1 | no tongues biblical basis? | Bible general Archive 3 | DDs | 185756
"Tongues" was, (when I was a new Christian) a big question for me because I was very ignorant to churches and the differences, doctrines and practices between them. The church I was saved in tongues was a very important issue, but then I moved to another part of the state and there was a man on the radio that was very down on tongues and the new church I attended did not practice the various gifts of the Spirit. At that time I did not speak in tongues and I did not know who was right or who was wrong. This issue (and many others) helped me to really intensely study the bible to find out what it stated about it and many other issues. What I feel God led me to understand about the issue of tongues is that it is not an issue that will cause a person to either gain or lose salvation. So if a person believes that tongues is for today and they speak in tongues, or if a person doesn't think that tongues is for today, then both in their own minds believe what is true, peripheral doctrines, but it has nothing to do with gaining or losing salvation. "The Perfect One" did come, Jesus, but He also rose into heaven and is coming again, But tongues came AFTER Jesus came and went, and it was the first sign of the Holy Spirit coming upon the first believers that were told to wait for the Promise of the Father to come, and it was one of the gifts that the church practice that was needing correction at the time on it's use and practice in the body of the church. Tongues is stated in the bible for self edification and building up of ones own faith and for the sign in the church for unbelievers (Jude 1:20, 1 Cor. 14:22). My understanding is that If a person confess Jesus as Lord, and believe that God rose Him from the dead you shall be saved…” So, belief is the issue. Once we believe, there is then the issue of working out our salvation and practicing it with fellow believers. Each church has it's practices and doctrines. But if the church deviates from the basic doctrine of salvation then there is a problem and we have to find one that is in its basis of belief true to the doctrine of salvation and belief in Jesus and who He is and how we are to serve Him. We then come down to the basic, Love one another as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us, and trying not to harm another’s faith but to build them up. If a brother is weak in faith and does not believe certain practices than we can still fellowship with that brother or sister in the Lord in other ways and worship the Lord together, and be examples of character and faith to help them grow in grace and understanding in Love (1 Cor. 13:1). Phil. 3:15 “Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;” If a person does not speak in tongues it is the least of their problems. The need to be rooted and grounded in their faith, and gain a closer relationship with the Lord through prayer and fellowship and service in the church needs to be engrafted in them. And the Love of God and the peace of God will help them to overcome the storms that come in life.
