3161 | Did Paul write the Laodiceans? | Col 4:16 | Makarios | 9226
Tim, this is an excellent post and a definitely a "keeper"! :) This does seem to be Paul's style of writing. One of the most interesting parts I find to this is the idea of "making your greetings sacred". "What's up" isn't very sacred. Should we be saying "What's God doing in your life?" The admonishment to greet with a holy kiss appears in Romans 16:16 , 1 Corinthians 16:20, 2 Corinthians 13:12 , and 1 Thessalonians 5:26. Was the ultimate goal of that to "make your greetings sacred"? Very good post! Nolan |

Blessings Tim! I agree, and when you stated, "Paul never met a period that he liked", I got a good laugh!! :) Thank you dear Brother! Nolan |

3163 | Did Paul write the Laodiceans? | Col 4:16 | Makarios | 9274
Greetings Tim! Thank you for your response to these 'supposed' letters.. I am glad that I now have the proper "Forum" to present these questions of mine and have them answered. I agree: only 1 Cor. 5:9 and Col. 4:16 specifically mention letters written previously to the ones that are obviously included in Scripture.. Thanks again dear Brother! Nolan |

3164 | Satan's Power (2:18) | 1 Thessalonians | Makarios | 9977
Good observations! Here's a few more.. Satan also knows that his time is short.. (Rev. 12:12) Believers will not be tempted beyond what they can bear (1 Cor. 10:13). Satan must yield to the authority of Christ (Matt. 28:18). |

3165 | Is there a free Bible? | 1 Thessalonians | Makarios | 156368
Greetings Kalos! I believe that the answer may lie in whatever 'manuscript family' you like.. Since I was brought up on the NIV (I know, I'm a youngin!), growing up with the NASB wasn't too much of a problem for me. But for those who really like the KJV better, remember the KJV, and have become quite familiar with it, the NKJV is a logical step forward and a very accurate translation itself. There are certain personal issues of mine that keep the NASB as "supreme" for me, but I do use the NKJV quite a lot in comparison with the NASB and ESV. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3166 | Is there a free Bible? | 1 Thessalonians | Makarios | 156432
Greetings Mark! From what I've read and seen from the World English Bible, I believe that it is a very good, highly accurate translation. I believe that it is based on the Byzantine Text tradition (Majority Text, Textus Receptus) as you have stated, the same tradition as the KJV and NKJV. But I'm not exactly sure if it is based on the Textus Receptus itself or mostly on the Majority Text. It is definitely more of a formal equivalence type of translation. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3168 | Eastern Orthodoxy Interest | 1 Thess 1:1 | Makarios | 97835
Greetings BeenSetFree, I'm sorry that you have not found a correspondant here from that church. It is not that Protestants do not care about your concerns. It is more along the lines that there are not too many of us here who have access to the kind of information that you are looking for, and as a result, have not been able to respond, rather than unwilling to make a response. Moreover, you asked your question at a time when most people are enjoying their weekend and going to church. That reduces the possibility that your question will be answered in the way (or the quickness) that you want it to be answered. "The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged," 2 Timothy 2:24 Blessings to you, Makarios |

3169 | Should the pastor be honored as a king. | 1 Thess 2:6 | Makarios | 9388
Greetings Irbroyles! The role of a pastor in the church and just exactly how a pastor should be 'viewed' is explained in Luke 22:24-30.. To be viewed as an effective leader, we must prove that not only is our service to others heartfelt and genuine, but it also must be 'viewed' as such by those whom are our 'flock'.. Only true servanthood will gain true 'followers' and disciples. If we could only grasp this concept, that our Lord alone deserves all the glory, then we would do so much better when we review our own witness in a sober and realistic light. "Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet.." John C. Maxwell, the senior pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church in Lemon Grove CA (largest Wesleyan Church in the Nation), states in his book entitled 'Developing The Leader Within You', "People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care." To respond to your question: No, the pastor should not be treated like a king. However, the pastor should be esteemed on the basis of the pastor's influence and example of servanthood which help define a pastor's overall leadership. Nolan |

3170 | exegetical study | 1 Thess 2:7 | Makarios | 28746
"1Th 2:7 - we were--Greek, "we were made" by God's grace. gentle--Greek, "mild in bearing with the faults of others" [TITTMANN]; one, too, who is gentle (though firm) in reproving the erroneous opinions of others (2Ti_2:24). Some of the oldest manuscripts read, "we became little children" (compare Mat_18:3-4). Others support the English Version reading, which forms a better antithesis to 1Th_2:6-7, and harmonizes better with what follows; for he would hardly, in the same sentence, compare himself both to the "infants" or "little children," and to "a nurse," or rather, "suckling mother." Gentleness is the fitting characteristic of a nurse. among you--Greek, "in the midst of you," that is, in our intercourse with you being as one of yourselves. nurse--a suckling mother. her--Greek, "her own children" (compare 1Th_2:11). So Gal_4:19." [Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary] - Nolan |

