3463 | How can we influence who is saved? | 1 Pet 2:9 | Makarios | 9385
Dear SisterM, I mean no disrespect whatsoever, but the subject of Election and predestination has already been covered very extensively here on this Forum.. I would humbly ask you to consult what has been written first please, before launching us into another lengthy discussion about what has already been explained several times. Thank you! Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |

3466 | DOES GOD HEAR ALL PRAYERS ? | 1 Pet 3:12 | Makarios | 112946
Greetings BradK, Excellent topical verse in John 9:31! In light of such verses as John 9:31, Job 27:9, and Proverbs 28:9, does this prove that God has "selective hearing"? :-) No, not at all. James 5:16 says, "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." [ESV] Notice that James implies that a person's spiritual condition has a relationship with their prayer. Therefore, does this mean that an "exception" was made with Manasseh (2 Chronicles 33:12-13)? This is an interesting thought.. While it is important that our spiritual lives reflect a loving and strong relationship with God that must be nutured daily through reading His Word and in prayer, a 'lacking' relationship with God is not always the reason for prayers seemingly not being answered. For every child of God, I do believe that God answers all of our prayers in one way or another, but not always in the way in which we prefer. Even the Apostle Paul did not always have his prayers answered at times (Acts 20:22-23,29; Romans 1:13; 2 Cor. 12:7-9), in the way that he would have liked. So take courage: seemingly unanswered prayer should not always be a sign that things are not "well" between you and God, if you are a Christian. But the prayers of those who do not believe, or have no relationship with Christ, will not always receive an answer, unless the Lord, in His Divine sovereignty, intervenes, as He did in 2 Chronicles 33:12-13. When Daniel prayed (Daniel 9:3-19), Daniel did so after he studied Scripture (9:2) and found the reason for Israel's exile (Lam. 1:18). Then, he confessed and repented of his people's sins and his own sins in his prayer. The Lord answered Daniel's prayer (Daniel 9:24-25) as announced by the angel Gabriel. Therefore, God does answer prayer (1 John 5:14,15) according to His time and purposes. So, why would the Lord answer Manasseh's prayer since He was evil, but does not seem to answer my prayer, after I have given my life over to Him? Manasseh was a king over many of the Lord's people, and his area of influence alone was significant for the Lord to reach many of those who were, perhaps, already praying for their king! So, you could see Manasseh's answered prayer as not only being a fulfillment of his prayer, but the prayers of many thousands in Israel were answered when God answered Manasseh's prayer (2 Chronicles 33:14-17). Therefore, God may, in grace, answer the prayers of non-Christians, but He has not promised to do so anywhere in Scripture. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3467 | Apologetics for every Christian? | 1 Pet 3:15 | Makarios | 8845
Hello again, Lionstrong! I believe that every Christian should be involved in the work of apologetics. It is truly unfortunate that many Christians today seem to be secret-agent Christians who have never "blown their cover" before an unregenerate world. The fact is, many Christians have little or no impact on their world for Christ or for Christian values. The task of apologetics begins with a single person- you. "Apologetics" comes from the Greek word apologia, which means 'defense.' Apologetics focuses on the defense of Christianity. Apologetics provides well-reasoned evidences to the nonbeliever as to why he should choose Christianity. Apologetics can be used to show the unbeliever that all other options really aren't options at all, since they are false. Apologetics can remove the mental roadblocks that prevent nonbelievers from responding to the gospel. Not only does it provide a defense for the faith, it also provides security to Christians who need to be sure that their faith is not a blind leap, but faith founded on fact. It is grounds for our faith and demonstrates why we believe what we believe. No wonder God calls each of us to "contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3). We must 'tell it like it is', taking Martin Luther's example. And you and I are called to give answers (1 Peter 3:15). The only way to be always prepared to give an answer is to have become equipped with answers. :) Nolan |

3468 | Jesus descended into hell? | 1 Pet 3:19 | Makarios | 15351
Yes Brian, excellent verse! Here's a little to support what you have already quoted.. "3:19 preached. Between Christ's death and resurrection, His living spirit went to the demon spirits bound in the abyss and proclaimed that, in spite of His death, He had triumphed over them. spirits in prison. This refers to fallen angels (demons), who were permanently bound because of heinous wickedness. The demons who are not so bound resist such a sentence (cf. Luke 8:31). In the end, they will all be sent to the eternal lake of fire (Matt. 25:41; Rev. 20:10)." (The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible, 1997 Word Publishing) --Nolan |

