Jehovah's Witnesses in a Nutshell 'According to Jehovah's Witness' theology, God is a single person, not a Trinity (../doctrine/trinity.htm), who does not know all things and is not everywhere. He first created Michael the Archangel through whom He created all "other things," including the universe, the earth, Adam and Eve, etc. This creative work took God 42,000 years. At one point, The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society taught that God ruled the universe from somewhere in the Pleiades star system. They have since modified this to say that the "Pleiades can no longer be considered the center of the universe and it would be unwise for us to try to fix God's throne as being at a particular spot in the universe." Such changes and even contradictions in teaching (contradictions.htm) are frequent in the Watchtower organization and when a doctrine changes, they tell their followers that the light of truth is getting brighter. 'After Adam sinned, the paradise which God had created for them, was ruined. So, God instituted a system of redemption which was revealed in the Bible and would ultimately lead to the crucifixion of Jesus the messiah. But, in the meantime, God needed to have a visible, theocratic organization on earth to accurately represent Him. Throughout history, this true organization had a remnant of faithful Jehovah's Witnesses (Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, etc.) but it wasn't until the late 1800's that Charles Taze Russell formerly began what is now known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society which is run out of Brooklyn, New York. This organization claims to be the only true channel of God's truth on earth today and that it alone can properly interpret God's word since it is the angel directed, prophet of God on earth. 'When it came time for the savior to be born, Michael the Archangel became a human, in the form of Jesus. Jesus grew and kept all the laws of God and never sinned. Finally, when Jesus died, it was not on a cross, but on a torture stake, where he bore the sins of mankind -- but this did not include Adam's sins. Jesus rose from the dead as a spirit, not physically (his body was dissolved and taken by God) and during his visitations to people on earth, he manifested a temporary physical body for them to see and touch. Thus began the true Christian church of Jehovah's followers. 'Throughout history there have been faithful Jehovah's witnesses who have managed to keep The Truth in spite of the "demonic" doctrine of Trinitarianism that has permeated the Christian church in "Christendom." Christendom is filled with pastors who are antichrists, in churches run by Satan, and who support the earthly governments which are all of the devil. In other words, all of Christianity is false and only the Jehovah's Witness "theocratic" organization lead by several men in Brooklyn, New York, is true. 'In the late 1800's, a young man of 18 years, by the name of Charles Taze Russell, organized a Bible class in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1879 he sought to popularize his ideas on doctrine so he co-published The Herald of the Morning magazine with its founder, N. H. Barbour and by 1884 Russell controlled the publication and renamed it The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah's Kingdom, and founded Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society (now known as the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society). Russell served as the teacher and guide for the organization which taught that Jesus returned invisibly in 1914 and is now reigning in heaven. When Jesus finally returns physical to earth, which will happen at the time of the Battle of Armageddon, He will set up his earthly 1000 year kingdom. During this 1000 year period, people will be resurrected and have a second chance to receive eternal salvation by following the principles of Jehovah's Organization on earth known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. After the millennium, those who reject God and His organization will be annihilated; that is, they will cease to exist. The rest of the Jehovah's Witness who have faithfully followed God's organization on earth will be saved from eternal annihilation and reside forever on Paradise earth. Heaven, however, is a place for a special group of 144,000 Jehovah's Witnesses -- the only ones who are "born again" and who alone are allowed to take communion in their annual communion service. These are the ones who have "immortal life," all other Witnesses have "everlasting life." Those with immortal life do not have resurrected bodies. They have "spirit bodies." Those on Paradise Earth have everlasting life and consists of a resurrected body that must be maintained through eating, rest, etc.' ____________________ Source: www.carm.org/witnesses.htm Other websites on the Jehovah's Witnesses: Out of Darkness (www.outofdarkness.org/) Watchers of the Watchtower World (www.freeminds.org/) |