3171 | Tator Bug, what does God say? | 1 Thess 4:5 | Makarios | 112840
Tater Bug, Searcher56 is absolutely right! Hebrews 13:4 "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous." If you are "burning with passion" before marriage, then you are playing with fire with your soul (Proverbs 6:27-32). Your emotions cannot be trusted (Hosea 2:13; 2 Tim. 3:2)! A true, long lasting relationship is built upon so much more than physical infatuation that only lasts for however long you are together, or he leaves after sex or pregnancy. If you want to 'attract' a man for a long lasting relationship, then.. "Do not let your adorning be external- the braiding of hair, the wearing of gold, or the putting on of clothing- but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious." 1 Peter 3:3-4 [ESV] If a man is attracted to you because of your relationship with God (and you him), then that is a basis for a possible courtship for marriage. Attraction because of 'passion' or any sexual activity is not a basis for marriage, but it will, in fact, "force" you to make a decision: to either 'stop', or break it off because you become pregnant, or get married because you become pregnant. In all of the above choices, sexual abstinence is clearly the BEST choice in a dating relationship, since you would still have control over your relationship (with the Lord's help), to have the Lord tell you in His time whether or not the guy is the right man for you. But, if you have passion, arousal, and everything else coming into the relationship, then you will no longer have any control whatsoever over the relationship, and it will take on a life of its own, to a destructive end. I am presently involved in a courtship with a Godly woman, who I am attracted to because of her relationship with God (and vice versa). And we have made a pact before the Lord not to engage in any passionate or sexual activity until the vows have been made and exchanged, till death do us part. Therefore, we will be sure that 'attraction' or 'passion' does not force us to become married, but, if we become married, then we will do it on God's timing and terms, not our own. And this will ensure a successful long term marriage for us and for both of our families, who have become very involved in this courtship process. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3173 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14841
Thank you, EdB.. I simply did not realize that this discussion had the same "potential" to be as volatile as a Calvinism/Arminianism discussion.. Thank you! We all must be ready and not be left behind.. :) Nolan |

3174 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14854
Hello Tim! Wow! You have given us a lot to begin with! As far as the Reign of Anti-Christ is concerned, the "restrainer" needs to 'step aside' first (2 Thess. 2:6-7) so that the Anti-Christ can take control. Then the Lord will slay Anti-Christ with "the breath of His mouth" by the "appearance of His coming" (2 Thess. 2:8). This leads me to believe that the Lord will slay Anti-Christ at the instant that He comes back, while rapturing the church.. Would this be a correct understanding in the "mid-trib" position? This interpretation of 1 and 2 Thessalonians is what is convincing me to be "Mid-trib" rather than "Pre-trib" and the fact that the two witnesses must take part in the rapture also. But none of this can happen until the full number of Gentiles are saved (Romans 11:25, Luke 21:24). When all of the Gentiles who will accept Christ have accepted Him, then I am correct in thinking that this must come first before the Jesus' Second Coming? Good discussion! Nolan |

3176 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14861
Greetings Tim! Ok.. What would be the 'Event' that finally triggers the first 3 1/2 years? Would this be the "covenant" spoken of in Daniel 9:27? 27“And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” (NASB) Also, who is the "restrainer" in 2 Thess. 2:6-7? I have thought that this would be the Holy Spirit. If it is the Holy Spirit, then how can this be if the Holy Spirit will be with us forever (John 14:16)? If the Holy Spirit has to "step aside", then would this not mean that He has to leave the earth? These are all honest questions! I seek no controversy or argument, I am still seeking to sort all of this out. Blessings! Nolan |

3177 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14867
Greetings Tim! Yes, this is also along my line of thinking as well.. But it is good to take the whole of Scripture and see what it says so that we could come up with a basic view of events that are based upon Scripture. Thank you for your answers! Nolan |

3178 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14870
Thank you EdB! So according to the "pre-trib" position, what is the "trigger" that sets off Daniel's 70th week? Can it be found in Scripture? Blessings, Nolan |
||||||
3179 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14875
Greetings EdB, My understanding is that when Christ returns, the rapture and the slaying of Anti-Christ also happens at or near the same instant in time.. Then the 'dead in Christ' who are raised will be in the Millennial Kingdom as well as those who are raptured at the beginning of the second 3 1/2 years.. Only those who have rejected God will go through the second 3 1/2 years and endure the Great White Throne judgment. But this is only my "working understanding" this is continuing to develop.. Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |

3180 | Order of events at the 2nd Coming? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Makarios | 14878
Hello EdB, Will God really allow the City that bears his name, Jerusalem (1 Kings 11:36), to be conquered by this united front against Israel, when Ezekiel 38 and 39 says that the invaders will be destroyed? This is not a "debate", my friend! I am honestly seeking an answer here to this question. Or is it that Christ will come in response to Anti-Christ's exaltation of himself as "the messiah" (2 Thess. 2:4)? I also agree with Tim, the Calvinism/Arminism debate definitely has the potential for 'volatility' since it centered around salvation, but this current discussion of "last things" does not, and I do not see how anyone should get 'fired up' about disagreeing with the chronology of these events, since it has absolutely nothing to do with salvation (The only thing is: we must be prepared! :-) ). Blessings my friend! Nolan |
