Brenda If Jesus died for our sickness why do Christians still get sick? Why do Christians die from some disease? Oh it might be a quiet death in ones sleep but is still death from sickness. In countries where doctors and hospitals don't exist why is the death rate still very high among the Christians? Jesus died for you healing but it was spiritual healing with a physical healing that comes when we trade our corruptible for incorruptible. Why is the passage in Revelation 21:4 so exciting? Why did many decidedly Christian disciples get sick? Where does it say in the Bible that Christians don't get sick and die? Brenda you have fallen for the biggest golly gee promise an evangelist ever used to get more people to listen to him. It is called Word of Faith Hokey Pokey. Or the health wealth and prosperity gospel. Ask yourself one question why don’t these men that can manifest all this healing go into the hospitals and clinics and heal. Jesus when he was on earth went to the sick, the afflicted, the sinner. He didn’t stay in the church taking offerings. EdB |

Brenda How can you possibly say it wasn't God’s best for him to be without the car. If he was praying, had no unconfessed sin and paying his tithes, aren't we promised God's best? If we don't consider this God's best then what is? A Ford? Nah! How about a Lincoln? Nah! maybe a Rolls? see when you try to tie God’s best to physical realm you can't stop obviously God's best would be as chauffeured driven Bentley. Or possibly a 747. See the nonsense we get into. God's best as Paul tells is whatever state we find ourselves, whether rich or poor, hungry or feed, cold or hot, even sick or well we need to learn to content ourselves in that state trusting God when He says He will make all things work to our Good. CDBJ The word Pisteuo also carries with it a connotation of dependence. Not only do we believe we become dependent on it. We not only have to believe in Jesus, not only do we have to trust in Jesus, we also have to realize our need for salvation and depend on Jesus for that salvation. I think too many believe in Jesus and they may even trust in Jesus but to few really think they need salvation and depend in Jesus only for it. When they read the scripture that says "all have sinned..." they think maybe you, but this ain't talking about me. Or if they do realize their own fallen state many then depend on their new reformed life style as making them acceptable. An added thought for what it is worth EdB |

369 | What do put in the perfect study bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 117735
andrewj Excellent point provided we come up with the right answer. However many times we don't, that is the reason we now have over 3000 denominations, plus cults like Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses and Word of Faith. Before the reformation the church went basically in one direction. While that direction was not always the best it was more or less a unified direction. After the reformation every man went in a direction that seemed best to him. Example: To baptize or not, with sprinkling or immersion, in the name of the Father and Son and Holy spirit of Jesus only, as an infant or at the age of accountability (whatever age that is), or after salvation or preceding death and etc. To really understand the Bible it must be studied systematically, with proper exegesis, maintaining context. Few of us are willing to put that much effort into it. In many cases our Pastors and churches aren’t doing it and that is why study Bibles have become so popular. EdB |

andrewj I agree except where do you think cults and all these denominations come from or some of the junk we see in the church today? It is from people deciding for themselves what the Bible says. Without proper systematic study some one can read a passage or two and go off into some of the most crazy doctrine. If you don't believe it, listen to Christian TV. In one day you will find one man teaching the exact opposite another taught and both will have a whole arsenal of verses to prove their point. Usually both are wrong and the truth lies somewhere between them. In the early church from the first through about the 5 century churchmen, scholars, theologians put together statements of faith, doctrines and creeds to define our faith. Since that time men have been trying to change them. Then during the Reformation which coincided with the “age of enlightenment” man had been deciding for himself what the Bible says and how that applies to his life. Today we see the hodge podge that man has cobbled together. Today we fight over how to baptize, salvation, and just about every aspect of Christianity while a lost and dying world watches shaking their heads saying “and they claim to have the answer!” Unless the Bible study your involved with is doing a intense inductive Bible study I would imagine they would benefit from a good reliable study Bible. Without it your nothing more than a group of people deciding what the Bible passage says and you may or may not get it right. EdB |

372 | spirit/soul of the lost | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 117996
CDBJ I have learned through the years very few people want to see the truth, most want to see what they believe to be the truth. Most cults started with a guy applying human logic to a profound question instead of searching the scripture. After they formulate the answer then they search the scripture to prove their point. Once they have the what they feel is proof text they then caution all followers to beware of infidels that would show them scripture to refute their proof. That does two things it limits what information they have to deal with but it also satisfies my first statement they only have to see what they believe to be true. Thus the circle is complete. EdB |