Is the Jehovah's Witness religion Christian? (www.carm.org/jw/cult.htm) 'The answer to the question is, "No. It is not Christian." Like all non-Christian cults, the Jehovah's Witness organization distorts the essential doctrines of Christianity. It denies the deity of Christ, His physical resurrection, and salvation by grace. This alone makes it non-Christian. To support its erring doctrines, the Watchtower organization (which is the author and teacher of all official Jehovah's Witness theology), has even altered the Bible to make it agree with its changing and non-Christian teachings. Typical with cults that use the Bible to support its position is a host of interpretive errors: 'Taking verses out of their immediate context. 'Refusing to read verses in the entire biblical context. 'Inserting their theological presuppositions into the text. 'Altering the Biblical text to suit their needs. 'Latching onto one verse to interpret a host of others. 'Changing the meanings of words. 'Proclaiming some passages to be figurative when they contradict their doctrines. 'Adding to the Word of God. 'Additionally, the Jehovah's Witness organization requires of its members regular weekly attendance at their "Bible Study" meetings where they are repeatedly indoctrinated with anti-Christian teachings. This is done by reading the Watchtower magazine, following along with what it says, reading the questions it asks, and reciting the answers it gives. In other words, the Watchtower Organization carefully trains its members to let the Organization do their thinking for them. For confirmation of this, please read Does the Watchtower organization control the JW's thinking? 'The Witnesses are told they will be persecuted when they go door to door teaching their doctrines. They are further told that this is simply the enemy fighting against the God's organization because they are in "the truth." So, when someone disagrees with them, they are conditioned to reflect on what the Watchtower has told them. They then feel confirmed in being in God's true organization on earth (like all cults claim). They are strongly encouraged to have friends and acquaintances that are only JW’s, thereby keeping outside examination to a minimum. They are told to shun those who leave their group, that way, there is no way to see why someone has left and no way to find out that they are in error from those who have found the truth in Christ. They are conditioned to shy away from any real biblically knowledgeable person. An example of this is frequently found on the Internet. I was once banned from a Jehovah's Witness chat room after I not only answered their objections to the Trinity and deity of Christ, but challenged them in return. Subsequently, my name was passed around to all other Jehovah's Witness rooms where I was banned from them as well. This is a frequent occurrence on the Internet where the Jehovah's Witnesses are alive and well. It is obvious that critical examination of their doctrines is not encouraged by the Watchtower Organization. 'The Jehovah's Witnesses consider themselves to be Christians because they believe they are serving the true and living God. Like many cults, they think they are the only true church on earth. Yet, they deny the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the personhood of the Holy Spirit, Jesus' physical resurrection, and salvation by grace through faith. 'The Jehovah's Witnesses are discouraged from looking into Jehovah's Witness history or old Watchtower literature which is replete with contradictions, altered doctrines, and false prophecies. Instead, they are indoctrinated repeatedly against basic Christian doctrines (Trinity, deity of Christ, etc) and into the notion that they alone are the true servants of God and that all others are either in "Christendom" or simply unbelievers. 'Primarily, the Jehovah's Witness organization is a mind control organization that uses its people to pass out literature and send in "donations" to the headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. "Thus the Bible is an organizational book and belongs to the Christian congregation as an organization, not to individuals, regardless of how sincerely they may believe that they can interpret the Bible." The Watchtower, Oct. 1, 1967. p. 587. 'The Watchtower organization of the Jehovah's Witnesses is a non-Christian organization that uses its people to promulgate false doctrines, sell a multitudinous amount of literature, and expand its grip into the lives of its members and their families. 'It is a non-Christian cult.' ____________________ www.carm.org/jw/cult.htm |

It is true that the Bible doesn't say much about Paul's appearance. Moreover, if the Bible says that Paul had migraine headaches, epilepsy, or a speech disability, please tell us the book, chapter, and verse where it plainly and clearly says that. 2 Corinthians 12:7 does not say Paul had "thorns" (plural) in the flesh. It says he was given "a thorn" (singular) in the flesh. 2 Corinthians 12 does not tell us what Paul's thorn (singular) in the flesh was. For you to assert that it was migraine headaches or epilepsy or a speech disability is to go beyond what is written in 2 Corinthians 12. 2 Cor. 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. |

