1741 | is the NIV a good bible to read? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 16066
Hi kalos, Last night on television the networks showed Palestinians celebrating the loss of life here in the United States. They were saying "God is good, God is good." I don't believe that this situation is because of our God's goodness, so I can not agree with them that it is from God. What I tried to say in my previous post is that to my mind they were saying, "Our god is good." "Our god is good." Let me type that word in the lower case once more."Our god (Allah) is good." If their god rejoices over suffering, then he is not good. Its because we don't notice capitalization that we don't give the glory that is due Him. Our God is good and He is able to help us in our time of need. |

A P.S. from Ray, I'm talking of the book "Theomatics" and not the NIV of this thread as far as my recommendation goes. Theomatics uses the NASB.
1745 | is the NIV a good bible to read? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 16021
Hi Tim, I'm sorry that the flap cover of the book, represented by the web site, did not lead you to looking at the book. This book is not about codes, numerology, or hidden meanings. It is about comparison of Scriptures, groupings of Scriptures, subjects are tied together; all through the use of the letters of the languages themselves. Each letter has a numerical value (according to Webster's dictionary) and the totals of words and phrases have been shown to have significance. I believe that if man can run computers on what, two numbers, that our great God, whose name is Word, can accomplish and has accomplished greater things than we can imagine. I recommend the book highly. |

Hi kalos, If you want to see people celebrating on the streets of Palestine "Our god is good"; then don't be concerned about capitalization. If you want to give glory to God in every way possible, then acknowledge Him as the "God who is able... |

1747 | When did disciples receive the Spirit? | John 20:22 | Ray | 16018
Hi retxar, I added the word "either" in reference to Bill Mc's position. I'm sorry for putting words in your mouth. 1) Would you like to give your understanding of John 7:38b in regard to the Spirit? 2) What is your view of the word "now" in John 17:5? 3) What is your understanding of John 14:18,19 and verse 28 where they speak about "I go away", and "I will come to you". Again, sorry for the misunderstanding. |

1750 | When did disciples receive the Spirit? | John 20:22 | Ray | 15992
Hi retxar. John 7:38b, 39, "...as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.' But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive;..." He spoke of the Spirit in that Scripture quote. Where do you see it? John 17:1 says, "The hour has come." Verse 5 says, "Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself..." I think that now means now. The Spirit would be free to be given when He went to the Father and the Father sent Him. I don't believe that the Spirit was given before Pentecost, either, but I don't think your understanding of the Scripture verses quoted is complete. |

1751 | A Brain-teaser from Ray: 09/9/01 | Eccl 2:25 | Ray | 15863
Hi Nolan, Praise the Lord for the* choice of Scripture; for I agree with your test. The stars and parentheses will be mine for comparison. Again I ask if we can give credit to Coca Cola for making a good product? Are some things learned from others or are all things only from God? I believe that we can eat and have enjoyment without Him. I believe that we can get wisdom and knowledge and joy from other sources also. And it is for this reason that I suggest the following interpretation for Ecclesiastes 26:25,26. We use the NASB. I would take the two "He" pronouns out of verse 26 and the Him out of verse 25. The Him of verse 25 is translated "more than I" in many translations and shouldn't get too much opposition. The two "He has given" phrases can still be inferred from the "hand of God" and the "gift of God of verses surrounding it. But by taking the two pronouns out it would allow for the introduction of other sources as well. If you are still with me I will give you "my personal copy" as always, for what its worth. I believe verse 26 is even more grammatically correct. Ecclesiastes 2:25,"For who can eat and who can have enjoyment more than me? "(Or myself and I) Eccles 2:26, "For to a person who is good in (His) sight is given wisdom and knowledge and joy, while to the sinner is given the task of gathering and collecting so that he may give to one who is good in God's sight..." I praise the Lord for your* choice of Scripture and wonder if you would agree with me for the verses surrounding it. Philippians 4:7-9, "And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ (Jesus). Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." The gift of God* in Ecclesiastes will be given to us to meet all our needs "according to His* riches in glory..." Philippians 4:19, "Now to our (God) and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen." 1752 | A Brain-teaser from Ray: 09/9/01 | Eccl 2:25 | Ray | 15782
Hi Nolan, I am thinking of the life of balance here. Do we have to think that all that we do has to revolve around God? Is it possible to enjoy an ice cream cone or a diet coke and think "These manufacturers really knew what they were doing; this tastes great." Can we realize that things on earth come from other things than God? Can we receive wisdom and knowledge and joy from other people as well as from God? Is there a time for that also? Can one be "So heavenly minded that he is of no earthly good?" I'm speaking of a life of balance here. I believe that we can be too busy with religious activities to the detriment of our daily lives with our loved ones. We need to have a time with them also. Ecclesiastes 7:15-18 says, "I have seen everything during my lifetime of futility; there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his wickedness. Do not be excessively righteous, and do not be overly wise. Why should you ruin yourself? Do not be excessively wicked, and do not be a fool. Why should you die before your time? It is good that you grasp one thing, and also not let go of the other; for the one who fears God comes forth with both of them." This is the balance of which I am speaking; being in the world a little bit although not of it. Realizing that we are people that need relationships here on earth as well a good relationship with our heavenly Father. So, what do you think? Can you say with Ecclesiastes 2:25, "For who can eat and who can have enjoyment more than me?" But again, I don't deny that everything is from the hand of God. The person who is good in His sight will realize that everything is the gift of God. |

