1622 | How does this order of authority work? | Eph 1:20 | Ray | 148171
Hi Tim, Now I am considering with Steve in the thread below whether to include the "He made alive" that is found in Ephesians 2:1, NKJ. My copy of Dr. Green's translation reads, "and (He worked in) you being dead in trespasses and sins," So here is the "art" of translation in that he is now saying how God is working in us after the three things took place, namely Jesus raised, seated, with all things under His feet. I would connect and compare Ephesians 2:1 with Ephesians 1:3 for we are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. We would appreciate your input. From the heart, Ray |

1623 | How does this order of authority work? | Eph 1:20 | Ray | 148180
Hi Tim, Thank you for your participation. You have written that there are two verbs in Ephesians 2:6. However, in your literal Greek long sentence the "sat us together" lacks a pronoun. I would see four nouns and pronouns for the verse. The NKJ reads, "and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus..." I believe that we agree that there are four occurances of Deity in the verse. The NASB has four occurances but we would say that the pronouns should be placed with the verbs. I think you would agree with, "and He raised us up together, and He sat us together in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus." So, positionally believers are in Christ Jesus but we just aren't "with Him" yet. We are blessed with every spiritual blessing which He bestows on us, having been predestined to adoption as sons. Compare Ephesians 2:6 with Colossians 2:12. Colossians 2:12, "having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead." Also Colossians 3:2, "Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory." I want to express comparisons besides Eph 1:3 that would suggest a pronoun (or a verb?) for Ephesians 2:1, but not now. Later? From the heart, Ray |

1624 | How does this order of authority work? | Eph 1:20 | Ray | 148223
Hi Tim, Thank you for that reminder of the built-in pronouns. My thought that was that the verbs, in order to show the different actions, could use the pronouns. Yet I hear what you are saying. 1) For Ephesians 1:22, the NKJ has a pronoun for "And He put all things in subjection". You choose to translate it "And having put all things in subjection" because you see that verb as being done before He gave Him as Head to the church. And I agree with your translating choice. However, after He fills the church in Ephesians 1:23, I see the need for the pronoun and verb saying that He made us alive; we who were dead in trespasses and sins. In other words, I see the need for a pronoun for Eph 1:22 "And He put" OR for Ephesians 2:1 "and you He made alive." My choice would be for "And you He made alive." 1) I would compare Ephesians 1:22 with 1 Corinthians 11:11-16. Ephesians 1:23 with 1 Corinthians 11:20-22. Ephesians 1:23 with 1 Corinthians 15:38. 2) Ephesians 2:1, NKJ, "And you **He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins," 1 Corinthians 15:45, "So also it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living soul." The last **Adam [became] a life-giving spirit." From the heart, Ray |

1627 | Is the Law abolished or not? | Eph 2:15 | Ray | 57788
Hi McGracer, These are not in conflict. The Lord God gave us the Law and Christ came and showed us how to follow that Law in the inner man. He fulfilled the Law by His sinless life. And we are to be perfect just as He is perfect. We ourselves still can not keep the Ten Commandments for instance perfectly, and we certainly can not keep the commandments as set forth on the Sermon on the Mount. So our righteousness comes from Christ and what He did for us on the cross. Our sins are covered through faith in Him. In talking about the first and second Adams we see that by one man (who was called Man) came death, by the second Man came life. The Law or the knowledge of good and evil, brought death to the first Adam. Romans 7:21, "I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of (God) in the inner man. Matthew 5:2, "And opening His mouth (He) began to teach them saying,..." Matthew 5:16, "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that **I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I/ did not come to abolish, but to fulfill." Matthew 5:22, "But (I) say to you that..." Deuteronomy 5:22, "These words the (Lord) spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst pf the fire, of the cloud and of the thick gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me." Deuteronomy 5:24, "...and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives. Now then why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the (Lord) our God any longer, then we shall die. Romans 7:24, "Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [this body of death]? Thanks be to God [--] through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of **God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin." Matthew 5:17, "Do not think that **I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I/ did not come to abolish, but to fulfill." Consider this interpretation of Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ/Jesus. For the law of the *spirit--of life in Christ (Jesus)-- has set you free from the law of sin and of death." But as I have said, the commandments are seemingly more difficult. Matthew 5:22, "But (I) say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court." Matthew 5:39, "But (I) say to you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." Matthew 6:33, "But seek first His kingdom and **His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you." I hope these things have been helpful to you. From the heart, Ray |

