1261 | Is the bride of christ the church? | Eph 5:32 | Emmaus | 144481
Sam, The Church is the New Jerusalem. When we become members of the Church, we become citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem. Through our worship, prayers, and works in Christ we participate in the heavenly life. Similarly we refer to "Church" simultaneously as the structure and the people who are in the structure. So it is with the Bride, the Church, the New Jerusalem Phil 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; Emmaus |

1262 | Is the bride of christ the church? | Eph 5:32 | Emmaus | 144584
Tim, I have heard that St Augustine knew a little about Scripture. He wrote a book titled The City Of God, which equated the City of God and the Church. So if the New Jerusalem is the City of God and it is inhabited by the Saints of God and the New Jerusalem is the Bride, I think we can decue that the Church is the Bride. Scripture also says that Bride and the Groom become "one body." Hmmm! The Church is the "body" of Christ. hmmm. Emmaus |

Tim, I did not think your were disagreeing. Metaphor is by definition indirect and implicit rather than direct and explicit. Emmaus |

1264 | Is reverence feasible? Always? | Eph 5:33 | Emmaus | 65850
"When we seek to know the Lord, and listen for His heartbeat, our being will reflect Him more and more and obviously, that will be seen in a life that exemplifies the principles that God has set for us to live by." Mommapbs Having studied the Bible for many years I immediately recognized that not only is this not from the Bible ... there is nothing in the Bible that could be twisted or stretched in any way to even resemble what you wrote. Rabbi Mark "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. " Deut 4:29 " And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." Luke 1:46-55 Next you (Mommapbs) wrote: "Living life by the Law, following Biblical principles will never bring about the abundant life we long for unless we long for the giver of Life as a Bride longs for her husband --the key word is intimacy." "Again this concept can be found no where in the Bible. I mean, you actually say, that following Biblical principles will never bring about the abundant life we long for ... unless..." Rabbi Mark intimacy "O that you would kiss me with the kisses of your mouth! For your love is better than wine, your anointing oils are fragrant, your name is oil poured out; therefore the maidens love you. Draw me after you, let us make haste. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; rightly do they love you." Song of Soloman 1:2-4 "And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband;" Rev 21:2 "The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." And let him who hears say, "Come." And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life without price." Rev 22:17 "One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house, and took his place at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?" "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?" Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." Rabbi Mark, I do not recall placing myself under your teaching authority, nor am I concerned with meeting your standard of what is "adequate scriptural references" on any particular question. Your opinion of what is adequate is a rather subjective standard. Emmaus |

1268 | Why Rabbi? | Eph 5:33 | Emmaus | 66599
Hello Charis, We have not corresponded in quite a while. You have addressed the issues of titles very well and broadly, with the addition of an interesting cultural context. I will post a note on the narrower issue of the title "Father" within the context of my background (and a little word study) since it comes up from time to time in my personal encounters with others. 1269 | Why Rabbi? | Eph 5:33 | Emmaus | 66644
Charis, I was not offended. I enjoyed your post and found your discussion of the cultural implications of your own situation in Japan very interesting. I think you made it clear that your concern was not with any one particular group or title, but with the broader subject. I just thought I would address the topic from my particular prospective, since it is brought up to me on occassion, usually in a polite and sincere manner. Always good to hear from you. Emmaus |

1271 | explain Kenosis | Phil 2:7 | Emmaus | 109502
Mommapbs, "Simplistically, when I am at home, I am a wife and a mother. When I am at school I am a teacher. Do I change who I am because of the roles I "take on?" Does this make sense?" It is important to distinguish between "form" and "substance." In your example, wife and mother are "forms." In substance you are a woman. Jeus in substance is God, who took on the "form" of a servant as opposed to the divine kingly form he word have in heaven, the "form" which he will take when he comes again. Of course I am not a theologian, so any improper formulations or errors are my responsibility alone. Emmaus |

1272 | explain Kenosis | Phil 2:7 | Emmaus | 109538
Ray, I agree. The various translation of one phrase of the Nicene Creed are: "one in being with the Father", "one in substance with the Father", "one in essence with the Father." Emmaus |

