, anyone who can read the KJV with understanding could comprehend the old Douay-Rheims Catholic version of the Bible. I neither recommend nor not recommend this version; I merely point it out.

403 | What unmarried sexual acts are sinful? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 2491
I agree with you. In your posting you make many valid points. Not to dispute you, but to add to what you've said, I would just like to say: It has to be doctrine first, practice second, and then behavior. Knowing what the Bible teaches is necessary to right behavior. . . . All I am saying is that I agree with you that we should not endlessy quibble about words while there is a lost and dying world to be reached for Christ. On the other hand, what we believe most definitely affects how we live. |

404 | Did the Amplified come from Wescott and | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 2659
Your reply is a very scholarly, accurate, well-researched answer. May I add: Most of the differences between the various modern English versions do not arise from the differences in the Greek text(s) they use, but rather from their theory or guiding principle of interpretation, the two main ones being the 'literal' or the 'dynamic equivalence' approach.
405 | The Rapture, when will it be? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 2866
There is more than one interpretation of the doctrine of the rapture, as is the case with many Bible doctrines, especially when it comes to the doctrine of future things (prophecy). . . . The main differences of opinion concern the time of the rapture. The primary theories are: 1) Pretribulation rapture; 2) Midtribulation rapture; 3) Posttribulation rapture; 3) Partial rapture, which is sort of a Marine Corps rapture where only the perfect, only the brave, only the few are worthy to be raptured before the wrath of God is poured out; 5) Postmillenial rapture; and 6) Amillenialist rapture. Take your pick. (. . . There is also the new theory of No Rapture.) . . . For detailed explanations of the above views of the rapture, see the Ryrie Study Bible, Moody Press, in Ryrie's article A SYNOPSIS OF BIBLE DOCTRINE, The Doctrine of Future Things.
406 | Wise Debate? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3097
I agree with almost everything you wrote in your answer. As far as Lockman monitoring this Forum, I'm not so sure that would be a good idea. It may not be a bad idea either. I'm just saying that I am not convinced one way or the other. . . . I agree that the ideal Forum would be one in which people for the most part limited their postings to Bible questions that can be addressed with Bible answers. Like you, I don't care for all the arrogance, arguing, quibbling, hairsplitting over every jot and tittle, everyone calling everyone else everything from heretic to apostate, etc. I usually don't take the time to read the theological, hypothetical, philosophical, speculative debates that go on and on with insufficient Scripture to support what the authors assert. . . . The type of questions that I feel are inappropiate to this Forum and its format are those that want an explanation for WHY God did this or that? Is God fair? Does this passage really mean what it says? Where did Cain get his wife? (I would love, just once, to answer this question by asking the questioner: "More importantly, where did YOU get YOUR wife?") Also inappropriate are questions asking someone to explain the unexplainable; questions like Where is the garden of Eden?; Is there intelligent life on earth?; Is there life after high school?; as well as questions that clearly ask for a speculative answer, i.e. ones where everybody knows the Scripture is silent on the subject. . . . In general, I try to support my answers with relevant and clear passages of Scripture. When giving my opinion I try to remember to come right out and label it as my opinion, not as doctrine or dogma. Where the Bible is silent on a subject, I prefer to remain silent, too, unless known archaeological, medical, historic or cultural *evidence* can shed some light on the question. Every man has a right to his own opinion, but no man has the right to be wrong. . . . Every man has a right to an opinion, but I do not come to the Forum either to look for or to post questions and comments unsubstantiated by Scripture. Or to look for those comments that can only quote one verse, usually out of context, to support the author's answer. Or those postings that shed no light on the subject, but instead quibble over the other person's wording of his question or comment. When people build a doctrine based on one word or one punctuation mark in one sentence, I'm just not interested. I don't have time for that. (See Deut 29:29.) . . . Thank you, EdB, for a very thoughtful and well-written answer. God bless. --JVH0212 |

