601 | We are not lonely, but He was...for us! | Mark 14:34 | azurelaw | 240233
"Could ye not watch with me one brief hour? Could ye not pity my sorest need? Ah! If ye sleep while the tempests lower, surely, my friends, I am lone indeed."(The Agony from the Cruxificion by John Stainer) What a lonely Jesus, sorrow Jesus! Yet, He is the Joy of men's desiring.... |

Dear Lightedsteps, A belated welcome to the forum. It is always a pleasure to see forum participants - like you - earnestly, courteously and studiously engage in biblical discussion. I certainly believe that such an open attitude would help edifying each other. As I have seen that you have contributed almost a hundred posts on the forum, would you mind filling up your user profile so that we may know one another better. How gracious is our Lord who provides us with this platform that this sister from afar may come to know other siblings in Christ so easily, so near and yet so far. May God richly bless you in your study that you come to know Him more. Shalom Azure |

604 | lying spirit? | Luke | azurelaw | 193403
Dear yonder--, A belated warm welcome to the forum. Thank you for providing us with your background. Do you know that there is a user profile function provided by the Lockman for us to fill in our personal information that we want to disclose? This serves us with the advantage that we can read about the user's background whenever it is possible and available. By the way, you said : "...NIV is a major revision with many INTERESTING (caps for my emphasis) new notes by J Kohlenberger III...", my concern is on your comments about "interesting" and I hope what you meant is inclusive of biblically sounded thoughts. Hope you enjoy the forum. Shalom Azure |

605 | Knowledge of why they are in torment? | Luke | azurelaw | 196528
Dear Brother CDBJ, This is an interesting question. Let me try if my answer helps. I believe the unbelieve do not know the reason of their torment until the judgment day. Scripture support is Matthew 25:44 when Jesus talked about the judgment between the goat and sheep. Shalom Azure |

606 | Commentary on Luke 4:1-13 | Luke | azurelaw | 198224
Grace be with you dear Grace7044. Congratulations, you are the first one who post the first question in 2008...but sorry no prize:-) Could you please rephrase your question for better clarity as I don't quite get it since Luke 4:1-13 talks about Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit to the wilderness ALONE (Jesus is alone as per commentary by Darby and Matthew Henry and it is safe and reasonable to say so as per its context). There is no mention about anyone following Jesus to the wilderness. Shalom Azure |

608 | Where did Jesus do away with the Sabbath | Luke 6:5 | azurelaw | 232674
Dear elder, I am a bit puzzled by your post to Brad. The book of Romans does not have chapter 17 nor 18, and Romans chapter 13 is not talking about Sabbath. So, what is your follow up question on the subject? By the way, your primary question (post 232622) said "...I want scpirtual proof; book, chapter and verse not a opinion". Now, you said you just want to hear other people's POINT OF VIEW (caps are my emphasis); so, do you think that you are contradicting yourself? Shalom Azure |

611 | "An eye for an eye" relevant now? how? | Luke 6:38 | azurelaw | 217274
Dear Brad, Scriptures: Roman 5:8, 1 John 4:7-21, John 14:15, John 17:26 Sorry for my butting in. I believe Doc will answer you. However, I would like to offer my 2 cents in the discussion. 1/ "...because of the love that he felt. It moved him so much that he would sacrifice his life for something." God IS love (1 John 4:8), but love is NOT God. Love is not something outside of God that He feels nor any men who are lovely that make Him feel the love or trigger Him to love. Hope I have not misread you. If so, please correct me. 2/ "...scriptural love is without feeling" As far as I understand Doc, he is not saying scriptural love is without feeling (but I will let him clarify for himself). I believe what Doc meant is that "feeling" is unreliable. Our love for God should be grounded in Truth (the Word - Jesus) and in knowing Him properly (1 John 4:7 "...and everyone who loves is born of God and KNOWS God). Only when we know Him properly, we may love properly. 3/ God demonstrates His love (Roman 5:8) for us through WORDS (the scripture) and DEEDS (Jesus and His Cross). I would recommend you the book "The Four Loves" (by C.S. Lewis) and the book "The difficult doctrine of the Love of God" (by D A Carson). [A short note on the book by D.A. Carson: I know it would not be proper to recommend a book I had not read to others. However, I have read some book reviews rating it highly commendable. In fact, I have been searching locally for getting a copy for my own reading, but to no avail :-( Therefore, I need to wait for my friend who is having a trip to U.S. that he might get me a copy.] Shalom Azure |

