3121 | are we saved by grace alone? | Phil 2:13 | Makarios | 9663
You cited Philippians 2:13... The Believer's Study Bible comments about this verse, "2:12-13: These verses must be read together for a proper understanding. "Work out your own salvation" means to "work out," not "work for." A "works salvation" is not being taught. The idea is to progress to the finish or completion in spiritual growth and maturity. This process is what the Bible calls "sanctification." It should be noted that v. 12 makes it clear we are to be active, not passive, in this process. However, though we are active, we are not alone. Verse 13 reminds us again that the entire salvation process is the work of a sovereign God and the result of His grace. "For it is God who works in you" is the ultimate ground and basis for our salvation." |

3123 | What is "this attitude?" | Phil 3:15 | Makarios | 93285
Mommapbs, I am glad that you asked! Yes! We need to continue to inspire and encourage each other to move "forward" in Christ, to "press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus", just as Paul was doing in Philippians 3:12-16. And if we continue this example, continuing in the same "attitude" with each other, then we will be able to "keep living by that same standard to which we have attained." :-) But if we have a different attitude concerning these things, then the Lord will make that clear to us also.. Blessings to you! Makarios |

3125 | study on Phil. 4:4-9 | Phil 4:4 | Makarios | 28750
"Phi 4:2-9 - Let believers be of one mind, and ready to help each other. As the apostle had found the benefit of their assistance, he knew how comfortable it would be to his fellow-labourers to have the help of others. Let us seek to give assurance that our names are written in the book of life. Joy in God is of great consequence in the Christian life; and Christians need to be again and again called to it. It more than outweighs all causes for sorrow. Let their enemies perceive how moderate they were as to outward things, and how composedly they suffered loss and hardships. The day of judgment will soon arrive, with full redemption to believers, and destruction to ungodly men. There is a care of diligence which is our duty, and agrees with a wise forecast and due concern; but there is a care of fear and distrust, which is sin and folly, and only perplexes and distracts the mind. As a remedy against perplexing care, constant prayer is recommended. Not only stated times for prayer, but in every thing by prayer. We must join thanksgivings with prayers and supplications; not only seek supplies of good, but own the mercies we have received. God needs not to be told our wants or desires; he knows them better than we do; but he will have us show that we value the mercy, and feel our dependence on him. The peace of God, the comfortable sense of being reconciled to God, and having a part in his favour, and the hope of the heavenly blessedness, are a greater good than can be fully expressed. This peace will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus; it will keep us from sinning under troubles, and from sinking under them; keep us calm and with inward satisfaction. Believers are to get and to keep a good name; a name for good things with God and good men. We should walk in all the ways of virtue, and abide therein; then, whether our praise is of men or not, it will be of God. The apostle is for an example. His doctrine and life agreed together. The way to have the God of peace with us, is to keep close to our duty. All our privileges and salvation arise in the free mercy of God; yet the enjoyment of them depends on our sincere and holy conduct. These are works of God, pertaining to God, and to him only are they to be ascribed, and to no other, neither men, words, nor deeds." [Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary] - Nolan |

3126 | How do u stay pure but have pleasure | Phil 4:8 | Makarios | 56625
Greetings Justme! Many of these "advice" questions that are asked here are more properly dealt with in a 'one on one' situation with someone who knows the 'Questioner' personally, such as a pastor, Christian friend or family member. However, I can see where asking such a question would propose a bit of "anonymity" on a Bible Forum such as this, since we have never personally met, and I have yet to meet anyone on this Forum "face to face".. However, even though I have never met anyone here 'up close and personally', the fact remains that this Forum remains very public, and for all to see! If you have not noticed, the words that we put here do not go away, nor are they erased.. Therefore, I think it is worth everyone's consideration to try to keep the content of this Forum respectable and honorable, and to handle such questions with humility and grace, rather than to send the 'Questioner' away in discouragement. Wouldn't you agree? Blessings to you, Makarios |

And here is the commentary from Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible for John 15:5.. "John 15:5 - "I am the vine - John 15:1." "Without me ye can do nothing - The expression "without me" denotes the same as separate from me. As the branches, if separated from the parent stock, could produce no fruit, but would immediately wither and die, so Christians, if separate from Christ, could do nothing. The expression is one, therefore, strongly implying dependence. The Son of God was the original source of life, John 1:4. He also, by his work as Mediator, gives life to the world John 6:33, and it is by the same grace and agency that it is continued in the Christian. We see hence: (1.) That to him is due all the praise for all the good works the Christian performs. (2.) That they will perform good works just in proportion as they feel their dependence on him and look to him. And, (3.) That the reason why others fail of being holy is because they are unwilling to look to him, and seek grace and strength from him who alone is able to give it." - Makarios |

