542 | By the Grace of God | 1 Cor 15:10 | DocTrinsograce | 242247
"I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be and by the grace of God I am what I am." --John Newton |

543 | Undoubtable Evidence of a Church | Rev 2:11 | DocTrinsograce | 242245
"Wherever we see the Word of God purely preached and heard, and the sacraments (baptism and Lord's Supper) administered according to God's institution, there, it is not to be doubted, a church of God exists." --John Calvin |

544 | Abundant Grace | Acts 4:33 | DocTrinsograce | 242244
"The grace of God is as inexhaustible as it is free. We can go continually to our Savior and ask for grace and receive it, and still it is not exhausted by that. As little as the ocean decreases if a little bird drinks from it every day, just as little does the grace of God decrease when we take from its fullness again and again as much as we need." --Joseph August Gottlieb Spangenberg |

545 | In Christ ... in His Body | John 17:25 | DocTrinsograce | 242242
"Union with Christ means communion with His body. There is no Christianity that is free of the visible, living, local church in a known area." --Michael Horton |

546 | To trust in other means... | John 9:15 | DocTrinsograce | 242237
"There is as great an aptness to trust in other means and let out our hearts to them. An arm of flesh signifies a great deal, when the power of an almighty Spirit is reckoned as nothing. And persons are apt to be very contriving, and prone to forecast, how such and such external forms would do our business and make the church and the christian interest hugely prosperous. As great an extravagancy as if we would suppose that fine sights would fill a hungry stomach, or that gay clothes would cure an ulcerous body. It is a very vain thing to think that anything that is merely external can reach this end, or do this business. For it cannot be done by any other way, by any might or power, but by the Spirit of the living God." --John Howe (1630-1705) |

548 | Holy Spirit Gifted to All Christendom | Acts 2:32 | DocTrinsograce | 242232
Today is Shavu'ot (Pentecost), a day of commemoration of God's providence. Let us praise our Lord for the Living Word, atonement, regeneration and the Spirit's enlightenment by which we receive the Word. "Good men and wymmen, this day is called Wytsonday because the Holy Ghost brought wytte and wysdom into Cristis disciples, and so by her preaching after in to all cristendom, and fylled them full of ghostly wytte." --Wynken de Worde (14??-1534) |

549 | God Reconciled Us! | Rom 5:10 | DocTrinsograce | 242231
"Contrary to our distorted intuitions, the gospel does not encourage our conquest of heaven through intellectual, mystical, and moral striving. It announces that even while we were enemies, God reconciled us!" --Michael Horton, from his book Christian Faith |

550 | Full Dependence on Providence | Ezek 34:15 | DocTrinsograce | 242230
"Thus situated, many hundred miles from our families in the howling wilderness, I believe few would have equally enjoyed the happiness we experienced. I often observed to my brother, You see now how little nature requires to be satisfied. Felicity, the companion of content, is rather found in our own breasts than in the enjoyment of external things; and I firmly believe it requires but a little philosophy to make a man happy in whatever state he is. This consists in a full resignation to the will of Providence; and a resigned soul finds pleasure in a path strewned with briars and thorns." --Daniel Boone (1734-1820) |

551 | Loving the Return of our Lord | Rev 2:16 | DocTrinsograce | 242221
"He who loves the coming of the Lord is not he who affirms that it is far off, nor is it he who says it is near, but rather he who, whether it be far off or near, awaits it with sincere faith, steadfast hope, and fervent love." --Augustine of Hippo (354-430) |

552 | Sweet Beams of God's Mercy | Ps 68:3 | DocTrinsograce | 242205
"Never was any saint brought into so desperate a distress but that through the mist of his misery sweet beams of God's mercy have shined upon him. Nor ever was there any set in so bright and clear a sunshine of God's favour but that some clouds have let fall showers of sorrows; if not in outward troubles, yet in regard of inward corruptions, yea, and in the thought or fear of some eclipse of that sunshine. Thus in greatest occasion of hearty thanksgiving there is just occasion of humble petition. And where there is most cause of humiliation, there is also much cause of exultation." --William Gouge (1575-1653) |

553 | A Debtor to Mercy Alone | Rom 15:9 | DocTrinsograce | 242204
A debtor to mercy alone, of covenant mercy I sing; Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on, my person and off'ring to bring. The terrors of law and of God with me can have nothing to do; My Savior's obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view. The work which His goodness began, the arm of His strength will complete; His promise is Yea and Amen, and never was forfeited yet. Things future, nor things that are now, nor all things below or above, Can make Him His purpose forgo, or sever my soul from His love. My name from the palms of His hands eternity will not erase; Impressed on His heart it remains, in marks of indelible grace. Yes, I to the end shall endure, as sure as the earnest is giv'n; More happy, but not more secure, the glorified spirits in Heav'n. --Augustus M. Toplady (1740-1778) |

