421 | Please explain John 19:27 | John 19:26 | JCrichton | 107929
Hi, Rowdy! I understand your illustration, but my point is that we cannot refer to the Jewish society in terms of today's values (the elderly being housed en masse by a society that is afraid of death: getting old). Even the early Church had continued with the particular Jewish tradition (Matthew 15:4) of tending to the elderly: 1 Timothy 5:16. So if we believe that Jesus' siblings were blood relations of Mary would not one of them fulfill their obligation to care for their mother, unless Jesus' bequeathal to John has to reflect Revelation 12:17? God Bless! |

Hi, Morant61! It is also worth noting that James was not referred to as a relative of the Lord until after Jesus' bequeathal of Mary to John who happened to have a brother named James! God Bless! |

423 | Please explain John 19:27 | John 19:26 | JCrichton | 107973
Correct!, I should have said that James notoriety was not evident till after the bequeathal of Mary. But my point is still valid: Matthew 13:55 name James, Joseph, Simon and Judas and sisters (which implies at least two) so between at least 6 brothers and sisters they could not fulfill a Jewish Law that required them to care for their widowed mother (Joseph is not mentioned except as reference point of Jesus upbringing--never as a personality during Jesus' public years; so it can be surmised that Joseph had died and that Mary was a widower)--even if they lived in extreme poverty! God Bless! |

424 | Is THE SABBATH ON A SATURDAY | John 20:19 | JCrichton | 109297
Where did they go, to Church or to a synagogue? Do you remember Jesus' command on sacrificing animals... still it seemed to be a commandment of the Law that was swept away... How many Apostles and disciples continue to frequent the Jewish synagogues in order to preach, pray and live a life of devotion? Was there a written order by Jesus to stop frequenting them? Did the early Christians who gathered in forests, caves, private dwellings, and other deserted areas, refuse to sing songs and play musical instruments because there was a special command by Jesus to stop singing psalms and using musical instruments? You can uphold the Sabbath as Saturday and be content and allow me to uphold any other day that I choose as the Sabbath and be content--God did not rest on Saturday, HE RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY! (Read and study the following: Acts 20:7-14; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2; Romans 14:6. God Bless! |

425 | Is THE SABBATH ON A SATURDAY | John 20:19 | JCrichton | 109395
My point is that Jesus never commanded the sacrificial customs to be terminated! You use "show me in the Bible" statments and yet you yourself refuse to accept that there are things that were not written and are still divinely inspired: i.e.: Did Jesus call his apostles Christians? Not till John's Apocalyptic Revelation do you hear Christ say that they would have a name! So at Antioch someone(s) coined the word Christian(s) in reference to those that represented the Christ! Should the apostles and other disciples have rejected the term since there was no command from Jesus to call themselves Christians? We can go on for the rest of our natural existence trying to out think each other--Salvation will not come from vain arguments! My last words on this topic: One person thinks that some days are holier than others, and another thinks them all equal. Let each of them be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who makes special observance of a particular day observes it in honour of the Lord. (Romans 14:5-6) God Bless! |

426 | Is THE SABBATH ON A SATURDAY | John 20:19 | JCrichton | 109482
Again, keeping with the "literal" tone and "seeking direct Biblical context": not one of the cited passeges, with the exception of Acts 11:26, mentions the disciples as Christians; and even then, not by Jesus' direct command! I am not suggesting that Jesus is not God! I am saying that Jesus Christ never said to the apostles and the rest of His disciples that they would be called Christians. Not until Revelation 2:17 does Jesus Christ directly states that He shall give us a new name. From the Old Testament on there are anotations that speak on this particular subject but Jesus never stated it Himself until Revelation 2:17. We have to remember that during the Old Testament's revelations (prophecies and interaction of God with Israel) Lord or LORD was reserved almost exclusively to Yahweh (YHWH). God Bless! |

427 | Is THE SABBATH ON A SATURDAY | John 20:19 | JCrichton | 109485
If you go to my original post on this subject you will find that that is exactly what I am saying. Jesus did not leave an unabridged manual for the Church outside of a few direct commands, as with Peter. What He did emphasize was that there would come another Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, who would teach and remind us about His Word: but the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. (John 14:26) Also see: John 14:16-17; 15:26; and specially 16:7-15! What I am suggesting is what I have said from the beginning: there are Truths not yet revealed to the apostles and disciples by Jesus; these Truths were to be revealed by the Holy Spirit. When we follow Christ we are expected to accept the Spirit of Truth (the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit) because He will reveal to us that which Jesus could not reveal to us then (John 16:12-13). God Bless! |

428 | We ran from a major city. | Acts | JCrichton | 148545
Hi! I read through the chapter sited... could not find the answer to your question... I tried an on-line Bible, using a variation on the text from your question (We ran away from a major city because of the man in charge...), no results! If you are still looking for that Biblical passage, could you expand on the question? (name of city, man in charge, etc.) God Bless! Angel |