"Col 1:13 - from--Greek, "out of the power," out of the sphere in which his power is exercised. darkness--blindness, hatred, misery [BENGEL]. translated--Those thus translated as to state, are also transformed as to character. Satan has an organized dominion with various orders of powers of evil (Eph_2:2; Eph_6:12). But the term "kingdom" is rarely applied to his usurped rule (Mat_12:26); it is generally restricted to the kingdom of God. his dear Son--rather as Greek, "the Son of His love": the Son on whom His love rests (Joh_17:26; Eph_1:6): contrasted with the "darkness" where all is hatred and hateful." 3135 | Does it include all suffering? | Col 1:24 | Makarios | 44793
Greetings again Cheryl, There was one other point that I forgot to add.. All suffering that is done in His name (by Christians) is that which is covered by Him and is part of His afflictions. The sufferings of those who do evil and the consequences of the sins of the unsaved are not part of His afflictions and are not covered by Christ, since they are not children of God. However, when a person does become saved and is then a child of God, then Christ's blood and atonement covers over all of their past sin! And then they also take part in suffering for His name. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3136 | Seeking out suffering? | Col 1:24 | Makarios | 44888
Greetings Cheryl, And thank you for your response! I believe that perhaps we should go back to the 'drawing board' and define what exactly it means to "suffer for Christ." And then, when we have came to a Biblical definition, then we could proceed to define some of these fine elements that we have both been describing in association with 'suffering in His name.' If I were to begin such a study, then I could think of no better way to begin than with a study of the life of the apostle Paul. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3137 | Which kinds of suffering? | Col 1:24 | Makarios | 44961
Greetings Meusings, I most certainly agree! We do not need to go looking for suffering.. :-) If we do, then could it REALLY be called "suffering"? I would think not. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3138 | The body, and the Head of the body | Col 1:24 | Makarios | 45065
Well, this does happen to be your question! :-) Did you perceive that most of the Scripture references in the Thompson's Chain Topics supported all of the examples that you have previously cited? For me, for me to "suffer for Christ", it is much different. I do not perceive losing a job or the consequences of my own sin as being included in the sufferings or afflictions of Christ. Most of all that has to do with my own stupidity and flaws as a human being. But I do know that whenever I am perceived negatively or rejected on the basis of my Christianity, then yes, I see that as a bit of what we are talking about. But I cannot and will not hold Christ responsible for my own shortcomings and for those things that I knew better than to do. Christ is not responsible for my sin, I alone am. And I must truly humble myself and say the same thing about my sin that He does. And since I have sworn complete allegiance to Christ, then I must also endure the spite of Satan and this world, which, in turn, causes Christians to be wary, even though Christians are not directed to offer spite in return for these 'sufferings.' These and other thoughts of mine help me to better define what suffering for Christ is and how that should be separated from that which I have brought upon myself, all by myself. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3140 | 3 baptisms or 1, or... | Col 2:12 | Makarios | 23069
Dear charis, No, no, no.. I believe that you have completely misunderstood me.. It would help to clarify if you told me what you believe about baptism. From your responses, I would come to the conclusion that you believe that baptism by water is essential to salvation. I would strongly disagree with you there, my friend. Water baptism is a command that the Lord has given us (Matt. 28:19, Acts 2:38) and we undergo it through obedience to Him and for proclaiming to the world that we are now His. That is what makes water baptism special, and the same goes for circumcision. Its not the outward affirmation that takes place (water baptism) that saves us. It is the inner transformation inside of our souls- that is what saves us!!! Look at the criminal on the cross: did he have a chance to be baptized by water? No, he did not. So was he saved? Yes, he was! (Luke 23:39-43). I believe that I made it explicitly clear in my last note, but I will simply have to try again. Both of these baptisms- Baptism by the Holy Spirit and baptism by fire, are both encompassed together as one baptism, one washing, that takes place at the moment of salvation. Yes, they are all equally effective before the Lord, but they act upon the believer as one baptism, one washing (Eph. 4:5), which occurs at the moment of salvation. You asked, "Is the baptism of fire constant?" The process of sanctification begins after the moment of salvation, and there is no need for us to be constantly re-baptized by fire.. No, the baptism by fire is not "constant", but our hearts are forever changed! Yes, water baptism is not something that is essential. Charis, water baptism is not essential for salvation. I don't know how much clearer I can be than that. Yes, I believe that the baptism by the Holy Spirit is synonymous with salvation, since we can only be baptized by the Holy Spirit if we come to salvation in our Lord, and we cannot attain salvation unless we also undergo baptism by the Holy Spirit (John 3). I have come to the conclusion a long time ago that we undergo one washing, one baptism at the moment of salvation. Water baptism is important, but it is not a prerequisite for salvation. And until you can prove me wrong by using Scripture, then I will hold to that belief. Nolan |
