John 19 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. "It is finished " Means the 4th cup: The Passover Liturgy in Jesus' time, is based on a four-part structure. The four parts revolved around four cups of wine that are consumed by the participants: 1st part was the Kadush: a prayer said by the celebrant over the 1st cup of wine. Then a dish of green, bitter herbs was passed along with some fruit sauce and that was shared by the participants. 2nd: the Passover Liturgy, taken from the book of Exodus Chapter 12. Then Psalm 113 is sung, known as the little Hillel, then a 2nd cup of wine is shared by all the participants. Now they proceed to the main meal . First grace is spoken over the bread, the unleavened bread and the bitter herbs, the the roasted lamb are served and eaten. The celebrant says a prayer and the 3rd cup known as the cup of blessing, was passed around and shared. At this point you have reached the climax. The culmination of this ancient Passover liturgy would occur with the 4th cup known as the cup of consumation.First they sing psalms 114,115,116,117,118, know as the great Hillel. and they shared the cup. It signalled the communion between God and his people. But during the last supper they do not proceed to drink the 4th cup as in Mark 14:26 .. and when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives". On His way to Golgotha Jesus was offered gall and vinegar,(used at the time, to ease the pain) and he refused, until He said on the Cross " I thirst" and they lifted up a sponge filled with sour wine on a hyssop branch .(The branch prescribed in the Passover law, Ex.12:22 for sprinkiling the lamb's blood. What was finished was the Passover; Not just the Passover, but Jesus fulfilment of an Old Covenant passover. He was the Lamb of God, slain for the families of Israel, and the firstborn son slain in Egypt. He was both victim and priest; priest and king. He was God's firstborn son. He was the lamb slain for the sins of the world. So what was finished? The fulfilment of the Old Covenant Passover. When Jesus had been celebrating the Passover with His disciples, He had temporarily interrupted it. because He was not only celebrating the OT Passover, He was fulfilling it and in Himself, He was transforming it into the new Covenant Passover. He said "tel te lestai" - It is consumated- "It is finished." |
