3186 | Five Questions for Church Membership | Heb 13:17 | Searcher56 | 216253
God's day to you, Doc. Doctor J. Ligon Duncan III said, "I ran a Google search on these questions earlier this week to see where they would pop up on the internet, and it was interesting how many different families of Christians, denominational groupings, use basically these five questions as their basic questions of membership. These questions stretch back for at least 450 or 500 years in the English-speaking world – and maybe they’re older than that." I also did. There are many hits. For his message series go to http://www.fpcjackson.org/resources/sermons/The_Church/ select membership then the message Otherwise type the following, expect replace "o/o" with the percent sign http://www.fpcjackson.org/resources/sermons/The_Church/Church o/o 20Membership/no.5_do_you_submit_yourself_to_the.htm I wonder if the church rule comes into play with this point. 3190 | James instead of Jacob -- WHY? | James 1:1 | Searcher56 | 173471
Kalos, God's day to you, my brother and friend, Iakobos (Strong's #2385) James is "supplanter" Iakob (Strong's #2384) Jacob is "heel-catcher or supplanter" http://bible1.crosswalk.com/ says they are the same, which you said, I think. http://www.bibletexts.com/qa/qa138.htm says ... "James" was not used in the KJV to especially honor King James, though the name "James" was made even more popular because of King James. "James" had already been considered to be the Middle English equivalent of the Greek word Iakobos ... ... there is more info at the site. http://hebrew-streams.org/frontstuff/tatiq.html says ... Yakobos is Hellenized form of Yakob ... Given the long history of anti-Judaism in the English church, it's easy to see why "Jacob" would be offensive to Christians ... The custom dates back at least to John Wycliffe who translated his NT in 1382. (Contrary to some rumors, the custom did not start with the "King James Version" of 1611). ... ... there is more info at the site. Searcher |

3192 | What is our attitude toward trails? | James 1:2 | Searcher56 | 11813

3193 | Testing Faith | James 1:2 | Searcher56 | 159859
Scripture ... Deu 13:1-3 ... "If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. I quoted Deuteronomy 13:3 out of context. |

3195 | What is the purpose of the wisdom? | James 1:5 | Searcher56 | 11808

3196 | Scripture alone? | James 1:5 | Searcher56 | 191894
You FAILED to get my point ... you want to use Scripture only, citing Scripture that was out of CONTEXT. Do you understand?
3197 | Scripture alone? | James 1:5 | Searcher56 | 191914
Once more ... you cited Luke 24:45 and James 1:5 in your first post in this thread. However, I proved that you took these verses out of context. Therefore, if you want to cite onlt Scripture, you must know the context, else it is pretext. Moreover, some people need interpetation, just in Nehemiah 8, as well it is part of teching (Acts 18:25, et. al.). Do not cite verses out of context. |

3198 | Scripture alone? | James 1:5 | Searcher56 | 191915
Word Study ... Didasko (teach), Kerusso (preach) ... Parable Scripture distinguishs teaching from preaching, they are two different Greek words, see above. They are used thrice together (Mat 11:1 Rom 2:21 1Ti 6:2). Since YOU don't want anything more than Scripture, that is all you get. I normally would explain the difference. |

3199 | Scripture alone? | James 1:5 | Searcher56 | 191916
Context is ALWAYS relevant.
3200 | What part does God play in temptations? | James 1:13 | Searcher56 | 11783
Is there a contradiction ... didn't God tempt Abraham (Gen 22:1) and Israel (Exo 15:25)? God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can handle (1Co 10:13) ... so what part does He have in our temptation? How to the trails we face (vv 2, 12) relate to our temptations? Steve |
