Searcher, No one has shared any "rules" with me. I offered him to go to counciling, not to me. But I can relate. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I was just under the impression that Christians don't turn their back on someone in need. (well, sorry you're hungry, go eat that rock over there!). I'm not directing that your way at all, so please don't think I am. It just really concerns me when we have to turn our backs on someone because of some rules. I am NOT a counselor by any stretch of the imagination (which is why I encouraged him to seek counseling), but could you imagine what he might have thought of Christians if he got such cold responses (just go away, we can't talk to you)? 4 | WHAT DOES 2PETER1:4 MEAN AND IS THERE A | Gen 1:26 | 1-2steve | 148394
FUTURES' How fitting a mame concidering the reference to 2 Pet.1:4.:) I'm just simply gonna quote my commentary on this one. "Through these" refers to God's "glory and goodness" or more generally to His salvation mediated through the Incarnation. So when Christ came at His 1st advent, God made certain promises (very great and precious) of the Messianic Age (3:9, 13) to be brought in when Christ returned. These promises enable Christians to "participate in the divine nature". How does this participation come about? In at least 2 ways: 1) The promises themselves have a purifying effect on a believers life (1 John 3:3). 2)Conversion entails a definite break with "the corruption...caused by evil desires". In coming to know God through Christ, believers escape the corruption of sin; and Christ renews and restores the image of God in them. (Expositor's Bible Commentary). Do you see why I said that your name was so fitting?:) In Christ, steve |

Amen. You just nailed it right on the head. Acts 17:11!:) I hope the day never comes when I think that someone can't teach me. Just dig my grave at that point. Because once I'm unteachable, I believe God will put me right on the shelf. I so agree with you brother! I love it too! In Christ, steve |

Hi, Phyllis and/or Doc, I went to Matt.26:39 and copied just about a paragraph of what John Gill's commentary says. It's interesting that he uses both wrath and fury inclusive in this cup. Here's what he stated: "If it be possible, let this cup pass from me; meaning not only the hour, as it is called in Mark, the present season and time of distress, and horror; but all his future sufferings and death, which were at hand; together with the bearing the sins of his people, the enduring the curse of the law, and the wrath of God, all which were ingredients in, and made up this dreadful bitter cup, this cup of fury". But, (and I may be wrong) the cup represents the coming death that He knew was coming. The Expositors Bible Commentary states that the word "cup" (GK 4539) is regularly used as a metaphor of punishment and judgement (and they used all 5 references you gave.),and that Jesus prayed that God's wrath would be removed. But of course we all know the end result. He died. So He drank the cup of wrath that we deserve, so that we won't have to face eternal judgement. But like I said, I may be wrong. Acts 17:11. I don't know if this helps or created confusion, but it is a good question and discussion. Thanks for letting me partake in it! In Christ, steve |

11 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | 1-2steve | 148192
If we have to speak in tongues as evidence of our salvation, then you tell me, where does faith come in? If I recall right the bible doesn't say that Abraham spoke in tongues and it was counted to him as righteousness. No...He BELIEVED (faith). Besides that, speaking in tongues Today is just a bunch of thrown together syllables that make no sense. Find that in the bible. Every single verse that has the word glossa (tongue) except 2 (both are in Isaiah), the word is used of a HUMAN language. Not some cosmic mumbo jumbo. I take offence to this, because these people will exhalt themselves and look down on people who don't "speak in tongues" and, I and you are just as saved as they are. We were saved by faith through grace, not tongues. My evidence is my personal relationship with Jesus when I pray, read His word, and live life focused on Him. Tongues have only one purpose today and that was spelled out in 1 Cor. 14:4 a. This is a negative statement, not positive. Also remember that Paul wrote this letter because the Corinthian church was a carnal church. Just read some of the things they did. I'm sorry, but I can't sit idley by and let someone tell you a bunch of lies. Those 10 reasons seriously err from the Scriptures. May God's truth prevail. Sincerly, steve |

