462 | Properly Interpreting the Bible | Bible general Archive 3 | DocTrinsograce | 171562
I'd like to append this to my own post. It was so succinctly written, I thought it was worthy of consideration by everyone. Sometimes brevity has its value. :-) The following was written by Norton Sterrett (1982): 1. Base doctrine on the literal statements of the Bible rather than on the figurative portions. 2. Base doctrine on plain statements rather than on obscure ones. 3. Base doctrine on the didactic (teaching) passages rather than on the historical ones. 4. Base doctrine on all the relevant passages, not on just a few. ---* Do a word study to learn some doctrines. ---* There are doctrines which have no one word in the Bible to describe them. ---* There are passages in which a doctrine is presented but the actual word does not occur. ---* Some doctrines have more than one word to express them. 5. Be sure that each passage is understood through the general principles of interpretation. 6. Be cautious in formulating doctrine by inference. 7. Beware of doctrinal speculation. 8. In forming, holding, and teaching doctrine, emphasize what the Scripture emphasizes. 9. Seek the practical import of the doctrine. |

Dear Hank, In the deeper parts of the South -- Not Arkansas -- I mean the really deep parts of the South! :-) -- they follow something called the "Signs." These Signs are chronological in nature, dictating the specific times when certain activities are best to be performed or avoided. Pick up a free calendar at every Feed and Seed store, and you'll see what I mean. The Farmer's Almanac writes, "It's widely believed by many long-time Almanac followers that when the Moon occupies a particular place in the Zodiac each day at 7:00 a.m. EST, it can play an important role in achieving the best possible results for certain activities." Although until I had found this particular quote, I had not known that these "best days," as they are called, had Astrological origins. In the mountains of North Carolina I have known many people will not do so much as go to a doctor unless the Signs were "favorable." Perhaps this is what was in the mind of Justoleeter whey they asked their question. In Him, Doc |

466 | What does numbers 1-12 represent ? | Bible general Archive 3 | DocTrinsograce | 172174
Dear Prayon, Wow! Sounds very authoritative! Of course, it is one thing to post such things. It is quite another to prove them.. Although numbers obviously have some degree of significance in Scripture, we can wander off into mysticism if we aren't careful. The Alexandrian School of thought interprets Scripture in this fashion, but it is not a sound hermeneutic in any sense of the phrase. Since we are a Study Bible Forum -- Study and Bible being the key words here -- please document your numeric assertions from Word. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Brother Kalos... Good quote. It reminded me of another one that I've posted on the forum before. "This temper of mind is hostile to precise definitions. Indeed nothing makes a man more unpopular in the controversies of the present day than an insistence upon definition of terms... Men discourse very eloquently today upon such subjects as God, religion, Christianity, atonement, redemption, faith; but are greatly incensed when they are asked to tell in simple language what they mean by these terms." --John Gresham Machen Amen to that one! |

"In order to be able to expound the Scriptures, and as an aid to your pulpit studies, you will need to be familiar with the commentators: a glorious army, let me tell you, whose acquaintance will be your delight and profit. Of course, you are not such wiseacres as to think or say that you can expound Scripture without assistance from the works of divines and learned men who have laboured before you in the field of exposition. If you are of that opinion, pray remain so, for you are not worth the trouble of conversion, and like a little coterie who think with you, would resent the attempt as an insult to your infallibility. It seems odd, that certain men who talk so much of what the Holy Spirit reveals to themselves, should think so little of what He has revealed to others." --Charles H. Spurgeon "By despising all that has preceded us, we teach others to despise ourselves." --William Hazlitt "Not to know what has transacted in former times is to continue always a child." --Cicero The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Dear Brother Mark, I know you intended your remark to be humorous... However... If a person regularly uses commentaries they would know that the best commentators cite their sources. They would also know that that the early church compiled a large quantity of commentaries. They might even realize that commentaries pre-date Christianity. In Him, Doc |

Dear Tim, That must be one of those rhetorical questions intended to make a point. I suspect that you know that God can turn stones into the sons of Abraham if He chose to do so. Pastors would, of course, recognize that they are a gift of God for the ministry of grace to their congregation through the preaching and teaching of the Word. Their deep love of the flock, and related desire for their welfare, would focus on their feeding and care. So they'd encourage them to avail themselves of the other gifts of God by consideration of the instruction of the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers who have gone to glory. Furthermore, as a pastor with such a demonstrably high view of Scripture as you have asserted, they would carefully use all the resources at their disposal to prepare good, solid expository sermons! And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. Dear Tim, There is a difference between what one could do and what one ought to do with what God has made available. Since God -- as we are instructed in the Bible -- has given us all those gifts, why would we not want to avail ourselves of them for His glory, for the maturing of the body of Christ? The alternative is that the flock will continue to be no more than children, tossed to and fro, and carried with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men (perhaps even the preacher!) and cunning craftiness whereby they lie in wait to deceive. Hi, Tim... As one of my professors put it, "Expository preaching begins with exegesis and finishes with exposition." Exposition is the exposing of truth, i.e., making the truth visible for what it really is. Exposition brings light to bear on the Word. Skilled expository preaching is partially art and partially science. Exegesis, on the other hand, is a matter of definitive principles used to pull the full linguistic, historical, and contextual truth from a passage of Scripture. (I tried to gather together the principles of sound exegesis in the thread #156916.) "The exegete is like a diver bringing up pearls from the ocean bed; an expositor is like the jeweler who arrays them in orderly fashion and in proper relation to each other." --Dr. Nolan Howington I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. (2 Timothy 4:1-2 ESV) Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, 'It shall be well with you'; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, 'No disaster shall come upon you.'" Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the LORD, who steal my words from one another. (Jeremiah 23:16-17, 30 ESV) In Him, Doc |

