1 | Men having long hair a disgrace? | 1 Cor 11:7 | McBoy222 | 208659 | ||
We should remember that Paul does not make this an issue of disagreement, for he does not see it as a command from God but rather a thing of mens traditions. For he concludes the argument with these words. "But if any man be contentius, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God." This is Pauls final statement on this issue. But to be fully understood it should be studdied in the entire context. 1 Cor 11:1-16. Paul begins by speaking of how the spiritual works over the physical. Then he carries it into the natural and how God has used nature to give this as an example of the covering. But he concludes that having long hair is not a mandated thing, but a issue of cultural preferance. (if any man be contentious we have no such custom: Custom refers to cultural views) The important part of his discussion is the issue of Gods devine order. and of the role of spiritual covering in prayer. |

The custom in context is men having long hair. That’s the beauty of Paul’s last statement, we have no such custom if some one seems to be contentious about it. When I gave my life to the Lord I had hair that went half way down my back. God had no issue with my hair then, nor does he now. But to meet school requirements I had to cut it. I see nothing wrong with a man having long hair, it is not either moral nor immoral. It is neither ethical nor unethical. How a group of people respond to some one having long hair is 100 percent trained in their culture. I had friends who taught their Kids not use any words that were slang, because they told them that every word originated from another form of vulgarity. This is true, but most vulgarity originated from common words. Thus the first Latin translation the Latin Vulgate (or common language) If you are educated in literature and language then you understand . In America it is not always seen as a bad thing to have long hair, what I have found is that it is mostly unaccepted in many religious churches, where Love and Truth are blurred with tradition and human thinking. (I know that religion in and of it’s self is not bad, but when human tradition gets involved in religion you end up with dead churches that forget God and his commandment (Love one another as I have love you, for by the love you have one for another will the world know that you are mine). I think it is best for men to occupier their hearts and minds with how they are walking before the Lord, so that they can be an example through life style no just words. As a Christian I can say that I do believe that head ship is to be the mans, but as a man I also know that headship can not be taken by force. It must be given to him by the woman. So how can a man gain this? It is about life style and example. It has nothing to do with the length of ones hair. I am not wanting to seem argumentative, just realistic. Gods is more concerned with men’s souls then men’s hair. Just as he is more concerned with obedience over sacrifice. We should not make the small things so large, when there are much more pressing needs that the church should be focused on. Such as why the American church is struggling over issues of morality and ethics such as homosexuality and it’s acceptance in many Christian churches, sexual promiscuity and it’s rampant-ness in the youth of our churches, or the divorce rate that is larger in the church then in the world. The fact that Americas church is in negative growth. Such are issues worth discussing. Such issues deal with the souls of men. For the Kingdom of God is not about hair length or cultural yays or nays, but it is about righteousness, truth and peace. It is about hope in Christ and his imminent return. |
