Dear Hillary, Please find below Bible commentary which should be helpful for your understanding. Shalom Azure ---------- And one said unto him, Lord, are they few that are saved? It is likely that this question was asked by a Jew, and that the two parables illustrating the smallness of the kingdom's beginning suggested it to him. The Jews extended their exclusive spirit even to their ideals of a world to come, so that they believed none but the chosen race would behold its glories. The circumstances attending to the conversion of Cornelius, recorded in Acts, show how this exclusiveness survived even among Jewish Christians. The questioner wished Jesus to commit himself to this narrow Jewish spirit, or else to take a position which would subject him to the charge of being unpatriotic. 13:24 Strive to enter in by the narrow door: for many, I say unto you, shall seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Strive. Literally, agonize. To enter in by the narrow gate. The passage should be compared with that in Matthew 7:13. There one enters by a narrow gate upon a narrow road, indicating the strictness of the Christian life. Here one enters by a narrow door upon a season of festivity, indicating the joyous privileges of a Christian life. For many, I say unto you, shall seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Jesus answers that "many" shall be excluded from the kingdom, and that the questioner, and all others who hear, need to exercise themselves and give the matter their own personal attention lest they be among that many. -- McGarvey and Pendleton |

623 | Counting the Cost | Luke 14:28 | azurelaw | 210222
Dear Doc, It would not be a coincidence. Just last night (my time) I read of the monthly journal of Lutheran Theological Seminary which published some sharings made by the students who had finished their missionary trip to Indonesia (a country dominated by Muslim belief). One of the article titled "affliction" expressed the introspection of a student after he had the chance to have the first hand information and understanding about the persecution of the christians in Indonesia, the severe poverty, government corruption, etc. He said : [My translation] It is too easy and comfortable to be a christian in HK. Somehow, I am tempted to think I offer a lot for Christ just because I am called to study theology for future ministry. I can't help but truly ask myself 'What had I offered?" None! Nothing! I did not give anything, but just receiving...receiving the abundant grace of our God. If I were to face the same difficulties, will I still be faithful to my Lord? Awfully terrible that from the bottom of my heart, I shy away from the question. So touching...and convicting... Shalom Azure |

624 | Repentance, how many times? | Luke 15:20 | azurelaw | 199688
Dear halroy, I believe the below commentary is helpful for understanding the scripture quoted Mat 18:21-22: "21: Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?--In the recent dispute, Peter had probably been an object of special envy, and his forwardness in continually answering for all the rest would likely be cast up to him--and if so, probably by Judas--notwithstanding his Masters' commendations. And as such insinuations were perhaps made once and again, he wished to know how often and how long he was to stand it. till seven times?--This being the sacred and complete number, perhaps his meaning was, Is there to be a limit at which the needful forbearance will be full? 22: Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times; but, Until seventy times seven--that is, so long as it shall be needed and sought: you are never to come to the point of refusing forgiveness sincerely asked. (See on Lu 17:3, 4)." - Jamieson Faussett Brown Shalom Azure |

628 | God's grace and man's impotency | Luke 18:27 | azurelaw | 211433
"We are often told that God never commands us to do what we have no ability to perform, but He does, and that for two very good reasons: first, to awaken us to a sense of our impotency; second, that we might seek from Him the grace and strength we need to do that which is pleasing in His sight. What was the Law—that Law that was "holy, just and good"—given for? Its summarized requirements were, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart... and thy neighbor as thyself." But what man ever did this? What man could do it? Only one—the God-man. Why, then, was the Law given? On purpose to reveal man’s impotency. And why was that? To bring man to cast himself at the foot of God’s omnipotency: "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God" (Luke 18:27). This is the first lesson in the school of God." --- A.W. Dear pooter, Please note the below citation of past discussions in conern with Keith Moore and his affiliates whom you should take heed for yourself and others as well. Post #170230 by BradK "...When you get to the site, click on the blue tab bar "Moore Life Ministries" or "Family Life Church". The 3 biggest things I noticed were: 1. Absolutely NO Doctrinal Statement to be found or linked at all!. How can one gauge the soundness of any ministry without this vital info? I don't know; 2. The most prominent info displayed was a advertisment for a job position as an Airplane Mechanic- and you could click on a tab for more details?!?! 3. There were SEVERAL links for donations to Keith Moore and Family Life Church. This site struck me as petty WOF nonsense and has nothing to do with sound Bible study or serious sermons! Just my two cents worth, but I was UNIMPRESSED!" --- Brad Post #170232 by Hank "...I surveyed the situation by taking a long Google-guided look at Keith Moore, his ministry and his mentors -- people such as Copeland, Dollar, and Hagin: Word of Faith promoters all. On the Keith Moore site, a cursory glance at the "Praise Reports" suggests strongly the kind of 'name-it-and-claim-it' mentality that his followers have bought into. I would call Keith Moore's teaching no more orthodox than that of any other of the false teachers who subscribe to the heretical Word of Faith Movement. --Hank Shalom Azure |

632 | What exactly does the term "son of man" | Luke 24:39 | azurelaw | 212596
Dear Gileum, It is interesting that you answer your own question. Anyway, here is what I have got for you as well: ------------------ It was God Himself who was "manifest in the flesh" (1 Ti 3:16). The One born in Bethlehem's manger was "The mighty God" (Isa. 9:6), and heralded as, "Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:11). Let there be no uncertainty on this point. Had He been "emptied" of any of His personal excellency, had His divine attributes been laid aside, then His satisfaction or sacrifice would not have possessed infinite value. The glory of His person was not in the slightest degree diminished when He became incarnate, though it was (in measure) concealed by the lowly form of the servant He assumed. Christ was still "equal with God" when He descended to earth. It was "The Lord of glory" (I Co 2:8) whom men crucified. "And took upon Him the form of a servant." That was the great condescension, yet is it not possible for us to fully grasp the infinity of the Son's stoop. If God "humbleth Himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!" (Ps 113:6) how much more so to actually become "flesh" and be amongst the most lowly. He entered into an office which placed Him below God (John 14:28; 1 Co 11:3). He was, for a season, "made lower than the angels" (Heb 2:7); He was "made under the law" (Gal 4:4). He was made lower than the ordinary condition of man, for He was "a reproach of men, and despised of the people" (Ps 22:6). by : A. W. Pink -------------------- Shalom Azure |

Dear Rick, Well said, brother. I have just found the below notes in accord with your comments. ---- 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing [this is not carte blanche] in my name [in harmony with His will and His word], I will do it [cf. Jn. 15:16; 16:23]. Note: Praying “in Jesus’ name” is not the recitation of a magic formula or secret password but rather the recognition of who He is, what He stands for, and what He would seek to accomplish. We must ask only what Jesus would ask and by so doing bring glory to the Father. source: http://www.bibleteachingnotes.com/templates/System/ Shalom Azure |

Dear Keliy, I couldn't help asking...are you having bible study together? or Are you trying to reflect your problems through the parable of the talents? The reason I ask is that I do not see how the parable of talents relates to your situation. Or might I have missed something? Anyway, as an outsider, I certainly do not know what really happens between you. You don't need to answer my questions :-) Shalom Azure |

Peace and blessings be with you (John, Val and Cheri) in Thanksgiving. May I offer a bit of my thought that while we may want to set an example in front of our children and wisely interact with our unbelieving neighbours, pray before hand is a must as you have suggested. Do you think it also help to find the chance to read them scriptures which speak about God's condemnation of sin and His planned salvation and blessings for us? Sometimes we do not need to talk too much, but just let the Holy Word do everything for us. This is also an example we set before our children to rely on the Word. Shalom Azure |