Dear Brother Tim, Sorry, I thought the Scripture passages and the explanation were pretty obvious. A preacher can choose to be as wise or as foolish as he'd like to be. The wise expositor of the Word avails himself of every tool available to him. Thus he demonstrates a reverential fear of the Lord to whom he will give account. He also becomes a living example of how his listeners should respond to the preaching of the Word. That's about as simply as I can state it. In Him, Doc "Preaching is the proclamation of the word of God to men by men under assignment from God. It is the ordained means for the transmission of the word of God to a lost world; it serves also as an official means of grace for the building up and strengthening of the church of Christ. "Preaching is truth through personality; it may be largely didactic (to teach), or else to lead to faith (to convict and convince) and to motivate (leading to obedience and godly action). Preaching is truth on fire, radically different from a secular lecture or talk; through it the power of God is revealed unto the salvation of souls. "Through preaching men are fed with godly doctrine that leads to holiness; they are exhorted to seek God and his saving grace through Jesus Christ and His cross; they are rebuked because of error and sin; they are encouraged by the faithfulness of God presented to them in the covenant of grace. :Preaching is essential, a sine qua non for the church; without it the people of God will languish. Where true biblical, systematic and expository preaching is present the church will thrive." --Paul Mizzi |

Dear Tim, :-) I quite understand. I will help you though. I will answer an emphatic "No." So you'll get all excited and say, "I got him pinned down... I disagree!" Then let me suggest that without at least life, some minimal amount of intelligence, a common language with your congregation, salvation, the illumination of the Holy Spirit, study and preparation... without each of these things, your hypothetical "someone" will need "something else in addition to Scripture in order to be able to properly preach Scripture." These are only a few of the things that Scripture itself states are required. Even some of them can be broken down into further components. Of course, if you just have a couple of these things, I suppose you could preach someone else's sermon who has done all the real work for you. But that puts you into a logical dilemma, since that is the very thing that you've been trying to argue as superfluous. The need to reduce everything to simple answers is a strong psychological one. It gives us the illusion we have things under our thumbs. Of course, as a pastor of the Word of God you ought to know that you need precisely what He has given you. Nothing more and nothing less. Dear Tim, You wrote, "Insults aside, I simply wanted to make sure that I was clear..." Its okay. :-) I actually hadn't noticed that you had offered me an insult. It wouldn't have troubled me at any rate. "To be right with God has often meant to be in trouble with men." --A. W. Tozer You wrote, "It would be interesting to explore this topic further, but given how the tone is rapidly changing, I will allow your 'no' to simply stand as it is my friend." I thought you might. I kept citing Scripture and only getting quibbling... so I'm fine by your decision too. Thanks for all the questions, buddy! ;-) In Him, Doc |

Dear Brother ebrain, That passage in 1 Corinthians was the only didactic one that came to mind. I had a pastor who believed that it was suggesting some kind of temporary body for use by those in the "interim state" (between death and the resurrection). For me personally, though, I've never felt the Bible said enough about it all to be conclusive, though. In Him, Doc |

480 | ...the LORD blessed the sabbath ..holy" | Bible general Archive 3 | DocTrinsograce | 172944
Dear mbaska, Your declaration regarding the doctrine of the Christian Sabbath left only three possible conclusions: You were either Sabbatarian, Jewish, or Moslem. Moslem wasn't likely, since you made reference to the Mosaic Law. If you were Jewish the last thing that you'd object to would be the topics of Christian orthopraxy. Furthermore, we frequently have Seventh Day Adventists jump onto the forum with mono-thematic posts regarding this very topic. Again, you are encouraged to use the "Search" feature. By the way, the term Sabbatarian is not a derogatory one. It simply means one who observes Saturday as the Sabbath. Consequently, I was not being rude, but simply acknowledging your doctrinal predisposition. Your "pure lies" assertion was, however, extremely divisive. That is a practice that is not only eschewed by the "Terms of Use," but will also be detrimental to your ability to persuade anyone of the merits of your position. In Him, Doc |
