482 | Question: Why? Answer: Because. | Ps 115:2 | kalos | 170849
Why? Why? Why? Question: Why? Answer: Because. Ps 115:2 Why should the Gentiles say, "So where is their God?" Pr 5:20 For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, And be embraced in the arms of a seductress? Pr 17:16 Why is there in the hand of a fool the purchase price of wisdom, Since he has no heart for it? Pr 22:27 If you have nothing with which to pay, Why should he take away your bed from under you? Ec 2:15 So I said in my heart, "As it happens to the fool, It also happens to me, And why was I then more wise?" Then I said in my heart, "This also is vanity." Ec 5:6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands? Ec 7:10 Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not inquire wisely concerning this. Ec 7:16 Do not be overly righteous, Nor be overly wise: Why should you destroy yourself? Ec 7:17 Do not be overly wicked, Nor be foolish: Why should you die before your time? |

Robin Hass: It would not be unheard of for two Pentecostals or two Baptists or two whatevers to disagree over the interpretation of a given word, phrase or verse. And a King James Only person would tell you that the original Greek is wrong; that the only perfect Bible is the KJV. That it is more perfect than the original language texts from which it was translated. Some people can't even agree on the meaning of English words, let alone Greek or Hebrew ones. Also, there are some people who believe that while the "experts" are fallible, somehow they themselves are infallible. No one is automatically right -- no one except the self-appointed Lone Ranger internet Bible experts (a claim I do not make for myself). Often when one person does not agree with another it isn't because he can't; it's because he won't. This may not be the answer you were looking for, but this is what came to mind when I considered your question. I'm not thinking or implying that any of this is true of you. Just stating my observations. Grace to you, Kalos |

Psalm 139: Thanks for sharing about the man at the Christian bookstore that helped you to be grounded in the Word. I grew up in the 1950s in a town with a population of 100,000 and, as far as I know, there was only one Christian bookstore in the whole town back then. I never even saw a study Bible (or knew they existed) and was never inside a Bible bookstore (or knew they existed) until I was 13 years old. It was in the front room of someone's house. It was to be another 12 years before I owned my first study Bible, the one that had made such an impression on me when I was 13 -- the Scofield Reference Bible. Now my most-often-used (daily since 1997) study Bible is the one by John MacArthur. Grace to you, Kalos |

Psalm139:13: Once again you have provided us with much good, helpful information, which I greatly appreciate. I envy you living near so many good churches and Christian bookstores. I live approximately halfway between St. Louis, Missouri and Springfield, Illinois. These two cities have fine Bible bookstores, but there are none located between the two cities. The stores where I regularly browse and purchase Bibles and books are Christianbook.com and Amazon.com. Not to boast (2 Cor. 11:17), but when I said in my previous post that most of the time "the reverse is true" I meant it literally. I could and have answered the clerks' questions about various translations and editions of the Bible. Nineteen times out of 20 I am older than the store clerks and have read more translations, studied more years, and owned more Bible editions, versions, and reference books than the clerks. Also not to boast, but when I worked at Waldenbooks in the 1970s I was asked by the manager for my recommendations for the Bible section of this new store. The first modern (post-1611 A.D.) version I bought and used regularly was the New American Standard Bible. I went to the bookstore one day in search of a copy of the American Standard Version (1901) only to learn that it was difficult to obtain one. Based on my familiarity with and the reputation of the ASV, I bought the NASB. It was in the single-column format, with side column references, including the translators' notes, cross references, and literal and alternate renderings of words and phrases. I was not dissapointed by the NASB. I was 26 years old when I bought my first one. I have continued to use the NASB (in many editions) for the past 35 years. In my personal library I have approximately 27 different Bible versions, various study Bibles, and a basic collection of Bible reference books, e.g. Vine's, Strong's, Baker's Theological Dictionary, Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, and others. I plan to purchase an interlinear Greek-English NT this summer. As for my pastor, I respect his teaching and judgment. He is well trained in the doctrines of his denomination. But I have been reading the Bible since before he was born and studying it since he was 6 years old. Having said all that, I do appreciate your recommendations and those of others here on the forum. I have often found them to be helpful. Grace to you, Kalos |

Dnewland: I'm not sure what you're getting at. If your point is that you are against abortion, the vast majority of forum members already agree with you. If your point is that the parts of the NT written by Paul are any less inspired than the words of Jesus, then you are mistaken. If your point is that the mission of the church, the body of Christ, is to overthrow the government, then I must have missed something when I read the NT. If your point is that you choose not to pay your income tax, then have at it. Let us know how that comes out. If you're willing to go to prison for non-payment of income tax, go ahead. If not, then it's all talk. Grace to you, Kalos |

488 | what are the gifts of the God | 1 Cor 13:2 | kalos | 170782
Love is not a gift of the Spirit. Love is the fruit of the Spirit. NASB Galatians 5:22 But THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS LOVE, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ESV 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. In which NT verse is love listed as one of the gifts of the Spirit? Love is not a gift of the Spirit. Love is the fruit of the Spirit. |

