3641 | Who? What? When? Where? How? Why? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 13155
Nolan: Thank you for your kind words. But you are in error regarding who's at shortstop. There is near universal agreement among evangelical scholars that the Greek text of the passage to which you refer is better translated as follows: "Who's on first. What's on second. I don't know's on third base." The debate over this issue of whether who's on first or who's on shortstop became so heated that it was the underlying cause of the split between the eastern and western divisions of the church back in 600 A.D. This debate then stirred the clergy on one side or the other to fall into league with those of like beliefs. The outcome was two main organizations: the National league and the American league. Debate among the clergy was forbidden by a document signed by Pope Dimaggio III at St. Abner Doubleday Cathedral. As a later result, dissident Bishop Steinbrenner was tried and sentenced and executed by drowning in Gator Aid. So, Nolan, I hope you see the seriousness of your error when you say Who's at shortstop. For your penance you must sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame 10 times. And you must mean it from your heart. Now go and make no more errors. Hits and runs are preferable every way. |

EdB: I do not in any way defend the Muslim religion or the use of terrorism against a civilian population. But I want to point out that not every last Muslim on earth is a terrorist. Yes, Muslim terrorists do target school buses, residential neighborhoods, schools and day-care centers. They'll murder one or 100 babies and children without blinking an eye. (Then the established news media in the U.S.A. give aid and comfort to them by telling only the terrorists' side of the story. The U.S. doesn't want to offend the governments of Mid-Eastern oil producing (Muslim) nations.) But it would be unfair to label every Muslim in the world as a bloodthirsty terrorist. It just isn't so. (Please note: Ed, I do not mean to imply that you have so labelled all Muslims. Also, if I have been too political here, I apologize. It is neither my aim nor the aim of this Forum to get into politics. If anyone ever starts down that road, I will be the first to complain to the powers that be at the Lockman Foundation.) --JVH0212 |

3644 | Figurative vrs literal language? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 13131
Repost: 05-04-2001 Hank writes to a poster: "Quoting you: 'The answer is not in man. We all [are in] error. The truth is in the Word.' With the statement as it stands, by itself, one could hardly find fault. But you used it in this context. You said, 'My advice to the gentleman who responded to my queston is that you put your trust in no man and don't let another interpret for you.' "With that I have questions and concerns. "What was Phillip doing for the Ethiopian in the Book of Acts regarding the meaning of the passage in Isaiah? "Why did Paul tell Timothy to preach the word? "Why did Jesus say in Matthew 28:19 to go into all the world and preach the Gospel? Would it not be better simply to send copies of the Bible and let the recipients figure it out for themselves?" (The above was written by Hank and subsequently quoted by JVH0212.) --JVH0212 |

Hank: Good post. Frameable, in fact. Now I'll ask you one. At Cain's wedding reception, were the guest's last names printed on the placecards? To support your answer would you please: 1) give Scripture reference; 2) present two signed affidavits clearly stating that the experts were wrong as usual; 3) include at least two sentences of gibberish in your answer; and 4) include at least one line from a strong member of the forum. --JVH0212 |

It is true that the Holy Spirit was given to us to be our teacher. It is EQUALLY TRUE that Christ gave to the church teachers for the building up of the body of Christ(Ephesians 4:11 and following).

There is right and I, JVH0212, am wrong. And I can prove it. Matthew 23:9 (NASB) "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. pater; a prim. word; a father:--father, father's, fathers, parents. FYI: I looked up Matthew 23:9 in approx. 10 different translations. Not one translation translates pater as reverend. All 10 translate the Greek word into the English word father. Being mistaken serves me right for relying on memory alone instead of looking it up. There, I offer you my sincere thanks for pointing out to me that I, indeed, was in error. Now I will never forget you, brother. A tip of the hat to you, There, --JVH0212 |

3649 | Can a divorced person remarry? | 1 Cor 7:15 | kalos | 13080
I certainly do not think that you or any woman should stay with a husband who abuses you. I should have stated my comment more accurately. What I meant, but inadvertently failed to say, was that in general the ideal would be not to divorce, although there are always exceptions to every generalization. I have never felt that there is no justification for divorce. Sorry for the confusion. --JVH0212 |

I do not wish to be left out of the current question posting marathon. So here is my question: Can someone please explain the meaning of every word in every verse contained in Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21? Some sample questions are: How could God do what those verses say he did? Are these verses meant to be taken literally or figuratively? How could any verse be true or accurate until and unless an explanation is given for every last syllable? Why didn't God author 20 more volumes to explain the meaning of the Bible? Since some of us walk by sight and not by faith, doesn't God owe us an explanation for his past acts and decisions? Since the Bible doesn't tell us how to bake a cake, repair a motorcycle or fly an airplane, then shouldn't those things be best left alone? After all, anything not in the Bible couldn't possibly be true, according to a line by a strong member of the forum? Why is there air? Who's on first? What family did Cain marry into, if not his own? Explain how we are both under the law and not under the law at the same time. Define justification, sanctification, redemption, salvation, atonement without using a Bible dictionary, which is a hoax perpetrated on us by the experts. How many years do I have to be abandoned on a desert island before I become a world class Bible expert? Shouldn't all the property owned by ever seminary be sold and the proceeds go to provide Bibles for remote tribes and peoples? They could then figure out the plan of salvation for themselves and save us the expense of sending people into all the world to preach the gospel to every creature. The list of questions is limited only by one's imagination. No question is too silly. Post away. --JVH0212 |

