I have been considering today a verse which has a pronoun (or the implied Greek possibility of a pronoun) that involves the Deity of Christ. It involves our consideration of whether Jesus can "see their faith" and "know their thoughts". It involves whether we "may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." Matthew 9:3, King James, "And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth." [man blasphemeth is in italics]. Matthew 9:3, NASB, "And some of the scribes said to themselves, "This fellow blasphemes." [fellow is in italics]. Matthew 9:3, Amplified, "And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, This man blasphemes [He claims the rights...]" Matthew 9:3, NKJ, "And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, "This Man blasphemes!" This is a question of capitalization of Scriptures. I have my own thoughts, but I would like you all to think about it first. Which do you "go with?" KJ, "This man blasphemeth." NASB, "This ...blasphemes." Amplified, "This man blasphemes [He claims the rights...] or NKJ, "This Man blasphemes." Which is most accurate? Any other suggestions of renderings? From the heart, Ray |

I ask this question as one who believes that Jesus is known in the Scriptures as a Man who came in the likeness of men, but was God among us. Matthew 7:29 reads this way, with the word "one" in italics showing that it is not in the Greek; "for He was teaching them as [one] having authority, and not as their scribes." My question concerns Matthew 8:9, "For I, too, am a man under authority, with soldiers under me..." Was this centurion regarding Jesus as a man, just like him? For he had just told Jesus that he was not worthy to have Him under his roof. Thus, I would say that the centurian viewed Jesus as being under authority or as having authority just as he did, for he said that he has soldiers under him who obey his commands. The centurian knew that Jesus had authority and was more than just a man. My question to people knowledgeable about Greek, is about the acceptability of this, my interpretation: Matthew 8:9, "For I am a man who is also under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it." I need help once again from the Greek scholars for the translation here of a certain Jesus. The Greek does not have the word for "man". Is the word "one" in the Greek? I don't believe so. My view right now is that if I go with the NASB and include "about a certain dead man" then I must capitalize it because I know Him as a Man even as Paul did. If He were just a man then He would not be alive. The resurrection proves that He was who He said He was. So my question is, is this verse concerning One Jesus or a certain Jesus, according to the Greek manuscripts? |

The literary style of the NASB and NKJ often confuses the reader about whether a word is to be regarded as Deity or not. A case in point is Psalm 106:33. Psalm 106:33, NASB, "Because they were rebellious against His Spirit, He spoke rashly with his lips." See Amplified above, "For they provoked [Moses'] spirit, so that he spoke unadvisedly with his lips." Psalm 106:33, NKJ, "Because they rebelled against His Spirit, So that he spoke rashly with his lips." My question, then, is did they rebell against His Spirit or Moses' spirit? Also,I would like a Hebrew scholar tell me why verses 29 and 32 need to insert an "understood" Him in italics. From the heart, Ray |

What do we say to a question that begins with talking about rape and ends with the word suicide? I don't know because that is not my expertise. I only know that the situation can not be ignored and help must be sought from any source dealing with crisis. I think that when one is depressed because of an experience of violence like rape, and feels anger toward God, feeling unloved, helpless, and useless, then one needs to seek professional help outside of the realm of something like this forum. Deuteronomy 6:13, NASB has only in italics because it is not in the Hebrew. The word "only" certainly expresses the idea of the passage in its context. The NKJ margin option for verse 4 of the same chapter reads, "Hear O Israel: [The Lord is our God, the Lord alone, i.e. the only one]" I was comparing Deuteronly 6:13 with Psalm 96:4 today. "For great is the **Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols,[Or, non-existent things]..." Also Psalm 95:3, "For the Lord is a great God, And a great **King above all gods,..." Psalm 97:9, "For Thou art the Lord Most High over all the earth; **Thou art exalted far above all gods." Praise God with me as I ask this question. What verse comes to your mind for comparison with these in regard to the Lord only to be served, worshiped, and praised far above all gods? |

I was comparing John 1:2 and Matthew 9:3. The word that I was looking at was "outos" in Greek. It is translated "This One" or "He" in the NASB and NKJ for John 1:2. It is translated "The same" in the King James referring back to the Word in verse one. In Matthew 9:3 "outos" is translated "This (fellow) blasphemes." in the NASB. "This Man blasphemes." in the NKJ. And "This (man) blasphemeth." in the King James. Does anyone wish to discuss this comparison? |

This would be the interpretation for other verses concerning the "filling of the holy spirit" See Luke 1:15, Luke 1:41, Luke 1:67, Luke 4:1, Acts 2:4, Acts 4:8, Acts 4:31, Acts 9:17, Acts 13:9, even Exodus 28:3, and Ephesians 5:18. |