491 | Who hath believed our report? | Is 53:1 | kalos | 170674
The Suffering Servant 1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. 492 | "to keep the feast of tabernacles" | Zech 14:16 | kalos | 170636
Ocelot: No, I am not saying that we should still be keeping those feasts (emphasis on the words "I" and "should"). First, I am not saying anything. I merely quote John MacArthur, whom I believe to be correct. Second, I'm not saying that we SHOULD be keeping the feasts, only that they WILL be kept in the Millenium. "In addition to the Feast of Tabernacles, two other feasts will be celebrated in the Millennium, i.e., 1) Feast of the New Year (Ezek. 45:18-20) and 2) Passover (Ezek. 45:21-25)" (MacArthur Study Bible) Like you, I, too, have wondered about whether we should be keeping those feasts now. I've wondered, but I don't know enough about it to know the answer. If anyone has biblically-based information, I would be glad to read and consider it. (In this case, verses lifted out of context are not the best source of information. Verses quoted in context are welcome.) Grace to you, Kalos |

493 | "to keep the feast of tabernacles" | Zech 14:16 | kalos | 170631
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. Zechariah 14:16 '14:16 Feast of Tabernacles. The historical background can be found in Lev. 23:33-36; Num. 29:12-38; Deut 16:13-17. In addition to the Feast of Tabernacles, two other feasts will be celebrated in the Millennium, i.e., 1) Feast of the New Year (Ezek. 45:18-20) and 2) Passover (Ezek. 45:21-25). These feasts were no more efficacious (effective) than were the feasts of the Mosaic era or the Lord's Supper in the church age. They all provided a symbolic anticipation or remembrance of Christ's unique and once-for-all sacrifice at Calvary.' (Source: MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997) |

Psalm139:13: 'Check with your local Christian bookstore’s “Bible person” ask his opinion as his knowledge will be more diverse and better able to assist you...' In a perfect world this would be true everywhere. In my experience in the real world the reverse is usually true. :-) In the real world I consider myself blessed if the bookstore clerk can find a particular Bible and tell me how much it costs. In this instance, you have given good advice regarding a specific topic of which I am in total ignorance -- using USB Ports. May I add that another very good source of product information is amazon.com? Anyone who knows the name of a particular product can go to amazon.com and read customer reviews of that product. I may not agree with every review, but it is often helpful to consider why a customer recommends or does not recommend a certain product. You will often find more detailed information about a product in the customers' reviews than you will in the manufacturer's description. Again, my thanks to you for providing information on a subject about which I know nothing -- using USB Ports. Grace to you, Kalos |

'Do pets/animals have souls?' ____________________ "Animals are not made in the image and likeness of God." ____________________ (Source: www.gotquestions.org/ pets-heaven.html) 'Answer: The Bible does not give any specific teaching on whether pets / animals have “souls” or whether pets / animals will be in heaven. However, we can take some general Scriptural principles and shed some light on the subject. The Bible states that both man (Genesis 2:7) and animals (Genesis 1:30; 6:17; 7:15,22) have the breath of life. The primary difference between human beings and animals is that man is made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Animals are not made in the image and likeness of God. Being made in the image and likeness of God means that human beings are like God, capable of spirituality, with mind, emotion, and will - and - have an aspect of being that continues after death. If pets / animals do have a “soul” or immaterial aspect, it must therefore be of a different and lesser "quality." This difference probably means that pet / animal “souls” do not carry on after death. ...' To read more go to: www.gotquestions.org/ pets-heaven.html |

500 | The Kenosis of Christ | Phil 2:7 | kalos | 170383
THE KENOSIS OF CHRIST Statement: CP1207 (Source: www.equip.org/free/CP1207.htm) 'It’s popular today to say that Jesus in the Incarnation was fully man, but certainly not fully God. In discussing the doctrine of the Incarnation (God the Son in human flesh), Philippians 2:7 says that Jesus “emptied himself.” Does this mean that Jesus was not 100 percent God as well as 100 percent man? 'While historic Christianity has always affirmed that Jesus Christ was both fully God and fully man, some have argued that in order for Jesus to have been truly human He must have divested Himself of certain divine attributes. In fact, those who affirm this very novel view nearly always appeal to Philippians 2:5-7. Which, by the way, says, “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but he emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.” The words “emptied Himself” are interpreted by a growing number of people today to mean that Christ actually laid aside certain divine attributes. But is this correct? Well as a matter of fact, it’s not. 'To say that Jesus surrendered even one divine attribute is to say that Jesus is less than God, and therefore not God at all! See, if God is deprived of even one attribute, then He is not fully deity. Of course references to his deity abound in Scripture (John 1:1; 20:28; Rom. 9:5; Col. 2:9; Tit. 2:13; Heb. 1:8). And by the way, this is not only affirmed by the Bible, it’s clearly affirmed by the creeds. 'Of course the question is asked: If Jesus didn’t give up His deity, then what did Christ empty Himself of? Well the context indicates very clearly that Jesus veiled His glory as a sign of his humility. He voluntarily makes Himself of no reputation. He sets aside His high position and waves His divine prerogatives because He loves us. But while Christ surrenders His divine glory, he does not surrender His divine attributes.'
