3501 | "Let Us make man in Our image." | Gen 1:26 | Makarios | 7642
Excellent observation! Ryrie's Study Bible goes on to say, "Us . . . Our. Plurals of majesty." Nelson's NKJV Study Bible states, "'Let Us make' is emphatic. It emphasizes the majesty of the speaker. Furthermore, the use of a plural for God allows for the later revelation of the Trinity (see 11:7; Matt. 28:19). The Us cannot refer to the angels that are present with God because man is made in the image of God alone, not also that of the angels. 'in Our image': What is the image of God in man? The traditional view is that God's image is certain moral, ethical, and intellectual abilities. A more recent view, based on Hebrew grammar and the knowledge of the ancient Middle East, interprets the phrase as meaning "Let us make man as our image" (the Hebrew preposition in this phrase can be translated 'as'). In ancient times an emperor might command statues of himself to be placed in remote parts of his empire. These symbols would declare that these areas were under his power and reign. So God placed humankind as living symbols of Himself on earth to represent His reign. This interpretation fits well with the command that follows- to reign over all that God has made. 'according to Our likeness': This phrase draws attention to the preceding figure of speech. Since God is Spirit (John 4:24), there can be no "image" or "likeness" of Him in the normal sense of these words. Indeed, image-making was later strongly prohibited because of the clear ties that has with idolatry (see Ex. 20:4-6). We may not make images of God for He has already done so! We are His images; it is we who are in His likeness. This is the reason God values people so much: We are made to reflect His majesty on earth. 'have dominion': Rule as God's regent. That is, people are to rule as God would- wisely and prudently- over all that God has made (fish, birds, cattle, and so on)." |

3502 | The Spirit of God active in creation | Gen 1:2 | Makarios | 7641
To follow up on the "Spirit of God" in Genesis 1:2, Zondervan's NASB Study Bible comments, "Spirit of God. He was active in creation, and His creative power continues today (see Job 33:4; Psalm 104:30)." Ryrie's NASB Expanded Edition Study Bible also adds, "moving over. I.e., in the sense of protecting and participating in the creative work (the same Hebrew word is used in Deut. 32:11)." God in all His fullness, including the Father and the Son along with the Holy Spirit, was present at the event of creation.
3503 | Leave behind anything of no value. | Matt 8:22 | Makarios | 7640
This verse is interesting.. Ryrie's Study Bible puts it this way, "Following the Lord required full commitment; therefore let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead." And I believe that this is what Aliyu meant when he wrote his post on 04-30-01 at 02:29. Nelson's NKJV Study Bible goes on to say, "This passage most likely describes a follower whose father was still alive, because by Levitical law the man would not be out in public if his father had just died. His father was aged, so the man wanted to go to his home, wait for his father to die, and then follow Christ. Jesus' answer means that we must never make excuses for refusing to follow Him. There is no better time than the present." Therefore, this passage serves to further show the level of commitment that is demanded by Jesus' discipleship. |

3505 | Will we recognize each other in glory? | Luke 24:1 | Makarios | 7638
Good observation.. Yes, I do not believe that the Lord "kept" them from recognizing Him, its just that they were shaken up and did not realize that it was Him. Nelson's NKJV Study Bible puts it this way, "24:11.. Skepticism reigned among the disciples. It is clear that they did not expect a resurrection." And 24:24, "As far as the disciples were concerned, there was no decisive proof of Jesus' resurrection. They wanted to see the resurrected Jesus. Thomas was not alone in his doubts (see John 20:25)".. So this 'proof' that they needed was not revealed to them until Jesus made it obvious to them that He rose from the dead indeed!
3506 | "the church's list" of dependent widows | 1 Tim 5:9 | Makarios | 7630
The MacArthur Study Bible comments on this verse, "In NT culture, 60 was considered retirement age. By that age, older women would have completed their child rearing and would have the time, maturity, and character to devote their lives in service to God and the church. They also would not be likely to remarry and become preoccupied with that commitment. 'be taken into the number'. More clearly rendered, "be put on the list." This was not a list of those widows eligible for specially recognized church support (all widows in the church who had no other means of support were; v.3), but rather those eligible for specially recognized church ministry (cf. Titus 2:3-5). 'the wife of one man'. Lit "one-man woman" (cf. 3:2,12). It does not exclude women who have been married more than once (cf. v. 14; 1 Cor. 7:39), but it refers to a woman totally devoted and faithful to her husband, a wife who had displayed purity of thought and action in her marriage."