1275 | Verification on Charles Taze Russell | Col 2:9 | Emmaus | 82820
The old system was destroyed in 70 AD when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and old temple sacrificial system. That is what Matt 24 is all about and also why we see the New Jerusalem, the Church, decended in Revelation 21 after the old Jerusalem was destroyed by fire. That was the microcosim, the rest until the Second Coming is the working out of the Macrocosim. Revelations says what is revealed will happen "soon" Rev 22:10-12,20 and Rev 1:1-3. In the original Greek, "soon" means "soon." Soon was 70 AD. The generation that was not to pass away before the fulfillment of Matt 23:36 and 24:34 would take the 35-40 tears up to 70 AD from 30-35 AD when Jesus was making His prophecy. Emmaus |

1276 | Jesus being the godhead bodily | Col 2:9 | Emmaus | 127107
The Amplified Bible Col 2:9 For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead)continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature]. Col 2:10 And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead--Father, Son and Holy Spirit--and reach full spiritual stature]. And He is the Head of all rule and authority [of every angelic principality and power]. |

1277 | Under part of the Law? | Col 2:14 | Emmaus | 146196
Mark, Yes and yes, with the following understanding. I think St. Paul is very clear in Romans that we must "be doers of the Law, not hearers only." But at the same time he is very clear that this does not include the ceremonial "works of the Law" of which circumcised is the most prominent and representative of the other ceremonial aspects of the Mosaic Law (Gal 5:4-5). Paul also makes clear that the Gentiles know the moral law without Moses. This is the universal law sometimes called Natural Law. (Romans 2:12-15, 25-29) I do not think it is an accident or mere coincidence that St. Paul opened and closes his letter to the Romans by refering to "the obedience of faith." (Romans 1:5; 6:15-18; 16:26). And yes God chastises and corrects His children.(Hebrews 12:6) Emmaus |

1278 | Sabbath is Saturday or not ?? | Col 2:16 | Emmaus | 146058
Merv, "There is historical that the changing of the worship day is a fulfillment of Daniel 7:25." Here is Daniel 7:7,8, 25 "After this, in the visions of the night I saw the fourth beast, different from all the others, terrifying, horrible, and of extraordinary strength; it had great iron teeth with which it devoured and crushed, and what was left it trampled with its feet. "I was considering the ten horns it had, when suddenly another, a little horn, sprang out of their midst, and three of the previous horns were torn away to make room for it. This horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly. ... "He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. " Here is an alternative explanation: "Alexander's empire was different from all the others in that it was Western rather than Oriental in inspiration. The ten horns represent the kings of the Seleucid dynasty, the only part of the Hellenistic empire that concerned the author. The little horn is Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-163 B.C.), the worst of the Seleucid kings, who usurped the throne." "The reference is to the persecutions of Antiochus IV and his attempt to force the Jews to give up their customs and to adopt Hellenistic ways (1 Maccabees 1:33-34) A year, two years, and a half-year: an indefinite, evil period of time. As seven is the Jewish "perfect" number, half of it signifies great imperfection. Actually, this corresponds fairly accurately to the duration of Antiochus' persecution." 1279 | Is the rapture biblically supported? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Emmaus | 132139
duketunes, It is not 1 Thes 4:17 or Second Coming that is in dispute about the rapture. It is all the extrapolation and interpretation that is disputed among various camps. What one person means by "The rapture" and what another means by it in the broad intrpretaion can be very different. Emmaus |

1280 | satan and his power?!?!?!?!?!?hmmmmmm... | 2 Thessalonians | Emmaus | 96873
DL5, First let me say I admire your testimony and perserverence expressed in your personal history posted recently. On the subject of binding and loosing in Matt 16:198-19 and 18:18: I think it is very clear from the context that these verses refer to binding authority in the governance of the Church by Peter and the other Apostles and they are not in this context referring to the binding of demons. The terms "binding" and "loosing" were already in use among the Rabbis of Jesus' time and can be seen in the Talmud. It referred to the authority to make binding decisions within the religious community. Citing these passages in reference to the resistance or "binding" of demons is, I believe, reading something into these particular passages something that is not there. Emmaus |