Romans 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. Actually, Romans 8:9 says both "Spirit of God" and "Spirit of Christ." |

3653 | Is the Christian under Law? | Ex 1:1 | kalos | 13060
Christ did not accomplish the fulfillment of the Law? Are you sure? Is that your final answer? Jesus said, "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill [the law]" (Matthew 5:17]. To say that Jesus did not fulfill the law is to say that somehow Jesus did not do what He Himself said that he came to do. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. "For Christ is the end of the Law [the limit at which it ceases to be, for the Law leads up to Him Who is the fulfillment of its types, and in Him the purpose which it was designed to accomplish is fulfilled. That is, the purpose of the Law is fulfilled in Him] as the means of righteousness (right relationship to God) for everyone who trusts in and adheres to and relies on Him" (Romans 10:4, Amplified Bible). |

3655 | Clones | Genesis | kalos | 12983
Thank you for your reply. But I am afraid that you did not really answer my question as I asked it. For starters, humans don't "create" anything in the biblical sense of the word, i.e. not in the same sense in which God created. If a clone is an artifical genetic replica and a twin is not artificial, then the two are NOT the same thing. Let's try this again. This is the second time I've said this. "Adam and Eve are the only two humans EVER to be created. We are not created. We are born. God does not repeat the act of creation every time another human comes into the world. Scripture nowhere supports such a notion." You are the one who originally used the word "think." Whether you "know" is debatable. I counted at least four occurences of the word "if" in your previous post. As I said, you have not answered my question. What scientific information AND what scriputral information do you have to back up your assertions? That is, quote or cite scientific reference(s) AND passages of scripture to support what you said in your earlier post. I saw quotations from neither works of science nor from the Bible in your most recent post. No disrespect intended. But I would like to see evidence (with the source(s) of the quote(s) plainly given. I.e., give us the author, title, publisher, page number, and copyright year that backs up your claims.) Thank you in advance for your cooperation. --JVH |

3656 | Is the Christian under Law? | Ex 1:1 | kalos | 12952
Bill MC: You are very welcome, sir. Now it is true that by the time of the incarnation and earthly ministry of Christ, the Law had been diluted and altered by the tradition of the rabbis. For example, "Our Lord found the observance of the [Sabbath] encrusted with rabbinical evasions and restrictions (Mt 12:2), wholly unknown to the law, so that [Christ] was Himself held to be a Sabbath-breaker by the religious authorities of the time" (note at Matthew 12:1, New Scofield Reference Bible, 1967, Oxford). I am glad I came across as being gentle. :-) Grace to you, --JVH0212 |

3657 | What do you base your belief on? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 12947
Brian.g writes: "First, why Rome for the location of the Church. Peters final years were spent in Rome, or more specifically, in an area known as Ager Vaticanus. This area did not belong to ancient Rome, nor was it built within the walls of Rome. This is were Peter died and was buried. This simply became the physical center of the Church." Brian: My sincere thanks to you for sharing the Roman Catholic position on the question "Why Rome for the location of the church?" No sarcasm is intended here. When I say thank you for sharing, I really mean it. May I present an alternate view? At some point between 313 and 590 A.D., "Because of location in world capital (Rome), reputation for orthodoxy, the Petrine theory of Matthew 16:16-18, the decline of rival bishops, the winning of peoples, such as the British by Augustine, and able men, such as Leo I, the *Roman* bishop (i.e. the bishop of Rome) was recognized as first of all bishops" (page 2096, Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition, 1986, 1995, Moody Press). (Emphasis added.) This is an alternate answer to the question "Why Rome for the location?" --JVH0212 "In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, and in all things charity." |

To Whom It May Concern: Anyone who thinks Reformer Joe redefines, distorts, dismisses or disbelieves the scriptures just doesn't know what he is talking about. Such a one is very much mistaken. (It was said to Reformer Joe: "Brother, you have tried to redefine every Scripture I have mentioned into practical and positional qualifications. So you are dismissing them out of hand. You're implying that, "Yes, God sees me as positionally righteousness but that's not what I really am." Further quoting of Scripture is pointless if you don't believe them anyway. And, Joe, if you're going to redefine the Scriptures, then further discussion is, unfortunately, unprofitable for us both.") --JVH0212 |