407 | Is God responsible for evil? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3111
In general, I agree with the essence of your answer, that God is NOT responsible for evil. I might add: I know the Bible clearly teaches both the sovereignty of God and the limited freewill of man. But I do hope you're not implying that God's sovereignty ends where man's freewill begins. The sovereignty of God never ends. (I do not say that you mean to imply the above, I am just expressing my concern.)
408 | Did you know we did it? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3120
I agree with you: who knows but that someone will come to Christ for salvation after reading something here that helped him? I would also say, it might be that someone who sifts through all the questions and comments herein presented and finds a reasonable answer will then be equipped to help point some precious soul to Christ. . . . And yes, you may have purple Welch's. Your unlimited, unhindered, unassailable freewill carries with it the right to choose purple grape juice over white. However, some of us, being mere puppets, have been predestined to drink white Welch's only. |

410 | What unmarried sexual acts are sinful? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3314
Dear forrest: Why are so many threatened by the use of the word "doctrine", which is merely another word for "teaching"? All scripture is indeed "profitable for doctrine" (KJV). . . . Thank you for the philosophical essay on Truth. But I was never speaking of the precepts or doctrine of men. I was speaking only of sound Bible doctrine which IS inspired of God and the meaning of which can be determined. To suggest that there is some contradiction or conflict between sound Bible doctrine and Christ is misleading. The Bible (including its sound doctrine) is the Written Word. Christ is the Living Word. Therefore, I see no conflict between Christ, the Living Word, and the Bible, the Written Word. So I still say belief comes first and then behavior. I still say WHAT, as well as Whom, we believe greatly impacts the way we live. It was not my intention to quibble over words, but to state a plain fact in plain English. |

411 | What unmarried sexual acts are sinful? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3334
I see we are still quibbling over words, in that we do not agree on what "doctrine" is. It seems you are saying that the Bible CONTAINS doctrine, which may or may not be truth, depending on one's own subjective understanding of it. I am saying that the Bible IS doctrine and as such IS truth. It may be amusing to quarrel over words, definitions, and philosophies, but I have neither the time nor the inclination to do so. Sir, I do not question the sincerity of your heart nor your desire for truth. What I write here is definitely not an assessment of your character or sincerity, but of your writings, as I understand them. Take care. --JVH0212 |

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement, "We must distiguish our understanding from the actual reality of the truth itself." I do understand your points and the gist of your writings on this topic. I see by your writings that you love the Lord and live to please Him. I confess that I am sometimes impatient and harsh sounding, taking offense where none was intended. Forgive me. All of the warnings you give re head knowledge vs. heart knowledge (experience) are timely and appropriate to believers in general. Thank you for your sincere, conscientious postings. Keep on studying the written Word and getting to know the living word more and more. Sounds like you have more than a good start already. Your brother in the Lord, JVH0212

414 | Will we see God's face? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3423
I sincerely thank you for your reply. However, I must point out: Neither the verse you quote nor the entire paragraph in which it is found (vv. 11-12) makes any mention of God. I have never heard anyone quote 1 Cor 13:12 to mean that we will see God's face in heaven.

Dear Nolan: What an uplifting reply! What a beautiful picture of heaven you paint! I may just read your posting to my Sunday School class. This is a keeper. Thanks for sharing your heartfelt feelings about heaven. (And you get an A plus for your Scripture references. (smile)) Your brother in the Lord, JVH0212

Thank you for your note, Nolan. God bless you in all your service to Him. I would be very interested in reading your list of Bible versions to avoid. What an excellent idea for a list. 419 | What is the Holy Spirit? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 3727
The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Spirit is God. . . . To say that God is Himself shows a real grasp of the obvious. Not a bad definition of Jesus. How about giving us a definition of "Jesus Christ"? The Holy Spirit is a person -- not an it, not a what, not merely an influence -- but a PERSON. |

That was some clarification of the Holy Spirit. Only 3 "things" in heaven, the Father, the son and the angles? And maybe satan? My only question is: For your opinion could you cite chapter and verse please? CHAPTER AND VERSE.