Henry and Emmy If a parable isn't to be taken literally then we have a problem. In the parable of the sower he threw seeds, do we now need to question the existence of seeds? The seeds fell in rocky places should we question if there really is rocky places? The seeds fell among the thorns perhaps we should really wonder if there is such a things thorns. The seeds were snatched by the birds perhaps birds are a figment of our imaginations planted there by this parable. The seeds fell in good soil. Perhaps we need to question whether things grow. The story in Luke 16:19-31 fit exactly the Jewish perception of Hades. This is found in many pre New Testament books and literature. How they developed this idea we have no idea but the fact it was universally accepted by Jews (with the exception of the Sadducees) makes many believe it was passed down from Moses. In any case knowing this was already in their mind set Jesus by using it either was confirming what they held as truth was true or he was part of the deception to continue to mislead them. Which do you think it was? EdB |

Rowdy While I know this is popular teaching could you provide any verse that shows Jesus was separated from God at any time? EdB |
||||||
376 | Cup Passed? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 118145
Rowdy Yes I think you have fallen into the trap. First there is no place that says Jesus and God were ever separated. Jesus hanging on the cross cried "My God My God why have you forsaken me?" This is quote of Psalm 22:1. I believe it was said for two reasons. First showing his humanity he cried out much as David did when he wrote the verse but even David knew God had not left him. Secondly Jesus being God and having a love for us used this verse to remind all hearers that Psalm 22 was written that prophesied this exactly scene. It was yet one more attempt to show everyone that truly this was the Son of God and was fulfilling yet another prophecy. Now the question remains did God leave him or not? Verse 24 of that same Psalm shows the truth. Psalm 22:24 “ For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard.” God would never leave anyone when they needed God most. When we are deepest in sin is when God extends His hand that much further to pull us out of the muck and mire. As to the other part of your question did Jesus go to prison absolutely. What is that prison? Hades. What imprisons there? Death. What did Jesus conquer? Death. Upon His death and His victory over it Jesus went to Hades which is translated Hell. And preached the Good News (as told in 1 Peter 3:18) to the righteous dead that resided in Abraham’s bosom or paradise side of Hades (you can read about this in Luke 16:19-31). He then lead captivity captive to heaven Eph 4:8. You mentioned the blackness that fell, do you know why? Read Genesis 22 the story of Abraham and Isaac. See the parallels. Abraham was told to sacrifice Isaac three days before he was given a ram to replace Isaac. To the Eastern mindset Isaac was dead to his father all that time although he was there. Isaac carried the wood Jesus carried the cross. Isaac allowed his dad to bind him and lay him upon the altar (mindful Isaac was probably a teenager and Abraham was 100 plus years old) Jesus in obedience to God allowed Himself to nailed to the cross. Abraham and Isaac were alone the servants that accompanied them waited at the bottom of the hill for their return, God made a darkness fall so he and His Son were alone. Abraham said God would provide a Lamb yet a ‘ram’ was provided, The Lamb didn’t come until 2000 years later. Incidentally Mount Moriah is the same mountain range Jerusalem and Calvary are on. God is on the throne and God has a plan His will, will be done EdB |

Rowdy Study that passage some more there is a lot of meat there. Particularly when you include a study of Middle Eastern culture and what I call the Eastern mindset. Notice also what else was carried and how this all fits together with the cross. Just as Abraham became a principal in the first covenant he also was important in prophetically drama of the second. 378 | IM PREACHING ON SUNDAY.................. | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 119228
SAZ As you give your testimony be aware of the number of times you say "I". Let your testimony glorify God not you. To many that give a testimony use I, I over and over. They detail their life of sin, it is almost as if they are bragging about how bad they were. As you think about what your going to say if there is more than one I, as in the sentence "I realized I needed Jesus", then ask yourself who is glorified here. EdB |

379 | IM PREACHING ON SUNDAY.................. | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 119260
Saz The greatest testimony you can give is, "I was a sinner on my way to hell when God in His infinite love and mercy reached out His hand and pulled me out of the much and mire." Then go on and tell the church what it means to you to have your name written in the Lamb's book of life. God's glory is not in your sin or how bad it was but your life now that your living for God. Paul said it very eloquently he said 1 Tim. 1:15 "This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief." Paul then gave glory to God through his life and the testimony of his lips. EdB |

Hank I heard one similar, a man was testifying detailing everything he had done before he was saved and what has taken place since his salvation. When he finished a listener mentioned that his testimony was an advertisement for sin. The man giving the testimony testified that he had money, women, fast cars, had been around the world and met fascinating people before he was saved however what he shared about his life after he got saved made it sound like his life got so boring that attending church, visiting the sick in hospitals and prisons was excitement to him. His testimony was all works on his part he never mentioned the work that God had done in his life. He was transformed from a man of no hope, no joy, walking in fear and desperation. To man that had a reason to live, a purpose in his life, new hope, new joy and he how lived without fear and desperation. When people testify they usually want to talk about their works before and after salvation. What they need to be talking about is the what God had done to His glory and honor. EdB |
