Greetings Mrs. Justme, I do not hold anything against your husband, and I believe that an apology is gracious even though it is not entirely warranted. I will keep you and your husband in prayer! (as well as Hank) Thank you for your compliments! One of these days, we will not have to worry so much about these earthly bodies that are falling apart as we speak, but we will rejoice in our new, imperishable bodies that our Lord will give us as we enter into His kingdom! Blessings to you, Makarios |

593 | Greek genitive cases of the word "of" | OT general | Makarios | 69082
Greetings Emmaus, my friend! Thank you for your response! So there is no "right" answer! :-) I realize that much of translation and of what we draw from scripture interpretation has a lot to do with our backgrounds and what persuasions and ideas that we initially have brought (unknowingly) to the process of interpretation. Therefore, I can see where you would say that Ephesians 1:13 and "promised Holy Spirit" would be more accurate (which is what I would glean from this verse), but you have also presented another idea that seems to substantiate the use of "Holy Spirit of promise", and the reasoning behind that is very good. So, shall we choose the present applicable sense or that of the future? Excellent question, my friend! :-) As I stated to Tim earlier, some of these genitive forms present no easy task when it comes to translation! :-) But it is highly revealing about Greek that the Greek genitive form would present us with so many different and equally as applicable interpretations! English hardly does any justice to try to convey such an array of 'choice' when it comes to genitive forms, and I am speaking as one who really does like English! :-) The New Jerusalem Bible indicates, "Holy Spirit of Promise." The Revised English Bible, the New American Bible and the NRSV state, "the promised Holy Spirit". The Duoay-Rheims indicates, "holy Spirit of promise." Therefore, I can see that Christian Catholics also dealt with a bit of a choice in regards to interpretation here as well. Thank you Emmaus, and Blessings to you! Makarios |

594 | Greek genitive cases of the word "of" | OT general | Makarios | 69105
Greetings Ray! Excellent comments regarding capitalization! The translations that pay careful attention to capitalization render Eph. 1:13 in differing ways.. NKJV - "the Holy Spirit of promise" NASB - "the Holy Spirit of promise" HCSB - "the promised Holy Spirit." Amplified - "the long-promised Holy Spirit." In all of the above translations, they have capitalized "Holy Spirit." However, in your 'personal copy', you do not have "Holy Spirit" capitalized. I'm curious: Why do you not capitalize "Holy Spirit" in your personal copy? Blessings to you, Ray! Makarios |

598 | Jesus earth: God/man or just man? | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 5158
Yes, Lionstrong, I agree! Each Member of the Trinity is fully God in their Own right. However, I also believe that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (all Members and fully God Themselves) are forever in union with each Other (though not in the same Person!) and wherever One of the Three are, the Others are There also. Therefore, Jesus is the First and the Last with the Father and the Holy Spirit. But Jesus is the only One of the Three of the Holy Trinity that has given us access to a Way that we can be in a right relationship with God. Therefore, the Father sent the Son and the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus, being in every way God. If you reject Jesus, then you reject both the Father and the Holy Spirit also. If you reject the Father and/or the Holy Spirit, then you also reject Jesus. In this way are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit inseparable and omniscient, each being fully and having all the qualities of God, and each (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) are distinct persons in the Trinity. Thank you for your answer! I do not claim to have all the answers or know everything, but I am just sharing what I believe as a fellow brother in Christ.
599 | Jesus earth: God/man or just man? | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 5852
Hey Ray, Good point! Yes, the way that you have explained it- the Three are here as well. Sorry about not capitalizing Way in the post, I try to fix all my typing errors but some slip by (here's a suggestion to Lockman - Study Bible Forum proofreader/spellchecker :) ) Anyways, what you said was both introspective and expounding on the Truth of scripture at the same time and I am in full agreement! I mentioned "Jesus was the only way" based on "No man can come to the Father but by Me", but I can see where the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit would all take a part in having a person come to know Jesus. I saw John 14:4 in the NKJV and noticed that it follows the KJV in this passage instead of the ASV 1901, which simply reads, "And whither I go, ye know the way." In my opinion, the NKJV repeats this type of 'carryover' sentence structure throughout its translation, which is another reason why I think that the NASB would prove to be superior to it in a best of seven series.. :)
600 | Gentle, humble -- but with a sword? | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 6351
In Matthew 10:34, Jesus is addressing His disciples here, saying that the foundation of their discipleship should be laid in such a temper and disposition, as would make sufferings very light and easy to them; and it was upon the condition of a preparedness for suffering, that Christ took them to be his followers vv. 37-39. He told them at first, that they were not worthy of Him, if they were not willing to part with all for Him. Men don't hesitate at those difficulties which necessarily come with their profession, and which they counted upon, when they undertook that profession; and they will either cheerfully submit to those fatigues and troubles, or disclaim the privileges and advantages of their professions. Now the terms are settled, if religion is worth anything, it is worth every thing: and to the price of it; and they who make it their business and bliss, will make every thing else yield to it. We must not be drawn from Christ by the love of our family or loved ones. We must prefer Christ above all else. In this way, a 'sword' is drawn, that is, do we prefer Christ or do we yield ourselves to that which lays claim of us; that being our relationships, job, family, security. In this way, this describes the 'high price' that Christ asks of discipleship. In Matt. 11:34, we must come to Jesus Christ as our Ruler and submit ourselves to Him. The 'rest' He promises is a release from the drudgery of sin, not from the service of God, but an obligation to the duty we owe to Him. Christ has a yoke for our necks, as well as a crown for our heads, and this yoke He expects we should take upon us and draw in. To call those who are weary and heavy laden, to take a yoke upon them, looks like adding affliction to the afflicted; but the pertinency of it lies in the word 'my': "You are under a yoke which makes you weary: shake that off and try mine, which will make you easy." So therefore, if we practice discipleship with the disposition which would make sufferings very light and easy, then we will be taking on the yoke of Christ, in which we will indeed find rest, His rest, and conduct ourselves in a conscientious obedience to His commands. Now this is the hardest part of our lesson, and we should not be afraid of His yoke. Matthew Henry Unabridged Commentary of the Bible (Hendrickson)