429 | Is Jesus always the Light? | Acts | JCrichton | 151667
Hi, Seedling! Jesus is speaking on the thing to come... for as long as He is in the world, as the Lamb of God, He is the center of the world... yet, there will be a time when the prince of this world will seek Jesus followers (Genesis 3:15; Revelation 12); it will be up to Jesus' disciples to become the light/s of the world, in Jesus stead, so that man can be brought into the fold... God is Light and in Him there's no darkness (1 John 1:5) and since Jesus is God, He is the Light! God Bless! Angel |

430 | did Jesus desend to hell and preach | Acts 2:31 | JCrichton | 133053
"it seems that Hades consists both of a place of torment and a place of 'paradise'." Hi, James! I have quite some problem understanding your statement... is Abraham in hell (Hades)? Is hell an extension of heaven? What I understand from Scripture is totally different from your statement: Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's embrace. The rich man also died and was buried. 'In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his embrace. So he cried out, "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames." (Luke 16:22-24) For your statement to be correct, than Abraham must not be in Heaven or Heaven coexists within a boundary with hell (Hades)... and all the holy people of God who die must end up in Abrahams embrace (some versions have bosoms)... additionally, it must not be a great distance of separation since the rich man recognizes both Lazarus and Abraham by sight, and is able to communicate readily with them... Could this had been just a study tool? I mean, how much moisture would Lazarus' finger must hold in order to relieve the burning suffered by the rich man? Jumping to the assertion that Paradise is next to Hades (hell) would be limiting Jesus' Divinity--God is everywhere at once (Ephesians 1:23; Romans 11:36) so clearly Jesus could promise Paradise at the moment of His death and still preach to the spirit (not angels) of those who died prior to His incarnation, death and resurrection (1 Peter 3:19-20; 4:6). There is no limit to God's Omnipotense! (Matthew 19:26; 1 Corinthians 15:6) God Bless! Angel |

431 | Holy Spirit / Tongues for Today? | Acts 2:39 | JCrichton | 150980
Hi, Huron! The Amish, as well as others, believe that technology should not be part of the Believers' life... there are various interpretations of Scriptures that, for the most part, are extremist views that hinder rather than aide man in worshipping God... There were Christians buying into extemes way back when.. Paul addressed the issue of speaking in strange tongues as follows: 1 Corinthians 14 :2 those who speak in them speak to God not others; :4 they help themselves only; :5 I would rather that you proclaim God's Word; :12 aspire for the gifts of the Spirit with which you can help the Church; :19 in Church worship I would rather speak five words that can be understood by all, than thousands in strange tongues; :22 speaking in strange tongues is proof for unbelievers (those who reject God) not for believers; while proclaiming God's message is proof for believers! I've paraphrased these verses, for the unedited version read 1 Corinthians 14:1-25; for mandates on orderly service with reference to speaking in tongues, read 1 Corinthians 14:26-33--note that Paul specifically calls to order that no more than two or three should speak in tongues, and that there should be an order (not everyone all at once); he also cautions that if there is none who can interprete then those speaking in tongues should be doing it in a quiet manner in order to facilitate and orderly service... it is understood that any revelation must be for the edification of the Church--pesonal revelations or any other revelation is unwarranted! Now, since the Holy Spirit did not just appear on earth for the sole purpose of introducing the disciples to the Jewish and Gentile communities, we must understand that He is able to give any Gift to any member of Christ's Body; the gift of tongues is no exception--there's no time restriction to the Holy Spirit's function in the Church! Sadly, we take the Holy Scripture to extremes and we create theologies that, in essence, places God under our control: speaking in tongues; handling serpents; transportation to Heaven; discerning spirits; having the keys to Heaven, life, wealth, health, longevity, exclusive relationships with Christ, the Father, the Holy Spirit; personal revelations; special knowledge of the future... all for the asking, by following some formula or "little known secrets" of the Holy Scripture... When we claim to be able to do something that other Christians cannot do or when we claim that to be in Christ a person must do precisely what we demand of them to do... does that not verge on egocentrism? Speaking in tongues is possible for Christians... but the lack of the ability to speak in tongues does not demonstrate lack of faith or some form of disenfranchisement from God! It is the Holy Spirit who determines what Gift to bestow upon the Believer and when (1 Corinthians 12:4-11); He will impart you, me or any other Christian with the ability that we need to edify the Church... no one can demand or subscribe to a special forum of "self-service" gifts! God Bless! Angel |