Foy E. Wallace Jr., the Father of Modern Preterism? 'The Road Back to Preterism 'A Brief History of Eschatology and the Church 'By Kurt M. Simmons 'If there is a single individual that can be credited as the father of modern Preterism it is the Church of Christ preacher, evangelist, author and editor, Foy E. Wallace Jr. Wallace was a leading figure in the Churches of Christ coming out of the 1930s. A superb speaker, able debater, and writer, he quickly rose to national prominence in the Churches of Christ, holding numerous meetings across the U.S. each year. Wallace also served as editor of the Gospel Advocate (Nashville), a leading monthly publication within the Churches of Christ. In his role as editor, writer, and preacher, Wallace would help define the issues and establish the norms that would shape the church for the next fifty years. 'One of Wallace’s contributions toward the modern Preterist movement was his attack upon Dispensationalism (Premillennialism). Premillennialism threatened to enter the Churches of Christ in the early twentieth century through Robert H. Boll, a prominent preacher, who also served as editor of the Gospel Advocate. Boll became enamored with the Premillennialism of Charles Taze Russell, founder of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and began writing Premillennialist articles for the Gospel Advocate (circa 1910). Boll was forced to resign, but continued to teach and disseminate Premillennialist doctrine within the church, gaining a following. 'The Premillennial movement within the churches of Christ was destroyed primarily by Foy Wallace Jr. during his four year (1930-1934) tenure as editor of the Gospel Advocate and in two debates with Charles Neal. The first Wallace-Neal debate was held in Winchester, KY., Jan. 2-6, 1933, and was later published in book form. Neal affirmed "The Bible clearly teaches that after the second coming of Christ and before the final resurrection and judgment, there will be an age or dispensation of one thousand years during which Christ will reign on the earth." Wallace also started a publication entitled the Bible Banner to refute Premillennnial doctrine and would publish God’s Prophetic Word (1946, revised 1960), a volume of several hundred pages, which today remains one of the most thorough treatments exposing Premillennial errors. Central to Wallace's refutation of Premillennialism was proof of the restoration of the Davidic throne and kingdom in Christ beginning with his ascension. 'The other side of Wallace’s contribution to the modern Preterist movement was his commentary on Revelation, published in 1966. Wallace devoted forty-five pages to defending the early date for composition of Revelation, and demonstrated throughout that Revelation’s major theme was the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Although Wallace’s commentary was merely partial Preterist, seeing in Revelation twenty’s millennia imagery extending beyond the first century and into the indefinite future, it remains a favorite in Preterist circles today. 'Wallace’s efforts to establish the historical, first century context of Revelation and the fulfilled nature of the Davidic kingdom and throne in Christ’s church paved the way for later generations in the Church of Christ to arrive at the full Preterist position...' Mark: I have heard two old sayings about commentaries. I think there is truth in both of them. They are: The best commentary is a good translation. The Bible is its own best commentary. "The best commentary is a good translation." Many times when I have looked up a difficult verse in another translation, especially the Amplified and the NLT, I found my question answered and understood the verse well enough to continue reading. "The Bible is its own best commentary." John MacArthur writes: "One of the basic principles of biblical interpretation is the analogia scriptura, the analogy of Scripture. In other words, we must compare Scripture with Scripture in order to understand its full and proper sense. And since the Bible doesn't contradict itself, any interpretation of a specific passage that contradicts the general teaching of the Bible is to be rejected." Grace to you, Kalos |

Tim: On the one hand, it's like I heard on Christian radio (David Jeremiah): "If you are the only one who believes something in the Bible, then you don't want to go around talking about it." I.e., if you are the only one who believes a certain thing -- a certain interpretaion. ____________________ "Just because I studied the Word and arrived at a conclusion does not mean that it is correct." ____________________ 'Do my conclusions agree or disagree with related areas of scripture and others who have studied the passage? (From the article "Biblical Interpretation" at Christian Apologetcis and Research Ministry) '...I’ve already presented other verses which seem to agree with my conclusion. However, it is not in agreement with all of the commentaries I’ve read on this verse. At this point I would need to present my conclusion to others to see what they think. Just because I studied the Word and arrived at a conclusion does not mean that it is correct. But it doesn’t mean it is wrong either. 'By consulting with others, by examining the word again, and by seeking God and his illumination, I can only hope to arrive at the best possible conclusion about a passage...' (To read more, see "Biblical Interpretation" at: www.carm.org/bible/interpret.htm) 1 John 2:27 '"You have no need for anyone to teach you." Both "you's" are plural and refer to the believing community as a whole; there is no ground here for a hyper-individualistic understanding of the Gospel wherein the views of other believers and the gathering of believers together are considered unimportant' (Jewish New Testament Commentary, David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., 1992). On the other hand, going to SCRIPTURE FIRST and the commentators only second is a principle with which I agree 100 percent. 432 | Feel-good faith that has no convictions | 2 Tim 4:3 | kalos | 172686