3509 | no first day in the greek | Luke 24:1 | Makarios | 7627
Every Bible translation contains "But on the first day of the week" or something to that effect. Also, by looking at the Greek itself, one can see where the translators derived the phrase. Zondervan's NASB Study Bible comments on this verse, "'first day of the week'. Sunday began by Jewish time at sundown on Saturday. Spices could then be bought (Mark 16:1), and they were ready to set out early the next day. When the women started out, it was dark (John 20:1), and by the time they arrived at the tomb, it was still early dawn (see Matt. 28:1; Mark 16:2)."
3510 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | Makarios | 7626
Ryrie's Study Bible comments on this verse, "'born of water and the Spirit.' Various interpretations have been suggested for the meaning here of 'water': (1) it refers to baptism as a requirement for salvation. However, this would contradict many other NT passages (Eph. 2:8-9); (2) it stands for the act of repentance that John the Baptizer's baptism signified; (3) it refers to natural birth (specifically, the fluid released when the amniotic sac breaks prior to labor); thus it means "unless one is born the first time by water and the second time by the Spirit"; (4) it means the Word of God, as in John 15:3; (5) it is a synonym for the Holy Spirit and may be translated, "by water, even the Spirit." One truth is clear: the new birth is from God through the Spirit." The MacArthur Study Bible suggests, "Jesus referred not to literal water here but to the need for "cleansing" (e.g., Ezek. 36:24-27). When water is used figuratively in the OT, it habitually refers to renewal or spiritual cleansing, especially when used in conjunction with 'spirit' (Num. 19:17-19; Psalm 51:9,10; Isaiah 32:15, 44:3-5, 55:1-3; Jer. 2:13; Joel 2:28,29). Thus, Jesus made reference to the spiritual washing or purification of the soul, accomplished by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God at the moment of salvation (cf. Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5), required for belonging to His kingdom." |

3511 | The Prayer Jesus Never Prayed | Matt 6:9 | Makarios | 7625
Very well said, Hank! Nelson's NKJV Study Bible also comments, "'In this manner' does not mean to pray using only these words, but to pray in this way. People often reduce this prayer to empty recitation- exactly what the Lord said not to do (v. 7). The prayer is composed of six requests. The first three ask for the kingdom to come (vv. 9,10) and the last three are for God to meet the needs of His people until the kingdom arrives (vv. 11-13)."
3512 | intro to Christ | Luke 7:27 | Makarios | 7624
Here's a little more commentary on Malachi 3:1.. "'My messenger'. It was a custom of the Near Eastern kings to send messengers before them to remove obstacles to their visit. Employing a wordplay on the name of Malachi, ("the LORD'S messenger"), the Lord Himself announced He was sending one who would "prepare the way before Me." This is "the voice of one crying in the wilderness" (Isaiah 40:3) and the Elijah of Malachi 4:5 who comes before the Lord. The NT clearly identifies him as John the Baptist (cf. Matt. 3:3, 11:10,14, 17:12; Mark 1:2; Luke 1:17, 7:26,27; John 1:23)." The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible. |

3514 | asking for things in vain, over and over | Matt 6:7 | Makarios | 7622
"Prayers are not to be merely recited, nor are our words to be repeated thoughtlessly, or as if they were automatic formulas. But this is not a prohibition against importunity (see notes on Luke 11:1-8)." The MacArthur Study Bible

3516 | how to be saved | Rom 10:9 | Makarios | 7620
Yes, Todd, and if they come to this verse after first realizing that they are sinners (Rom. 3:23), and knowing that their penalty for their sin is death (Rom. 6:23), then they will be in a better position to understand that Christ paid the penalty for their sins (1 Peter 3:18) and that they must repent! (Acts 3:19) When they accept Christ by faith (Ephesians 2:8), then they will confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord! (Rom. 10:9,13) Praise God! :)
3517 | God saved His best for last | Mark 12:6 | Makarios | 7619
Yes, I agree that judgment will come upon all who do not respect or reject the Son of God. However, if you look in Mark 12:8, you see that they killed the son there also, but as you have pointed out, the man who sent his son did not have God's foreknowledge that this would indeed happen to his son. Good observation! |

3519 | Evangelism has one main task. | Rom 10:13 | Makarios | 7617
"Paul qouted Joel (2:32) to further emphasize that salvation is available for people of all nations and races. 'calls on the name.' This familiar OT expression (e.g., Psalm 79:5,6; 105:1; 116:4,5) does not refer to some desperate cry to just any deity but to the one true God as He has revealed Himself- a revelation which now includes recognition of Jesus as Lord (v. 9) and of the One who raised up Jesus from the dead (v.9)." 3520 | 2 Timothy 2:15 is our mandate! | Revelation | Makarios | 7616
Yes, the mandate is clear! MacArthur's Study Bible says, concerning this verse, "Be diligent. This word denotes zealous persistence in accomplishing a goal. Timothy, like all who preach or teach the Word, was to give his maximum effort to impart God's Word completely, accurately, and clearly to his hearers. This is crucial to counter the disastrous effects of false teaching (vv. 14,16,17). 'rightly dividing' Lit. "cutting it straight"- a reference to the exactness demanded by such trades as carpentry, masonry, and Paul's trade of leather working and tentmaking. Precision and accuracy are required in biblical interpretation, beyond all other enterprises because the interpreter is handling God's Word. Anything less is shameful." |