12 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | 1-2steve | 148207
First of all, I must apologize. I did not recognize the difference in the two. Even though I know that there is a difference, many that believe in speaking in tongues will declare this as evidence for their salvation (but these will also say that you can lose your salvation). So allow me to defend my position. 1. Starting in 1 Cor. 13. Verses 1-3 are hypothetical statements. There is no evidence of a "heavenly language". Everywhere in the entire bible that you see angels communicating, they are communicating in a language that the person understands.Isa. 6; Luke 1:26-38; Rev.5:11-14; etc... and anywhere that you see the angel of the Lord appear in Scripture. (And to add to verses 2 and 3, just ask yourself if Paul really could know "all" mysteries and have "all" knowledge. The answer is a resounding no. He was saying that even if he could do all these things, without love, it's vanity. And if he could, I'd sure like to see him explain the Trinity to me). 2. 13:10- first, tongues weren't just a bunch of put together syllables, it was literal languages (and "various" languages, not just a single language). In Acts 2:7-11, there are roughly 20 different dialects being spoken here. The language was an understandable language with the end result that about 3000 souls were saved because they "understood" what the disciples were saying, and because of speaking in their tongue, it gave Peter an oppritunity to present the gospel. This is what tongues are truly meant for. And secondly, there is supposed to be an interpreter. Now how many tongue speakers do you see today that have someone interpret what they say? They can't. How can you translate a bunch of jibberish? Also, if there is an interpreter present and he/she interprets what the one speaking in tongues is saying, the they should be able to translate it onto paper and interpret it into English. Right? 3.Paul declares it will be done away with when "that which is perfect comes". But what on earth does v. 11 have to do with it? He was saying that these sign gifts were for the baby Christians at that time. And when he matured they were no longer necessary. And by the time a.d. 100 came around, the N.T. was in circulation in the churches. There was no need for tongues (if you keep in context that tongues were for unbelievers as 14:22 clearly states) because the N.T. was complete and the gospel of Jesus Christ could be preached in the church(es). So what would the need for tongues be? What can one say that the bible doesn't? 4. Speaking in tongues places experience in front of the bible. The bible is clear in this matter. O.K., onto ch.14. Later on though, ya'll got me tired and my wife says I've been on the computer too long. Please don't take what I'm saying the wrong way, but as I've been tought, I was given 6 rules. And they are: 1,2,3) Context, context context. 4,5,6) Read, read read. In Christ steve |

EdB, I will agree that it is very possible that God will allow a situation like that to happen. The example you use is a tongue used for the purpose of winning a lost soul to Christ. This is biblical (and it doesn't happen daily either, just unique situations). And I have stated earlier that Wycliffe has gone into many different places, and learned whatever type of language the tribe or whatever was using and helped them put together a language so they could "translate" their language onto paper. Would you call this speaking in tongues? At least here, these people use their minds, where was is taught about tongues today is "just say the syllables and don't think about the sounds" as if God utterly by-passes the mind. And there is not one shred of evidence that would validate a "heavenly language". As I already said, the verse carries the "even though" idea. He was saying that even if he could speak in tongues of men (plural) and tongues of angels (or a heavenly language) (also plural) it's all a clanging gong w/out love. Love is the main point here, not tongues. I'll hit ch. 14 later but I hope this will be something to really think on. In Christ, steve |

Tim, I believe you are right about the different commentaries. They will vary. But you already know that when we study the Scriptures we "draw out"(exegesis) what we can to come to a conclusion, not read into (eisegesis). Then, we can go back and check our findings against the better commentaries. If that proves inconclusive, we still have the history of the church to look back on. Because whatever we come up with, if we don't see agreement in other comm. and church history, we could very well be wrong. And this is where humility comes in. We need to go back starting with the early church fathers and all the way up to now to see if what we believe lines up with most of all of church history. And my standing does line up with the major majority of church history. That is why I am so adimant about where I stand. Allow me to show you my stage of truth: 1) The bible 2) Reason 3)Tradition 4)Experience 5)Emotions The first one is the objective truth. Everything else is subject to interpretation. Notice that emotions or experience is not 1st , 2nd or third. This is the way I and many other Christians should view truth. Not on some emotional high.:) I would challenge anyone who thinks they can speak in tongues to pray in the "origional" language that God gave them for 1 month and see for themselves if their relationship is stronger or weaker. I think you'll find that the emotional experience you long for is as addictive as cocaine. You'll sweat bullets and probably fail a couple of times. It's a tough habit to break.:( Now, is the position I hold wrong? If your stage is different, what does your stage look like?:) Thanks for keeping me sharp!:) Prov.27:17 In Christ, steve P.S. I actually did get some good rest after racking my brain til 2:00a. And thanks for your hospitality!:) |