3470 | Do you have to be baptized to be saved? | 1 Pet 3:21 | Makarios | 12796
No, you don't. To quote JVH0212 one more time on this issue that just doesn't seem to "go away"... "NO! See Eph 2:8-9, Rom 3:28, John 5:24, etc. Eph 2:8-9 teaches that we are saved by grace through faith plus NOTHING. Not plus church membership, not plus good works, not plus water baptism, not plus anything. By grace through faith plus nothing. If anything, for your baptism to be valid, you need to be saved BEFORE you are baptized." --Nolan |

3471 | does baptism save us? 1Pet.3:21 | 1 Pet 3:21 | Makarios | 47573
Greetings Colin! It is good to interact with those who have come to faith in Christ by way of a different "journey" than my own, and I appreciate your sharing that you believe that Islam is a threat to the world. I would most certainly agree! But yes, I remember the dialogue that I and Questioner exchanged for a brief amount of time here at the Forum. It came down to the fact that I did not share his interest of "exploring" other 'faiths' by immersing myself in them. :-) So we basically parted ways, once we reached that irreversible 'junction.' Did you have a link that you would like to share with us? I believe that my Username "Makarios" is most likely the most misspelled Username in Forum history! But my REAL first name happens to rhyme nicely with yours, Colin! Blessings to you, Makarios |

3474 | devour you | 1 Pet 5:1 | Makarios | 9470
Keep watch! Satan wants to completely drown or swallow up our testimony. Satan is both cunning and cruel. He attacks when least expected and desires to destroy completely those whom he attacks. "The Greek word for 'devil' means 'slanderer'; thus a malicious enemy who maligns believers. He and his forces are always active, looking for opportunities to overwhelm the believer with temptation, persecution, and discouragement (cf. Psalm 22:13; 104:21; Ezek. 22:25). Satan sows discord, accuses God to men, men to God, and men to men. He will do what he can to drag the Christian out of fellowship with Christ and out of Christian service (cf. Job 1; Luke 22:3; John 13:27; 2 Cor. 4:3-4; Rev. 12). And he constantly accuses believers before God's throne, attempting to convince God to abandon them (Job 1:6-12; Rev. 12:10)." 3478 | The error addressed in 2 Peter | 2 Peter | Makarios | 224801
Greetings Beja! Yes, antinomianism is most definitely in error. But I believe that I can help you find much better Scripture verses to combat this other than 2 Peter. I believe that 2 Peter addresses a wide range of false teaching, not a reply to antinomianism alone. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3479 | the Christology of 2 Peter | 2 Pet 1:1 | Makarios | 28755
"2Pe 1:1-11 - Faith unites the weak believer to Christ, as really as it does the strong one, and purifies the heart of one as truly as of another; and every sincere believer is by his faith justified in the sight of God. Faith worketh godliness, and produces effects which no other grace in the soul can do. In Christ all fulness dwells, and pardon, peace, grace, and knowledge, and new principles, are thus given through the Holy Spirit. The promises to those who are partakers of a Divine nature, will cause us to inquire whether we are really renewed in the spirit of our minds; let us turn all these promises into prayers for the transforming and purifying grace of the Holy Spirit. The believer must add knowledge to his virtue, increasing acquaintance with the whole truth and will of God. We must add temperance to knowledge; moderation about worldly things; and add to temperance, patience, or cheerful submission to the will of God. Tribulation worketh patience, whereby we bear all calamities and crosses with silence and submission. To patience we must add godliness: this includes the holy affections and dispositions found in the true worshipper of God; with tender affection to all fellow Christians, who are children of the same Father, servants of the same Master, members of the same family, travellers to the same country, heirs of the same inheritance. Wherefore let Christians labour to attain assurance of their calling, and of their election, by believing and well-doing; and thus carefully to endeavour, is a firm argument of the grace and mercy of God, upholding them so that they shall not utterly fall. Those who are diligent in the work of religion, shall have a triumphant entrance into that everlasting kingdom where Christ reigns, and they shall reign with him for ever and ever; and it is in the practice of every good work that we are to expect entrance to heaven."
