5841 | Human Power? | John 15:5 | DocTrinsograce | 129173
What scriptural evidence is there that Ananias and Sapphira were saved? Even if they were, why would this invalidate eternal security? God can take our lives at any time He chooses (Matthew 10:28) and we are told that a saint's death is a precious thing to the Lord (Psalm 116:15). You'll have to find a better example than Acts 5! (Actually, I'm wondering why you haven't mentioned the two passages that Eternal Security proponents have the most difficulty with. All these other ones are easy!) You could also make a stronger argument by dealing with the verses that have already been presented in support of Eternal Security. |

You see this all over the place in Abraham's life. You see it clearly in Jacob's life. You even see hits of it it in Joseph's life. Moses and Aaron reek with it. Even Joshua shows this pattern. You mentioned Saul, what about David? Solomon as evidenced in Ecclesiastes. Jeremiah struggles with this. Jonah, Amos, Habbakuk further come to mind. Remembering that you feel the OT to be of no value to the modern believer, lets look at the NT for the pattern of God restoring His relationship with His chosen: John the Baptist, Peter (on several occassions), Thomas, most of the other disciples, Mark, the church of the Corinthians, the church of the Galatians, the readers of James' epistle, the readers of Peter's epistles, etc. etc. Wow, Country Girl, if a person misses this, they pretty much miss the entire message of the Bible! You sure you really need Bible references? It might be easier to give references where it isn't happening! God seeks out His own, actively restores them to Himself, and provides grace to enable them to persevere up through the day of glorification. |

5843 | Does Islam fit here? | 2 John 1:7 | DocTrinsograce | 129153
In my church you would be hard pressed to find someone who would believe what the world says about the world. The lost people in the world can swap one set of theologies for another and it matters not one bit: they still are lost. Momma, are you afraid that this will make it harder for God to save them? The world will rage against us and will seek to suppress the truth, and they will do this via all kinds of avenues. Are you afraid that they will succeed in silencing the message of the Gospel? There are more pressing problems in the churches of America than what is going on in the darkness: Seeker-friendly movements that waters down the truth to make it less offensive to the world. It further seeks to define the church in terms of demographics and marketing. Pluralism that sees all paths leading to God, making the cross of none effect. This viewpoint offers solace to the lost by assuring them of their salvation. Subjectivism that sees truth as a matter of experience, even to the point of denying logic. It even goes to so far as to say that words only have meaning to the hearer, thereby eliminating even the necessity to understand the intent of the speaker. Egoism that teaches us to "have good self esteem" instead of doing as the Bible directs "let each esteem other better than themselves." Popular books teach people to focus on themselves in a "purpose driven life" instead of focusing on God and His eternal purpose. Ecumenism that teaches the worship of unity even at the cost of truth. That would put us back under the authority of priests and popes, with no apology or consideration of the hundreds of thousands who were killed and tortured for trying to put Bibles in the hands of common people. False gospels that make man's decision part of salvation, replacing God with man as sovereign, and denying the complete work of Christ on the cross. The list goes on and on. Momma, I don't mean that we shouldn't have compassion on Muhamadans. I don't mean that we should ignore them. I just see that the inside of the church is in shambles. If we don't correct these things, God will not use us to bring the Gospel to others. These issues should be dealt with from the pulpit... these issues of the blackness of sin in our own hearts. A. W. Tozer's words should haunt us all, "How can we expect such grace to save us from the flames of hell, if it lacks the power to change our lives?" |

5844 | Impatience with the World | Jon 4:11 | DocTrinsograce | 129138
How often have we thought about the world and prayed, "God why don't you just deal with them?" When we lose patience like that, we are committing the sin of Jonah. In essence, we are asking the Lord to stop short His long-suffering and bring judgment. But, what would have happened had the Lord done that against us, before we were saved? Do we really want God to show less mercy to others than He has to us? I am grateful to the Lord that He has taught me this from this tiny portion of the Word. My conscience is pricked by this often. Lord, thank you for showing that in my heart I am no different from Jonah or the Sons of Thunder. Forgive me, and help me to be more like You in thought and deed.

That's sad! I'd have told you first and foremost to pray for him! The rest, "tell the truth in love" goes without saying! You are a believer, then share the character of your Master... speak truth in love always. Walk close to Him, and your prayers will avail much!
5846 | Does Islam fit here? | 2 John 1:7 | DocTrinsograce | 129129
The church has the responsibility to declare the Gospel. The scripture do not command the people of God to go out and condemn the false theories, morals, ideas, beliefs, etc. of the lost. (If you clean up a corpse, you only get a clean corpse.) We are to correct these things in the church. Besides, declaring the truth is easier... there are an infinite number of ways to be wrong! Remember, too, that we were lost once too. What if God had been less merciful to us? Perhaps God will spare some of them. Paul encourages us (Titus 3:2-7) "To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." |

Good answer, Chris! I concur. You don't say much, do you? I see you have been on the forum since 2002, with only 4 posts! Reminds me of a story I once heard. A reporter went up to President Calvin Coolidge at a party in the Whitehouse. She said, "I bet my collegue that I could get you to say more than two words this evening." The president smiled and said, "You loose." :-) |