1628 | Are our hearts HOLY or Wicked? | Eph 3:17 | Ray | 138149
Hi Mommapbs, Men's hearts are wicked. But when Christ dwells in our hearts by faith and we know the love of Christ, we are filled up to all the fullness of God. When God proves Himself holy and His word washes us clean, then we receive a new heart and a new spirit within us. Then we serve in newness of Spirit and follow the law of Spirit-- of life in Christ Jesus because God condemned sin in the flesh. Ephesians 3:17, Romans 7:14, Romans 8:2. Ezekiel 36:26, "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put My *spirit within you and cause you to walk in (My) statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. 28 And you will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God." Ephesians 3:20, "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the *power that works within us, to (Him) be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. I hope you had a blessed day. From the heart, Ray |

1629 | Are our hearts HOLY or Wicked? | Eph 3:17 | Ray | 138166
Hi Mommapbs, Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?" Perhaps you could contribute some thoughts to #137809 so that we can decide whether we are trying to have a heart of a god or of God. How much are we capable of doing on our own? How much are we capable of doing even if we have help from God? Jeremiah 17:9, "I, the Lord,/ search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds." Contrast/compare Ezekiel 28:2 Ezek 28:2, "...Because your heart is lifted up And you have said, 'I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods, In the midst of the seas'; Yet you are a man and not God/, Although you make your heart like the heart of God--" Again, do we want to make our hearts out to be like a god's or like the heart of God? What are we capable of? What does Satan think that he is capable of? Ezekiel 28:2, NKJ, "Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, 'Thus says the Lord God: "Because your heart is lifted up, And you say, 'I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods, In the midst of the seas,' Yet you are a man, and not a god, Though you set your heart as the heart of god 3 (Behold,...and your heart is lifted up because of your riches)," The NKJ sees the subject of the passage as having set his heart as the heart of a god, while the NASB reads "Like the heart of God". What do you think? Psalm 82:6, "I, on my part said, "You are gods, And all of you are sons of the Most High. Nevertheless you will die like men, And fall like any one of the princes." 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth! For it is Thou who dost possess all the nations." From the heart, Ray |

1630 | Are our hearts HOLY or Wicked? | Eph 3:17 | Ray | 138227
Hi Mommapbs, Excellent thoughts here I think. There are a couple of things that you might consider however. 1) Ezekiel 36:26 talks about our receiving a heart of flesh instead of the heart of stone. So when applying this passage to our lives as believers, the heart is still flesh. You have said, "Daily we have a choice, to live from the heart or live from the flesh." Romans 8:1-14". I think that it would be better said that we have a choice to live according to the (s)Spirit or walking according to the flesh. 2) We set our minds according to the things of the (Spirit). Romans 8:5. And in the same way the (Spirit) also helps our weakness. Romans 8:26 1 Cor 7:32, "But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; 33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the (Lord), that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 34 And this I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is seemly, and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord." 3) I have penciled in a lower case "spirit" for Ezekiel 36:27. That spirit within us is the power that the Spirit gives us. That spirit is the new heart, that spirit is what we should be filled with, that spirit is what we should clothe ourselves with as the holy ones chosen of God. Colossians 3:12, "And so, as tose who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the (Lord) forgave you, so also should you. 14 And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity." The word of Christ richly dwells within us, and we should be filled with joy and the holy spirit, teaching and admonishing one another. 4) We are to live godly lives, but God is the Holy One, the only true God; and we are simply saints or holy ones. In Ezekiel 36:23 the Spirit of God is proved holy among us. From the heart, Ray |

1631 | Are our hearts HOLY or Wicked? | Eph 3:17 | Ray | 138243
Hi Angel, You wrote, "Yet, when we allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the fullness of Truth, we begin to better undertand our Lord's Word:... (John 15:3-6)." Looking at the statement with my usual fetish for capitalization I can agree with the capitalized Truth for you are talking about the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:19). However, when considering God's (w)Word, what are you talking about? In considering John 15:3-6 are you looking for the Lord's God? Or are you considering God's word, the Scriptures? Have you considered John 15:3-6 in other versions, especially the NASB and NKJ and thought about looking at Jesus as the Vine [sic]? Is that a sense in which we can better understand our Lord's Word? Just thoughts to consider. I appreciate your Scripture references and their contrasts. Romans 5:15, "But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of (God) and the gift by the grace of the one **Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many." Romans 3:23, "for all have sinned and come short of the glory of (God). 24 being justified as a gift by **His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;" Romans 3:26, "for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, that (He) might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in **Jesus." 27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but be a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law." From the heart, Ray |

1634 | Baptism, why not more than one? | Eph 4:4 | Ray | 79124
Hi Disciplerami, Ephesians 4:4 says that there is one baptism. I see no word "water" in Acts 2:38 or 22:16. In Acts 2:38 I see the words "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". In Acts 22:15, the Holy Spirit is seen because they were to be His witnesses per Acts 1:8. Acts 22:15, "For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard." You didn't mention Acts 11:16, "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'" You didn't mention Acts 1:5, "for John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." So my question to you is, "Since there is one baptism, why do you choose a physical one (water) over a spiritual one?" Galatians 5:5, "For we through the Spirit,/ by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love." Compare words/contrast Persons, Ephesians 4:4, "one Lord,/ one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all, and in all." Galatians 3:2, "This one thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit,/ are you now being perfected by the flesh?" The slashes are mine for comparisons. From the heart, Ray |