Feel-good faith that has no convictions ____________________ "The God we worship today no longer resembles the God of the Bible." ____________________ 'Final conclusion: Even with the proliferation of Bibles today, Christians are reading their Bibles less and less. I believe the evangelical church has only 50 years of life left. 50 years left of evangelicalism because of marginalization of the Word of God. We need another Reformation! 'The enemy of the gospel now is not religious hierarchy but moral anarchy, not tradition but entertainment. The enemy of the gospel is Protestantism run amock; it is an anti-intellectual, anti-knowledge, feel-good faith that has no content and no convictions. Part of the communal repentance that is needed is a repentance about the text. 'And even more importantly, there must be a repentance with regard to Christ our Lord. Just as the Bible has been marginalized, Jesus Christ has been "buddy-ized" His transcendence and majesty are only winked at, as we turn him into the genie in the bottle, beseeching God for more conveniences, more luxury, less hassle, and a life without worries or lack of comfort. 'He no longer wears the face that the apostles recognized. Or, as Erasmus remarked, "When you read the Greek New Testament, you can see the face of Jesus more clearly than if you were one of his disciples!" A bit of hyperbole, but the point is worth underscoring: The God we worship today no longer resembles the God of the Bible. Unless we return to him through a reading and digesting of the scriptures through a commitment to the text, the evangelical church will become irrelevant, useless, dead.' ____________________ www.bible.org/page.asp?page_idequals1825 (Replace the word equals with the equals sign.) |

433 | T or F? God is a gentleman. | Ps 103:19 | kalos | 172581
T or F? "God is a gentleman. He won't tamper with your free will." 'Sloppy Slogans' 'There's nothing wrong with catchy ways of expressing a conclusion based on careful consideration. In fact, Jesus was a master at using short, pithy statements (known as aphorisms) to drive a point home. Sloganeering in the hands of the unskilled, though, tends to be a sloppy business. The kernel of truth is lost beneath a pile of misleading chaff. 'Many slogans are not answers, but clever dismissals. No careful work has been done to justify the verdict. Let me explain. 'One truism I've heard regarding the problem of God's sovereignty versus man's freedom goes something like this: "God is a gentleman. He won't tamper with your free will." The statement has a ring of truth to it, and as a slogan it has populist appeal. Yet, more often than not, the statement is like a roof hanging in mid-air; the more demanding foundational work needed to support it simply has not been done. 'For example, this maxim is vulnerable to a couple of simple observations. First, the Scripture doesn't make this particular claim about human freedom. It doesn't even imply that God is a gentleman who won't interfere with our lives. To the contrary, there are a number of biblical examples that indicate just the opposite. 'Take Paul on the road to Damascus, for instance. He was in total rebellion against God. He dragged Christian men, women, and children into prison and even presided over executions. Paul was, in his human will, an enemy to the cross of Christ. So God knocked him off his horse on the Damascus Road, blinded him, then spoke to him like thunder from the sky (Acts 9:3-7). Was God tampering? It looks like it. 'Consider poor Nebuchadnezzar. God had him chewing grass with the cows in the fields of Babylon for three years until he finally looked heavenward, came to his senses, and gave God the glory (Daniel 4:28-37). Was there any divine pressure here? Seems like it to me.' ____________________ Faith and Philosophy by Gregory Koukl. To read more go to: (www.str.org) |

434 | The Law of Moses has been abrogated | Matt 5:17 | kalos | 172530
'"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill." Matthew 5:17 'Replacement theology likewise understands that Yeshua at his first coming fulfilled the Torah, so that we don't have to do so (the logic leading to this conclusion is unclear);... 'But the word usually translated "fulfill", Greek pleroo, does not necessarily convey this specific sense. Rather, it is a very common word which simply means "fill", "fill up", "make full", as in filling a cup or a hole. It should be evident that the actual meaning is as rendered in the Jewish New Testament: "Don't think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete" -- that is, to "make full" the meaning of what the Torah and the ethical demands of the Prophets require. In fact, this verse, so understood, states the theme of the entire Sermon on the Mount -- in which six times the Messiah says, "you have heard of old time" the incomplete meaning or a distortion, "but I say to you" the complete, full spiritual sense to be understood and obeyed.' Mark: I do not equate praying in a tongue with "a private prayer language." When I hear the term "private prayer language" I think of each person having his own special, unique language ("tongue") in which to pray. It is not praying in a tongue that I do not find in Scripture. What I do not find is a special, unique language that differs from one person to the next. I may be misunderstanding the term "private prayer language." But since the term is neither used nor defined in Scripture, I have no way of knowing if I am misdefining it. I do believe that "praying in a tongue" was and still is a biblically valid practice. Grace to you, Kalos |

