681 | Judas went to hell? | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 28411
Greetings Serenetime, I disagree, and the following is actually a *re-post* of my analysis of Matthew 27:3-5... You see, Judas only felt regret for his action after Jesus was sentenced to death (Matthew 27:1-2). This is significant because it reveals that Judas was thinking that Jesus would miraculously escape while he got the bribe! But Jesus did not escape (to fulfill all Scripture), and Judas felt a great remorse and regret for his actions (because Jesus was, in fact, going to die)! This was not a remorse or sorrow that would lead to repentence (2 Cor. 7:10), since Judas killed himself before experiencing divine grace. If Judas truly felt a God-centered sorrow over the wickedness of his sin, then he would have repented immediately after the betrayal, not after Jesus' arrest, since the consequences of his action were not unexpected, even though they were horrifying. A "God-centered" remorse would have been a remorse from the very idea of putting the Son of God in danger at all! However, he only felt remorse after the Son of Man was sentenced to death. Also, if he had experienced divine grace, then why did he kill himself? Instead, Judas experienced a 'self-centered' sorrow over the painful consequences of his sin. Since the Son of Man was going to die, he was still more concerned about his well-being rather than that of the Son of Man. This passage illustrates the remarkable power of an awakened conscience! And since Judas' covetous heart trumped his duty as a disciple to love the Son of Man, the possession of his bribe so struck him in the heart that he could not use it or keep it any longer, but he could only throw it into the temple and kill himself. And this is the "self-centered" sorrow that leads to death (2 Cor. 7:10). Blessings to you, Nolan |

Greetings Love Fountain, First of all, I apologize to you for the grief that I have obviously caused you. I sincerely did not mean for that to happen. Second, I disagree with you, on all counts concerning Judas' fate. I believe that the Bible does lead us, one way or the other, to the conclusion that Judas indeed went to hell. Throughout all my study and experience of being saved by Jesus Christ, I have never seen or heard of anyone contend that Judas went to heaven. But as you have said, my response was very harsh to you, and I apologize. The reason why I responded the way that I did is the simple fact that I see no other rational way of looking at this, and I cannot be convinced. This thread has obviously created much more trouble than it was worth, and I again apologize for hurting you. I honestly did not mean to do that. I hope and pray that my actions have not hindered your participation to this Forum. If there is any other way that I can help to repair my relationship with you, then please write me an e-mail, and I will try to help. Blessings to you, Nolan |

Greetings Norrie, One thing that your friend is forgetting, and that is that the Lord will preserve the words of Scripture forever, and that the Scriptures cannot be broken. Here is a listing of verses on the inspiration and preservation of Scripture... 1 Cor. 2:13; John 16:13; 1 Cor. 14:37; 1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Peter 1:16; Psalm 119:9-16; Psalm 119:97-106; Psalm 119:129-130; Proverbs 30:5-6; Matt. 4:4; Matt. 24:35; John 1:1-4,14; John 17:17; Col. 3:16; 2 Tim. 2:15; Heb. 4:12-13; 2 Peter 1:19-21; Rev. 22:18-19; Psalm 12:6; 2 Sam. 22:31; Psalm 18:30; Psalm 19:8; Psalm 119:140; John 10:35; Matt. 5:18; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33; Luke 16:17 I already have "jumplists" for Scripture references to the Trinity and to the Deity of Christ, but I do not have such a list for the preservation and inspiration of Scripture. The above verses is a 'start' in the beginning of a new list, and I hope to have it completed soon. Blessings to you, Nolan |