5848 | Why are there no women angels | Bible general Archive 2 | DocTrinsograce | 129097
Hi, Ed... good answer! One must note, however, that angels are always spoken of in the masculine. I've been partial to the idea that angels are gender neutral, gender seeming to be a special creation of God in the earth. However, like you said, we aren't explicitly told. By the way, also contrary to popular belief, there are no instances of angels singing in the scripture? :-) PS I've enjoyed your posts from today, brother Ed. |

The "ordo solutis" has to do with the order in which the components of salvation are accomplished. I think Perkins overdid it a bit, but he sure spent a lot of time thinking about it. You can see his complete chart at: http://members.aol.com/Graceordained/predchrt.html |

"Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God." Mark 10:26-27 "If any man doth ascribe of salvation, even the very least, to the free will of man, he knoweth nothing of grace, and he hath not learnt Jesus Christ aright." --Martin Luther "The will is not destroyed but rather repaired by grace." --John Calvin "God’s predetermination of second causes is that effectual working of his, according to his eternal purpose, whereby though some agents, as the wills of men, are causes most free and indefinite, or unlimited lords of their own actions, in respect of their internal principle of operation (that is, their own nature), [they] are yet all, in respect of his decree, and by his powerful working, determined to this or that effect in particular; not that they are compelled to do this, or hindered from doing that, but are inclined and disposed to do this or that, according to their proper manner of working, that is, most freely" --John Owen "Man is nothing: he hath a free will to go to hell, but none to go to heaven, till God worketh in him to will and to do his good pleasure" --George Whitefield "Free will carried many a soul to hell, but never a soul to heaven." --Charles H. Spurgeon "No wonder Martin Luther wrote a book entitled The Bondage of the Will which he considered one of his most important treatises. The will is in the chains of an evil human nature. You who extol the free will as a great force are clinging to a root of pride. Man, as fallen in sin, is utterly helpless and hopeless. The will of man offers no hope. It was the will choosing the forbidden fruit that brought us into misery. The powerful grace of God alone offers deliverance. Cast yourself upon God’s mercy for salvation. Ask for the Spirit of Grace that He may create a new spirit within you." --Walter Chantry "If the final decision for the salvation of fallen sinners were left in the hands of fallen sinners, we would despair all hope that anyone would be saved." --R. C. Sproul |

Good answers! Have you ever noticed the question God asks Adam and Eve after they sinned? He said, "Where are you?" and "What have you done?" He asked Cain, "Where is your brother?" God, of course, knew the answers to these questions. So isn't it likely that He wanted them to acknowledge their guilt and confess their sin? Interesting that they didn't do it. But isn't that the pattern of so many? Sorry... couldn't help but pursue that rabbit trail a bit. |

5853 | Human Power? | John 15:5 | DocTrinsograce | 128993
Hi, Mark. Thank you for the comments. At Christ's second coming He will be coming as Judge. He came as Savior at His first coming. We are told to be sober and watchful for that day. Christ Himself said, (Luke 21:34-36) "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. (Note that these warnings are the exact kind of snares into which the Ladoceans fell.) Furthermore, we are told that as an ultimate reward we will sit with Him and sup with Him. Revelation 19:9a "Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb." So Christ's offer to sup and fellowship with the beiever at His coming is not out of place. James, exhorting the saints, makes reference to Christ's return in the same manner... and uses the same idiom of the door (as has been noted in a former post). So, Mark, it remains harmonious with the rest of scripture. Now, regarding the Laodiceans, let us remember what Paul said about the Corinthians. The Corinthian church had really gotten itself into a real mess... I'd think even more of a mess than Laodiceans. Nevertheless, Paul still calls them saints. 1 Cor 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. However, in that same passage, he warns them that their works will be tested. 1 Cor 3:13-15 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Doesn't this language sound familiar? To the Ladoiceans Christ says, "I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire." I appreciate your comments. They were well worth a response. However, the preponderance of scriptural evidence does not support your hermeneutic. |

Hi, 1949! Welcome to the forum! God does have a specific will for your life: obey Him as King. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. (15) See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. (16) Rejoice evermore. (17) Pray without ceasing. (18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (19) Quench not the Spirit. (20) Despise not prophesyings. (21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (22) Abstain from all appearance of evil. (23) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (24) Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. |