437 | Acts 2:2 | 1 Cor 14:6 | kalos | 172382
As for a private prayer language, I don't see this taught anywhere in the 66 books of the Bible. I've heard about a prayer language all my life, but I suspect that the idea comes from interpreting people's experiences rather than a clear verse of Scripture. We never prove the validity of the Bible by experience; we test and examine experience in light of the Bible. And since there is no mention of the word "tongues" in Acts 4, John 14, Romans 8, the book of Jude or James 3:8, I do not see how anyone could find the doctrine of a prayer language in any of these passages. I have no need that anyone explain to me what a prayer language is. As I said, I'm familiar with the concept, having heard of it my whole life. What I am not familiar with is any Scripture to back it up. Grace to you, Kalos |

439 | "The endurance...is physical survival." | Matt 10:22 | kalos | 172202
"The endurance...is physical survival." ____________________ 'This is not a reference to eternal salvation from sin, but rather the deliverance of survivors at the end of the tribulation...Many will not endure to the end in that they will be martyred for their faith as described in Revelation 7:9-17.' ____________________ "You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved." Matthew 10:22 NASB 'It is important to remember that the use of words like “save” and “salvation” must be understood in their context. “Saved” often does not mean saved from sin or saved in the sense of receiving eternal life. It may simply refer so some form of deliverance or survival. 'As one considers Matthew 10:22, it is vital to bear in mind the context which is Messianic and in keeping with the Old Testament calendar of events... 'In view of Matthew 10:23, “before the Son of Man comes,” Christ is looking forward past the church age to the days of the Tribulation, the time of Jacob’s trouble, when the gospel will be carried throughout the entire world before Jesus Christ returns in power and glory to establish His kingdom on the earth (Matthew 24:14). In the similar context using similar words, Matthew 24:8-31 (especially 24:13), the future Great Tribulation and the Second Advent are in view. As there, it would seem clear that the “coming of the Son of man” is eschatological here also. In keeping with their expectations from the Old Testament, such would have been more readily understood by the disciples. 'The endurance, then, is physical survival. While many will be martyred, a few will make it to the end. Those who endure through the awful events of the tribulation will be alive or delivered by Messiah when he returns to earth. This is not a reference to eternal salvation from sin, but rather the deliverance of survivors at the end of the tribulation as stated in Romans 11:26, where the Deliverer will save the nation Israel from its persecutors. Many will not endure to the end in that they will be martyred for their faith as described in Revelation 7:9-17.' (http://www.bible.org/) Matt 10:22. Jeff: Has it ever happened that I believed I had a strong scriptural argument, only to run into a question that I couldn't answer? Yes, it has. And it always turned out to be a good thing in the end. The unexpected objections and counter-arguments caused me to return to the scriptures, prayerfully and diligently searching until I was prepared to give an answer in return. I have learned much at these times. It has happened much more on this forum that it ever did off the forum. Five years ago I came to the forum with ideas I had learned from preachers and teachers over the years. Sometimes I had to adjust what I believed until it lined up with what the Word of God said and taught. There have also been times when I found out I was just plain wrong about this or that teaching. When that happened I appreciated the person who had challenged me and pointed me in the right direction. I don't want to believe something that isn't true. So it really is a joy to me when I receive gentle and loving correction. For example, Chuck B. came to the forum several years ago teaching a certain doctrine. At first I was offended and wouldn't even consider his arguments, because his teaching was contrary to what I had always been taught on this issue. Then I got to thinking it over, reading his posts carefully. I began to research the subject with Chuck B.'s help and I found out I was wrong. How did I feel? I felt good that the truth had been shown to me. I've learned so much from so many forum members as well as from the research I've done to make sure I give accurate, scriptural answers to the questions I reply to. I give God all the glory and give credit where credit is due to my fellow forum members. I think this just goes to show that Christ has given gifted teachers to the body for its edification. Whoever trivializes the role of teachers God has placed in the church is a fool. No one man is infallible. But it is God's design that as a corporate body we learn what the Scriptures mean. God bless you, Jeff, for your friendship and your love of God and His Word. Grace to you, Kalos |