Hi Nolan, So you see verse 25 as repeating the thought of verse 24, "There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and tell himself that his labor is good. This also I have seen that it is from the hand of God." You don't see any way that some of his enjoyment is from life in general? Some of the things maybe he has learned or gained insight about in his studies, or some accomplishments he has made at work or play? |

1755 | Who and what is this vers about? | Deut 32:30 | Ray | 15671
Hi Nolan, I wonder if you would count the pronouns again in your NASB for without counting the "no god besides" I still come up one short. For this reason I'm going to go with the NKJ here with its "no God besides Me". I believe you did the prayer found in 2 Samuel with me and at that time I was looking for consistency and wanted to make a change to the "no God besides Me". What I'm saying now is that the consistency perhaps should go to the "no God besides Me". For 2 Samuel 7:24 I would then go to the NKJ for their reading. That would enable the pronouns to be divisible by nine with the reading of "no God besides Thee". Perhaps, Nolan, we should just say here for anyone who is considering these passages with us that we have determined that the song here in Deut 32 and the prayer of 2 Samuel 7:18 have pronouns of Deity totals that are divisible by three (as well as nine). This may sound like "numerology" to some but for me it has given me a reason to praise my Triune God. I see the same situation in the high-priestly prayer of Jesus in John 17. I would pray that this fact would be meaningful to people who are unsure of the Deity of Christ or do not see the Holy Spirit as a Person. Nolan, as far as the rock in 1 Samuel 2:2 I think it should be lower case to go along with "no one holy like", "no one besides", and "Nor is there any rock like". What do you think? |

1756 | difference. filling of joy and fruit joy | Rom 8:14 | Ray | 15613
Hi Tim, The places where I see "holy spirit" is in regard for the "filling". We know that the Greek gives no help for capitalization and it is up to us to interpret. For this reason I go to the translations that capitalize Deity for their interpretation. I believe that the possibility of misinterpretation is there both ways, lower and upper case. My interpretation of John 3:34 came from the only book that I studied besides the Scriptures in various translations. (As far as my interpretive study is concerned). It was written by a man named Bultema but I haven't seen it in my library for years; I misplaced it. I'll try and find it for you. May I suggest that John 4:10 would be a good verse for comparison in that the spirit and the living water can be understood as the word of God. Also, you can consider whether John 4:10 should be "it" or John 6:33 should be "that". NASB |

Hi Bill Mc, I didn't mean to take away any of your joy. I'm sorry if I was too "picky". I'm interested about your comments about the Holy Spirit for you seem to deny that the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit. How could He be otherwise? |

1758 | difference. filling of joy and fruit joy | Rom 8:14 | Ray | 15606
Hi Tim, Thanks for your vote. I agree with you about the "I am" statements. The "I am" the Bread of life is an interesting study. I go with the good shepherd, however. The thing that holds me back on a decision on the Vine is the idea of the Vine-dresser. The only place that I don't see the Holy Spirit as a Person is when,as I've said, Scriptures talk of the filling of the Holy Spirit or full of the Spirit. There are other times also when it talks of the Spirit when actually it is a spirit or an angel. Acts 13:48 talks about rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord. Verse 49 talks about the word of the Lord. I believe they were filled with Scriptures to share. And they relied on the Lord for the right word of grace, Acts 14:3, but again I don't see any "control" here. We are led by the Spirit but we are to be filled with (the) holy spirit more or less by commandment. The disciples shook off the dust of their feet in protest in Acts 13:51, but perhaps they were still filled with love for one another. What do you think? Look at John 3:34 with me and consider another lower case spirit. "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the spirit without measure." |

1759 | Who and what is this vers about? | Deut 32:30 | Ray | 15598
Hi Nolan, I would guess that you used the NKJ version. If so, look at Deuteronomy 32:39 and then go to your NASB and see where you can pick up the last pronoun. Remember that we are looking for consistency with "no god besides Me". Compare 1 Samuel 2:2 and 2 Samuel 7:22 Later, Ray
1760 | difference. filling of joy and fruit joy | Rom 8:14 | Ray | 15566
Hi Bill Mc, In the places where Scriptures speak of being "filled with the Holy Spirit" or full of the Spirit and of wisdom" or "full of faith and of the Holy Spirit" or here "full of joy and the Holy Spirit", I put in the lower case the "holy spirit". I do that in all the occcurances. I do not see the word filled as meaning "being controlled". I think that that is popular in the "Four Spiritual Laws" pamphlet as I recall, but I just don't see it. These words of joy, wisdom, faith, speaking the word, etc.are in the lower case and I think that this holy spirit should also be lower case. I'm thinking of some Old Testament passages where it would be confusing to have some words lower case and some capitalized. For instance when the passage speaks of the rock and fortress and refuge. One wouldn't speak of the Rock and fortress and refuge, although we certainly know Him as the Rock. You have written that "He was the vine and we are the branches" and also "we have been grafted into the Vine". I mention this because of my desire to have consistency in the Scriptures. Actually, I don't know if I have decided which it should be anyway, vine or Vine; probably Vine. Which would you say now if you had a choice of interpretation by capitalization? Anyway, every verse that has "filled with the holy spirit" is lower case for my mind and my copy. So in regard to the question here I would say that we are filled with joy and have joy as a fruit of the Spirit. |