689 | Is Limited Atonement Bibical? | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 35338
Greetings Hank! I most certainly agree! The "logic" of reformed theology concerning limited atonement is flawed, since Luke 19:10, John 4:42, 1 Tim. 4:10, Hebrews 2:9, Romans 5:6, Romans 5:18, 1 John 2:2, Isaiah 53:6, and 2 Peter 2:1 do expressly state what they state, without any reformed lens to look through.. I continue to hold that seemingly restrictive verses can be logically fit into an unlimited scenario much more easily than universal references can be made to fit into a limited atonement scenario. The verses themselves are not irreconciliable, but man's extreme branches of theology that claim to be based on these verses are irreconciliable. What do you know, another thread on Election! I needn't have to go to the poll booth anymore! Just come to the StudyBibleForum, where one can seemingly cast their vote and witness an Election seemingly every day! :-) Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings Hank! I couldn't agree with you more, my friend.. Of course, we must not lose sight of what you are really trying to tell us by what you say, since you were among the very FIRST handful of people who ever stumbled upon and logged onto this Forum! You are truly one of the very few, my friend, who truly know and have experienced what it could mean and what kind of consequences that another extended, unresolvable debate could have on this fledgling Forum, and if Lockman and any of the rest of us would like to see its continued prosperity rather than its virulency, then we would do well by heeding the wisdom that you have to share, my friend! Hank, you were here when the Forum first ever began its correspondence on election. You were here and present when the Forum first ever discussed eternal security. You were here when the first ever post was written about Cain's wife or angels sleeping with women or Trinity vs. Oneness! You were a witness to all of this, and more than once you saw and forecasted the Forum taking a turn for the worst, generously providing us with your timely wisdom where it eventually proved to aide and guide us in the best way! Your posts are a testimony to all of this, and your influence and touch on this Forum was and is vital to its growth, nursing this Forum through a year, and touching many lives and souls in the process! You know and have witnessed what these arguments do, and there is hardly anyone else on the Forum who is better suited and more respected than you are, my friend, when it comes to giving these newcomers a bit of advice on how to treat this Forum than you are, my friend. You have been and always will be a tremendous asset and steward to this Forum! All of the "veterans" alike respect you, and all of the newcomers would do very well to take notes from your most excellent example! Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings Love Fountain, In all the time that I have spent on this Forum, Kalos has never came up short in his honesty and on pointing out the truth, and I greatly regret to see that it has been "hinted" at that Kalos has somehow "added" words to the Bible.. Have the new users forgotten Kalos or have they even noticed the quality in his posts that is second to none?? They speak with a wisdom that is very hard to find or come by on this Forum! Lest you all forget, Kalos led this Forum in its infant days with his strong balance between correct Bible interpretation and the excellent insight that he has never failed to exhibit in his posts! And he continues to be a leader of this Forum. Of course, back then he was known as 'JVH0212', but the change in Username has not changed or dulled the quality of his posts, which are very insightful and never fail to speak to the truth and integrity of Scripture. If ever a post was written that challenged Biblical integrity, JVH0212 was there to offer guidance based on Biblical truth! He (now Kalos) has a history of being very prolific on this Forum, being the First User EVER to reach 1,000 posts! Only a few users on this Forum could ever claim to have made such a difference or have had such an influence in shaping this Forum as Kalos has had, and I decree that every Forum Member owes Kalos a salute due to his faithful and ever conscientious service of accurate Biblical interpretation! And the newer members would do very well to respect Kalos and what he has brought, since he is indeed THE historian and one of the few "Founding Fathers" of this Forum. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings again, Angelface! :) Actually, there is nothing wrong with the Scriptures! But the questions that have been given to you are "Trick Questions"... :-) They have been posed to you to help prompt you to read the entire passage, so that you can easily pick out the inconsistencies in the questions that are being asked, not in the Bible. Blessings to you, Makarios :-) |

696 | Translational Difficulties, Living Bible | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 69304
Translational Difficulties in the Living Bible If obscurity and poor English are the failings of a literal translation, freer translations sometimes err by moving too far from the author's cultural context or by adding meaning that was not in the mind of the original author. The popular Living Bible (LB) at times loses the cultural setting in its attempt to use contemporary language. Translating "lamps" as "flashlights" (Ps. 119:105 LB), a "holy kiss" as "handshakes" (1 Peter 5:14 LB), and "kissed" as "embraced him in friendly fashion" (Matt. 26:49 LB) all move away from the historical context and hence away from the author's intended meaning. There is also the danger of adding meaning not present in the original. In 1 Kings 20:11, for example, we find in the Living Bible, "Don't count your chickens before they hatch!" But the Hebrew proverb in this passage is "One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off" (NIV). We can be sure that King Ahab did not have chickens in mind when he spoke these words! As the TEV puts it, "A real soldier does his bragging after a battle, not before it." Even this, however, is not quite accurate. Although it conveys the general truth of the proverb more clearly, it loses the image of taking off armor. Of the dynamic equivalent translations, I prefer the NIV rendering in 1 Kings 20:11 (compare NASB, NKJV, ESV), since proverbs, by their very nature, are meant to be understood through reflecting on the analogy drawn. In any case, the Living Bible translation is inaccurate not because it is idiomatic but because it goes beyond the author's intended meaning. - Makarios |

Hank, What a most convoluted rendering of Psalm 23! :-) I agree, these paraphrasers bring out a lot out of the Bible! Perhaps if these paraphrasers agreed with each other, then we'd have something.. :-) Blessings to you, Makarios |