Tim, I just have one question since I've backed my argument with a number of Scriptures. If you spoke in public with an interpreter present, what could you have said that's not already in the bible?:) In Christ, Steve |

16 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | 1-2steve | 148282
Dear Morant61, The answer to your question is found in 1 Peter 4:11. The NIV states: If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the "very words of God". And if a pastor preaches something that is not biblical, I would call into question his authenticity as a pastor. Jesus, Peter, Paul and Jude all speak of the perverbial wolf in sheeps clothing. And they are out there today. So we need to be careful what we believe.:) That's my view though. Also Heb. 4:12 states that the word of God is "living" and "active"...not tongues. So I do have Scripture that backs me up. I also believe that God could have revealed that same revelation to you without tongues. Because the fact of the matter is that you were sensitive to someone else's needs.:) :). I praise the Lord for people like that!!! In Christ, Steve |

17 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | 1-2steve | 148309
Tim, Hey! What I was saying is that it's the word of God to be preached. Back 2000 yrs. ago, there was no N.T. so tongues were necessary as well as prophesy and knowledge. But the canon of Scripture is complete (including prophesy), so the need to speak in tongues today is unprofitable (I'm sure you'll disagree) because anything anyone says as far as teaching, instruction in righteousness, correction and reproof (2 Tim.3:16) is already found in the bible. So what need is there for tongues? Or prophesy, or knowledge? We have the inspired word of God to lean on and not some revelation from someone who could've easily been used by the devil to lead us astray. I'm open but very cautious. And my statement about Heb. 4:12 is simply the fact that if there are any words that someone needs to speak (as far as living the Christian life is concerned), then it should line up with God's word and not someone who spoke in tongues, and if tongues were so important, then it should have read that tongues are sharper than any two-edged sword. That was my point. But Scripture doesn't say that a message in tongues must be something that is "not" found in the bible. On the contrary, The word spoken in a tongue must line up. If not, it would not edify. But again the N.T. was not around back then, so the tongues back then would would have to line up with the teachings of Christ during His earthly ministry. I hope this helps? I'm not sure that I answered your question correctly. If so, could you restate the question? Thanks!!! In Christ, Steve |

Searcher56, I went and checked out your post #116386 and 115095 and it seemed pretty sound!:) Though I still am not sure about knowledge or prophesy. But at this point, prophesy is in the N.T., and knowledge is there as well. So I have to believe that there is also no need for these sign gifts today. In Christ, steve |

Kalos, I'm glad that you pointed out to Doc that you were speaking in "hypothetical" terms, using the word "IF". Isn't that how Paul started 1Cor. 13:1,2 and 3. So was Paul also speaking in "hypothetical " terms here too?:) But check the greek word "ean" out for yourself. Don't take my word for it.:) I'm just stating the facts my brother.:) In Christ, steve |

20 | Where Does It Say That In Acts? | Acts 2:4 | 1-2steve | 148413
Kalos, The "here" that I was refering to is 1 Cor. 13:1,2,3.:) In Christ, steve p.s. I would like to ask (since it's too late to take my earlier note away) to just forget about this, seeing that we're gonna be at odds. The truth of the matter is that I've been in bible studies, prayer groups and praying with Christians at the Christian Film Festival. And in all of those, in the end we all would start to worship God. And darn if someone wouldn't start speaking in tongues. I couldn't focus on God. I felt very uncomfortable. It was a major disruption. It surely "never" edified me. And I decided to search out the truth for myself. In the last 2.5 years, I struggled with this issue (needless to say, some woman calling herself a prophetess told me that it wouldn't be long before I was hanging form the rafters too!), this one is the one that pushed that button. I have prayed, searched the Scriptures, prayed, searched commentaries (most of which were inconclusive), prayed more and read a few books. And I drew my conclusion based on the evidence placed before me. And other Scriptures that we would disagree on. So my point to this is that we're never gonna get any further. Just a bunch of hot debate. So I'm waving the white flag. I will believe what I believe, and so you will to. But there are far better things to talk about. About 1,800 pages of the bible perhaps? Let's do as the writer of Hebrews said "Therefore leaving the elementary doctrines of Christ, let us press on to maturity. |