432 | Holy Spirit / Tongues for Today? | Acts 2:39 | JCrichton | 151019
Hi, Huron! Peter is not saying that all who are baptized and receive the Holy Spirit will be speaking in tongues as a sign that they are part of the Body of Christ... what he is saying is that all Believers throughout time till the return of our Lord will receive the Holy Spirit--this is the same premise made by Christ (John 14:16-17--compare similar inclusion in 2 Timothy 1:7-9 and John 17:15-21); Scripture never stipulates that all who were baptized and received the Holy Spirit spoke in strange languages or that they performed any extraordinary signs! God Bless! Angel |

433 | Holy Spirit / Tongues for Today? | Acts 2:39 | JCrichton | 151070
Hi, Huron! Not all were convinced... some just simply played it down as though the Apostles were drunk or crazy... this is the reason why Peter corrected them (Acts 2:14-42)... true, wonderous things happened to demonstrate the Coming of the Holy Spirit... but we must use reason when reading the Holy Scripture: *We must understand that neither all of Jesus' nor all of His disciples' accomplishments and teachings were recorded (way back when there was no such thing as printing pressess and copying machines, everything was done within certain constraints). * Not every single even occurred in a single formatted fashion. * The Holy Spirit did not come to perform wholesale signs and miracles. * There's always a purpose for God's revelations and demonstrations of Power/Authority. * The Holy Spirit is with us forever, till the end of times! I offer the following passages where baptism took place but there was no mention of any special signs: Acts 8:12-26; 8:26-39; 9:18-20; 16:9-15; 16:25-34; 18:5-11... since the Bible does not enumarate every single event in the life of the Church, we must accept the fact that there were way much more baptism performed than those listed and that there would be a variation in the revelation of the Holy Spirit--the Holy Spirit is not performing for Believers or non-Believers; He is exacting God's Plan and, as the Divine executor, He has full Authority and control over what transpires as demonstration of His presence among the Believers! In example: How many people came to their conversion as Saul? How many were placed as precursors to Christ? It is God who determines what must transpire to keep His Plan functioning within His appointed time! Speaking in tongues, as any other Gift, is part of the Church's past and is part of the Church's continued function... however, there is but one Pentecost, and one demonstration that the Holy Spirit has been given to the Church! (John 14:16; Matthew 16:17-18; Acts 2:17-21; John 17:9, 19-23) "1 Cor 13:8-10? (The reason I say that is because it's possible to interpret "when the perfect comes" as heaven)" I must disagree with you on this point... read 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 in light of 1 John 3:2-3... it is Jesus who must come so that we can inherit the final transition as children of God: perfection: the essense of God! Further, the Kingdom of God is at hand! Jesus elevated His disciples to this understanding (where would we go--John 6:68) and He announced that if these things were happening (miracles, cures, baptism...) it was a demonstration that God's Kingdom was at hand (Matthew 4:11; Luke 21:31; 17:19-22). God Bless! Angel |

434 | Holy Spirit / Tongues for Today? | Acts 2:39 | JCrichton | 151172
Hi, Huron! I think that the distinction of water baptism and baptism in the Holy Spirit is only a matter of later generations of Christians... if we follow closely the early Church we must see that whenever there was one the other soon followed... it was indispensable for Christians to simply do without either! I think the root concern is to identify the reason for Pentecost and the mini/semi Pentecosts that would follow... it wasn't a mandate that Christians would speak in strange tongues! The manifestation of the Holy Spirit in signs such as the rumblings and the tongues of fire and the demonstration of an enhanced ability (speaking in tongues) is simply that... a demonstration; a tool to gather both Believers and non-believers about the Apostles and disciples... Notice that there is a difference between Pentecost's revelations and Paul's admonishions: Peter and the others spoke or seemed to be speaking in the various languages of those present during the actual incident... while Paul is speaking about strange tongues or languages not discernable to the human mind--languages that have their originins and their afinity in God! What I have tried to clarify is that when the Believers are baptizedthe, the Holy Spirit will not always be manifested by the signs of strange languages or multilingual ability of those baptized; yet, Christians are baptized in the Holy Spirit and receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, this includes the ability to speak in tongues--this will not cease till the end of times because the Holy Spirit was given to the Church to teach Her and guide Her to the fullness of truth and God's Gifts are perpetual (they will accomplish God's Will by assisting man's limitations throughout the ends of time)... Recap: Manifestation of the Holy Spirit in a manner similar to Pentecost--not necessary once Christians are aware of Hi presence... The ability of Christians to speak in tongues--it is part of the Holy Spirit's Gifts and He will detemine who, what, where, when, and how often and to what degree Christians are to become cognizant of them and practitioners of them. Again I refer you to Paul's words... his concern was not so much that Christians spoke in strange languages... his concern was that Christians aspired for those Gifts that would serve to edify the Church... We get so caught up in this issue that we miss the whole exercise completely: speaking in tongues is only of benefit to the person who is speaking (unless there is an interpreter and the matter must deal directly with the edification of the Body of Christ, not some personal revelation about a particular individual/s)... God Bless! Angel |