5856 | Human Power? | John 15:5 | DocTrinsograce | 128982
Rev 2:7a He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches The passage that you quoted from is part of the Holy Spirit's message to the seven churches mentioned. (Of course these messages are intended to be studied to our benefit as well.) Who were these Churches? The word church, first came into use by Christ Himself. It refers to a collection of believers. Thus, as we are told seven times in Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29, 3:6, 13, and 22, these messages are to believers. Rev 3:20 gives the metaphor of Christ knocking at the door. This metaphor has been the subject of paintings and illustrations. Consequently, it has also been used as an evangelical metaphor, just as you have done. Since this message was to saved people, it couldn't possibly be evangelical in nature. Furthermore, we have even more conclusive evidence that it is not evangelical. Take a look at James 5:8-9 which states, "You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door." Christ is the Judge. In James we see this is not so much a metaphor as an idiom. So it isn't about evangelism at all. Instead, its about impending judgment. Although appeals to other authorities are much less conclusive than the evidences above, I think you should know that the view that 3:20 is evangelical originates with John Wesley and was furthered by Charles G. Finney. On the other hand, most other orthodox scholars use these passages to encourage believers to renewed diligence in their walk with Christ. Country Girl, you have stated elsewhere that you want scripture, not men's opinion, to guide your understanding. Here is clear scriptural evidence. If you choose to retain your view on decisional regeneration, this verse, at least, should not be used as support for that position. Regarding OSAS I really liked Hank's post. In my opinion he explained things very lucidly. I am complete agreement with his post. Sorry if this sounds too terse... I get rather excited about taking scripture in context and using scripture to clarify scripture. My hearts desire is for all believers to rightly divide the word. |

5858 | Human Power? | John 15:5 | DocTrinsograce | 128942
Young lady, please do not put words into my mouth... er... posts. "Barge in and thrust Himself?" Not only have you failed to properly represent my position, you used words specifically chosen to appeal to emotion. Furthermore, you didn't deal with the verses I gave in support. The Lord has given us minds and His Spirit to help us rightly divide His word. I never have, never will, and never could say that God forces Himself on anyone. God holds man responsible for his choices. I am sure you would agree with that, but you'll be puzzling over why I would agree with that. I will try to explain. Please refer to the account of God's wrath in Rev 6:15-17 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? We agree that the people in this passage are not believers. Notice that there is not one word of regret or repentance as they face God's judgment. In fact, if you look anywhere else in scripture for places where the lost are confronted with Divine retribution, there is only sorrow at what they are suffering. Even at the most dire time in their existence, they do not call out for forgiveness! (See Luke 16:24, 13:26; Mat 7:22, 22:12, 25:25, 44; Rev 16:9, 18:10, 19; etc.) Why do the lost refuse to submit the Lord ? It stems from the fact that they have no desire to do so. Every man makes choices based on what he deems to be good for himself at any time. The will is the mind making choices. The mind combines knowledge, emotion, experience, and inclination as it generates choices. However, no one ever chooses anything that they deem is bad for them. As Christ pointed out, our first and deepest love is for ourselves. We make choices in the direction of what we see as "good," and away from choices we see as "bad." Note that I do not mean to use the words good and bad in their moral sense, but from our own minds alone. So, no one can force you to do something you don't want to do. You will say to me, "What about at the point of a gun?" I still say the same thing: No one can force you to do something you don't want to do. In the case of the gun-pointing example, your choice to comply with the directions of the person wielding the weapon is influenced by your desire to stay alive and avoid pain. Now, a crazy person might jump out into traffic, etc. But even in that case, they are choosing what they deem to be best at the moment. Now someone will bring up suicide. Suicide is, in my estimation, the supreme act of self love. It always comes out of feelings that a person is in intolerable circumstances that, in their estimation, they do not deserve. Most people think that a suicide victim hates themselves. But think about it. I say, "My wife has left me, my car broke down, my dog ran away, I'm going to shoot myself." What I'd be saying is that I love myself too much to tolerate this situation. You see, if I hated myself, I'd say, "My wife has left me, my car broke down, my dog ran away, I can't wait for the next bad thing to happen!" Okay, so how does all this relate to the offer of salvation? In the Fall, we lost the ability to choose what was good from God's point of view. Adam and Eve imputed evil or deceit to God's heart. They chose to take matters in their own hands, believing the superiority of their own choices over God's. From then on they made their own laws instead of finding happiness in keeping God's law. The record shows that this tendency persists with us through this very day. Left to our own devices, we will not choose God's way, but our own way. We are spiritually dead. Therefore, God must restore that ability -- that spiritual deadness -- to enable a person to choose the things of God. This is why that discussion on the "ordo solutis" was so important. Only when God supernaturally intervenes through the act of regeneration are we able to respond to Him in obedience. The unregenerate man lacks the ability. The regenerate man has that ability and will always choose the only sane thing, which is to obey God in obedience to the gospel. This is the doctrine of election you see all over the scriptures. God chooses His own and makes their calling effectual through regeneration. There is nothing of "barging in" or "thrusting Himself" in any of this. Consequently, God's holiness remains intact, His awesome mercy is demonstrated, and His justice is satisfied. In a subsequent post to this one I will properly exegete our Lord's message to the Laodicean saints. |

The mistake here is taking that passage (Rev 3:20) and treating it as prescriptive. It is not prescriptive. It is descriptive. (People do the same thing with John 3:16.) What happens when someone hears Christ's voice and opens the door? He, Christ, comes in -- guaranteed. Who hears His voice? Sheep do (John 10:26-27 see below). Who obey (i.e., open the door)? Only His sheep. John 10:26-27 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. |