612 | wiping feet with hair? | Luke 7:40 | azurelaw | 213831
Dear Catfish, A belated welcome to the forum. May the Lord richly bless your ministry for glorifying our Lord and the Holy Spirit work in the hearts of the adults that they grow in knowledge and love. Both brother Tim and sister Val have given you fine answers in different directions. May I add a bit of my 2 cents of sharing about the passage. We see there is a big contrast (Simon the leper and the sinful woman) in Jesus' saying. My thought has always been overwhelmed by this picture that brought me to apply it to us - professed christians - about the view of sin. This is so convicting to me that sometimes we, as christians, could have focused only on the so-call big sin but forgotten to introspect for the hidden or unnoticed sin. In another word, I might find myself so much moved by our Lord that I have been forgiven for committing murder or adultery etc and thus love Him greatly. However, when it would be the time that I covet and am jealous about something or someone, I might have deemed this only small sin, thus the grieving for it and feeling grateful for being forgiven could be less comparable to the bigger sin. I think it is dangerous for christians to pay lesser attention to smaller (so-call) sin. We really have to guard against ourselves like David did in Psalm 139. Sorry that I seem like rambling and I hope you understand what I am intending to say :-) Shalom Azure |

613 | why pigs | Luke 8:26 | azurelaw | 214361
Dear unction, I think Gill's exposition on Matthew 8:31 may help to shed some light for our better understanding. Shalom Azure "So the devils besought him, saying… All the devils, the whole legion of them, who perceiving that they must be obliged to go out of these men, and after they had earnestly entreated they might not be sent out of the country where they had long been, and had made themselves masters of the tempers, dispositions, and circumstances of the inhabitants, and so capable of doing the more mischief, begged hard, if thou cast us out of these men, or "from hence", as the Vulgate Latin, the Ethiopic, and Munster's Hebrew Gospel read, or "out of our place", as the Persic; since we must depart, and cannot be allowed to enter into other men, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. This request shows the weakness of the infernal spirits, they are not able to do anything without leave, and the superior power of Christ over them, and their acknowledgment of it; as well as the wretched malignity of their nature, who must be doing mischief, if not to the bodies and souls of men, yet to their property and goods; and if they cannot vent their malice on rational creatures, are desirous of doing it on irrational ones. Many reasons have been thought of, why the devils should desire to go into the herd of swine; as because of the filthiness of these creatures, these impure spirits delighting in what is impure; or out of pure hatred to the inhabitants of this country, who, because they could no longer hurt their persons, would destroy their goods; or that by so doing, they might set the people against Christ, and so prevent his usefulness among them; which last seems to be the truest reason, and which end was answered." --- John Gill |

614 | take up "his" cross | Luke 9:23 | azurelaw | 200134
Dear Brother Doc, Thank you for providing the link to this excellent article. When I was reading, I remember my brother wrote in the journal of his seminary in memory of his vocal teacher (who is now at the other side of the Glory) where he said..."My heart is sorrowful in losing a very dear and close friend who always inspires me so much in my spiritual walk and encourages me in my theology study. I could never forget once he said about taking up the cross...the longer you bear it, the deeper it goes into your flesh that you and the cross become one and there is no way to leave it." Thanks again for the heart-touching article. Shalom Azure |

615 | Why Could He Not Do Many Miracles? | Luke 9:42 | azurelaw | 207164
Dear Imm, I am reluctant to call God's saving grace a "gift" as we (sinner) definitely need His grace due to our un-deserving and horrible condition, inability of self-help. Do you think it (Mat 18:21-27) grace or gift? Yes, when someone gives us a gift, we "stretch" our hands to take it and we are "pleased" by the giver. But does God need to please us? When we understand what we need is grace, our heart and mentality will be different. Just my 2 cents. Shalom Azure |

616 | Why did God cast Lucifer out of heaven? | Luke 10:18 | azurelaw | 242410
Dear Brother Doc, Ah..Ha... you hit the button faster than I :-) When typing the answering post, I have a thought that how wonderful and awesome it is that I am created human being not angels for we have been granted Salvation by our precious Lord Jesus that we will not perish forever. I could never understand such a mysterious loving act of God (Rome 16:26) but keep reminding myself to be thankful and stay obedient. Shalom Azure |

617 | Same supper as John 12? | Luke 10:38 | azurelaw | 184369
Dear Mommaphs, Your quote from Mr. Lewis attracted me (for he his my favourite writer) to click on your user profile. And from which I have read the poem you wrote. I would like to say that your poem has deeply touched my heart. As I read on, I really see your love, your hope and your faith toward God. I can tell you that you are a blessing from God for those who are of the same state of suffering. I have friends and fellow members who have been diagnosed with cancer. I found your poem comforting and encouraging. Therefore, I am considering to translate it into Chinese for my friends (for some of them cannot read English). However, I have to ask for your permission to do so. Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Keep you and your family in my prayers Shalom Azure |

620 | Degrees of Punishment | Luke 12:48 | azurelaw | 178909
Dear Mark, I am so glad that you have cited this verse to explain the issue. Your explanation has driven away all my uneasy feelings towards this scripture, which my past understanding has been limited to the view of give and take (this portrayed a mean Jesus, though I know this is totally wrong). When you add to it the view of punishment vs knowledge of n responsibility to God, I am totally persuaded. God bless. Azure |