554 | Worship Before the Lord | Ps 86:9 | DocTrinsograce | 242177
"Worship is the submission of all of our nature to God. It is the quickening [making alive] of the conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose -- all this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable." --Archbishop William Temple (1881-1944) |

555 | My God and My Lord | Prov 22:11 | DocTrinsograce | 242174
"Lord, you are my God, and you are my Lord, but I have never seen you... For I cannot seek you unless you teach me how, and I cannot find you unless you show yourself to me. Let me seek you in desiring you; let me desire you in seeking you. Let me find you in loving you; let me love you in finding you." --Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) |

556 | Take Heed | John 13:2 | DocTrinsograce | 242163
Dear Lionheart, To answer your question, "how do we wake people up before it's too late" let me make a few points. First, remember that none of this is taking God by surprise. On the contrary, even back in David's time, He shared with us the purposes and practices of those who are His enemy. Read again Psalm 2. Second, nothing will impede God's eternal purpose; not men, not nations, not demons, not Satan himself. Everything is coming together in just the way He has ordained things to take place. Third, nothing happens that escapes God's attention. He sees not just events, but the plans and hearts of all creatures. Fourth, every molecule in the universe is under His immediate control. Therefore, every one of His promises are absolutely certain. What this all means is that we can take the following steps in perfect confidence. Pray. We know that God will always answer our prayers when they are according to His will (1 John 5:14). Knowing all of the above means that we can pray perfectly according to His will. That is a very powerful thing! Repent. We must understand that the root of our problems are not outside of us, but inside of us. Therefore, we begin by being repentant in the ways our own lives fail to reflect these things. Each time we see failings in other, that is a helpful moment to search out the same or worse failing in ourselves. We must correct the issues in ourselves, our homes, our congregations, etc. Prepare. It is lack of knowledge by which a people perish. As we pray for revival, we must recognize that if God grants it, there will be enormous work to be done. Our pastors will not be able to handle it all. Each of us will need to be teaching, preaching, and counselling others as an enormous hunger for the Word takes root. In order to do that, though, we must prepare through study and effort. Remember. God has provisioned us with a huge resource of lectures and sermons throughout history. We have more at our fingertips than ever before. This has a specific purpose according to Ephesians 4. Leverage those things in order to serve our Lord. Hope. Biblical hope is not just wishful thinking. It could be translated as "confident expectation." Our God has equipped us with all that we need unto godliness. Every single one of our efforts, even the most feeble, are matters of great hope. For our Lord will do what He has said. There is no "too late." In Him, Doc |

557 | From Him Alone | John 17:7 | DocTrinsograce | 242158
"We owe to the Scripture the same reverence which we owe to God, because it has proceeded from Him alone, and has nothing of man mixed with it." --John Calvin (1509-1564) |

558 | Take Heed | John 13:2 | DocTrinsograce | 242141
"Take heed, therefore, brethren, for the enemy hath a special eye upon you. You must have his most subtle insinuations and incessant solicitations and violent assaults. As wise and learned as you are, take heed to yourself, lest he out wit you. The devil is a greater scholar than you, and a nimbler disputant. He can transform himself into an angel of light to deceive. He will get within you and trap up your heels before you are aware... his bait shall be so fit for your temper and disposition that he will be sure to find advantages within you, and make your own principles and inclinations betray you. And whenever he ruineth you, he will make you the instrument of ruin to others. Oh, what a conquest he will think he has got if he can make a minister lazy and unfaithful... He will glory against the church and say, 'These are your holy preachers! See where their preciseness is and whither it brings them.' He will glory against Jesus Christ Himself and say, 'These are Thy champions! I can make Thy chiefest servants abuse Thee! I can make the servants of Thy house unfaithful!'" --Richard Baxter (1615-1691) |

559 | Repent or Perish | Acts 26:20 | DocTrinsograce | 242135
"...be you a professing Christian or no, it is repent or perish. For every one of us, church members or otherwise, it is either turn or burn -- turn from your course of self will and self-pleasing; turn in brokenness of heart to God, seeking His mercy in Christ; turn with full purpose of heart to please and serve HIM: or be tormented day and night, forever and ever, in the Lake of Fire. Which shall it be? Oh, get down on your knees right now and beg God to give you the spirit of true repentance." --A. W. "None, therefore, but those who are born from above, are the subjects of Jesus Christ: for if the heart be not under His dominion, He reigns not at all as a spiritual monarch." --Abraham Booth (1734-1806) |