435 | Holy Spirit / Tongues for Today? | Acts 2:39 | JCrichton | 151209
Hi, Mike! I am not suggesting otherwise (water baptism and baptism in the Holy Spirit)... what I am saying is that it was understood that they were part of the initiation into the Body of Christ... the best examples I can offer you are found in Acts 8:14-17 and 10:34-48; on the first passage the people had been preached to and had been baptized; yet they did not receive the Holy Spirit till Peter and others visited them and infused the Holy Spirit on them... the second passage speaks of a totally reversed situation as the Holy Spirit was acting in these Believers but they had not received water baptism... Peter commanded that they be baptized (water) as well as having the Holy Spirit's baptism! Today, we are so engrossed in our individual congregational's views that at times we think that we can omit one part or the other or that we can be at higher spiritual levels than even Jesus who was both baptized in water and anointed by the Holy Spirit! Again, though different events, both water baptism and baptism in the Holy Spirit are part of the make up of Christians... it is, as they say, "the whole enchilada!" God Bless! Angel |

Hi, afro! I understand what you are saying--it's just that I've had many conversations where people pointed out individual Bible passages and claimed them to be their proof (for whatever point they intended to make) while ignoring hundreds of passages that complemented theirs, and indeed sheed greater clarification. But even when I introduced them to other passages they refused to acknowledge them or attempted to reduce their importance or meaning. Thanks for your clarification! God Bless! |

439 | Holy Spirit or holy spirit? What is it? | Acts 4:24 | JCrichton | 140112
Hi, Ray! I think that Jesus said it best when He stated that man speaks from the abundance of the heart! I've known of people who go out into the mountains seeking a personal retreat, seeking to confine the world and open themselves to God... not everyone finds such devotion practical... I've known of people who confess to be atheists or even satanic worshippers... when facing hardships or perceived/impending danger they have asked for a Bible, Bible Study, prayers or a combination of all three; some would say that they will never know God... Again I fall back on Christ's teachings: a) the poor widow's offer being pleasing God rather than many others who were, on the surface, generous givers (Matthew 12:41-44), and b) the repentant publican who humbled himself to God rather than boast about his credentials (Luke 18:10-14)... So if we err by emphasizing God's Authority and Divinity, we err because we seek to serve Him and the Holy Spirit will bring us enlightenment or joy or both! God Bless (I emphasize "Bless" because He does! It is His Will that we come to the fulness of His Grace: Christ Jesus!) Angel |

440 | Holy Spirit or holy spirit? What is it? | Acts 4:24 | JCrichton | 140216
Hi, Ray! I can only tell you that I read through this post with contentment and a broad smile both on my lips and on my heart! Romans 14:17-18 seemed to have been in the back of our minds... serving Christ in the (justice and) joy of the Holy Spirit... that is what pleases God! The opposing references of joy (the Magi and those who receive the Word with joy) are excellent examples of serving God in the joy of the Holy Spirit... the Magi could barely contain themselves as they sought the newborn King... they were responsive to the Holy Spirit that guided them through their familirity with astrological science... they were ignorant of much but still they trusted and followed His star! In contrast, there is that joy of the believers and the world that is based on a direct temporal experience... once the novelty dies down... once the adversities or the revelry kicks in... human intellect and wisdom, being outmatched, surrenders and refuses to continue the journey... left to our own devise, we lose the joy brought to us by the Holy Spirit! The Magi are an excellent example of reliance on God's Wisdom... they had been duped by Herod, but they were still in the "joy" and they obeyed without question, thus helping to protect the Child from the dragon (Revelation 12:13-16)... You are correct, Matthew 13:15 deals with a direct function within God's Salvific Plan... it was necessary that Israel should miss out on that joy of the Holy Spirit so that the rest of the world (those who were not God's people) would be brought onto the fold! (Romans 9:25-26) Yet, since this joy comes to us from God, Israel still has hope and it will be called back into that same fold where the two people would find joy! (Ephesians 2:14-18) The joy being revealed in Matthew 3:16-17, reminds me of the two old folks, the old guard, that were witnesses to the Child: Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:22-38)... their joy was complete as they were granted their most dearest desire: to witness the Coming of the Lord! "the Holy Spirit wishes to bring us enlightenment as well as joy," This is exactly what I understand! Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come to be with us and in us! He is the One given the task to convict man of all Truth! He is the One who is to build and guide the Church (John 14:16-17, 25-26; 15:26-27; 16:7-15)... Jesus wanted us to abound in His knowledge so that His joy would be our joy and so that our joy would be complete (John 15:11): the Holy Spirit is that joy: the knowledge of God! (Romans 15:13; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22) God Bless! Angel |