Hi jmscott2, I can see that you are filled with holy spirit. What I would like you to do is say to us, if you mean it, "Jesus is Lord". 1 Corinthians 12:3, "Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit." Can you type this out for us as your testimony? "I believe that Jesus is Lord." You have received the holy spirit; do you know Him? From the heart, Ray |

1636 | Does Jude 1:17 answer Eph 4:11? | Eph 4:11 | Ray | 37730
Hi Ray, Here it is almost a year later, and you're still talking to yourself. I'm told that's all right unless you start answering yourself. :) Actually, I'm writing this because Jh2 wrote a post for this thread yesterday and there is still interest in it. I would like to correct a typo that I made and talk about the compared verses. I should have written Ephesian 4:ll in its second use in the post. The suggested verses for comparison were Eph 4:ll and Jude 17. Actually, today I would like to look at Eph 4:12 and Jude 19. Ephesians 4:12, "for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the BUILDING UP of the body of Christ;..." All caps are for comparison. Jude 19, "These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved, BUILDING YOURSELVES UP on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God,..." The comparison is one of contrast between those who would cause divisions and those who would build up the believers. The comparison is one of knowledge of the Son of God and praying in the Holy Spirit. Praying for the will of God; for the keeping of ourselves in the love of God and the speaking of the truth in love. From the heart, Ray |

1637 | Please pray, and Love to Ray | Eph 4:12 | Ray | 73615
Hi charis, Thank you very much. This post is nearly a year late for somehow I let your kind post be unanswered by me. I was following the thread for this verse, glanced up and saw my name, so I will now thank you formally. I appreciate the prayers that have been offered to God for my health and His will. I appreciate being on the prayer lists of several of the small churches that I have belonged to through the years. I am thankful to God for the friends here on the forum from all over the world who expressed concern for me. I have had a bone scan recently which showed no change from a year ago, so I find encouragement in that. Really, I feel well and am thankful that with all the things that can happen to our bodies, this is something that I can live or die with, being content. Thanks again, Randy. From the heart, Ray |

1638 | A fresh mental and spiritual attitude? | Eph 4:23 | Ray | 150000
Hi Mark, I know that you are worried that I look like a Jehovah's Witness spy that has been hiding in the ranks of the forum; what with my believe in a 'holy spirit'. Let me put your fears at rest; I am not a Jehovah's Witness. However, I do interpret a lower case holy spirit in the occurances speaking of being filled with [the] holy spirit. You need to find verses for me where the Person of the Holy Spirit is found in the passages of being filled with holy spirit. And I am talking of 'filled with' not His "coming upon them." I also believe that His Spirit indwells us; the Scripture "Christ in us the hope of glory" is well known by us. I just don't believe that we are "filled with the Holy Spirit". 1) When His (Spirit) indwells us then we are walking together with the (Lord). Romans 8:11, "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His (Spirit) who indwells you." Ephesisans 4:17, "This I say therefore, and affirm together with the (Lord), that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,..." *********** Romans 8:11, "for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body you will live." Ephesians 4:18, "being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;" ****** Romans 8:16, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of (God)." Ephesians 4:30, "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of (God), by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." *********** 2) These are verses that show my understanding of the Person and the existence of a spirit that we have received. I believe that the Holy Spirit is a Person of the trinity. And I say it this way; that God is the Giver and the gift is holy spirit. I do not say that the Holy Spirit is not a Gift, just as the Son was the Gift of God although it isn't worded that way. But I am encouraging a consideration of the "holy spirit" as a gift. 3) You have asked for Scriptures that speak of the 'holy spirit', but we will talk of those when you get back with me with verses that talk of the Person in connection with being "filled with the holy spirit." From the heart, Ray |

Hi Hank, I wanted to start writing to you at 5:30 before writing to Mark but changed my mind. I was concerned because you are putting words in my mouth that I did not speak. I have never spoken of man's spirit or "man's holy spirit". I have spoken of the Giver and the gift, the Word and the word, the Spirit and the spirit, the Rock and the rock, etc. but not in speaking of man's spirit. I would encourage you to get involved in looking at the occurances of being "filled with the holy spirit". Show me and straighten me out on where the Person is spoken of in those passages. However, we all have to keep our lives in balance and keep our priorities straight. :) I have a Detroit Tiger game that starts at 8:00. From the heart, Ray |
